Product Description

"Preach the Gospel always.  Use words if necessary." - St. Francis of Assisi

It's 1998 and Richard Stearns' heart is breaking as he sits in a mud hut and listens to the story of an orphaned child in Rakai, Uganda.  His journey to this place took more than a long flight from the United States to Africa.  It took answering God's call on his life, a call that hurtled him out of his presidential corner office at Lenox-America's finest tableware company-to this humble corner of Uganda.

This is a story of how a corporate CEO faced his own struggle to obey God whatever the cost, and his passionate call for Christians to change the world by actively living out their faith.  Using his own journey as an example, Stearns explores the hole that exists in our understanding of the Gospel.

Two thousand years ago, twelve people changed the world.  Stearns believes it can happen again.

"Read this compelling story and urgent call for change-Richard Stearns is a contemporary Amos crying 'let justice roll down like waters….'  Justice is a serious gospel-prophetic mandate.  Far too many American Christians for too long a time have left the cause to 'others.'  Read it as an altar call."

--Eugene H. Peterson, translator of The Message, Professor Emeritus of Spiritual Theology, Regent College, Vancouver, BC

"Rich Stearns calls us to exhilarating obedience to God's life-altering, world-changing command to reflect his love to our neighbors at home and globally. The Hole in Our Gospel is imbued with the hope of what is possible when God's people are transformed to live radically in light of his great love."

--Gary Haugen, President & CEO, International Justice Mission

"Richard Stearns is quite simply one of the finest leaders I have ever known.... When he became president of World Vision I had a front row seat to witness the way God used his mind and heart to inspire thousands.... His new book, The Hole In Our Gospel will call you to a higher level of discipleship.... Now is the time...Richard Stearns has the strategy...your move!"

--Bill Hybels, Founding and Senior Pastor, Willow Creek Community Church, South Barrington, IL

"Rich Stearns has given us a book that makes absolutely clear what God hopes for and expects from each of us.... He reminded me of my personal responsibilities and the priority I must give them and also where life's true rewards and fulfillment are to be found."

--Jim Morris, former executive director, United Nations World Food Program

"World Vision plays a strategic role on our globe. As the largest relief organization in the history of the world, they initiate care and respond to crisis. Rich Stearns navigates this mercy mission with great skill. His book urges us to think again about the opportunity to love our neighbor and comfort the afflicted. His message is timely and needed. May God bless him, the mission of World Vision and all who embrace it."

--Max Lucado, author of 3:16-The Numbers of Hope, Minister of Writing and Preaching, Oak Hills Church, San Antonio, TX

"Rich Stearns has penned a passionate and persuasive book aimed at Christians who find themselves absorbed with their own existence, pursuing the American dream of health, wealth and happiness.  Rich traces his own spiritual journey from having it all, to sacrificial living on behalf of those who have nothing.  Not only is Rich eloquent, he's right."

--Kay Warren, Executive Director HIV/AIDS Initiative at Saddleback Church, Lake Forest, CA

"An urgent, powerful summons to live like Jesus. Stearns weaves solid theology, moving stories, and his own journey of faith into a compelling call to live the whole Gospel. Highly recommended!"

--Ronald J. Sider, President, Evangelicals for Social Action, Author of Rich Christians in an Age of Hunger

"With passionate urging and earnestness, Rich Stearns challenges Christians to embrace the whole Gospel of Jesus Christ by embracing the neediest and most vulnerable among us.  After reading the moving stories, the compelling facts and figures, and Stearns' excellent application of scripture and his own experiences at World Vision, you will no doubt be asking yourself: What should I do?"

--Chuck Colson, Founder, Prison Fellowship

"This book is a clarion call for the church to arise and answer the question, "Who is my neighbor?"... If you read this book, you will be inspired, but if you do what this book is asking, you will be forever changed. Rich Stearns' book is like a safari for hurting souls that cannot be written in the safety of an office suite.... If you have been feeling something missing or an aching emptiness inside, read The Hole in our Gospel.  It will show you how to fill that void!"

--T.D. Jakes Sr., The Potter's House of Dallas, Inc.

"Rich Stearns' book is showing us through stories and examples how it is better to see a sermon rather than hear one.  This is an important book for all of us!"

--Tony Hall, US Ambassador and former US Congressman

"This is much more than "just another book" from a Christian leader.  It's a message to Christendom that we all need."

