Extractions: The Washington Post Young Journalists Development Program and the Newseum Education Center co-sponsored Newspaper Advisers Seminars, a free series of monthly classes for inexperienced high school newspaper advisers. The eight classes covered publication production and journalism education and gave teachers a network of mentors, professional journalists and fellow teachers. High School Facing the retirement of many experienced advisers and other turnover problems, Newseum Education Director Leonard Hall and YJDP Director Dorothy Gilliam combined resources. The Newseum Education Center, which hosted the seminars, mailed registration brochures to every high school in the metropolitan area. Gilliam secured Washington Post professionals to lead sessions, and Carol Lange, coordinator of the seminars, recruited experienced high school journalism educators from Virginia and Maryland to form teaching teams. "Far too often, school publications advisers are left to fend for themselves with little direction, little guidance and, frequently, little experience. The Newspaper Advisers Seminars offered some much-needed support and encouragement to those teachers," Hall said.
