I bought my first commercially produced HTML primer in October 1995 from a choice of two. Now they are overflowing from the shelves (literally in the case of many branches of Waterstones, where overabundance is deemed to add atmosphere). Close inspection of these books however is disappointing. Many HTML primers are little more than fifty pages of HTML tags and tips, padded out with a recycled resume of the Internet, information about search engines, browsers, plus a large list of links to 'sites of interest' and, if a hastily assembled CD is attached, containing page templates, links, and a handful of browsers, the price can hit the fifty pound mark. There have been some excellent and reasonably priced HTML primers which have come along, such as Ian Graham's HTML Sourcebook (covering the ill-fated HTML 3.0), but these have been rare.

This book has six sections, each covering different technologies. Creating Web Pages: This is the first section and it is just what it sounds like. I like that it introduces HTML and discusses ideas for page layout and site design before revealing any HTML tags. I think too many people jump into the technology and figure out site design later. (OK, I admit, I fall into this camp.) Web Graphics and Animation: Although it sounds like this section would be on just graphics, it is far richer than that. Step-by-Step: Download the ImageMagick package . The package available from this location is self-installing. Just double-click to install. Download the freewrl-aqua package . The FreeWRL for Aqua package is a .dmg disk image which can be mounted on to your system by double-clicking on the downloaded file. You must then double-click on the package to start the Mac OS X installer. This installer will request authorization, as it installs into some protected directories. Behold the whirring of the installation process. OS X kindly tells you when it is finished. FreeWRL is now installed and ready for use. FreeWRL is installed into /FreeWRL by default (FreeWRL directory on the Hard Drive). Enter the FreeWRL directory and click on the FreeWRL application icon to start FreeWRL. A start screen will appear allowing you to enter the file (or choose it from a fial dialogue box) that you would like to view. Choose a file and push the start button to view it in FreeWRL.