--Dr. Tony Campolo, Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Eastern University, author of Red Letter Christians

"This book represents a powerful personal story; face to face experiences with the poor which changed the author's life, plus, an insightful scriptural commentary.  As happened with Bob Pierce, founder of World Vision; Richard Stearns' heart has been broken with the things that break the heart of God.   Now, Stearns is using his considerable CEO skills to serve the poor and oppressed.  I highly recommend this book."

--John M. Perkins, President, John M. Perkins Foundation for Reconciliation & Development, Inc.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is changing the world.
Wow, where do I start? This book takes a deep, hard look at what it really means to be a follower of Christ in today's world. As you read this book, Rich will take you on a journey through is own life changing experiences and at the same time use scripture to show you how "the least of these" really matter not just to us, but to God.Rich cuts right to the heart of the problems of poverty, hunger, disease, and injustice that are raveging our world.Rich clearly points out the fatal errors of we "Christians" worshiping God in beautiful church buildings with full tummies while our "neighbors" are cold, wet, hungry and homeless.

It is hard to back up a claim that a book can change your life, but that is exactly what this book did for me.I read this book on a flight to Haiti in June 2009 for a short term missions trip.It was the first time I have been outside the united states outside of my time in the Navy.I spent my days traveling through the poorest country in our side of the planet and my evenings reading The Hole In Our Gospel.God used this book and that trip to open my eyes to what I had failed to see up to that point. We live in a global villiage and everyone is our neighbor. There are no excuses for what we have let happen in our world. No you can't fix everything, but you can fix something.

You will definitely need to have a long talk with our God and Savior after you read this one.

Read this book, pray for forgiveness, and then do something!!

Well done Rich. You truley understand what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ.Thank you for sharing your life experience with us and thank you for not pulling any punches with what had to be said to get our attention.

3-0 out of 5 stars No "hole" in the Gospel
A few months ago, Thomas Nelson Publishers sent me a copy of "The Hole in Our Gospel" by World Vision president Richard Stearns to read and review. Before becoming president of World Vision (a wonderful organization that aids the poverty-stricken around the world), he was a corporate climber and successful man.

I was interested to read the book because I recognize the need for believers to actively live out their faith by caring for "the least of these," something that is oft-neglected among evangelical Christians today.

However, I was a little disappointed in the book for a couple of reasons. Although it presented biblical truths (the need to care for orphans, widows and the poor), I felt it missed the fundamental truth. There is no "hole in our gospel." There is no good news, no gospel, but this: That a loving God created us in perfect union with Him. Our first parents - Adam and Eve - disobeyed and destroyed that perfect relationship. We have been disobeying the Lord ever since, but in his justness and mercy, he sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to take the punishment WE deserve by dying on horrible death and placing on his shoulders the iniquities of us all. But, death did not conquer God - he conquered death and because he died in our place and conquered death, we are restored to a right relationship with our loving Father. He has adopted us as His children, with the promise that we will are co-heirs with Christ.

It is THAT reality that motivates believers to do the things Rich Stearns talks about. Because God adopted us - who were different and wicked - and shared Christ's inheritance with us, we are motivated to adopt children. Because God gave abundantly - his Son and his life - we are motivated to give abundantly to those who have nothing. Because we have a relationship with the Great Physician, we are motivated to aid others who are sick and in need of assistance.

The Gospel is our motivation for these deeds and more - not an imperfect theology with a hole in it. To say that there is a hole in the Gospel, and that Christians are "expected" to do these things shows that there is no Gospel understanding at all. If we accept the death and resurrection of Christ on our behalf, that is all we need ever do. We are no more righteous before God if we sell everything and give to the poor than if we never do. However, because of God's great love and mercy to us, wicked sinners, we are motivated to image God to those who have never heard him. Social justice isn't the end-game - introducing people to Christ is. If I devote my life to feeding the poor and giving away my possessions out of guilt or a sense of obligation, but I don't tell them about the Treasure of the Gospel, there hasn't been a hole in my gospel, there has been no gospel at all.

