5-0 out of 5 stars Organ Transplantation by David Albert Jones
Transplant medicine transfers living tissue from one part of a body to another to restore or assist its healthy functioning. It is not easily accessed morally: it involves receiving an organ, taking organs from dead bodies or from donors finding new organs and sharing out organs and costs. This booklet outlines the main questions and concerns, explains Catholic teaching and systematically grapples with particularly difficult questions. Excellent book. ... Read more

Product Description
Time Shared: The Miracle of Transplant is a study of how one woman survived a life-or-death struggle until she received a life-saving liver transplant in 2000 to get a second chance at a life she was losing to a silent disease that was undiagnosed for twenty-four years.

Readers will appreciate her layman's approach to the world of transplant. Time Shared: Miracles of Transplant is not a medical book, although it is very informative for those awaiting transplant, their families, those suffering from hepatitis, cirrhosis or end-stage liver disease.

Within the pages of information, you may cry at her very personal and gripping tale of endurance and laugh at her humor on her journey to near death and on the road back to recovery. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Experience, Knowledge, and Delight Shared!
This book is very good.

I am a physician, and my experience with liver transplant comes from my wife's getting a liver transplant eleven years ago. I also learned from this book a thing or two that I was not aware of.

The author presents her own story in a spirited, and interesting manner. She also presents stories of a few others, who were fortunate enough to get a transplant, a few who weren't, and a few who became organ donors. Her main thrust is towards encouraging the organ donation, and her own story is presented, as if in its support. She goes into the minutest details of pre- and post-transplant care, the do's and don'ts, and details of her life, in a gripping way. Useful information is appended as such.

There are trivial negatives, too. There are medical typos: Enflammation instead of Inflammation, Profusion instead of Perfusion, etc. Her effusive style makes her jump from pre to post-transplant events and back, repeat some items 2-3 times, and write confusing run-on sentences. Her quotations regarding the angels, at the beginning of each chapter feel progressively less and less interesting. The author lovingly mentions her two sisters several times, but the sibling rivalry takes the better of her, and apparently makes her do injustice to them. Towards the end, I did find myself eagerly awaiting this interesting, yet redundant book to end. However, it has no real end, as the author points out. "Time Shared" is an apt title.

Excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Information
This woman's book is loaded with information for anyone getting or waiting for a transplant.I wish I had it before.I bought 4 and will give to others I know waiting for a transplant later (you meet a lot of people waiting when you have had one).
Thanks Mrs. McCarty

5-0 out of 5 stars Time Shared: Miracle of Transplant
Great information for anyone needing a transplant EVER.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful read on organ transplant & organ donation
This read really brings to the lay person a very real view of the many stages a patient's mind & body goes through in her illness, it's diagnosis, and the ultimate gift of another chance at life. Only someone who has experienced what Ms. McCarty has can take the rest of us on her journey. In her book she takes us on the complete gamut of emotions she experienced in her quest for her miracle. She tells her story in terms you can easily understand, with wisdon & humor. I highly recommend this book to anyone waiting for transplant, their families who are also so greatly affected by their illness, and also to anyone who might have any doubt that donating their organs can make miracles happen for others. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars essential reading BEFORE entering the hospital
dick and joan stevens have used their experiences through the years to create the most helpful guide for anyone facing health issues. it is a lively and informative read. a great gift for yourself, your family members and all your friends. i loved what i learned from them. thank you dick and joan!

5-0 out of 5 stars What you don't know can hurt you.
As a Medical doctor with 46 years of clinical practice experience, and having recently survived a catastrophic, life-threatening, acutespinal epiduralabscess, I can readily attest to the authors' many harrowing and nearly disastrous examples when being hospitalized for a critical care emergency. The book was very well written. The information was up-beat, organized, and easy to read. I think it is an important book, that needs to be read by everyone. It is up each one of us to be as aware as possible of all our options, and be able to take a pro-active role in our own, or our loved-one's health care decisions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Paula Klug's review of Never Give Up
My husband, and I are long time friends of Dick, and Joan, and basically have lived through all the trials, and tribulations they went through with them. Some people might say, how could this all be true.I can verify that it is true, and actually happened to them. The most important thing I learned from the book is the fact that none of us can go through this alone. We wouldn't have a chance to survive. We all need help, and hopefully can find it.Someone to watch the medications, write down what the Doctor is saying to us, making sure the nurse washes her hands before she touches our loved one. I am so proud of them, I call Dick, the man with 9 lives. Paula Klug

