Extractions: At the end of XIX century there was an idea to organize a University in Turkestan, a moth-erland of the great scholars. This idea was writ-ten on the pages of the newspapers and journals such as "Tarjimon", "Oina" etc. This idea was given also in the regulations of the society of jadids "Turon". The freedombloving national enlighteners approved the idea of the organiza-tion of modern university and formed a special council. The council compiled the system of academics, the programmes and faculties of the future university. On May 12, 1918 the great enlightener Munavvarqori Abdurashidhonov (1878-1931) as a rector declared the official openining of the national university in the old city side of Tashkent (in the building of the Uzbek young spectators theatre now). He underlined that the uni-versity would contribute to know better the Motherland and nation, can serve as the means for studying science and technology by nation. The national university had lower, middle and higher education forms and the higher level had five faculties: literature and philosophy, econo- mics and social sciences, agroculture and biol-ogy, medicine and mathematics, industry and technics. A number of prominent statesmen, men of science, as well as outstanding representa-tives of cultural enligntment from Uzbekistan and neighboring countries are closely connected with the university. In 1921 the university had the faculties of medicine, physics and mathematics, social worker, history and philology, engineering, agri-culture and military training. During 1927 - 1931 on the bases of the faculties 120 educa-tional establishments were organized. These are the institutes of medicine, agriculture, national economy, polytechnics, the higher educational establishments.

The strength of her position really comes from one mine, Muruntau, now in its fourth decade and the largest gold mine in the former Soviet Union. The mine, run by the state-owned Navoi Mining and Metals, is still good for 55-60 tonnes (1.8-1.9 million oz) annually, although no official output is declared. Muruntau (meaning 'hilly place') opened in the Kyzyl-Kum desert of Uzbekistan in 1969. The mine is still worked as an open pit now nearly 4km (2.5 miles) long, over 2.5km (1.55 miles) wide, and nearly 400 metres (1,300 feet) deep. The deposit resembles a tree with the branches spread out near the surface and the trunk plunging into the earth (rather like a diamond pipe). The gold originally graded 4g/t (0.12 oz), but has declined to 2.5g/t (0.08 oz). Work at depth in the pit has become increasingly difficult due to poor air circulation which causes summer temperatures to rise to 50 o C (122 o F). The original translation of the word "Kurash" from the Uzbek language is grappling or wrestling. Kurash as a type of martial art or public sport entertainment is mentioned in many ancient oriental historical sources. The legendary 1000 years old Central Asian epos Alpomish describes Kurash as one of the most respected and beloved sports widely practiced by ancient people in Central Asia. Many ancient and Medieval philosophers and historians mention Kurash in their manuscripts and books. The great oriental scientist and philosopher Avetsena writes that practicing Kurash is one the best ways to keep the human body and mind healthy and sound. Still there is no exact information when, where and by whom Kurash was first practiced. But most of the scientists agree on that Kurash is one of the most ancient forms of martial arts people had ever practiced. The new wave of Kurash development started in IX century AD. At that time people of Central Asia enjoyed Kurash as a form of public entertainment and recreation during major social events, like traditional holidays, wedding parties and feasts. Later Kurash emerged from entertainment to become a sporting competition and a form of physical training. The names of the strongest Kurash players became legendary, like the Pahlavan Mahmud who lived in XII century. His grave located in one of the regions of Uzbekistan is still considered by people of Central Asia as a holy pilgrimage place. In XIV century one of the greatest conquerors and statesmen in human civilization Timur used Kurash to train and to improve the physical condition of his soldiers. Its well known that the army of Timur was unbeatable and the strongest in the world at that time.

Extractions: Uzbekistan In 1924, following the establishment of Soviet power, the Soviet Socialist Republic of Uzbekistan was founded from the territories of the Khanates of Bukhara and Khiva and portions of the Fergana Valley that had constituted the Khanate of Kokand. During the Soviet era, Moscow used Uzbekistan for its tremendous cotton-growing and natural resource potential. The inefficient irrigation used to support the former has been the main cause of shrinkage of the Aral Sea to half its former volume, making this one of the world's worst environmental disasters. Uzbekistan declared independence on September 1, 1991. Islam Karimov, former First Secretary of the Communist Party, was elected President in December 1991 with 88% of the vote; however, the election was not viewed as free or fair by foreign observers. Most government leaders are former Soviet officials.

Extractions: Uzbekistan, as one of the postcommunist nation-states emerging in the final decade of the 20th century, presents an interesting case of nation-building at a time when nationhood is an increasingly troubled notion in the world. The increasing force of transnational currents are challenging the ideas of homogeneity and homeland within national borders. It is ironic that the same Communist leadership in Uzbekistan that reluctantly accepted the dissolution of the Soviet Union is now presenting itself as the champion of a restored Uzbek nation. President Islam Karimov, then head of the Soviet government in Uzbekistan, was glaringly silent during the August 1991 coup in Moscow, but quickly changed his posture when it became clear that the end of the Union was inevitable, and that recasting his authority around Uzbek nationalism was to his advantage. President Karimov's spin on himself as a true nationalist seems to be uncritically accepted by most Uzbeks. A key part of Karimov's nation-building project is the rewriting of a national past freed of Russian/Soviet bias.Uzbeks are presented as an ancient civilization on par with the Silk Route trading partners of China, India, Persia, and Greece. Thus, the written texts and the monuments of material culture of the ancient Khorezm and those located in the lands between Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers are said to be produced by the Uzbek genius

Extractions: by Carol Vesecky Our team to Uzbekistan included Albie Miles, a teacher of Biointensive and apiculture based at UC Santa Cruz and myself, Carol Vesecky, director of Biointensive for Russia . The program included a return visit to Chirchik, Uzbekistan, sponsored by Winrock's USAID-funded Farmer-to-Farmer Program. Albie and I spent the week with Irina offering follow-up lectures to her 48 students in the Mini-Farmer Class and Ecoclub at the Combined Studies Center, a senior high school where students receive instruction qualifying them for many different occupations as well as for university entrance. Last summer, Irina took the Ecoclub's "activists" on the road and together they taught workshops in the Nuratau Nature Reserve and the Brichmulla Forestry Farm. This summer, they've already carried out several more such teaching trips, and are committed to reversing desertification in Uzbekistan by promoting Biointensive throughout the country. We were both greatly impressed with the degree to which the students had assimilated Biointensive concepts since last year's workshop. They also clearly understood their potential for solving the desertification problem in Uzbekistan, largely caused by the cotton monoculture and wasteful ditch irrigation. In addition to reviewing the basic topics of Biointensive "how-to's" and their implications for helping protect the environment, Albie described his 1996 research project on nutritional self-sufficiency. For 7 months, he ate only those foods he personally grew in his garden. I led an introductory exercise in garden planning and provided students with crop planning worksheets, calculators, and copies of the first (1993) edition of the Russian translation of
