Product Description

Drawing on both the author's extensive studies of Vedic traditions and her longtime interest in animal rights, Yoga and Vegetarianism shows how the physical and spiritual practice of yoga is historically and structurally tied to a vegetarian lifestyle. When they are used in tandem, she argues, they form a strong framework for physical and spiritual attunement and promote an overall healthy life. Yoga and Vegetarianism emphasizes the importance of understanding of Ahimsa, the practice of non-harming and nonviolence, as the first step in marrying yoga and vegetarianism. All actions, says Gannon, originate as thoughts, so the "perfection of action" that yoga strives for must come from a perfect thought. What is a perfect thought? According to the book, it is a thought free of selfish desire, anger, and hate. This brings us back to Ahimsa and to vegetarianism. Freeing oneself of needless cruelty, harm, and injustice — which includes eating meat — can transform both the individual and the world. This book shows how.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yoga and Vegetarianism: The Path to Greater Health and Happiness
What a jewel! Don't let the funky little cover illustration fool you. This is not just some little pop-culture dodad of a book. Yoga and Vegetarianism is a thoroughly informative, wonderfully intelligent book. The link between Yoga and vegetarianism is a beautiful thing and this lovely book helps make that connection undeniable. It may start out a little low-keyed but soon deepens with ongoing inspiration. It is only briefly sentimental concerning the treatment of animals (this is afterall an emotional topic) but paints an enduring picture of the actuality of non-vegetatian lifestyles. I admire and find sisterhood with the heart behind Ms Gannon's words. I have purchased another copy of Yoga and Vegetarianism to give to an interested, but still-on-the-fence friend and feel certain it will give her the needed informative little push toward vegetarianism.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cookbook for Inner Peace
"Yoga and Vegetarianism" is a fascinating combination of yoga manual, religious/spiritual text, and cookbook. It's a melange. It has something for everyone. Sharon Gannon, who started Jivamukti Yoga in NYC, connects her vegan diet with ahimsa (non-violence) and inner peace. She sees her vegan diet as the path to enlightenment. While she cites the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, her book turns veganism/vegetarianism into a substitute for religion. She proposes an ethical system. Gannon decries the terrible conditions of factory farming and overfishing. She does call for good stewardship of the Earth's resources. However, former vegan Lierre Keith takes issue with vegetarians' sanctimonious naivete in The Vegetarian Myth: Food, Justice, and Sustainability.

The book concludes with some yoga positions, as well as a very short cookbook. She has recipes for raw sauerkraut, "blended" salad, kitchari (an Indian lentil recipe) and oatmeal. Her "detox" diet includes aloe vera juice (one tends to think of aloe vera in soap, not food), seaweed, laxative tea, spirulina, and B12 supplements (since vegans can't obtain B12 naturally through dairy&eggs) When it comes to vegan cuisine, this book is FAR superior Vegan Fusion World Cuisine: Healing Recipes and Timeless Wisdom from our Hearts to Yours

"Yoga and Vegetarianism" is fascinating and thought-provoking. Bon appetit and om shakti!

5-0 out of 5 stars VegNews on Yoga and Vegetarianism
In Yoga and Vegetarianism, yoga activist and innovator Sharon Gannon discusses the direct connection between one's physical practice and embracing a plant-based diet. Beyond just showing up for a weekly session, what we eat impacts the ultimate goal of any yoga practice: enlightenment. Through her translation and interpretation of ancient Vedic scriptures, Gannon shows how extending yogic philosophy to all aspects of life, including diet, makes for a more effective practice. Examining the Yoga Sutras, a clear proclamation for veganism emerges. The first yama, ahimsa, may be the most obvious but equally compelling example, meaning "non-harming." With eloquent discussions on ahimsa and each subsequent Sutra, Gannon makes it impossible for any yogi to ignore animal rights. Sprinkled throughout the powerful text are inspiring quotes and mantras to reflect upon. For beginners, the book concludes with a detoxifying diet plan and a simple seven-pose flow. Wherever you are in your journey, Gannon provides uplifting and compassionate guidance to reach a more peaceful existence.