Janet did a marvelous job of giving an intimate over view of Hans' experience with chronic kidney disease and the ultimate gift of love from his brother. We especially liked the way she divided the chapters with the second part of each chapter as an analogy of Christ and his love for us. I purchased three of them-one for us,one for a dear friend who just received a kidney and one for the mutual friend who donated the kidney. Our friend who received the kidney said that reading Perfect Match was a

Product Description
The surgeon who performed the world's first human heart transplant was born into rural poverty. He would grow up to become one of the most famous surgeons the world has ever known. He would be a millionaire many times over and would date famous actresses and models. Yet he didn't gain recognition for inventing a new surgical technique or discovering a cure. When he performed the world's first heart transplant, the operation had already been mapped out by others, every step carefully detailed. But only one surgeon had the courage to risk both failure and professional criticism.

Though the first heart transplant was an enormous risk, more than 100,000 similar surgeries have since been performed world-wide. In the United States, an estimated 2400 patients receive transplanted hearts each year. Eighty-seven percent of them survive for over a year and nearly 75% are alive five years later. They owe those extra years of life to the courage of one surgeon. His name is Christian Barnard, and this is his story. ... Read more

Product Description
In February 2003, an undocumented immigrant teen from Mexico lay dying in a prominent American hospital due to a stunning medical oversight—she had received a heart-lung transplantation of the wrong blood type. In the following weeks, Jesica Santillan's tragedy became a portal into the complexities of American medicine, prompting contentious debate about new patterns and old problems in immigration, the hidden epidemic of medical error, the lines separating transplant "haves" from "have-nots," the right to sue, and the challenges posed by "foreigners" crossing borders for medical care.

This volume draws together experts in history, sociology, medical ethics, communication and immigration studies, transplant surgery, anthropology, and health law to understand the dramatic events, the major players, and the core issues at stake. Contributors view the Santillan story as a morality tale: about the conflicting values underpinning American health care; about the politics of transplant medicine; about how a nation debates deservedness, justice, and second chances; and about the global dilemmas of medical tourism and citizenship.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is what honesty, courage and humor can do ...
This is an engaging, lucid story by an intelligent man with heart and honesty ... not to mention a mischievous twinkle in his eye! While most of us have not suffered the wrenching health challenges the author recounts, this book is a good companion to anyone who is looking for friendship and encouragement on a hard journey.Certainly, care givers and family should give this book to those who want to know they are not alone in the face of cystic fibrosis, cancer, depression, or other hardships.Charlie knows the icy stare of mortality. And like a hockey ruffian, gives it a full-body check and goes out for beers afterward.Way to go, Charlie!

5-0 out of 5 stars INSPIRATIONAL!
I was delightfully surprised at the effect this book had on me.I couldn't seem to put it down!I've had a rough time in the past 3-4 years but the ambition displayed in the book showed how differently one can perceive their troubles and turn them into triumph.I admired this portrayal of strength and tenacity.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful account of a man with great courage.
Overcoming greats odds, the author elequently tells the story of his fight against Cystic Fibrosis that ultimately leads to a double lung transplant.

Mr. Tolchin recounts the trials of growing up with CF and all the procedures, medical problems and hospital stays that heencountered. His tale includes all the medical staff andfriends that support him during his journey and the importancehumanity and human contact has to medical science.

His story is one of triumph, and displays how important family and friends are to overcoming difficult situations.Charlie's not the only hero in this book.He is quick to point out all the people who inspired him along the way. It is here where the books succeeds and inspires. The team effort is unbelievable.

