Product Description
Dancing and chanting with their shaven heads and saffron robes, Hare Krishnas presented the most visible face of any of the eastern religions transplanted to the West during the sixties and seventies. Yet few people know much about them.
This comprehensive study includes more than twenty contributions from members, ex-members, and academics who have followed the Hare Krishna movement for years. Since the death of its founder, the movement, also known as the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), has experienced debates over the roles of authority, heresy, and dissent, which have led to the development of several splinter movements. There is a growing women's rights movement and a highly publicized child abuse scandal. Providing a privileged look at the people and issues shaping ISKCON, this volume also offers insight into the complex factors surrounding the emergence of religious traditions, including early Christianity, as well as a glimpse of the original seeds and the germinating stages of a religious tradition putting down roots in foreign soil. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars The awakening of Krishna Consciousness: Is ISKCON really a cult?
This work is a compilation of essays written by several authors. The book is described in three sections; an introduction to the historical development of Krishna Consciousness, the doctrinal controversies, and social issues & reformation of bhakti movement.

Hare Krishna movement grew rapidly in sixties during anti-war movement. The popular hippie counter-culture that was into drugs, alcohol and carefree-sex entered the Krishna movement. Some of them were seeking for directions in life but very few were looking for long term solace. The strict adherence to the rigid practices of Hindu tradition of no meat, no alcohol, no drug, no sex outside marriage, no gambling, and daily religious practices that starts from 4 AM; and public chanting and selling literature at airports was too much for many followers. Many entered this life without giving much thought, but soon got disillusioned, and the old habits of doing drugs kept creeping back in the minds of some followers which may have contributed to some of the problems encountered by the author Nori Muster. Most non-traditional religious groups have undergone persecution because of their beliefs and practices; perhaps they were controversial to conventionally oriented population. There were three major reasons for the conflict of ISKCON with American way of life. Fundamentally the religious beliefs were too different. For one, the traditional Christian belief is that Jesus is the son of God who died for our sins and we must accept him as our savior so that we can spend the rest of existence in eternity in heaven. Those who don't accept Jesus as their savior will remain in hell. ISKCON followers contrasted this thought by worshipping God Krishna. Secondly, the basic notion in Christian life is that a person has only one life to live in this world. The Hindu (and ISKCON) belief is that an individual is born and reborn in a cycle of birth and death according to his karma, and through bhakti and pure devotion to Lord Krishna an individual releases himself from this cycle and reaches salvation. Finally the belief in following a guru or a spiritual master who has attained near perfection in life will lead others in achieving the salvation. These were the main source of irritation and intolerance towards Hare Krishna movement. The appearance in orange robe, shaven head, chanting of Krishna's mantras, women in saris, etc., did not help good community relations either.

It is also not uncommon to for a disillusioned follower such as Nori Muster to do an "expose" that sounds like the ranting of a confused follower who doesn't know what she is looking for in life. Why did it take 10 years for her get out of ashram life in ISKCON if she experienced widespread abuse of power and authority against women? Her comments that Hindu scriptures were anti-woman are ludicrous. The "facts" she has provided about of illegal activities by ISKCON followers is hearsay evidence. Examples include; "her male Sankirtana leader would drop the women off at bars, where they would wait by the exit and offer to do anything a man wanted in exchange for money." "I once saw her grab money out of a traveler's wallet, stash it in her bag,..." "Another woman told me that when she was a new bhaktin they trained her shoplift for the deity department." "She and an older woman would go on shopping sprees where they stole beaded saris, jewelry, and other expensive items to decorate the altars." "The culture of wife beating was widespread in ISKCON,.." No other devotees have come forward to corroborate these stories. How do we know the authenticities of stories she heard from other women in ISKCON is a fact and not fiction? It is understandable that some men and women having come from hippie culture went back to that life, and certainly the ISKCON movement has nothing to do with that. It is unfortunate that some pedophiles also made their way into this movement which brought considerable shame to the ISKCON organization. The spousal abuse and denigration of women have occurred among hippies. I attend temple services at Watseka Avenue (New Dwaraka) when I am in Los Angeles, and I also worship at New Vrindaban, I have not heard from any long term residents of any widespread abuse against women.

