Pretty Cool!
I was a little hesitant in purchasing this item as there were only 2 reviews. I thought it was an interesting concept and thought I'd give it a try. I'm glad I did! This is a neat way of learning the words. It is for audio AND visual learners! I love that I can hear the words in sentences. I think this will really help with the GRE!

This is a great learning tool!
I am a tutor at the local community college, and I use this book often. It really is one of the best tools for learning English and expanding your vocabulary. If you're even thinking about buying this book please do. Learning English can be difficult and frustrating, but this book makes it much easier.

Great way to liven up vocab.
This is a quick but fun way to introduce vocab by using context and picture clues.It is for older elementary and above.

First book that I ever returned to Amazon
I thought that this book would similar to other books that I have purchased which use rhyming and mnemonic techniques to help kids remember new words and build their vocabulary. It doesn't. The cartoons are not memorable, and I was not happy with the purchase. This is the first and only book that I ever returned to Amazon for credit (less the return shipping cost).

No index or table of contents
The cartoons and definitions are great.I also like that each cartoon only takes up half a page.However, the words are harder than I thought they'd be. Also, the words are not in alphabetical order and... brace yourself - there is no index or table of contents!!!You can't quickly find a word you're trying to teach.

Yes, like others say, I think this book is just for ESL learners. In the introduction of this book, it also refers this book is "for anyone from middle school age to adult". I do not think this is for highly educated native English speakers. For the learners, it might be a good vocabulary builders. Actually, I, as an adult ESL learner, like this book.

Very Disappointed
I've been using Schaum Outlines since the early '50s.This one is by far the most confusing that I've ever seen. It should be entitled Advance Chinese Vocabulary. The first lesson uses vocabulary that pre-supposes prior knowledge of Chinese grammar and vocabulary. Overall, the appendices are the only useful items (for a beginning learner). I would return it, but I hope that some far off day I will be able to understand the first sentence on the first page.

This vocabulary book is the greatest idea in the world!I used Pimsleur (Mandarin I, II & III) along with the Oxford Starter Chinese Dictionary as my collective foundation for learning the Chinese language (Mandarin).Both of these tools were GREAT but now that I'm trying to have actual conversations with Chinese people (using VoIP - voice communication over the internet) I've discovered that my vocabulary is a little (a lot?) weak.(I know I'm stating the obvious here, but when it comes to having REAL conversations in ANY language, a well developed and modern vocabulary is a MUST.)I think the major strengths of Schaum's Outlines Chinese Vocabulary can be reduced to just one word: practicality.In this respect, I think it is far superior to just a standard dictionary.Don't get me wrong, its not a replacement for traditional and complete English-Chinese and Chinese(pinyin)-English dictionaries, but the filtering, organization and presentation of its content are PERFECT for rehearsing and quickly developing a large, PRACTICAL and MODERN vocabulary.Great stuff.I also found Schaum's Chinese Grammar to be a useful book as well.

Please consider including both the traditional form and the simplified one as well
Schaum's Outline of Chinese Grammar chose to include both the traditional form and the simplified form in the book. I really think that's a very smart and considerate decision.For people who want to learn the Chinese characters, you need to get familiar with both forms.If you're taught only in simplified form, you're missing a lot -- especially the beauty of the Chinese characters. I strongly recommend that Schaum list both forms like you did with the grammar book. Besides, I guarantee that if you make this small change, the book will sell better. Otherwise, I won't buy it.

Lots of vocabulary, but presentation could be better
This book presents lots of useful vocabulary, often with a helpful sketch.For example the At the Hotel chapter shows a picture of the room and bathroom, with callouts for the Chinese words for the bed, sink, shower, etc. in characters and pinyin.

Sample dialogs are presented to demonstrate the use of the vocabulary.However, the presentation could be improved simply by using the form in the Schaum's Chinese Grammar book, where every sentence if provided in traditional and simplified characters, pinyin, and English.Instead, the Vocabulary book usually gives the English for only one word in the sentence.That's fine if you already have a working knowledge of Chinese, but for beginner's it would be nicer to have a translation of the whole sentence. ... Good, but could be better
This is the only "Book of Lists" I have purchased.I was very pleased with the book as containing Vocabulary arranged in a logical and usable fashion.However, just imagine how great this book (and perhaps the others in the series) would be if it included tests that teachers could use.A simple black-line test for each section would make this the most useful book for Vocabulary ever, and the publisher probably couldn't print enough.Who is going to spend the time to write a test for each of these?I'd purchase the test companion to this book immediately!

A very useful resource for teachers of all levels
This book provided me with so much information, most of which I found useful in planning and teaching a vocabulary improvement class in a community college.It has material that an English or reading teacher can use in elementary, middle or high school.I especially liked the mini-dictionary of roots, prefixes and suffixes, but I found that many of the lists were very helpful.If you teach English or Language Arts, this is a good reference book for both your classroom and for you own information.

This is a comprehensive vocabulary book that covers interesting lists [capitonyms, SAT vocab, oxymorons etc], roots, word origins, subjects [scientific roots, emotions, sports etc], writing, foreign words [exonyms], spelling, abbr, phonics, measurement & geography, methods, affixes & roots, & homophones. I would recommend using this book together with the Writing Teacher's Book of Lists.