5-0 out of 5 stars COMPASSIONATE PRACTICE AND PALATE
The cover art, number of pages, and even the main title sort of suggests this is a fluffy and shallow book, which it most definitely is not.Well-written in a kind and compassionate tone, Gannon is never patronizing, nor is she one of those authors who tries to be flippant and hip.The thoughtful presentation of her arguments make perfect sense. The tightly-written book is encouraging and informative, with none of the usual filler and repetition.Highly recommended, especially but not exclusively, for those sitting on the fence of either practice.

2-0 out of 5 stars Yoga & Veganism
I didn't want a book about veganism. I thought this was a book about vegetarianism. I understand the difference and I understand why so many would choose a vegan path but I feel a bit mislead on this. I wish, some where on this page or in the description of the book that it had said it was a book about veganism. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Disorganized and over complicated
I bought this book in hopes of weight training and still be a vegetarian. To find the information you have to browse through the pages back and forth. The recipes are thrown in between other information, they are hard to find and keep them organized. It seems as though the information is just thrown all together randomly without any kind of specific structure or plan. Everything is all over the place combined with a bunch of complicated words and unnecessary information. Also information on certain supplements and plans are "Out on the jury" meaning the author has no idea, proof, or real recommendation of wether it works or not. In my opinion if you don't know if something works for sure... don't write about it in a 'guide'. It's silly. I wouldn't buy this book and I do not recommend it. In fact if I could return it, I would. Right now it's just going to the trash can.

5-0 out of 5 stars Geared toward the serious athlete
If you are looking for a book with ammo to attack the non-vegans in your life, this is not it. As several of the previous reviews have stated, this book provides numerous alternative nutrition plans. Some of the references made in the book measure the effectiveness of vegetarian diets to non-vegetarian diets when addressing some specific nutritional deficiencies associated with intensive training programs. I suggest that this information is presented as comparative and not as encouragement to become omnivorous as has been implied. As a committed vegetarian I took no offense to any of the suspect references.

Read with the absence of political bias this book is extremely informative to the serious athlete. Actual nutrition plans and specific rationale are included from vegetarian athletes with unequivocal credibility. The book is also extremely readable with bios and recipes inserted appropriately to support the nutritional strategies.

My reason for buying this book was to get an edge on my long run times and learn how to recover faster after races and heavy workouts. This book delivered on both accounts.
If you're a weekend mall walker looking for a recipe book, there are several out there that will teach you how to make foo-foo dishes until your eyes bleed. If you are serious about athletic training and understanding vegetarian sports nutrition, you are in the right place.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a vegetarian book
This book uses many examples of athletes who call themselves "semi" vegetarian.Meaning they still consume meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products, consuming any amount of animal flesh is not vegetarianism.

She also references the lacto-vegetarian diet as consuming poultry, eggs, and dairy.Poultry is meat and does not constitute vegetarianism. Lacto means consuming dairy.

She is a strong voice for the supplement industry suggesting large amounts of creatine supplements as well as protein supplements. It is well known that the body cannot store protein and any excess is excreted in the urine along with calcium used in the process of alkalinizing and excreting the protein which can put you at risk for osteoporosis, not a good idea.

Much of the information in the book is highly outdated, focused on supplements and does not offer any sound advice for a true vegetarian who avoids all animal flesh.

The book has a slight undertone of trying to persuade you away from vegetarianismwhich I found odd for a book that claims to be for vegetarians.

I would not recommend this book, I should have read the other reviews before buying it.There are numerous truly vegetarian and vegan olympic or world class athletes, this book gives terrible examples of "semi" vegetarians or what should be termed non-vegetarians.
If you are a true vegetarian, I wouldn't buy this book as it really isn't for vegetarians.