Blow The House Down, is a book that has many lessons a reader can learn. The science and medical break-throughs involved with a double lung transplant are amazing, but the courage of Charles Tolchin, the love of his family and friends and the professional dedication of the medical staff is the real story here. ... Jessica Owen was born with a liver disease that one day would lead to a liver transplant. Authors Tandy and James Owen felt stranded without a road map when their daughter was diagnosed. They had so many questions and no one to turn to for answers. Transplant? What does that mean? What does that entail? What should we do? The Owens relate in My Child Needs a Transplant, Now What? how they and their adolescent daughter, Jessica, bravely pioneered new and terrifying territory that included three transplant surgeries, multiple near-death experiences, and last-minute, heaven-sent miracles; and they felt they were doing it all alone. My Child Needs a Transplant, Now What? was written so others facing the same struggles won't have to feel alone, unprepared, or uneducated. 4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable resource
Tandy and James Owen have written a valuable resource book for parents and relatives of children undergoing organ transplants. The book is not of professional quality, and yet, it is believable. As little Jessica goes through the procedures and symptoms related to her rare liver disorder, her parents describe what to expect regarding assistance available and preparations for the actual liver transplant.

Because children all respond differently to such procedures, the book should not be intended to be a "this is what will happen to your child" resource book. However, there are many good suggestions related to support systems and financial expectations which should help to inform parents in situations such as those faced by the Owen family. In many instances, the authors do not provide vital information (such as what happens to other family members) and at other times, the text appears redundant and overly-detailed.

The book will appeal to a limited group of readers, but that group will be grateful for the time the Owen's took to write their story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Transplants
This is a fabulous book that is so reader friendly. It can help anyone who wants to know more about transplants and how to deal with literally everything that could possible happen.Wise advice is given and insight. Very relatable.

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing book when you need it, and even when you don't
Here is a slim book you should buy, read, and then put high on your shelf. Jessica Owen was born without bile ducts to drain her liver. A very astute pediatrician identified her condition at her six-week checkup. Surgeons immediately performed a life saving Kasai procedure. It was her first operation.

It takes the Owens ten years and a move half way across the country before Jessica receives her liver transplant. End of story? Hardly. Two years later, after enumerable surgeries, months of dialysis, a kidney transplant, two nearly fatal septic shocks, our little heroine--and she is a truly heroic person--decides enough is enough and hides the pills she is supposed to be taking. As her mother writes (and you can hear the sigh), "Remember that kids will get absolutely tired of this whole thing and go on strike."

Although Jessica's story will hold you captive, this book is essentially a guide to organ transplant. The Owens provide check lists on every aspect a patient or parent will encounter. It could prove indispensable for a family member, a friend, anyone faced with such an overwhelming medical problem. Keep it on your shelf ready to loan--and hope you'll never have to.

Once considered experimental and highly risky, human tissue and organ transplantation is today's successful therapy for disorders affecting the heart, liver, kidney, pancreas, eyes, ears, and bone marrow. Combining advanced techniques in surgery, immunology, infectious diseases, cardiology, nephrology, psychiatry, and nursing, organ transplantation is at the forefront of medical science. Despite the advances in transplantation, the literature available to a potential transplant recipient is scant. This book, written by members of the transplant team at the Massachusetts General Hospital in collaboration with a medical journalist, is expressly created for patients and their families, the lay public, and allied health personnel. The authors present a history of human organ transplantation, a review of transplant immunology and anti-rejection drugs, a survey of the national donor organ network, a characterization of the hospital transplant team, and the process of harvesting donor organs. They also discuss the realities of surgery and recovery, potential complications, and hints for transplant recipients and their families on how to cope with the stresses of illness, the wait for a donor organ, and the transplant operation itself. In providing a picture of what to expect from an organ transplant, the authors include case studies of patients' experiences before and following transplantation, and they depict how patients and their families interact with the hospital's medical team. A s a result, this book aims to offer a sympathetic and unsensationalized guide for the more than 20,000 patients each day who await an organ transplant - and for those who are intimately involved with the patient's successful recovery. ... For countries without the book and information about the management of organ recipents as like as my conutry of Korea, this book give me a lot of information. Also, using many episodes which are familar withnon-specialist, it is very easy to understand the contents. I recommend youwith a great hope of long and healthy life with new organs.
