Product Description
Effective management of river catchments is a critical issue that involves a cross section of stakeholders at different scales and backgrounds. River catchments are not only sources of water, but also areas for human habitation, recreation, agricultural production and others. These forms of land use are influenced by various land tenure systems. Kiruruma catchments have been degraded by intensive use of land resources and land tenure plays a crucial role. The definition and enforcement of property rights to land, how they are distributed at the household level to influence soil conservation is crucial. Formal and informal property restrictions and the relationships, rights and revenues of stakeholders are interactively affect the conservation and management in the catchments. ... Read more

Product Description
It has been argued that the partnering of public and private sectors improve the delivery of municipal social services. In this study, I analyze the roles and relationships between the public and private actors, the constraints hampering success and suggest mechanisms of bettering the partnership. Qualitative techniques including In depth interviews and Focus Group discussions were used to collect the data. The study reveals that the participation of the private sector has generally improved solid waste management in Makindye Division in medium to high income areas. However, the Public Local Authority is not committed to subsidizing waste collection in non profitable low income areas. Despite not being legally recognized, material scavengers help in the recovery and reuse of materials at the Kiteezi Landfill. However, the absence of effluent gas monitoring and tapping equipment at the landfill is posing a potential environmental hazard. The study recommends administrative overhauls, waste management policy amendments, technical improvements and economic investments to dependence on central government. ... Read more

Product Description
The study analyzes adoption of improved maize varieties and its effects on farm yields and rural poverty using cross sectional data collected from 151 households in central (in Nakasongola district) and Eastern (in Soroti district) regions in Uganda. A binary probit model was fitted to examine the determinants of level of adoption. OLS method was used to estimate the determinants of intensity of adoption, and the effect of adoption on yield. The sample statistics show very high levels of adoption (about 80%) and a low level of adoption intensity. The mean yields from improved maize varieties (2941.5kg/ha per season) is significantly higher than the yields from local varieties (1694. kg/ha per season). Regression results show that extension advisory services are strongly associated with adoption of improved varieties. Intensity of adoption of improved maize varieties increases farm yields. However, maize yields respond inelastically to adoption. We conclude that adoption of improved seed leads to increased yield. Thus more technical assistance in the form of training and extension is justified in the country on efficiency and welfare grounds. ... Read more

Product Description
Mountain people are among the world?s poor and face a number challenges since they inhabit a fragile ecosystem. Mountainous areas are characterized by limited land resources, marginal agricultural conditions, isolation, scanty equipment, and remoteness. However due to good climate and relatively high productivity Uganda?s mountainous areas covering 25% of the land area are heavily populated by peasants who depend directly on the environment for livelihood and survival. This book presents how land use practices of local people who inhabit the Rwenzori massif impact on the mountain ecology. Evidence shows that local people have cleared steeper slopes mainly for agriculture and construction of buildings. Their actions have caused erosion, mass wasting, land fragmentation and introduction of alien plants. However, massive immigration and political instability in the region are also to blame for curtailed conservation efforts. The book argues that since many local resource management groups seem to have arisen spontaneously, important is to hold discussions with them and formulate a joint way forward. Above all traditional society structures could indicate the most effective way to proceed. ... Read more

Product Description
This report focuses on the non-woody components of tropical forests, such as herbaceous plants. It is the result of a project carried out in several forests in Western Uganda and Eastern Zaire from 1994 to 1996. The project was carried out by the Danish Centre for Tropical Biodiversity (The Botanical Museum, Copenhagen) in collaboration with several institutions in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaire). Tropical forests are objects of increasing interest for their importance to the global environment. Forestry studies have so far solely been focused on trees, despite the fact that forest floor plants have the advantage of easy access. The aim of the project was to assess patterns of botanical diversity within and between forests in Western Uganda. The main emphasis was on the ground herbs, especially the ferns. The most significant output at this stage is the documentation of species. Appendices list the diversity of species for each Ugandan site. ... Read more

Description:
Children have generally been afforded little attention in migration research or unsatisfactorily included within family migration. Although they are an important consideration in family decisions to move, children also engage in autonomous, independent migration. Further, researchers now argue for the need to situate migration within political, economic and social conditions to obtain a full understanding of why people migrate. Through the use of children-centred research methods, and in-depth interviews with key informants, this paper considers children's journeys to the street in Uganda. By integrating an analysis of Ugandan street children's spatial origins with the familial and societal contexts of their migration decisions, this research highlights the complexity of their migration. In addition, an exploration of the impact of changing social, spatial and temporal conditions on street children's movements illustrates that their journeys are far more than just single processes. ... Excerpt: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park -In 1932, two blocks of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest were gazetted as Crown Forest Reserves. The northern block was called the Kayonza Crown Forest Reserve, and the Kasatora Crown Forest Reserve was the southern section. These reserves had a combined area of 207 square kilometres. In 1942, the two Crown Forest Reserves were combined and enlarged, and renamed the Impenetrable Central Crown Forest. This new protected area covered an area of 298 square kilometres and was under the joint control of the Ugandan government's game and forest departments. In 1964, the reserve was gazetted as an animal sanctuary in order to provide extra protection to its mountain gorillas and renamed the Impenetrable Central Forest Reserve. In 1966, two other forest reserves became part of the main reserve, increasing its area to almost 321 square kilometres. The park continued to be managed as both a game sanctuary and forest reserve. In 1991, Impenetrable Central Forest Reservealong with Mgahinga Gorilla Reserve and Rwenzori Mountains Reservewas gazetted as a national park and renamed Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It covered an area of 330.8 square kilometres. The national park was declared in part to protect a range of species within it, most notably the mountain gorilla. The reclassification of the park has a large impact on the Batwa pygmy people, who were evicted from the forest and no longer permitted to enter the park or access its resources. Gorilla tracking became a tourist activity in April 1993, and the park became a popular tourist destination. In 1994, a 10 square kilometre area was i...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1754684 ... Product Description

Stephen Bunker challenges the image of peasants as passive victims and argues that coffee growers in the Bugisu District of Uganda, because they own land and may choose which crops to produce, maintain an unusual degree of economic and political independence.

Focusing on peasant struggles for market control over coffee exports in Bugisu from colonial times through the reign and overthrow of Idi Amin, Bunker shows that these freeholding peasants acted collectively and used the state's dependence on coffee export revenues to effectively influence and veto government programs inimical to their interests.

Bunker's work vividly portrays the small victories and great trials of ordinary people struggling to control their own economic destiny while resisting the power of the world economy.

Product Description
Once known as 'The Pearl of Africa', Uganda has, over the last 50 years, suffered the notoriety of rule by dictator Idi Amin, of economic collapse, and of systematic human rights abuses. Yet today, Uganda is widely viewed as an inspirational economic success story, and as a symbol of a more vibrant, successful Africa.
This Country Profile provides a concise account of Uganda's historical and political background, and traces the growth of modern Uganda, where pioneering and imaginative responses to poverty and political pluralism are contrasted with the devastating effects of continuing internal conflicts.
Throughout the book, Ugandan people speak for themselves on such issues as dealing with conflict; the effects of the universal primary education program; and innovative projects to combat HIV and AIDS. ... Read more
