Love this map!
I'm a US History teacher and I ordered this map for my new classroom. So far, it's been a fantastic addition.Unlike previous maps I've used, this one is large enough for my entire class to see from any point in the room.Plus, the fact that it's laminated means you can do everything from break the country into regions, to circle where key events took place, to drawing out overland routes, with just a handy whiteboard marker.

A good decoration map
An inexpensive map for family room wall and used as a preliminary guide of directions, distance and points of interest. This map does not clearly highlight the major highways and cities that makes it less useful for travel planning.

Great, fun map!
This map is beautiful and so much fun for my kids (ages 7&10) I would have given it 5 stars if the laminate had been a little thicker. This product is worth the money and I would recommend it!

Love the concept
I purchased this for my 2 year to grow into and he loves it.He can locate Virginia and Texas already.My only concern is the laminate.It was very thin and I'm not sure you can call it laminate.Since my son is so young and we would be playing with it on the floor, I wanted something durable.I had to spend another 22 dollars to have it laminated at Office Max which defeated the purpose of an inexpensive buy.The graphics are fun and I think we will get many years of fun and learning from this map. ... An essential tool for the college-search
We are planning on spending time this summer looking at colleges, and this map listing most colleges will be an essential tool as we try to make the most of the time we have. Although we will have to use a more detailed map in conjunction with this map, at least now we have a good idea how close -- or far away -- two colleges in the same state are.

A good reference!!!
My only criticism of this map is that there were a few four-year schools which were missed. (Especially in California)That aside, this is an excellent reference for someone who is applying to colleges, or is looking for a job.I really like the fact that schools are designated as 'public' or 'private', and whether they are religiously affliated, or specialized. Excellent road atlas
I just returned from a 2400 mile trip to nine states. Although I had a GPS in the car, the American Map road atlas was an excellent reference. It lived up to its claim of being very easy to read and the spiral binding made it easier to use than the older style fold-out maps. It was also quite durable - it survived rough handling well. This atlas is suppose to be large print but the print is much too small.It was very disappointing.

Without a doubt the best road atlas you can buy.Spiral binding makes it so much easier to handle without destroying it.

Exceptional detail on State, County and other secondary roads.Larger size and scale provide much improved readability whenyou're on the move (of course I never try to read the map while driving).Excellent detail on city maps and way more notation of landmarks and points of interest than the other brand.

Why waste your money on Rand McNally when this is available?

A good road atlas
THis is a pretty good looking road atlas.The spiral binder makes it less likely to end up like the glued and stapled atlases.The large scale maps are easy to read, even across the cab so you can see what she is telling you.

Large detailed atlas
Most atlases have entire states on only one page.Consequently, many smaller towns are omitted.Most states in this atlas are on two (if not more) pages.Larger print.Easy to use.

Inheritance
Love of maps runs in my family.Maybe there is a map-gene.Or maybe that fact that my dad owned this book is what caused this love of maps to be passed on to me and my sister.

When my dad passed away, this was the one book I wanted as my inheritance.

this book changed my life!
i know, sounds silly, but i picked up an old hardback of armin k. lobeck's masterpiece from a street "vendor" in new york about 15 years ago. paid 25c for it. it has influenced my perception of maps, geology, and the histories of the earth, life, and civilization ever since. it's a simple book, really, but full of concepts and ideas that you just don't get anywhere else here in the 21st century. also, the (hand drawn) illustration is unusually enlightening while exhibiting a charm and elegance that is lost on graphic designers these days.

the only reason anyone would ever go to the trouble of producing a document like this is because they were truly passionate about the ideas they were presenting. it's very sincere, and you'll never look at maps (or the world) the same way again.

Unique
In high school we took a lot of geography, and learned about "tombolos" and "terminal moraines" and such, but damned if the teacher ever gave you an example.

This book has an interesting approach - it shows a map on one side, the text points out interesting or unusually features, and then a second page with diagram and text explains the origin of the feature.

It seems like a simple idea, but it's an approach I've seen in few other places.

Some negatives:
This is a re-print of a fairly old book, so perhaps (according to the new forword) some of the theory is a little old. I feel however, the bulk of the material is still valid, and well worth it. (It's too bad some aspiring professor somewhere does write an up-to-date book using the same approach)

The new forword doesn't add much to the book, and the publisher might better have left it out.

All you have ever wanted to know about georaphy and geology
I haven't read the paperback, but I just came across my copy of the 1956 hard cover and devoured it with renewed interest.Professor Lobeck selects 72 examples of geography and on the facing page illustrates the geological activity that resulted in that geography.New York harbor, Long Island, the Florida peninsula, the Great Lakes, the island arcs of the Pacific and the Caribbean are among the many mapped and explained geologically.A great book for the student of earth science and the traveller interested in maps and why the our earth is so different and interesting. ... Well worth it
Beautiful Map first and foremost! Be very careful unfurling it though - the weight and size of the paper will cause it to crease very easily! The detail is excellent on this map as with any National Geographic map. The colors are very rich as well. The one detractor I might have is that this particular version (antiqued look) is just slightly darker than I would prefer, not by much, but it does make the small city names a little tougher to read since they're not on a white background. Overall though, buy this map if you're into maps - it's the perfect size to enhance any wall! I actually started collecting lapel pins from the places I have traveled to a few years back. My buddies from college and I took a few road trips from Indiana out to California with some amazing stops along the way. It's not really laminated .. just glossy paper!
I purchased this over the less expensive $5 map, because I thought it was laminated. It is not laminated nor very thick.I would say it's similar to Glossy Paper and thickness is similar to a poster.
Still a good map for my kids!

Fantastic Map!
This is a great map.One of the best parts is, is on smaller maps, states like Rhode Island and such kind of get "lost" because they are so small.This is a very large map (so make sure you have the wall space!) so all of the states are very clear and very visible even from a little further away.We love this.

This map is very clear and easy to navigate, yet it is not nearly the reference it could be.The map does not include all of the possible four-year schools in the United States; for example, only 36 of the 50+ four-year colleges in Ohio are listed.There are no other maps of this kind on the market, and it could be a wonderful tool for the high school counselor if it were complete.Hopefully a newer addition will appear, or another publisher will market a better option in the near future. ...