The book is an interesting picture at the spiritual journey of Rich Stearns, and for those who want to better understand the plight of people around the world, it's worth reading. However, don't make the mistake of basing your worth before God by how much social justice you do - working your way toward God by doing good things makes your faith no different than people of any faith other than Biblical Christianity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening and uncomfortable, just what I needed.
The Hole in the Gospel is, or was for me rather, a very uncomfortable book to read. The subject matter cut a little too close to my comfortable middle-class life of ignorance and excess. No longer do I have an excuse to turn my head the other direction and feign ignorance to the plight of millions of needy throughout the world.I am not blind or deaf.Of course I see the news and hear snippets of what is going on in the world: the poverty, the disasters, the wars, the neglect, and the disease. But, 15 second sound bites and highlights in the internet are pretty easy to dismiss, especially when they are sensationalized for the masses and sanitized, at the same time, to allow viewers to remain and guilt to be minimal and transient. The cold, hard facts, however, presented in this book coupled with the truth and the commands spoken by Jesus throughout the Bible say more and cut deeper to any compassionate human than any sensationalized infomercial ever could.Instead of forcing myself to keep my social blinders on I now have to find a way to make sure that I see the world around me through the eyes of Christ and seek out opportunities to share the blessings which God has given to me and my family.
This was not an easy read for me.My wife, who tends to have a much more generous disposition than I do, made it through fairly quickly. There are also some times when the book seems a bit dry. These are, thankfully, not the majority. There are also very few,if any, moments where blatant emotion is used as an argument.Mr. Sterns is open about that potential from the very beginning. If you are looking for a good overview of social justice with specific real world examples from contemporary settings, this is a keeper.I will go back and refresh myself on this topic from time-to-time as I continue in my transformation to have a heart for the things of God and seek to meet the deeper needs of others.

1-0 out of 5 stars Think about it
This is an excellent example of New Age thinking combining with the author's pride to provide a book of applause for World Vision. The organization itself may be wonderful and achieving a degree of alleviation to our poorest of the poor, (and I support it financially), but there is NO HOLE IN THE GOSPEL.Our Lord Jesus Christ has given us the Good News of his SALVATION, not works.Yes, we are to help the poor, obviously, but that is not the point of the Good News we are to share with others.I threw my copy of this book away.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
Everyone needs to read this book, Christians especially. Even if its for purely factual information the statistics are true and very surprising. It is extremely encouraging, challenging, uplifting, and the reason it is the 2010 christian book of the year. ... Read more

Product Description

Raised as a Southern Baptist in Rome, Georgia, Susan M. Shaw earned graduate degrees from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, was ordained a Southern Baptist minister, and prepared herself to lead a life of leadership and service among Southern Baptists. However, dramatic changes in both the makeup and the message of the Southern Baptist Convention during the 1980s and 1990s (a period known among Southern Baptists as "the Controversy") caused Shaw and many other Southern Baptists, especially women, to reconsider their allegiances. In God Speaks to Us, Too: Southern Baptist Women on Church, Home, and Society, Shaw presents her own experiences, as well as those of over 150 other current and former Southern Baptist women, in order to examine the role, identity, and culture of women in the largest Protestant denomination in the country. The Southern Baptist Convention was established in the United States in 1845 after a schism between Northern and Southern brethren over the question of slavery. Shaw sketches the history of the Southern Baptist faith from its formation, through its dramatic expansion following World War II, to the Controversy and its aftermath. The Controversy began as a successful attempt by fundamentalists within the denomination to pack the leadership and membership of the Southern Baptist Convention (the denomination's guiding body) with conservative and fundamentalist believers. Although no official strictures prohibit a Southern Baptist woman from occupying the primary leadership role within her congregation -- or her own family -- rhetoric emanating from the Southern Baptist Convention during the Controversy strongly discouraged such roles for its women, and church leadership remains overwhelmingly male as a result. Despite the vast difference between the denomination's radical beginnings and its current position among the most conservative American denominations, freedom of conscience is still prized. Shaw identifies "soul competency," or the notion of a free soul that is responsible for its own decisions, as the principle by which many Southern Baptist women reconcile their personal attitudes with conservative doctrine. These women are often perceived from without as submissive secondary citizens, but they are actually powerful actors within their families and churches. God Speaks to Us, Too reveals that Southern Baptist women understand themselves as agents of their own lives, even though they locate their faith within the framework of a highly patriarchal institution. Shaw presents these women through their own words, and concludes that they believe strongly in their ability to discern the voice of God for themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book that reveals--sadly--our actual experiences.
This is a great book that sadly reveals our actual experiences. All Southern Baptists need to read this book to enlighten those in power who need to change the status quo. God will hold SBC leadership accountable.Amen and Amen.