There are many other essays which are far more interesting. Steven Rose's "Who is Chaitanya Mahaprabhu" is a short but beautifully written article about the life of Lord Chaitanya. William Deadwyler's article entitled; "Cleaning house and cleaning hearts: reform and renewal in ISKCON," is a very well written article that describes the shortcomings of a fast growing religious movement when no devotee is ready to take over leadership responsibilities at a temple. "Fifteen years later: A critique of gurukula by Gabriel Deadwyler (Yudhisthira Das) is one of the best articles. You get to see through the eyes of a child growing up in the gurukula system and the immense amount of harm it brought to many young ISKCON children. "But somehow demons got involved and abused some of the children, and that is why we gurukula alumni are not full time devotees, and why some of us have even become antagonistic toward ISKCON." This reflects on the state of affairs in some of the schools operated by ISKCON. It was also harmful for young adolescents, some as old as 15 years old not have any communication with opposite sex virtually separating the kids from their peers. These children's were not prepared to interact with the rest of the world. A strict code of authoritarianism compounded with physical and sexual abuse was tragic. The two "revaluation" stories under the title "On leaving ISKCON: personal story" by Steven Gelberg, and "On staying in ISKCON: personal story" by Mukunda Goswami and Anuttama Das Adhikari is a little more scholarly and illuminating.

Anyone who attends the temple services regularly at a Krishna temple comes to a conclusion that ISKCON is not a cult but a devotional (bhakti) movement from Hindu tradition, brought into Western culture immersed in materialism, by a devout Krishna follower.

FROM BONNIE FRIEDMAN, AUTHOR OF WRITING PAST DARK: "This is one of those beautifully written, compulsively readable books that actually feels life-changing.Scene after scene has surprising and sharply memorable characters, and a plot with real-life story twists that are shocking and yet, upon consideration, make perfect sense. By the hauntingly beautiful end, all the scenes added up to a vision of the people of this distant place, and of life itself, that was beyond the joyful adventure of this book. I was left with a vision of life frankly that seemed masterful in scope." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Witty, with heart
I heard Daniel Asa Rose read aloud from this work, and he had the audience laughing so hard that he had to pause repeatedly to give us time to catch our breath. It may sound odd that a memoir on such a subject would be funny. It may seem even odder that such a funny book could be so moving and thought-provoking. Yet Larry's Kidney is all of these things--a truly unique work.

5-0 out of 5 stars I signed up to be an organ donor immediately after reading.
I was enchanted by this narrative and the heroics of everyone involved in this dilemma that was so challenging at so many levels.Of course I do not support many of the activities the Chinese government and so many others in regards to human rights. But that does not take away from the incredible sacrifices Dan made, his family made in supporting this trip, and all the beautiful citizens of China and the ex-pats he encountered who truly risked their lives as well to help him save his cousin's life.I read the book in a couple sitting savoring every word. When I was done I signed up to be an organ donor something I had avoided doing for year.Humanity has many different meanings but Dan showed the side of humanity I hope I would have in that situation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Transplant Tourism, the Comedy
I liked it. There just aren't enough human interest stories available that intersect kidney disease, especially considering the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in the United States, so I welcomed a light-hearted romp through some very serious topics. However, the fact is that many Americans do resort to transplant tourism in an effort to save their own lives, so we do need to hear about these stories rather than stick our head in the sand.

You can certainly question Larry Feldman's (the author's semi-estranged cousin) ethics, but the author's ethics are more clearly stated at the back of the book under the heading of "Nice Clear Morals". To paraphrase, moral #1 is don't do what Larry did, avoid transplant tourism, and moral #2 is sign up as an organ donor (via the driver's license designation - go to Donate Life for more info). I can't argue with either of these morals, although I think it might have been good to add some of the statistics that clearly show that, on average, transplants from transplant tourism result in poorer outcomes versus transplants done in the United States. For instance, in China incidence of tuberculosis and hepatitis are much higher than in the United States and recipients have been documented to contract them from the donor through transplantation.

While I did have several chuckles, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's "side-splittingly funny" is a bit of a stretch. However, Rose does flesh out these colorful characters quite well. Their odd quirkiness kept me reading. The foreignness of China was palpable and made me think of the 80's movie After Hours with Griffin Dunn. Daniel Asa Rose is a good writer.

