Editorial Review Book Description Forty years ago, North Carolina's Elon College was struggling to attract students and remain solvent. Today Elon enrolls students from 46 states and 40 foreign countries. Since 1988, it has erected a new library, student center, football stadium, fitness center, and science facilities on its 500-acre campus. The number of applications has risen 40 percent since 1995, and SAT scores of incoming students have improved by 98 points. Elon has emerged as one of America's most desirable colleges. How did this transformation happen? What can other colleges and universities learn from Elon's remarkable turnaround? Taking a new approach to the study of higher education, George Keller examines the decisions made by Elon's administration, trustees, and faculty to transform a school with a limited endowment into a top regional university. Using Elon as a case study, Keller sheds light on high-stakes competition among America's colleges and universities -- where losers face contraction or closure and winners gain money, talented students, and top faculty. This is my bible for the out-of-class experience. It might have a shortcoming in that the group only used fourteeninstitutions in their study, but they openly admit their procedures andappreciate the fact that their scope could be considered somewhat limited. However, their conclusions and recommendations are such that they need notbe institution specific. They challenge colleges and universities to notonly create a mission, but to strive to meet that mission on acontinuum...for it to permeate the scope of the institution from theadmissions process, through campus life, and on into alumniprogramming. For those truly intrigued with higher education (andespecially its outcomes), this is an easy read. The picture that theypaint for the "involved college" is somewhat utopian, but I arguethat is what makes the book so inspiring. We should all hope to work forand/or attend an institution that can set such high goals not only for itsacademic curriculum, but for the community of learning that itfosters. Anyone involved with the lives of college students can't affordto miss out on this book. ... Read more |

Clear Direction for Home Schooling Parents The sub-title of the book might be misleading. Although a portion of the book talks about getting a child into the "best" universities and colleges, this book will be helpful to homeschoolers concerned about getting their children into any (or not necessarily the best) college. We purchased the book several years ago and have followed its procedure. We had no trouble getting our daughter enrolled in college. The book provides clearcut and specific direction that alleviates the fears many of us home-schooling parents experience as we begin the high school years. It is helpful even if your children are not the frequent "home schooled genius types." Since working up a transcript is best done on a year by year basis, the best time for parents to read this book is probably just before they homeschool their (first) child in the 9th grade. I especially appreciated the authors' description of getting into local colleges through the "side door" approach by home-schooled teens taking a college course or two during the high school years. Mentioned but not detailed in the book, there are colleges that are especially predisposed to homeschooled students. Many evangelical Christian colleges would be included in that number. The book will not only create confidence in parents, it will also provide answers to all those nagging questions that friends or family might ask, as demonstrated by the title, "And What About College."
What a great book!
Cafi Cohen's "And What About College?"
From a grateful Reader I am emailing to thank you for the wonderful book you wrote, And What About College? With the help of your book and The Dummies Book on Financial Aid, my homeschooled daughter has been accepted into the Honor's Program at a small university in Austin, Texas and has been awarded a full scholarship for four years. We couldn't be happier! And I could never have presented her so fully without your advice, your experience, and the wonderfulmodel letters, transcripts, and resumes presented in your book. I learned so much in the process; hundreds of hours went into all this. And we were successful! We live in India and are volunteers in a unique school that was developed in Kerala. We are not missionaries, yet without the generous scholarships we would not have been able to afford college. Not only did I need to get her into the college of her choice, but I needed to present her as a student they couldn't live without. Of course she is a good student, worthy of the awards she has received. However, you gave me the format, the language, and the confidence to present her in the best possible light so that the college could recognize her unique experiences and qualities. We both have attended orientation, classes have started, and my daughter is happy. SEU and the college experience it is offering her has been a wonderful choice. I thank you for your book; you are one of the people who is responsible for my daughter's success. With deepest gratitude, Homeschooling Overseas

Editorial Review Product Description Hey yiz, come to Beantown and have a wicked pissah time! Is this accent music to your ears, or nails on a chalkboard? Well, if you're thinking about Northeastern, you should realize that there is so much more to consider about a school than what they tell you in the brochures or campus tours. The College Prowler guidebook to Northeastern will let you in on all the little things that add up to so much more as you spend your next four years in college! Northeastern is now recognized as one of the elite college options in the Boston area; the school is getting the recognition it deserves for doing what very few other institutions do actively finding jobs for students. And two words can accurately sum up the city of Boston: college town! Yes, Beantown is the ultimate place to be if you're a college student. There are countless ways to spend your time. "Northeastern has the benefit of being an urban university, and thus the local atmosphere is not limited to the campus pub and a greasy pizza pit. We're a stone's throw away from Fenway Park: the Green Monster, proud home of the Boston Red Sox. If you're looking for a good taste of some Boston pride, swing by when the Yankees are coming to town. Not to forget the Celtics or Bruins, who play in the Fleet Center next to the North End (a short T-ride away), which, incidentally, is where Northeastern commencement is also held." "Oh, the joys of being young and in college. NU is full of attractive people, and most of them are just waiting to hook up. The problem is the communication; students seem to need some sort of dating guide, because both girls and guys don't know how to treat each other properly. For every good relationship, there seems to be about ten bad ones." Customer Reviews (1)

Editorial Review Product Description During the writing of College ProwlerÂs guidebooks, we felt it was critical that our content was unbiased and unaffiliated with any college or university. We think itÂs important that our readers get honest information and a realistic impression of the student opinions on any campusÂthatÂs why if any aspect of a particular school is terrible, we (unlike a campus brochure) intend to publish it. While we do keep an eye out for the occasional extremistÂthe cheerleader or the cynicÂwe take pride in letting the students tell it like it is. We strive to create a book thatÂs as representative as possible of each particular campus. Our books cover both the good and the bad, and whether the survey responses point to recurring trends or a variation in opinion, these sentiments are directly and proportionally expressed through our guides. College Prowler guidebooks are in the hands of students throughout the entire process of their creation. Because you canÂt make student-written guides without the students, we have students at each campus who help write, randomly survey their peers, edit, layout, and perform accuracy checks on every book that we publish. From the very beginning, student writers gather the most up-to-date stats, facts, and inside information on their colleges. They fill each section with student quotes and summarize the findings in editorial reviews. In addition, each school receives a collection of letter grades (A through F) that reflect student opinion and help to represent contentment, prominence, or satisfaction for each of our 20 specific categories. Just as in grade school, the higher the mark the more content, more prominent, or more satisfied the students are with the particular category. Once a book is written, additional students serve as editors and check for accuracy even more extensively. Our bounce-back teamÂa group of randomly selected students who have no involvement with the projectÂare asked to read over the material in order to help ensure that the book accurately expresses every aspect of the university and its students. This same process is applied to the 200-plus schools College Prowler currently covers. Each book is the result of endless student contributions, hundreds of pages of research and writing, and countless hours of hard work. All of this has led to the creation of a student information network that stretches across the nation to every school that we cover. ItÂs no easy accomplishment, but itÂs the reason that our guides are such a great resource. When reading our books and looking at our grades, keep in mind that every college is different and that the students who make up each school are not uniformÂas a result, it is important to assess schools on a case-by-case basis. Because itÂs impossible to summarize an entire school with a single number or description, each book provides a dialogue, not a decision, thatÂs made up of 20 different topics and hundreds of student quotes. In the end, we hope that this guide will serve as a valuable tool in your college selection process. Enjoy! Customer Reviews (2)
