Extractions: Stipend: $1500/month The program consists of an individual research project, workshops on research-related topics, sessions on research career development for veterinarians, and a veterinary research symposium. The research project is the most important part of the Program. The goals of the research project are to have students address a significant experimental question, work independently and with other researchers, and produce and publish results. Students will be matched with a preceptor (see list of faculty below) according to research interests. The research interests of most of the participating faculty fall in the fields of neuroscience and infectious diseases. The preceptor will have outlined a focused project for the student to perform in the preceptors laboratory. Students will become completely involved in their assigned laboratory participating in laboratory meetings and social events, attending seminars with other members of their laboratory, and working on their research project at least 40 hours/week. Extractions: Departments Clinical Studies Philadelphia Medical Genetics / Research Established in 1970, the Section of Medical Genetics has taken on a leadership role in veterinary and comparative genetic research involving companion animals. The following major research programs have been developed: Identification and Characterization of Hereditary Diseases in Animals The NIH-supported National Referral Center - Animal Models of Human Genetic Disease forms the core of the hereditary disease studies by the Section and is the only one in the nation. Through the genetics/pediatrics clinics and referrals from other institutions, over 50 hereditary diseases have been identified and characterized in dogs and cats. These clinical to molecular genetic studies contributed to the better understanding of the pathophysiology of these diseases as well as the accurate diagnosis. Based upon this research the Josephine Deubler Genetic Disease Testing Laboratory utilizes a variety of DNA, biochemical, and hematologic tests to identify affected and carrier animals of known recessively inherited diseases in dogs an cats. Other species studied include primates, emus, mice, and food animals. Many of these studies are accomplished through collaborations with other investigators within the School's other departments at the University of Pennsylvania as well as other institutions.