I was left feeling a bit sad that Larry felt more comfortable going to China than seeking a living donor here in the United States, but his misconception is the same misconception as many others; that they need to ask someone to donate their kidney. What is needed is that people with ESRD get their story out. Often people will step forward on their own to donate if they are aware of others in need. I would have preferred had Dan gotten Larry's story out prior to their trip to China.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book!
I fell in LOVE with Larry's Kidney before even finishing the first page of the book. Love the wit and dry sense of humor of the author--felt like I was right there with Dan and Larry trekking through China on the search for a kidney. This book made me laugh out loud, cry out loud, and I couldn't put it down. Will def be a book I read over and over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Laughter, Love, Life
I absolutely love stories that take me away. It was a pleasure to immerse myself, in not only the distinctly foreign culture of China, but in the close knit culture of these Jewish cousins. For those of us who don't often venture far from home, Larry's Kidney offers a delightful look into other worlds.

I enjoyed the mix of humor coupled with the ethical questions that only an adventure like this can raise. It was refreshing to read a book that took a lighthearted approach to some rather serious issues.

Even if the reader does not agree with the choices made, I believe it is a provocative story that is well worth the read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of Christian Romance - oh so dreamy
I can't say enough positive things about this wonderful Christian Romance Book Series. Oh, my, they have captured my heart and I could not wait to get my hands on the second book, One More Moment in Time. And thank God she had her third book out, Forever in His Heart. These books must be made into a Halmark movie!!!! I am a fan for life. Bless someone and give them these books. Word of advice - don't plan on cleaning or cooking or working until you have finished these books because once you start reading - you won't stop!

5-0 out of 5 stars Endless Love
Elizabeth Ryan has written such a wonderful book on how determination and prayer can get a person through many struggles in life.
The glamour of football and all that it entails for the players and fans just brings the story so much to life.I have read the first two books in the series and am waiting for the next book in the mail from Elizabeth. This one will be signed.
I hope to see more from her in the future.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sadly predictable
I bought four Christian romance novels by four different authors to add to our collection of favorite reading fare. This one was the weakest. The main character is so unbelievably perfect (good looking, rich, great academically, great footballer, great bike rider, great voice, self-sacrificial personality, etc.) that it was hard to have any sympathy for him. The plot was sadly predictable, and there were too many one-dimensional characters - I eventually struggled to keep track of all the names. I would have loved to see fewer, better developed characters, with both good and bad sides. With few exceptions, the good people were perfect and the bad ones had no redeeming features. I could have handled these problems had it not been for the editing. The author was badly let down by the editors. While any author could write words like warmness, humbleness or insaneness, surely the editors should point out that warmth, humility and insanity are common usage? Or that one should rather not have eight sentences in a row that all start with the word "Mark"? Or that, in the case of adjectives, less is more? Or fix a sentence such as "...[his] ability to bring joy to all those he came in contact." Yes, I will remember this story, but sadly not for its spiritual food as much as for the frustration that such a promising author did not receive better support.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWSOME!!!!!! book
This is the second book of Elizabeth Ryan's and it was AWESOME!!!! I can't wait till the third book comes out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't wait for the third!
Elizabeth Anne Ryan's books are a welcome addition to my collection of books by Christian authors!I am an avid reader of Christian fiction and am always looking for another good read.I thoroughly enjoyed Elizabeth's books and am anxiously awaiting the third in this series.Try it....you will not be disappointed! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT SOURCE FOR CANDIDATES AND RECEIPIENTS
This book is an excellent source of information for anyone who is waiting for, already has, or is considering a transplant. It tells everything you want and need to know about this frightening surgery.

My heart transplant took place before (1991) this book was written. I only wish I could have read it in 1990.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still Valuable Information
This book was the only one of its kind for a long time. In fact, I found it years after my father's liver transplant, and found it helpful even "after the fact."

With new information coming out daily, and treatments progressing so rapidly, I continue to keep an eye out for more books on the subject of organ donation and transplantation. I'm interested in the most up-to-date information AND interviews with all types of recipients. I want to know how other people (besides the recipient) feel during and after the process.

Mr. Finn's book is outstanding, and reports from a PATIENT'S point of view. An excellent accompaniment that I suggest for FAMILY members of a transplant recipient is "ORGAN TRANSPLANTS: A Suvival Guide for the Entire Family".