4-0 out of 5 stars God Speaks to Us, Too
Susan Shaw has done a great job of presenting the attitudes of women who are/were part of
the Southern Baptist Convention. Her extensive use of direct quotes, her selection
of photographs, and her summary statements create for this particular group of
women a picture of what we have experienced. It is positive, and not a whining, "poor me"
kind of presentation.I'm grateful that it is available.

5-0 out of 5 stars "We've a Story to Tell"
This captivating book offers an insider's look at Southern Baptist women within southern culture. The theme of "soul competency" is thoughtfully explored through the eyes and experiences of many different women with a unifying result. "God Speaks to Us, Too" is both funny and provocative. The notion of being "raised right" is a humorous vein that runs throughout the book. From the "we speak in code" acronyms of WMU, RAs, GAs, BYPU, and others, to the carefully directed activities of coronation ceremonies and sword drills, this book is very funny indeed. And all is presented amidst the backdrop of the denomination's greatest crisis to date--the fundamentalist takeover of the convention in the late 1980s and early 1990s. This power struggle within the hierarchy, and the effect it had on the denomination and institutions of higher learning associated with it, directly influenced the lives of many different women. This is the continuing story of these women, their struggles, and their triumphs. This book will appeal to all women acquainted with the Southern Baptist tradition, and will enlighten those not familiar with this way of life. Well done, Susan Shaw!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Collective Story Well Told
This is a "must read" for every person ever associated with the Southern Baptist Convention.Or for anyone supporting those who grieve the losses that gender discrimination has created for women who have lived the story.

Shaw speaks with authority, laced with immense sensitivity!

While no longer a Southern Baptist, despite two decades working for it's various mission boards, I was honored to be allowed to tell some of my story. As one of the older participants, the book raises many memories and emotions for me.Yet I feel connected to so many of the other women who have struggled painfully with the identity crisis and personal losses created by fearful men who have manipulated the system and scripture in order to preserve power and privilege.

I beg to differ with one of the original descriptions of this book:After hearing far too many stories of collusion with clergy sexual abuse and other forms of oppression in the SBC, I no longer respect the leaders; and long ago, I ceased to be influenced by them.

However, thanks to Susan Shaw, parts of our individual stories, as well as the very important collective story, will live on.It needs to be told so that the next generation--both male AND female--will realize that they have many options, as well as obligations for accountability, whether they choose to stay or to leave this "established church of the South."

The presence of the Catholic Church in the United States reaches back to the founding days of our country through the leadership of Archbishop John Carroll, the first Catholic bishop in the United States. His story like the stories at the start of each chapter in the United States Catholic Catechism for Adults give us a glimpse into the lives of Catholics who lived out their faith throughout our country's history. Each chapter in the Catechism for Adults includes stories, doctrine, reflection, quotations, discussion questions, and prayer to lead the reader to a deepening faith. The Catechism for Adults is an excellent resource for preparation of catechumens in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults and for ongoing catechesis of adults. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great tool for Adult Faith Formation
This is a fantastic re-presentation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. As the director of Adult Faith Formation at our parish we have chosen this book to be the foundation of our program. It is easy to read and study and you do not need a degree in theology to understand it.We are using it in small group studies and are delighted that it has a Study Guide (Study Guide for the U.S. Adult Catholic Catechism by Jem Sullivan; Ph.D.) to help the small group leaders. There is also a journal (Reader's Journal for the United States Catholic Catechism for Adults) to help individuals work through Catechism on their own. This is a great product for anyone who wants to renew their faith or needs to be able to answer those questions that their children bring home from church or religous education.

Note: If you are a catechist I would recommend that you also have access to the complete, offical Catechism of the Catholic Church: Second Edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Teaching Tool
This book, United States Catholic Catechism for Adults, is an excellent teaching tool for all adult catechists. It is clear, easy to read, and easily understood. The participants in my parish Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) program will attest to that.It also refers to the Catechism of the Catholic Church as its source as well as documents of Vatican II.This indicates that this has been thought out and not something just dreamed up the US Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).It makes the job of the catechist easier to prepare and more organized in presentation of the subject matter.Recommend for all who are involved in adult education and especially those who facilitate RCIA sessions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Teaching Tool

Product Description

A religious Â"coming outÂ" story by two young believersÂ--one Catholic and one Jewish, with an introduction by Freakonomics coauthor Stephen J. Dubner.

