I thought this book was okay. It had a lot of great information in it and some was useless. I like how it showed every detail about the titanic. When they finished the first chapter I thought that the rest of the book was all background information about the ship. When they wrote about the boarding of the rescue boats it showed that they were not prepared for a crash but I thought was interesting. When they wrote about loading the boats with supplies it showed that they have to take a lot of recourses on their trip. I don't think the position of every boat was needed. The chapter on the captain growing up was also not needed in this book. I think that after the first chapter it got a little less interesting when they told you how they got the bodies it was helpful because it showed you that it was worse than most people thought. I think that all the people who sued the ship and for how much was a cool part of the story. It showed that it was an expensive crash not only to the owner but to the people. Over all this book was okay I think that a lot of it was filler but also a lot of it was good information.

BEST SHORT TITANIC BOOK
This is probably my favorite short book on the Titanic.It may not have all the material available elsewhere, but for a pretty quick read, it is about as good as they come.Those who like to curl up and read history books should have a great time here.

Authors Eaton and Haas have written several Titanic books, and in most they have skipped over the sinking itself and concentrated on other aspects of the disaster.Here the sinking is the focus.The 1912 disaster unfolds for the reader.A wonderful set of illustrations complements the text as well.

GREAT BOOK.
I have studied TITANIC most of life and before the movie, TITANIC, It was hard to find TITANIC books. This one and Don Lynch's TITANIC AN ILLUSTRATED history were thebest out. This is like a dictonary. It has the mostinformaition of all TITANIC books. I would recomend this book to anyone. Itis a great book for the begginer for its info and great price. BUY THISBOOK!

amazing and detailed.10/10 for the breath taking pictures
before james camereon released his 'titanic'I was unaware of any facts about the great ship ,except for the fact that she hit an iceberg and sank with the loss of 1500 lives.now however after reading countless booksand articles i have compiled a detailed knowledge of her .this book ,althogh not 100% acurate is very good and deserves to be up there withbooks such as walter lords 'a night to remember'if you are not atitanic fan, you will be after reading this book.the pictures to are breathtaking

A Survivor's Account of the Sinking of the Titanic
I made allowances for the old-style of writing...the real value is that this was the freshest account of the disaster by an adult male survivor.Other than that,it can't compare to the well-written tales from Stanley Lord,A Night to Remember.

Error on opening page
Perhaps I should read the book before I rate it but I just opened the first page and it claims that John B Thayer died in the 1980's which is not true.He committed suicide in 1945 after the death of his son in WWII.I will read the book however and then rate it again.

A survivor.
A fantastic albeit chilling recount of what happened that fateful night, from the hands of someone who has been there. Cant possibly be better than that, and hasn't been out of print since 1913.

A Good but Brief Account of the Sinking; There Are Better Books Which Include Gracie's Story
I have read Archibald Gracie's account of the sinking and while the tales of his survival and the aftermath are at times very interesting and useful, I feel that they pale in comparison to that of fellow Titanic passenger, Lawrence Beesley, a teacher by profession and a fine writer. Beesely's accounts are so well written and vividly drawn that you feel as if you are on the ship with him before and during the sinking, as well as in the lifeboats and later upon the Carpathia, heading for New York. His account of the entire Titanic tragedy is so complete that nearly 100 years later much of what he has written remains one of the most fact filled testimonies ever recorded. He writes with sensitivity and genteelness, and is masterful at describing visually what he and others saw and felt during that fateful night in April, 1912.

But whether you prefer Gracie or Beesely, you can get both in the book "The Story of the Titanic As Told by Its Survivors".A great read which offers the writings of other Titanic survivors as well, all in one volume.

A Must Read
Colonel Archibald Gracie was on board the Titanic when it sank. He was one of the lucky men who was able to cling to a capsized boat for survival. He details his account of the crossing, both before and after the iceberg. He mentions many people that he spoke with on the voyage, hoping to bring comfort to any families whose loved ones he encountered. The book seems to have been a form of therapy for the man and also an attempt to help those with questions after the sinking.

The book is written in 1912 language, but it is still very readable and easy to understand. It is really an excellent resource for specific information; Gracie examines each lifeboat individually with passenger's names (except for the 3rd class) and relays incidents from each compiled from testimony from those in each boat. He uses official documents like the court trial transcripts for his book, making it very credible.

Also included is a short account of John Thayer from the 40s. He was only 17 when the ship sank and lost his father of the same name in the tragedy. Thayer was another of the men clinging to the capsized boat that saved Gracie's life. His testimony enforces many of the things said by Gracie. ... Read more

a great book on titanic
i glad the canadianvictims stories are finally being told.the author tell poignant stories about the people who surivie and die that horrible night in the north atlantic.

