Product Description
This is an interdisciplinary collection of essays which studies the complex relationship between the historical Gulf war of 1990-1991, and those myths, narratives and images commonly drawn on to explain it. A linking theme through the volume is the shadow of Vietnam, how the Gulf war was perhaps the culminating event in what has come to be known as "the Vietnam syndrome". As well as focusing upon the central role of mass media the contributors address issues and events that are not usually treated in the same political and historical context, for example, popular music, comic books, was memorials, anti-war expression, literature, and the effects of war upon language. The essays should be of interest to students of history, politics, war studies, American studies, cultural studies, oriental and Middle East studies, the social sciences, media studies, literature and art history. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I refused to read this dung based on the title alone.
The concept that the Gulf War never occured is preposterous.I was an Attlerry Scout with F/2/2 USMC and can personally vouch for the following facts: A) the conflict happened and was contested. B)There were instagatorsimported from less Arabic countries to punish the local citizens.Myservice in SouthWestAsia was one of the most fulfilling experiences in mylife. ... Read more

Product Description

From The Green Berets to Apocalypse Now and Platoon, the cinematic legacy of the Vietnam War is vast, intense and now, for the first time, is documented as a single genre, in one single volume.

Search & Destroy contains illustrated essays covering over 300 movies, including documentaries. It examines some of the most controversial and psychotic characters in cinematic history, such as Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver, Dennis Hopper in Tracks and Sylvester Stallone in First Blood. From the brutal field of combat, to the flashbacks and demons that followed, Search & Destroy examines the cult classics through to the most recent Vietnam movies, still breaking box-office records today.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent introduction to business in Vietnam
This is a well written and informative guide. It is much better written, and much more insightful, than most books of its kind. It is very useful for any person thinking of doing business in Vietnam...in fact, I wouldcall it "essential".

4-0 out of 5 stars Best book on business in Vietnam

Chapters: Culture of Vietnam. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 216. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Culture of Vietnam, an agricultural civilization based on the cultivation of wet rice, is one of the oldest in East Asia; the ancient Bronze age Dong Son culture is considered to be one of its most important progenitors. Due to the long-term Chinese influence on its civilization, in terms of politics, government and Confucian social and moral ethics, Vietnam is considered to be part of the East Asian Cultural Sphere. Following independence from China in the 10th century AD, Vietnam began a southward expansion that saw the annexation of territories formerly belonging to the Champa civilization (now Central Vietnam) and parts of the Khmer empire (today southern Vietnam), which resulted in minor regional variances in Vietnam's culture due to exposure to these different groups. During French colonial period, Vietnamese culture received merchant influences from the Europeans, including the spread of Catholicism and the adoption of Latin alphabetto this day, Vietnam is the only non-island nation of Indochina which uses the Latin alphabet to write the national language. In the socialist era, the cultural life of Vietnam has been deeply influenced by government-controlled media and the cultural influences of socialist programs. For many decades, foreign cultural influences were shunned and emphasis placed on appreciating and sharing the culture of communist nations such as the Soviet Union, China, Cuba and others. Since the 1990s, Vietnam has seen a greater re-exposure to Asian, European and American culture and media. Some elements generally considered to be characteristic of Vietnamese culture include ancestor veneration, respect for community and family values, handicrafts and manua...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1907335 ... Product Description
A World Transformed looks at the Vietnamese revolution from the perspective of Vietnamese culture itself rather than as a reaction to the Cold War or to the actions of external enemies. Kim N. B. Ninh explores the complex debates within Vietnamese society about the self, culture, and national identity. She shows how a collective sense of the nation's weakness united communists and many intellectuals, who looked to the establishment of a socialist state to offer both the ideology and the organization that would encourage the emergence of a modern, independent, postcolonial Vietnam.
The study covers the period from the Vietnamese communists' initial ascent to power in 1945 to the beginning of the escalation of the American involvement in the country's conflict in 1965, by which time a full-fledged socialist state had been in place in North Vietnam for eleven years. Through a nuanced examination of critical intellectual works, A World Transformed presents a complex view of a period fraught with contradictory possibilities and tensions that continue to resonate in Vietnam today. The extensive use of Vietnamese-language materials, access to archival data never before available, and innovative incorporation of literary and historical sources combine to make this study an invaluable depiction of the Vietnamese revolution.
Kim N. B. Ninh is Assistant Director of the Governance, Law, and Civil Society Programs, The Asia Foundation, San Francisco.