5-0 out of 5 stars A True Sourcebook for Information on Transplants
There is such a scarce amount of information for families of transplant recipients. In fact, this is the only book on the subject at my local library.I found it extremely helpful and informative for many of the technical questions I had about what my father went through and would continue to endure.(He had a liver transplant 7 years ago.)I wish I had found it years ago!Thank you Robert Finn!

5-0 out of 5 stars Bravo
As a clinical social worker that works with patients facing the possibility of organ transplantation, I picked up this book with the hope that it would be something I could recommend to patients. It did not disappoint me!Very well written and comprehensive, it gives a huge amount of information in an easy to understand format. It is also a very interesting read - I had a hard time putting it down!It is a great starting point for people that are just beginning to learn about transplant.I will be strongly recommending it to all patients and families that I meet as part of the pre-transplant evaluation process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Addresses my specific concerns well
My tissue matched up as a kidney donor for a friend who is on dialysis. Ineeded a reference that would answer my questions as I look down the roadto my surgery as a donor. This book, while geared to recipients, addressedmy concerns. There are several general chapters that most readers will wantto read. Then, the book continues with chapters relating to specificconcerns such as heart transplants, kidney transplants, each of the otherorgan transplants, relationships with the surviving family members of adonor, financial considerations, rejection of the organ, etc. The bookclearly explains the system for getting on the "list" and thewait until a donor is found. It also describes the day of surgery as therecipient "gets the call" that an organ has been found. Thesurgery for each of the different types of organ transplants is lucidlyexplained. My main interest is living donors and there is a fine chapter onthat topic. I found myself reading the book, nearly from cover to coverbecause I enjoyed educating myself on all aspects of transplants. The onlychapter I skipped was one that is very specific on the medical regimen forcombating rejection. However, for a potential recipient, this chapter wouldbe of crucial interest (although of little interest to me as a donor). Theinformation is very well organized and anyone with questions abouttransplants will find this book to be an indispensible reference. ... Read more

Transplantation raises issues of patient screening and selection, quality of life for recipients, living donors and their families, cognitive changes associated with transplantation, ethical considerations, and the impact of immunological and pharmacological changes associated with the procedure. This complex of issues affects clinicians from a wide range of disciplines and is the focus of consultation-liaison psychiatry and this book. Pittsburgh, where many of the contributors are based, was and is still a pioneering center for organ transplantation. Dr. Thomas Starzl, who gives an overview of the field, is one of the founding fathers of transplantation surgery. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Still relevant today - 1st heart-lung transplant experience
While this book is from the early days of successful thoracic organ transplant, Mary's beautiful and inspirational sharing of what it was like being the first heart and lung transplant recipient to survive (and she did survive 5 years!) would be eye opening and offer much hope to anyone facing that transplant today.Today that survival expectation is much better, of course, but it was because of her bravery and courage that that is the case now.Even through out of print, I highly recommend this reading, especially when you can get it as a used book for 19 cents (plus s&h).Looking at what was involved back then in the early 80's will make anyone appreciate even more the progress leading up to today's successful procedures that mean adding many years of fulfilling life to patients who thought they had death looking them in the face.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone about to go through the same experience.
Mary passed away several years ago; however, knowing her and her zeal forliving one cannot help believing that her courage to go through theheart/lung transplant will encourage others to reach out and experience theunknown. ... Read more

Product Description

Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders are a group of conditions that straddle the borders between infection and malignancy. They were very rare prior to the mid-1980s but now can be expected to develop in 1-10% of transplant recipients. While some cases are reversible with reduction in immunosuppression, more severe forms are indistinguishable from frank lymphomas.

This book sets out to cover in depth every aspect of these disorders, including both basic science and clinical topics. The epidemiology is reviewed, and careful attention is paid to the role of Epstein-Barr virus in their development. Clinical features are documented and clear guidance is provided on diagnosis, with thorough description of pathologic and imaging findings. Further chapters are devoted to treatment, prognosis, preventive and pre-emptive strategies, and organ-specific considerations.