Scott Korb and Peter Bebergal, two young progressives, share a secret: They believe in God. One is a former wannabe Catholic priest, the other a failed Jewish mystic, and they formed a friendship that's shaped by their common belief. In The Faith Between Us, they engage in a dialogue that ranges widely, from the mundane to the divine. They discuss finding religious meaning in their secular worlds, the moral implications of decisions both personal and political, their different religious cultures, and how their lives have been shaped by the pursuit of an authentic, livable faith. Both a spiritual memoir and an examination of contemporary religion as it's played out in unconventional ways, The Faith Between Us offers an alternative vision of faith in America, one that is equally irreverent and devout, ironic and earnest. For everyone interested in a modern take on keeping faithÂ--and in reclaiming religion from the fundamentalists and literalists who have co-opted it for the right and those on the left who dismiss its redemptive powerÂ--The Faith Between Us will be an engaging and thought-provoking read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Thing of Beauty
Peter and Scott have created a thing of beauty.I am an atheist.I was an atheist before I read this book and I remain an atheist after. But this book is not about religion. It is about love, beauty, faith, parenthood, friendship, bird watching, death, sex, smoky lentils... life.It is beautifully written. It is fascinating.Would that everyone possessed the tender and earnest introspection of these two men- would that everyone were brave enough to admit it.The world would be a better place. Please read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seeking God
This is an extremely moving book because, as a descendent of Augustine's Confessions, it is primarily about the experience of struggling with religious faith, not a catechism about what to believe. It has no designs on us. It aims only to involve us in two men's trying to come to personal terms with the idea of God and the experience of God. These two men begin in different places, pursue faith in different ways, and end up in different places. But as the counterpoint between them makes clear, they share the ultimate concern that is at the core of all religion. To have ultimate concern is to be religious. This book takes place inside the experience that so many of today's God Books remain outside of. It shows us that whatever God is or is not, if He is to be found, that is where He must be found: inside the human experience of seeking Him. It is written in the language of the confessional fiction (and non-fiction) that many of us grew up on in the last two generations of the twentieth century. It feels familiar and authentic. I am grateful for it. ... Read more

By virtue of Lutheranism's spiritual heritage and identity in America as an immigrant church, Lutherans are specially placed to give hopeful leadership about the controversial issue of immigration in the United States today. They Are Us explores the biblical, historical, theological, and cultural foundations for Lutheran participation in a public conversation that has important implications for the future of this nation. Based on professional experience and grounded in Christian faith, the authors make the case for immigration reform and call the church to a mission of evangelical hospitality. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Honest and Biblical
This book presents an honest, factual look at the history of immigration....from Biblical times to present. It reviews in greater detail the history of immigration relevant to Lutherans coming to the US, and the history of US immigration policy since Colonial times. Strong Biblical evidence is given in support of "welcoming the stranger", a command that God has given us since the Exodus from Egypt.

I have used this book as the basis of an adult Sunday School class.....and left the question of "What do WE do, in our local community" open to the class's leadings.

Well worth the price.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Sinister Agenda Masquerading as Christianity
This book tries very hard to make the case that in order to be a good Christian, one MUST invite aggressive, violent, and utterly alien foreigners to live in peaceful, crime-free small towns in midwestern America. This sounds suspiciously like something utterly unlike Christianity to me. It sounds like the precepts of Cultural Marxism put forth by the Frankfurt School. Google "Who Stole Our Culture" to find out more about this subversive school of thought which has been destroying traditional American values since the 1930s. It is not charity for the poor that motivates this agenda, because the poor could be looked after in their own lands without causing the violent, disruptive culture clash now underway in formerly peaceful small towns across the upper midwest. No, the destruction wrought by these aggressive, intolerant, Islamic Africans IS the agenda. It may be clothed once in altruism and again in a cassock, but the effect is undeniable and perfectly predictable to anyone with half an ounce of common sense. We are expected to change our culture for them, we are expected to bow to precepts of their sharia law. What next? Are we supposed to mutilate our daughters' genitals and make them wear burkhas unless we expect them to be raped? This has gone too far already... these authors are traitors to their own people and culture, and anyone who agrees passively with their subversive agenda is just as guilty as they are. "They" are most assuredly NOT "us," and we have our OWN culture and heritage to look after, and should look upon anyone wishing to destroy it as our blood enemies.

1 Timothy 5:8 - "But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever."

Certainly charity does not end with one's own, but to deny one's own their safety, their culture, their identity, and their posterity, and use "Christian charity" as an excuse is no charity at all... it is in fact a knife in the backs of all Germanic American children.

