Editorial Review Product Description Includes a thorough introduction to Ecuador and its people. No-nonsense information on what to expect, preparations, and safety. Twenty-nine detailed trek descriptions, with 50 photos, 33 topographic maps, and 27 elevation profiles. Comprehensive appendices, including lists of trekking companies, emergency contacts, and conservation organizations. Ecuador's special appeal to trekkers, day-trippers, and nature lovers can be summed up in one word: accessibility. The country's unique combination of small size, exceptional geographic and biological diversity, and good transportation infrastructure places an outstanding variety of splendid natural experiences within easy reach of the adventurous visitor. Ecuador boasts more than forty-five protected natural areas, including national parks and private reserves, almost all of which offer trekking and day-hiking possibilities. Many longer treks span several natural regions, from the highlands down toward the Amazon jungle or coastal plain. Ecuador receives many visitors (approximately 500,000 a year), but as yet relatively few people come specifically to trek. Unlike well-known trekking venues such as Nepal, the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru, and Chile's Torres del Paine National Park, trails in Ecuador are never crowded and offer virtually unlimited scope for exploration. Trekking in Ecuador is easily combined with a visit to the country's more traditional destinations: the Galápagos Islands, colorful indigenous markets, Amazon jungle lodges or Pacific coast beaches. very good guidebook, but don't make it your trekking bible..
Nice only for the armchair traveller. The maps are toogeneral and is NOT suitable for actual guidance. The suggested itineraryvaries too greatly for the average trekker. Some suggested trekking daysthat are way too difficult to complete or way too short. Things arechanging quickly in Nepal...and the book does not keep up with thisadequately. I've meet many people on the trail that were alsodissapointed in the misinformation regarding festival dates. The Nepaleseuse a lunar calendar so it is easy to see why the dates can be off fromyear to year. It is unfortunate if someone plans their vacation by this. There are too many misleading information here...and for aforeigner/tourist/traveller/trekker, this can prove disappointing andcostly. Take it from someone who's been there, use this book to entertainyourself, not to trek with.
The greatest trekking guide to Nepal
What the Nepal trekker needs to know: it's all here. Whether one treks solo (notrecommended, really, but certainly possible) or with a trekking company, this informative book provides ALL the information one needs to have asuccessful, delightful, and authentic trekking experience in this ancientand remote kingdom. (Nepal is a Hindu kingdom, with a Hindu king.) As Mr.Armington acknowledges, trekking is neither a walk in the country nor aclimbing experience. Hence, he goes into great detail to prepare theadventurer for what will for most people be one of the major vacationingevents of their lives. Nepal is one of the poorest countries in theworld. A visitor must know how to take care of oneself and also how to havea minimal impact on the environment and social structure. Mr. Armingtoncovers all these matters excellently. The trekking routes are there, too, almost all of them walked--and measured (with a GPS)--by the author toensure complete accuracy. Armchair travelers will enjoy the colorpictures and the descriptions of the land and its people. Travelers andtrekkers will want to devour the information, basicallycover-to-cover. For someone planning a trek to the Nepal Himalaya, thisbook is an absolute essential. It should be used through all stages ofplanning and carried in the rucksack on the trek. It's that good, and thatnecessary, and that complete--a distillation of a adult lifetime ofexperience in the region by a world-reknown travel professional--in a word,a real bargain. Editorial Review Product Description *25 treks (multi-day outings averaging 30-50 miles long) in the Carolinas, Tennessee, and Georgia*Three itineraries with camp options for each trek-you choose the miles-per-day distance you travel*All in color: photography, 3-D "real image" topographic maps, trek summary charts, and elevation profiles for each route Whether it's a 70-mile hike that traverses the crest of the Great Smokies from end to end or a trail in Pisgah National Forest dedicated to a local hiking pioneer, each trek in this guide was chosen for its unique natural features or cultural or historical legacy. Moderate treks stitch together established trails in new ways. More challenging journeys require some cross-country travel and route finding to link one trail with another. Where treks incorporate classic trails as part of the whole, it's often with a twist. For example, the Iron Mountain Trail and a section of the Appalachian Trail are combined to form the unique Shady Valley Loop, eliminating the need for car shuttling between start and finish. For other treks, optional starts, alternate finishes, and recommended side trips add a wealth of possibility. Always, you choose your pace, with itineraries provided for different mileage-per-day goals. You'll find all the information you need at a glance, too:This guide is chock-full of features including a "Trail Summary and Mileage Estimates" chart listing directions and mileage for each landmark and junction and a "Suggested Camps Based on Different Trekking Itineraries" chart for each trek.