The state-of-the-art information contained in this book will aid researchers as well as the many different professionals involved in caring for patients with post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders. The comprehensive and detailed coverage will appeal to those who already have some expertise in the field, yet the book will also serve as an invaluable resource for beginners in transplantation.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Just Couldn't Put It Down!
Well, this book was an Amazing experience for me to read about, as I too am the Wife of a 40 year old Man who is waiting for a Heart Transplant. He was diagnosed with Cardiomyopathy November 2008 and had a Pacemaker/Defrillbulator placed in his chest for his 39th Birthday in Decmeber. After 6 months of treatment from the best Doc's @ Mayo Jacksonville, he was told his Heart is not showing improvement & he has now been on The List 8 months. It was Great to hear it from another perspective & also to really see that I am far from alone when it comes to this road we are facing. It also gave me strength, hope & inspiration. It made me realize how truly lucky we are to only have to travel to our "Backyard" 20 miles away to go to Mayo, instead of the 500 miles Lisa had to travel and that our Kid's are 4 & 5, not teenagers.Lisa opened my eyes to many things, mostly that she is an amazing woman & her Husband Miller has had his Transplant 10 years now, so that gives us tremendous hope that you can go on living a normal, productive & very Beautiful Life!Thank You Lisa! This is a must read, if you need a transplant, are a Caregiver or just a Family member or Friend of someone going through this!Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Rebirth is a Must Read!
I am finished with Rebirth!I did not want it to end though...it really is wonderful!

Rebirth is Deborah Ludwig's year long journey of survival. Having been diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia in December 2003, she must put her life and dreams on hold as she focuses on immediate and then longterm survival. She shares every aspect of this journey in a personal, courageous, and heartfelt way, using journaling as her means of coping with her every day struggle.

I know that I will be referring to it probably everyday!Rebirth offers great advice, insight, motivation, and support for anyone dealing with a catastophic disease on every page!

Actually, this book offers all that for everyone, no matter who they are or what they are dealing with.
I absolutely am looking forward to Deborah's next book!Thank you Deborah, for sharing your experiences with everyone. It offers readers hope, comfort, advice, and so much more!

5-0 out of 5 stars Rebirth gives birth to a wonderful writer
A small-town girl who goes to the Big Apple to pursue her acting dreams has to slam on the brakes of her aspirations way too soon when diagnosed with leukemia. Deborah Ludwig's memoir is a well-written, inspiring read. This woman has guts, not only for facing down her disease, but sharing her personal journal of that time period with readers in an unflinching, brutally honest way. It's a book filled with great heart and hope that, immediately upon finishing it, makes you want to share it with those in your community who have the same disease. It also shows how a solid support group of friends and family--and sometimes strangers--plays a big role in a person's survival. Ludwig's calling to be an actress soon becomes secondary to an even greater calling: to help others diagnosed with leukemia maintain a positive spirit necessary to cope with and ultimately beat the disease.

4-0 out of 5 stars An insider's story of surviving cancer treatment
First, a confession: I know this author slightly - she directed me in a play several years ago.
Deb Ludwig shares her journal for a year, starting with her leukemia diagnosis, through chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. This means we get her feelings day-to-day, not as she looks back on the experience from some later time. We see emotional highs and lows, and her discovery of a network of people who step up to support her when she needs it.
I ordered a second copy for the family of one of my cousins, who is currently undergoing treatment for a different kind of cancer. I thought it would be helpful to them to see what another person felt at various stages of treatment - probably many of the same things my cousin feels and thinks, but might be reluctant to talk about.

5-0 out of 5 stars What an Inspiration!
Deborah Ludwig's "Rebirth" is phenomenal! Inspirational and deeply personal, the author effortlessly shares her innermost thoughts about her battle with leukemia, in such a way that you find yourself cheering her on from one journal entry to the next. You're pulling for her to respond favorably to the myriad medications, hoping the results of her latest blood work allow her to continue moving forward in treatment, and deeply moved when she or they do not. At the same time, she weaves in medical terminology that anyone with such a diagnosis must learn - allowing the reader to gain insight into the foreign, tumultuous world of chemotherapy and bone marrow transplant.

From the very first entry, you're engaged with the author's drive and desire to win over Leukemia - realizing the self-exploration and awareness that must occur along the way. As she chronicles her yearlong battle, the profundity of what she faces sets in. In addition to juggling her finances, her plans for a career, and getting on with everyday life - she's fighting for her life, one day at a time. What an amazing journey - enlightening, insightful, and moving - a must-read for anyone struggling with a life-threatening illness or for those trying to support a loved one through the ordeal.