2-0 out of 5 stars deceitful title
I read in one review posted above "and you are (or aspire to be) a vegan, then this book is definitely for you." is this a JOKE? THIS reader obviously did not open this book at all! the term "vegetarian" in used so freely that people that eat a burger a week are considered "semi-vegetarians". What is that supposed to mean? And what about "pesco-vegetarians"? This guide is a joke. If you take veganism or vegetarianism seriously, don't waste your money on this title. However, I give it 2 stars because it has some information on vitamins and other supplements. Yet, I can get the same advice from any other "omni/carnivore" regular nutrition book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for !!!
If you consider yourself to be an endurance athlete (of any type) and you are (or aspire to be) a vegan, then this book is definitely for you. I have seen many other books that say the word "Vegetarian" on the cover, when they really mean ovo-lacto-pesco-vegetarian (eggs, milk, and fish). This book lives up to it's title by featuring lots of recipes, example diets (from professional vegan athletes), and nutrition information for vegans (persons who eat absolutely NO animal products)! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars still the best cookbook ever
For "something borrowed" I wanted to pass onto my daughter my first cookbook, which sadly I had loaned to someone else and never received.Through Amazon I purchased a used edition of exactly the same vintage. It even felt like my old one.The bride cried and so did I.There's a reason this book remains much in demand.I fed my family from it for over a decade, and having memorized so many of the recipes, i thought I could lend the book out.Don't.Buy your own copy, keep it, share it.And one day, pass it on only to a family member.

4-0 out of 5 stars Laurel's Kitchen provides the best and most readable overview of nutrition of any book I've ever read.
Laurel's Kitchen is the best course on basic nutrition I've ever read.(And I've read a bunch, plus studied nutrition in nursing school)The recipes are fine, but they are not the reason I bought two copies again, thirty years after I bought the first one--one for a vegetarian niece and one to refresh my knowledge.

If you are a vegetarian or vegan whose loved ones are concerned that you are not getting enough protein, read Laurel's Kitchen. You'll learn the details of the role of protein in the diet, the levels necessary for health for different age groups, health conditions and activity levels. And you'll learn how to combine food, like rice and beans or vegetables and cheese to provide complete protein.(And you'll learn what that means so well, you'll be able to amaze your well-meaning, concerned loved ones.)

The same is true of their chapters on vitamins, carbohydrates and fats.Plus, it's a good read.As Paddington Bear would say, "It's really quite good value."

5-0 out of 5 stars Changed My Life!
This book literally changed my life.I've never been healthier since I learned to cook for myself from this book.Although I nowuse the recipes found in the book from time to time, it set the standard for how I eat.

5-0 out of 5 stars good and good for you.
i have had this book on my kitchen shelf for 10, years.i particularly love the soup recipes.laurel robertson's soups are old favorites with a new spin.many of the legume soups include potatoes, which, though seeminga strange ingredient at first, give a marvelous, velvety texture to suchold favorites as pea soup and lentil soup.anyone interested in vegetariancooking, or just cooking with vegetables, would do well to have a copy ofthis book in his or her library.yum!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have book for vegetarians
This book is an excellent guide into the world of vegetarianism. It offers delicious recipes, loads of information on good nutrition for the vegan, and is written in a humourous, easy-to-read style. The authorsgive great basic instruction on making meals healthy and balanced, makingit simple to take off from there and get creative in the kitchen.I haveliterally worn out three copies of this book over the years, and highlyrecommend it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must for the philosophical vegetarian
Every vegetarian society should have one of these in theirlibrary. If you thought vegetarianism started with PeterSinger or even Henry Salt, think again. The ancient Greeks have already said it all: the health argument, the ethics argument, the religious argument, they're all there. If you're a vegetarian and you really want to know why, this is where you start, not Animal Liberation or Animal Rights. 3-0 out of 5 stars Slightly too mainstream for this reviewer!
This book, to its credit, is a very positive introduction to vegetarianism for *children* of all ages. It does what a children's nonfiction book should do - dazzles the reader with provocative photographs - and informs in a kind and gentle way. A photograph of a calf in a crate, destined for veal, was a courageous choice, nicely juxtaposed with photographs of cows roaming the streets in India, where they are revered.

