After World War II independence was declared, yet the French continued to rule until 1954, when the communist forces under Ho Chi MINH defeated the French, who took control of the north. In 1975 North Vietnamese forces overran the south. The population, age structure, etc. is like the US. The population, which was counted in July of 2001, was seventy-nine million, nine hundred thirty-nine thousand fourteen. The age structure for 0-14 years is 32.13%, 15-64 years 62.44%, and for 65 years and over, the smallest amount, 5.43%. The current environmental issues are soil degradation, water pollution, and ground water contamination. A natural hazard is Typhoons. They only happen occasionally but they do cause extensive flooding. The Typhoon season is usually from May to January. The ethnic groups of Vietnam are Vietnamese, Chinese, Hmong, Thai, Khmer, Cham, and mountain groups. Some of Vietnams major religions are Buddhist, Hoa Hao, Coa Dia, Christianity, indigenous beliefs, and Muslim. Vietnam also has a lot of different languages. Vietnamese is the official language. There are other languages such as English, which is the second language, French, Chinese, and Khmer. There are also mountain area languages such as Mon-Khmer and Malayo- Polynesian. Vietnam imports $15.2 billion worth of machinery and fertilizer. They export $14.3 billion worth of crude oil, marine products, rice, and coffee. The export partners of Vietnam are China, Japan, Germany, Australia, US, France, Singapore, UK, and Taiwan. The import partners are Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, China, Thailand, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, France, US, and Sweden.

Extractions: By Professor Robert K. Brigham, Vassar College The Second Indochina War, 1954-1975, grew out of the long conflict between France and Vietnam. In July 1954, after one hundred years of colonial rule, a defeated France was forced to leave Vietnam. Nationalist forces under the direction of General Vo Nguyen Giap trounced the allied French troops at the remote mountain outpost of Dien Bien Phu in the northwest corner of Vietnam. This decisive battle convinced the French that they could no longer maintain their Indochinese colonies and Paris quickly sued for peace. As the two sides came together in Geneva, Switzerland, international events were already shaping the future of Vietnam's modern revolution. The Geneva Peace Accords, signed by France and Vietnam in the summer of 1954, reflected the strains of the international cold war. Drawn up in the shadow of the Korean War, the Geneva Accords represented the worst of all possible futures for war-torn Vietnam. Because of outside pressures brought to bear by the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China, Vietnam's delegates to the Geneva Conference agreed to the temporary partition of their nation at the seventeenth parallel to allow France a face-saving defeat. The Communist superpowers feared that a provocative peace would anger the United States and its western European allies, and neither Moscow or Peking wanted to risk another confrontation with the West so soon after the Korean War. According to the terms of the Geneva Accords, Vietnam would hold national elections in 1956 to reunify the country. The division at the seventeenth parallel, a temporary separation without cultural precedent, would vanish with the elections. The United States, however, had other ideas. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles did not support the Geneva Accords because he thought they granted too much power to the Communist Party of Vietnam.

The country has discarded its post-war fatigues and the boom in budget travelling, coupled with the softening of government control, have enabled more contemporary and relevant portraits of the country to gain currency in the West. Vietnam offers an opportunity to see a country of traditional charm and rare beauty rapidly opening up to the outside world. Recent outbreaks of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) have been reported in Hong Kong, Singapore, Canada, China (particularly Guangdong province in southern China) and Vietnam. The World Health Organization cautions that the disease is primarily spread through contact with seriously ill patients, often in hospitals. "No 'healing', no apologies, no memorials, nothing can possibly compensate for the damage done and the pain inflicted....The only thing we can possibly do, twenty years too late, is to try and tell the truth." Historian Eric Bergerud (UC Berkeley) wrote the above passage in his second book, "Red Thunder, Tropic Lightning". His first, based on his dissertation, was a scathing indictment of the American war in Vietnam. But as he began to collect oral histories from members of the 25th Infantry Division for "Red Thunder", he began to doubt the accepted "conventional wisdom" regarding US combat troops. The problem, of course, is that there is no one TRUTH about the Indochina Wars. Instead, many different truths coexist and compete. To be sure, there are facts, a myriad of them - the tonnage of bombs dropped by the US during the war, for example. But facts, while useful and necessary, do not lead to understanding without a framework, a matrix, upon which to place them. And there is the rub. In analyzing and making sense of fact, cultural and social reality is constructed. By this process, past events and actions become part of the historical sense of self of a society. In the case of the Indochina Wars, there are many such realities, each with its own truth, each with its own understanding. The sense of self connected with these wars is still very much a contested issue in many of the countries that participated in them.

The Vietnamese appear for the first time at the Bronze age ( á»ng-SÆ¡n civilization ). The Viet tribes who lived scattered south of China and north of Vietnam were undoubtedly wandering hunters kind of people who, because of hunting, liked to move constanly beyond the borders. The Chinese character " nam " (or "nan" in Mandarin), meaning "southern", was used to indicate these Viets of the South as to differentiate from the Viets of the North who remained in China. As for the word Viet (or Yuª in mandarin), it was used by the Zhou dynasty (1050-249 B.C) to indicate the territories located south of China. These Viets of the south, or Southern Viets had, by the end of the second millenium ( two thousand years ) formed kingdoms. á»ng SÆ¡n civilization The Wise Confucius had already talked about these Viets in his Book of Rites ( Kinh Lá» ). Thanks to the prehensile capability of their well detached big toes from the others, these Viets could cross rice fields and climb mountains without ever being tired. For much of that time they have fought for their independence. The main threat has most often been from their giant northern neighbour, China. For a hundred years, until 1954, they were ruled by France. Soon after the Vietnamese drove the French out, they were caught up in another, even fiercer, war. The Vietnam war raged for nearly 20 years, with many people in the South also supporting Ho Chi Minh. The Americans were not able to defeat the thousands of guerilla fighters, and in 1973, they withdrew from Vietnam. Two years later, the country was reunited. The Socialist Republic of Vietnam came into existence on 2 July 1976. In spite of this, the gap between rich and poor is increasing, and Vietnam remains one of the poorest countries in the world.
