Volleyball was invented by Massachusetts natives Dr. James Naismith and William Morgan in 1892, but world-wide influences have helped shape the sport as we know it today. After reaching Japan and Asia through the YMCA network by 1896, a specially designed ball came to be by 1900, and over the next 20 years, rules were set into place. The Philippines created the "set" and "spike" in 1916 and six-a-side play was the standard two years later. By 1920, the rules mandating three hits per side and back-row attacks were instituted. Japan, Russia and the United States each started national volleyball associations during the 1920s. And when U.S. soldiers brought the game overseas during World War II, the sport spread through the rest of Europe like wildfire and France recognized the sport nationally as well. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) made the game a non-Olympic sport in 1949 and the first World Championships for men were held in that same year. The women's first world-level competition came three years later.

Swimming Table Tennis Taekwondo Tennis Triathlon Volleyball Waterpolo Weightlifting Wrestling Home Volleyball About this sport About Volleyball Volleyball events Volleyball is a relatively modern sport, its history mirroring that of the modern Olympics almost precisely. It began at a YMCA in Massachusetts, in the United States in 1895, an invention of William Morgan. Morgan was a friend of James Naismith who had four years earlier invented the sport of basketball, also at a Massachusetts YMCA. It may be an apocryphal tale, but legend has it that Morgan thought basketball was too strenuous a game for middle aged men, so he came up with an alternative, which quickly became known as volleyball. If that raison d'etre is accurate, Morgan would surely roll in his grave if he could see the speed, agility and athleticism required by elite volleyball players today. At first, a basketball was used by Morgan's followers, but it proved too heavy, so a special, lighter ball was manufactured.

Extractions: History Of Volleyball http://www.Volleyball.ORG In 1995, the sport of Volleyball was 100 years old! The sport originated in the United States, and is now just achieving the type of popularity in the U.S. that it has received on a global basis, where it ranks behind only soccer among participation sports. Today there are more than 46 million Americans who play volleyball. There are 800 million players worldwide who play Volleyball at least once a week. In William G. Morgan, an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Mass., decided to blend elements of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball to create a game for his classes of businessmen which would demand less physical contact than basketball. He created the game of Volleyball (at that time called mintonette). Morgan borrowed the net from tennis, and raised it 6 feet 6 inches above the floor, just above the average man's head. During a demonstration game, someone remarked to Morgan that the players seemed to be volleying the ball back and forth over the net, and perhaps "volleyball" would be a more descriptive name for the sport. Extractions: OLYMPIC HISTORY The duel for supremacy of the sport between Russia and Japan was fierce right through to the 1980s. Among men, the US then won the 1984 and 1988 titles. A leading member of that 1988 winning team was Karch Kiraly, who in 1996 became Olympic champion in the inaugural beach volleyball tournament. The most medalled player ever is Inna Ryskal, of the Soviet Union, who won two gold and two silver medals between 1964 and 1976. New elements for the sport in Sydney are the introduction of the libero, a back-row substitute who will wear a different coloured shirt from those of his or her team-mates, and the fact that a point will now be up for the taking in every rally, replacing the traditional system in which only the serving team could earn one. In Sydney, Italy, The Netherlands and Cuba are favourites for the men's title, while Mireya Luis Hernandez, whose skills brought her the Knickname "the spiker with wings", and Magalys Carvajal, of defending team Cuba, are the players to beat among women, with Russia, China and Brazil the threat.

The sport began as a form of family fun and its all-round appeal and low-cost nature meant it soon spread around the world. By the 1930s it was being played in the most bizarre places: Sofia, Riga and Prague, the capital cities of Bulgaria, Latvia and the then Czechoslovakia. The sport was given a boost by the Great Depression. Starved of cash, Americans in their hundreds flocked to the beaches to take part in what was virtually a no-cost pastime and a free source of entertainment. By the 1950s, tournaments were being held in California. Included on the program were beauty contests and other forms of entertainment.