My children gravitated to the information regarding the cruel treatment of animals sent to slaughterhouses. They snored a bit through the "Food for Thought - Vegetarian Philosophy" section but snapped to attention at the picture of Dick Gregory on his historic march to Memphis in 1966.

We all agreed that the section entitled "How Do Vegetarians Stay Healthy?" was a bit too glib. My daughter, who has done a *lot* of research on this topic, was chagrined by sentences like, "The easiest way to get calcium is by drinking milk or eating milk products like yogurt or cheese." She observed that it probably is the "easiest" way to get calcium, but pointed out the plight of dairy cattle in the United States and wished that soy products were touted as an strong alternative, rather than as an afterthought. In this section, we also wished that some funky, fast vegetarian or vegan recipes had been included to illustrate the points the author was making.

In sum, it's an earnest, visually pleasing introduction for the neophyte (be it child or parent or both) who wants an overview of the topic. Career vegetarians and vegan parents will find it slightly lacking, but folks who want an overview will be pleasantly surprised. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't do it!
This is a weak insipid uninspired story with art that is flat, amaturish, and unappealing.

As a children's librarian there is nothing that rankles me so much as a book for children that condescends to them. This MIGHT have an appeal for a three year old, after that forget it.

I am also a vegetarian and I find the depiction of food incredibly boring and the story is weak, very very weak.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will appeal to children who like animals .
Not wanting to hurt animals, Victor, a young boy, becomes a vegetarian. To ensure that he is eating a healthy diet, Victor goes to the library to get some books about what types of food he should eat. On his way home Victor stops to read the books and he begins to daydream.
In his dream Victor is invited to a vegetarian picnic by a deer. The deer teaches Victor the difference between carnivores and vegetarians, including the difference in their teeth, jaws, claws and fingernails. At the picnic Victor shares the food of animals who do not eat meat. Rabbits share their vegetables, a giraffe offers some of her green leaves, cows share their soybeans, horses give Victor oats, a gorilla provides bananas, chipmunks offer nuts, an elephant shares peanuts, and a few mice hand Victor some of their seeds.
When Victor wakes up he goes home and tells his parents about his dream and that he has learned what he needs to eat.
Victor's Picnic With the Vegetarian Animals not only points out some of the differences between animals who eat meat and animals who consume plants, but also the types of food that vegetarians consume including: vegetables, beans, grains, fruits, nuts and seeds. Written by Radha Vignola, a nutrition consultant, nutrition educator, diet counselor and vegetarian, this book
will appeal to children who like animals and parents who have vegetarian children. –Reviewed by Glenn Perrett (...)

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun intro to vegan nutrition
I got this book for my 2 year old son, and he finds it very appealing. Who wouldn't want to go on a picnic with rabbits, deer, elephants, and gorillas! 5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful read!
Let me start off by saying I have been veg for 20 years and vegan for 12.I had been looking for info on having a healthy vegan pregnancy but most of what I found had to do with smoking, illegal drug use, etc. which was not helpful in my case.I was over joyed when I found this book. It's an easy read and really informative.I was a bit nervous when thinking about pregnancy and it really eased my nerves. It spells out what you need, how much you need, and where to get it. This book was worth the money and then some!

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Money
The book is okay and somewhat informative but does not offer any true guidance as to what should a vegeterian woman eat during pregnancy. Very dissapointed. Waste of money.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I expected
This entire book is in Question & Answer format, which I find rather annoying. It was written by an obstetrician, and contains far too much general info about pregnancy. I have other books for that; I was expecting only information about nutrition from this book. The actual information and tables related to nutrition are the best part of this book, but comprise far too few pages relative to the whole thing.

3-0 out of 5 stars okay book
I didn't really like it and didn't find it helpful. Maybe if you're new to vegetarianism and scared it might reassure you. Being a pregnant vegetarian is no different than being a pregnant meat eater. Just eat healthy foods and you're good to go.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not really useful.
It really didn't help. I have other pregnancy books that weren't veggie, that gave the same information. ... Read more

From the contrasting properties of plant and animal foods, to their contrasting effects on our health and the environment. From concrete science and studies, to the logical interpretation of nature and religion. From human evolution and anatomy, to the diets of other countries and cultures. From how economic interests have influenced our food choices, to how human empowerment can eclipse them. When the information is assembled the pieces fit like a jigsaw puzzle and the picture is unmistakable.