A Most Excellent Book
I loved this book from start to finish. Alan Hustak did a superb job of telling the stories of the Canadians who were on board the doomed ship in April 1912. The Baxter Family touched me the most when the son "Quigg" carried his mother to the lifeboat and gave her his silver flask of brandy and told everyone to keep their spirits up. His sister Zette and his lady friend also survived. If you like Titanic history then you must read this book.

Canadians who went down with Titanic
Amid the craze about the Titanic that the James Cameron film created, many Titanic books were published. This is a rare account, more a list of biographies, of some of the more interesting Canadians who boarded the great ill-fated ship. Something Special!
It seems just about everyone is writing a book on the Titanic these days, and many of these new titles are worthy additions to the literature. But it is a rare and exciting discovery when you find a book that breakscompletely new ground uncovering a portion of the Titanic story never toldbefore.

Alan Hustak's book is one of these groundbreading works. His bookis about the 130 passengers on the Titanic that were bound for Canada. Hewrites about who these people were, why they were on the ship, as well astheir eventual fates. He tells about people from all walks of life from theproud and wealthy in first class to the immigrants in third class.

In retrospect, it is amazing that a book on this subject has not been writtensooner. Some of the most recognizable names of the drama, Arthur Peuchen,the Countess of Rothes, the Allison baby - even Eva Hart, all were boundfor Canada. Yet in most other titles their Canadian connection is barelymentioned, if not completely ignored.

The author has put an important,but neglected, aspect of the Titanic story back into the spotlight.

I must admit that when I bought this book I thought I was going to get some interesting glimpse of life aboard Titanic and of its sinking through Canadian passengers, but I was disappointed. This is more like a book ofthe family history of each Canadian passenger. It rarely delves intointeresting Titanic facts and instead reminds us of information that hasalready been written. Great loss of life
Dave Bryceson's (1997) book is the culmination of years of painstaking research and what is, for the author, an enduring fascination for the impact of this great maritime disaster not only upon the lives of those who perished and their relatives, but also the great sense of public participation in the private grief of those affected by it.

Just very occassionally, in more modern times, a great human catastrophe affects a whole nation or group of nations. Not so much because of the number of people killed or injured, but for reasons that are more subtle than that.

'The Titanic Disaster' captures the effect upon ordinary people of this enormous public tragedy, through a collection of press reports, announcements and published photographs which followed the events of 14th and 15th April 1912.

Nice book - but too pricey for what you get!
I would have liked to rate this book far higher than three stars - but when comparing value to content - the book doesn't cut it.Softcover, OK paper and absolutely no illustrations, save the cover - it's simply not worth $35.00 ($37.49 with shipping and handling).Comparing it to Beveridge and Hall's book which was self-published - at $18.95 (on sale now for $16.95) the book seems even steeper in price.

The author says that the book "Art of Titanic" by Marschall is "pricey" - compared to the price of this book for what you get the Marschall book is a bargain!

The author did a great job of compiling all the sources, and it's a good source book for books, films and the like.I just have reservations concerning the price.

Escapist Fun
Ever since I stayed up all night reading "A Night to Remember" by Walter Lord when I was twelve years old, I've been interested in the Titanic. I've read many non-fiction books on the subject, but never any Titanic fiction until now. Like the non-fiction masterpiece "A Night to Remember", this 1976 novel is given credit for keeping interest in the Titanic alive in the days before it was discovered by Robert Ballard. Because of this reputation, I picked "Raise the Titanic" up at a recent used book sale even though the back cover blurb sounded really far-fetched.

After reading it I still say it's far fetched, but the part I thought sounded the most ridiculous, the international espionage aspect, was actually well-done and very enjoyable. The part about raising the Titanic is beyond far-fetched but still fun to think about. I was a little disappointed that the scientific part about how they did it was not as detailed as I was hoping, I think the tension could have been ratcheted up some by making the reader more invested in the process.

Of course we now know since the wreck's discovery that it's condition in real life is much poorer than how it was found in the fictional book, but it is enjoyable to imagine "What if?" I have not seen the movie made from this book and I don't know if it's good, but I understand why it was made into one - the story is fast moving and has mystery, action, a little horror, a little sex (albeit silly), and the potential for mind-blowing visuals. If you're in the mood for adventure in a quick, escapist read that you don't have to take too seriously, "Raise the Titanic" delivers.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!
This was my first book by Cussler and I thought it was very entertaining. I've just ordered a couple more books online and I can't wait to get my hands on them. I'm not really a big adventure fan however from time to time I like to get my hands on a Rollins/DOUGLAS/Preston book and now CLIVE CUSSLER.!!!

