Living with limited reading skills can affect an individual's health, safety, well being, self-esteem and quality of life. Adult literacy problems affect every community - even Marion County. Literacy is not just a personal issue. It touches all of us in one way or another. Consider the following: In Marion County 19 percent of the adult population more than 100,000 people read at the lowest level of literacy. Sixteen percent of adults in Indiana read at this level. The National Institute for Literacy estimates that illiteracy costs businesses and taxpayers $225 billion each year in productivity due to employees' lack of basic skills. The literacy levels of children are very closely linked to the educational levels of their parents - especially their mothers.