What diet we choose might be our most critical life choice. We can’t afford to be wrong. We can’t afford not to read Plant Roots. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the vegan "Bible";)
This book is an EXCELLENT reference book for the many reasons that veganism is the way to go whether it is for environmental, ethical, evolutionary, religious, health/medical, or other reasons.Though the author is sometimes sarcastic (and some people don't "get" sarcasm apparently), it is well-researched and sourced.(Though some of the citations don't match the sourced information 100% of the time.)I would recommend this book to anyone, vegan or not, who wants to learn just how important a plant-based diet is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Plant Roots is proof as to the human animal and our diet
Plant Roots will be a great reference book for me in years to come.I love having it by my side to continue to read and go through. Many answers to my questions are all in this book.I have recommended this book to many.George Eisman R.D. is the one that brought it to my attention at the Vegetarian Summerfest 2006.He sure knows what he is talking about.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best treatise on veganism, environmentalism, etc.
This has just become one of my favorite books of all time, dealing with the subjects of vegetarianism, veganism, animal rights, ecology, the environment, world hunger and other areas. Yes, this book deals with all of these subjects. And all in one place for easy reference. This book has obviously been very well-researched and is extensively documented with numerous footnotes at the end of the book. Yet this book provides timeless (and timely) information in a very concise, and at times humorous, way. It definitely is very effective at getting the point across to anyone reading it. I highly recommend this book to everyone, both to my fellow vegans and to all the wannabes out there, as well as to everyone in between. This book provides the solid information and evidence you need in dealing with those people who constantly ask questions and who sometimes want to argue with you about our lifestyle choice. By way of comparison, in giving you the detailed information you need, this book is the M16 of books in a world of flint-lock guns. The book contains irrefutable logic. And at this price, and for being a genuine treasure trove of knowledge, it is a real bargain! Get a copy for yourself and for anyone you care about - because you will not be wanting to lend out your copy to anyone. It's that good!
As for the reviewer below, he (or she) obviously never read the book or even purchased it, to make such asinine accusations against it. This book's message is very clear and comprehensible to anyone who made it out of the first grade! This book proves, beyond ANY reasonable doubt, that we are in fact - by nature - fruit-, nut- and seed-eaters. There is no way around that. Read the book to find out why. :)

2-0 out of 5 stars A confused political diatribe
Bowlby intermingles and confuses a variety of separate issues. The book is advertised as an evaluation of why the human body is designed for eating plant foods. In fact the book wanders far afield and spends too much time discusssing issues that are not relevant. The ethical issues of eating meat, the economical issues associated with eating meat and the political issues associated with eating meat are COMPLETELY UNRELATED to whether our bodies are designed to eat meat. If our bodies are designed to eat meat, then we have to eat meat, a fact that Bowlby cannot comprehend.

5-0 out of 5 stars An unapologetic manifesto advocating sweeping dietary change
In Plant Roots: 101 Reasons Why The Human Diet Is Rooted Exclusively In Plants, Rex Bowlby strongly advocates the consumption of a vegan diet - one consisting of plant-based foods alone, with no meat, milk, or eggs. Articulately defending the vegetarian diet as healthier, more economical, better for the environment, and less likely to spread disease, Plant Roots is stringent and unashamed in its denouncement of the physical and social ills caused by meat, milk, and egg consumption, ranging from the callous disregard of animal (or dairy cow) life, to cultural and social issues of food processing technologies and practices, to the threat of food-borne diseases and increased bacteria resistance to antibiotics caused by eating antibiotic-treated meat. An unapologetic manifesto advocating sweeping dietary change, Plant Roots is a welcome and seminal addition to personal and professional Vegetarian Studies reading lists, as well as community and academic Health & Nutrition Studies library reference collections. ...