Clever Novel Follows An Interesting Title
I read this book quite some time back & remember it clearly. The novel's title caught my attention & I bought it based on that. Not disappointed at all, I found a cleverly woven fictional tale based on the title. An excellent read that launched me as a Cussler fan

Clive Cussler can really spin a great tale.I wouldn't miss any of his books.I wish I could find the movie.

Great Book
Very good.Couldn't put this book down once I got into it.The artwork was very interesting.Between the authors narrative, the survivor accounts, and the illustrations, I really got into this book, which is about the last night.

Outstanding
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. There were some real treats in it like the analysis of Captain Smith, who was portrayed by piecing together a whole bunch of survivor statements, which ended up showing a captain who remained involved and on the ball after the collision.I also liked the treatment of a potential third boat (besides the Californian)in the area during and after the Titanic's sinking.This is the first book I read that also showed the captain leaving the bridge only minutes before the impact (instead of the more common portrayal of a little after 9 p.m.)Very interesting.

There are a lot of Titanic books out there, and this is one of several of them that is both informative and entertaining (there are some enjoyable new illustrations in this book as well).

Excellent
Paul Quinn really does his homework - and follows through with the hard but necessary research that is not evident in so many other Titanic books. He goes through all the court transcripts with a fine-tooth comb, apparently with no particular ax to grind, and simply lets the facts lead where they may. For example, we learn that First Officer Murdoch, who was evidently involved in the final panic and shooting near the bridge, was also much more involved in both port and starboard boat launchings than has been suggested in earlier works. Up to the moment of the rush(s) on the last boat(s), Murdoch was the one officer who kept his head and launched the boats properly. Quinn is also a good painter, and is the first artist to actually portray what survivors saw (and could not see) under real lighting conditions.

New Insights into Old Sources
Paul Quinn has an ability to look at what everyone else has seen (chiefly the British and American Inquiries into the loss of the Titanic) and tothink what no one else has thought. This ability defines genius. In hislatest book, for example, he follows First Officer William Murdochthroughout the sinking and reveals that it was Murdoch's competence thatsaved MOST of the people who got off in the lifeboats that night, revealingthat there was much more to this man than would be suggested by those of uswho have spent what now appears to be too much time focusing on the lastten minutes of his life. One may not always agree with Quin's conclusions(for example, some fine details of the flooding sequence); but agree ordisagree, he always makes you think, and rethink, what you thought youalready knew. I'll continue to buy all of his books on this subject, justto see what breath of fresh air he next blows on to a tale from the goodold, old, old days.

An Incredible Book on the Titanic and its Aftermath
A wonderful book, filled with pictures, of what happened after the Titanic sank.There are terrific stories of the survivors and how those who drowned were recovered and sent to Halifax for burial, or held there untiltheir families came for the bodies.

There are photos taken of the scenewith literally hundreds of caskets on the boats as the bodies wererecovered.Halifax has a Titanic musuem there with artifacts and otherthings of interest that even those with a casual interest will appreciate.

TITANIC AND US HISTORY TOO
Titanic books tend to focus on a particular theme or aspect of the ship or tragedy.Examples include the role of the mystery ship, experiences of famous passengers, theories about why the ship actually sank, even the music and food on the Titanic.Historian Wade chooses the American Inquiry and gives us a look at the disaster from the American perspective.We are told a lot about the disaster and US history as well.

Wade's writing style is as interesting as it is pleasing to the eye. He begins with Titanic leaving on its maiden voyage from Southampton, full of hope and excitement.He then quickly shifts to the scene of confusion and horror right after the sinking, when few facts were known.In the next chapters the sinking comes to life through the Inquiry.

Naturally, a whole host of characters are discussed here, including even President Taft and his military aid Butt, who perished in the disaster.Wade does not stop with the inquiry, but goes on to discuss the election campaign of 1912 in later chapters.The disaster's cultural impact is covered as well. Readers will learn a lot more about the time period than from most other works.Few will put it down.

Good stuff here
I felt the book had an in depth look at the aftermath of the sinking and not the sinking itself. I had always heard this and that but to read it quoted for the transcripts of the inquiry is awesome. Great book.

