The purpose of the research in this volume is to design a machine-tractable dictionary from the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (LDOCE). A machine-tractable dictionary is intended to be a basic facility for a whole spectrum of natural language processing tasks. The research adopts a compositional-reduction approach to obtain a set of empirically derived definitional primitives and use them to construct formalized sense entries in a nested predicate form where the predicates are a set of definitional primitives called "seed senses". Over 40 years of continuous effort at natural language processing have led the research community in this area to the realization that very large machine tractable dictionaries are essential to success in any further computational attempts at natural language. The emergence of machine-readable data, such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, and documents of a general, unrestricted nature as by-products of modern typesetting technology, facilitates the derivation of very large lexicons and knowledge bases at low costs.An open research question in computation lexicography in particular and natural language processing in general involves the machine tractability of these lexicons. Marling Menu-Masters are the BEST
My family has been using Marling "Menu-Busters", as we call them, since the mid-1980s, and I was very happy to see that they are still available today. We have used them in the Italian, French, and Spanish versions, and they are all great. Easy to use and small enough to put in a shirt pocket, the soft plastic cover is rugged and durable. Since European menus are almost always arranged by courses, the Marling Menu-Master is arranged the same way, and we hardly ever found a food item that doesn't show up in this guide. If you are only purchasing one such book, you should consider this first.

Assolutamente perfetto!
The Martling Menu Master is a great guide for everyone who travels to Italy and likes to eat.The guide helps you to decipher the menu so you can rest assured you are ordering what you wanted.Not sure what ingredients make up a dish, check the guide.We've used the French guide on prior vacations and now this one will get us through Italy.

Don't waste your money
We bought this prior to our trip to Italy. The idea was that it would / could / should help us to order at restaurants while there. Yeah... that was wishful thinking I guess. Most of the things that we looked for weren't there. Most of the things that were in the book weren't on the menu or were named / presented quite differently in context. It didn't help us at all and we quickly abandoned it. Save your money. ... Read more

Not really useful
Just returned from a 10 day trip wandering around a variety of cities in Germany mostly in the southern part.I had taken the Marling Menu Master along with me because of how valuable it had been on a previous trip in the mid 1980's.Well on this trip it was basically useless.Here's why:#1 - the menu-master was originally written in 1971 and has not been updated since.Of course German cuisine has moved on since 1971.#2 - the menu master was basically useless for the regional cuisine I encountered in the southern region of Germany.Finally English is much more prevalent than what I had experienced on my last trip - of long ago.So I would have to say you'd be better off with a decent German dictionary than the menu master.

THE VERY LATE Menu Master
The Markling menue Master is great.Unfortunately the shipper was NOT great.The book didn't arrive for over a month (well after we return ed from out trip).I will never order from the again.

a foodie essential
A significant part of the reason I love to travel is discovering regional specialties.Even when German restaurants offer an English menu (particularly in tourist areas), the translations are simply awful. This tiny book makes it possible to figure out what's being offered on a restaurant menu, and to choose the best options. It's organized the same waya German menu is, which makes finding items easy and fast. (I also like The Hungry Traveler Germany, as you'll see from my review of that book.)

Don't leave home without it
Small enough to fit in a pocket and carry with you everywhere, this guide to translating the menus in Germany should be with you in every restaurant.

I read it on the plane and was able to know what I was ordering at the first meal. My co-workers thought that I spoke German because I knew exactly what I wanted and exactly what I was getting.

No Guessing
I used the Menu Master (I call it a Menu Finder) for eight months in Germany.I also briefly used the French edition in France, and the Italian edition in Italy.My general comments are the same for all three.I look forward to using the Spanish edition someday.

A small, hip pocket, book bound in vinyl it can see rough service virtually anywhere.It is easy to use from Suppe zu den Nüsse (soup to nuts).And is actually organized from the appetizer to dessert.It is thorough in identifying the different preparations and nuances in service.Once you read the instructions and do the menu exercise included at the back, you will have little or no trouble ordering your favorites.Believe me, it is good to know the difference between Schinken (Ham) and Schnecken (Snails)... ...
