Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Tongan archipelago has been inhabited for perhaps 3000 years, since settlement in late Lapita times. The culture of its inhabitants has surely changed greatly over this long time period. Before the arrival of European explorers in the late 1600s and early 1700s, the Tongans were in frequent contact with their nearest Oceanic neighbors, Fiji and Samoa. In the 1800s, with the arrival of Western traders and missionaries, Tongan culture changed dramatically. Some old beliefs and habits were thrown away and others adopted. Some accommodations made in the 1800s and early 1900s are now being challenged by changing Western civilization. Hence Tongan culture is far from a unified or monolithic affair, and Tongans themselves may differ strongly as to what it is "Tongan" to do, or not do. Contemporary Tongans often have strong ties to overseas lands. They may have been migrant workers in New Zealand, or have lived and traveled in New Zealand, Australia, or the United States. Many Tongans now live overseas, in a Tongan diaspora, and send home remittances to family members (often aged) who prefer to remain in Tonga. Tongans themselves often have to operate in two different contexts, which they often call anga fakatonga, the traditional Tongan way, and anga fakaplangi, the Western way. A culturally adept Tongan learns both sets of rules and when to switch between them. Any description of Tongan culture that limits itself to what Tongans see as anga fakatonga would give a seriously distorted view of what people actually do, in Tonga, or in diaspora, because accommodations are so often made to anga fakaplangi. The following account tries to give both the idealized and the on-the-ground versions ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1949844 ... Read more

Product Description
Gitonga speaking basket weavers, mostly women, from Inhambane in the Southeast of Mozambique make colourful 'sipatsi' purses, and handbags. They are very creative in inventing new decorative designs and patterns. This book, resulting from thirty years of enquiring, collecting and observing, is unique. It presents a series of 'snapshots', which collectively constitute a short film that records an unfolding exploration of personal and collective memory, of symmetry, of combinations of colour and pattern, and of variations of order and logic to create new designs. The book includes a catalogue of over 700 different decorative patterns.
In several chapters, activities and problems for exploration in mathematics (teacher) education have been presented, underscoring the scientific and educational wealth of the 'sipatsi' as a mathematical construct. (422 pp.) ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! A taboo is a strong social prohibition (or ban) relating to any area of human activity or social custom that is sacred and forbidden based on moral judgement and sometimes even religious beliefs. Breaking the taboo is usually considered objectionable or abhorrent by society. The term comes from the Tongan language, and appears in many Polynesian cultures. In those cultures, a tabu (or tapu or kapu) often has specific religious associations. When an activity or custom is taboo, it is forbidden and interdictions are implemented concerning it, such as the ground set apart as a sanctuary for criminals. Some taboo activities or customs are prohibited under law and transgressions may lead to severe penalties. Other taboos result in embarrassment, shame, and rudeness. Although critics and/or dissenters may oppose taboos, they are put into place to avoid disrespect to any given authority, be it legal, moral and/or religious. An example of use in this context is: Incest is taboo. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A rare publication on a rare subject
This is a well thought out book with accounts of all the bird species of Tonga.Illustrations of the species are in pen and ink.All of the expected 43 species of Tonga are included with drawings of each, field marks described, the islands that they are found on, similar species, and habitat notes. There is a checklist included in the front of the book. The book is light enough to easily carry into the field and would fit easily into a large pocket or daypack.

Mr. Cook was a Peace Corps volunteer and birder that lived in Tonga for two years and this is his summary study of the birds of Tonga. This book is an excellent guide for beginners with a new interest in the birds of Tonga or for the visiting experienced birder looking for the species expected here and having this guide as a good checklist. ... Product Description
The island nations of the South Pacific have an incredible oral history, their folklore and myths past down through the generations. This book is a fantastic collection of stories from such a vast area as the south pacific but share a common heritage. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork. ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Radio Tonga (also known by call letters A3Z) is Tonga's main commercial radio station, founded in 1961 by Queen Salote Tupou III, and operating as a service of the Tonga Broadcasting Commission (TBC). Its slogan is "The Call of the Friendly Islands". Radio Tonga currently broadcasts services on three separate frequencies. The most far-reaching of all Radio Tonga's services, this channel broadcasts daily from 6am to midnight, on a frequency of 1017 kHz. This is the only service of TBC that has been in operation since TBC's inception in 1961. It features local, Pacific & international news, as well as Tongan music, and overseas retro music, mostly from the seventies & eighties. Several local church organisations and businesses have weekly programs, and, though it is government-owned and funded, a significant source of its profit relies on in-house commercial advertising. In the event of local emergencies, such as tropical cyclones, Radio Tonga has been known to stay on the air all night with constant cyclone updates from Tonga's Meteorological Service. ... From the supplier: Valerio Valeri's assertion that Tongan kingship myths were not based on brother and sister incest and matriarchial interference is false. Previous studies on Tongan kingship myths conclude that mothers were instrumental in installing their sons as kings by urging their sons to kill their fathers. Moreover, Valeri has failed to address several other key issues in the role of women in Tongan kingship myths.
