Funding in FY 2001 will allow Columbia County to continue the operation of its Domestic Violence Reduction Unit in the Sheriff's Office by funding a deputy investigator, probation officer, and on-scene domestic violence victim specialist. This "on-scene" crisis response team responds immediately to incidents of family violence, provides victim services at the scene and follow-up within 48 hours of the incident, provides investigative assistance to prosecutors, and monitors offenders through probation and attendance at batterer intervention programs. Other goals of the project include expanding this team approach to domestic violence into other law enforcement agencies in Columbia County by providing specialized training and building a stronger collaboration with the Women's Resource Center by including a "consultant" from the shelter as part of the crisis response team to provide outreach to victims in isolated areas.