5-0 out of 5 stars A different and optimistic look at immigration, and a must read for Lutherans
Love thy neighbor is a commonly trumpeted virtue of Christianity, and "They Are Us: Lutherans and Immigration" echoes this sentiment. Authors Stephen Bouman & Ralston Deffenbaugh explains this viewpoint in regards to immigration calling for Lutherans to take these lost souls under their wing and help them to the best of their power, stating that charity and generosity is the Christian way of life. "They Are Us" is a different and optimistic look at immigration, and a must read for Lutherans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for teaching
This is a very good resource for teaching in congregations about immigration and our call as Christians to welcome the stranger among us.Although it is written by Lutherans it would be applicable to any Christian denomination. As a Lutheran and a mission developer in an immigrant community I am thankful to have this resource to use as I visit other congregations to teach about the reasons for the presence of and our response to the immigrants living in our midst. ... Product Description
It only takes a look at the evening news for us to realize that there is much wrong with this world of ours. The sins of Greed, Lust, Violence and Corruption are rife in all sections of our society. Christians are becoming at best an irrelevance and at worst a persecuted minority. Walter C Kaiser Jr. suggests the one answer to these pressing problems, revival. Not a foot-stomping, soul-saving series of meetings but an individual believer's refocusing on God as the centre of life. With his usual scholarship and vision Dr Walter C. Kaiser Jr. reveals spiritual principles inherent in the great awakenings of the Bible and shows us how to prepare the way for revival today. Revivals like those led by Moses and by John the Baptist provides us with clear examples of what God can do when His sovereign will is acknowledged and obeyed. Read this book and help prepare the way for revival in your community, your church and most importantly your heart. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Needed Call To Repentance, Renewal, and Revival Based On Biblical Examples
"Revive Us Again" by Walter Kaiser takes a look at 16 revivals in the Bible and makes applications to our own personal lives on how to return to our first love for God.

I heard one speaker distinguish between Spiritual renewal and revival by saying revival involves an entire church, while renewal is more focused on the individual. In the case of this book, it is perfect for spiritual renewal, though it can, if used in a class, might lead to revival.

Kaiser definitely is a preacher. Each chapter is written as if it were a sermon. If I took the study, I'd probably be more analytical, but Kaiser's approach makes it more readable.

I highly recommend reading this not just for the individual, but for church classes to go through this book together.

"The older I grow, the more I appreciate the uniqueness of an individual life. Literally, no two people are alike. Each one has a specific genetic inheritance indelibly stamped upon every cell. Environmental influences from the company one keeps, and experiences that one endures, blend to enrich and educate the person who ultimately emerges from this marvelous experience we call life."

With rare insight, gained through service as both a world-renowned heart surgeon and a Church leader, Elder Russell M. Nelson, a member of the Council of the Twelve Apostles in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, writes about the unique powers and potential of each individual.

"The potential for divine power is within us," he says. "It awaits the grasp of each willing child of God." Some of the attributes each person must develop in order to achieve divine power are:

"The potential for divine power is within us," he says. "It awaits the grasp of each willing child of God." Some of the attributes each person must develop in order to achieve divine power are:

Love of neighbor: "Most who have separated themselves from full fellowship in the Church have done so not because of doctrinal disputations but because of hurt, neglect, or lack of love. Progress toward full participation in the blessings of the gospel needs no new programs, only new vision of love, which can be rendered best by friends and neighbors.

Obedience: "Our choice to serve must be an informed choice based on eternal truths, for we do not obey blindly, but because we can see."

A strong marriage: "It takes a man and a woman to make a man or a woman. Ordinary and imperfect people can build each other through their wholeness together."

Obedience to law: "Freedom to act and mastery of our actions both emanate from law."

"The source of our spiritual power is the Lord," he concludes. "This power differs from electrical power. An electrical appliance consumes power, while the use of God's spiritual power replenishes our power. While electrical power can be used only for measured periods of time, spiritual power can be used for time and eternity."

Three thousand years ago the world was still young. The western continent was a huge wilderness, and the greater part of Europe was inhabited by savage and wandering tribes. Only a few nations at the eastern end of the Mediterranean and in the neighbouring parts of Asia had learned to dwell in cities, to use a written language, to make laws for themselves, and to live in a more orderly fashion. ... Christians often settle into their own theological viewpoints much as they settle into the same pews every Sunday morning. Realizing that no human mind can fully grasp the wholeness of God, Sloat invites Christians to step across the aisle and enrich their knowledge of God from the perspective of another. ... Read more
