In het geval van vitiligo wordt aangenomen dat deze immunologische reactie de vernietiging van pigmentcellen veroorzaakt. Deze theorie over het ontstaan van vitiligo is mede gebaseerd op het feit dat andere auto-immuunziekten vaker voorkomen bij patiënten met vitiligo, zoals bepaalde ziekten van de schildklier, de ziekte van Addison (het tekortschieten van de bijnier), alopecia areata (een bepaalde vorm van haaruitval) en suikerziekte.

Melanin is the pigment that determines the colour of skin, hair, and eyes. It is produced in cells called melanocytes. If melanocytes cannot form melanin or if their number decreases, skin colour will become progressively lighter. Other causes of white skin include severe trauma, burns, and deep skin infections.