One of the most outstanding, well researched, well written and most useful books in your Titanic library
I have read scores of books about Titanic and I can honestly say that if you are a serious Titanic buff you will likely find this to be one of the most outstanding, well researched, well written and most useful books in your library. The insights and conclusions that the author makes are truly satisfying to read. This books dispels a great many myths about the Titanic crew and it's performance in the hours leading up to the collision with the iceberg, as well as what they did and failed to do after the collision, most notably Captain Smith's failure to make sure that the few lifeboats they did have were filled to capacity. Of course, we know that they were not, and as a result some 500 people lost their lives unnecessarily. The book artfully examines the American Congressional investigation that convened after the accident, elucidates their findings in ways that other authors have not, tying together the many disparate threads found here and there in various books, leaving you the reader in command of detail and facts that put all the many "puzzle pieces" together. It's a great read, which I can wholeheartedly recommend. I only wish that I had found this book years ago!

Fills A Gap in the Titanic Literature
The major emphasis of the book is the United States Senate investigation into the wreck of the R.M.S. Titanic and focuses on the efforts of Senator William Alden Smith (R-Mich.), who chaired the investigative subcommittee.The book describes the thoroughness and determination of Senator Smith as he conducted the investigation and goes to great lengths to demonstrate that the United States investigation was equal to or better than the one conducted in the United Kingdom.

The major flaw in the book is its attempt to do double duty as a biography of Senator Smith.The book also contains minor factual errors that could have been weeded out by more careful proof-reading.

This book provides an excellent review of the Titanic sinking, with the main focus being the U.S. Senate inquiry into the disaster led by Senator Smith of Michigan.There is general background information on the Titanicitself, passengers, etc, however most of the information presented is basedon the Senate inquiry.Actual selected transcripts of witnesses arereproduced, and one gets the flavor of this inquiry (the entire transcriptis much too long for one book) and the times it was performed in. This bookpresents quite a lot of information and background, especially on the timesand the social climate in which this disaster took place. The social impactof the disaster is also examined by the Author in some depth.This book isa must have for all who are interested in this subject, however keeping inmind that the main focus is the U.S. Senate inquiry. Well Written and Factual
I'm a Titanic buff, but it had been a while since I'd picked up a book on the subject. When I saw this one in our school's library, I decided just to flip through it to see what information it held. Imagine my surprise and delight when I realized that it was chock full of photos, information, and fun facts; I immediately checked it out and brought it home to peruse at a more leisurely pace and I'm so glad I did.

There is really nothing terribly new in the pages of this Eyewitness book, but it presents the story of the Titanic from its inception to its rediscovery with lots of detail so that anyone wanting to know more about the tragedy would come away enlightened. I absolutely loved the photos (a few of which I didn't recall having ever seen before), and I loved how many of the people so well known (and even unknown) were brought to life in these pages. Every piece of information I read had its basis in fact, and I was pleased to see that there was even mention of the debate over whether or not the debris field should be disturbed. This book gives a good overall look at the great ship and its demise without shying away from the hard stuff (descriptions even include the recovery of bodies), and it reads in such a way that people of all ages should be able to glean information in a very entertaining way. Highly recommended for readers of all ages.

An excellent book, and it arrived promptly. I had already seen the book at a bookstore, so I knew what I wanted as a gift for a grandson temporarily obsessed with the story of the Titanic.

A Great Chapter Book
My Son loves these books he discovered in his school library. I have looked everywhere for them & found them here. He earns them when he completes his chores. He loved this one, because he has been reading everything he can on the Titanic. My son is 8 years old.

An excellent resource for pre-teens interested in the story of the Titanic
On Board the Titanic is an interesting little book that covers its topic well for its target audience of pre-teenagers.Telling the story through the eyes of two survivors, including wireless operator Harold Bride, it helps the young reader personalize the awful events of that fateful April night in 1912.When you see pictures of survivors and the loved ones they lost, it really helps bring home the point of the human tragedy inextricably linked to this fascinating subject.

The illustrations are excellent.Color paintings help reveal the unrivalled majesty and beauty of the Titanic in ways no black and white photos ever could.Helpful diagrams also help younger readers understand just how and why the "unsinkable" ship actually sank.Additionally, the book contains some fascinating little facts and tidbits.I don't ever remember hearing or reading the first thing about animals on board the Titanic, but here I discovered that there were dogs on the ship.Some good soul freed them from the kennels at some point during the Titanic's fateful hour, and two of the dogs ultimately survived the ordeal, having been pulled onto lifeboats by their owners.That alone made this book a worthwhile read for me, and I have to believe that Shelley Tanaka's On Board the Titanic would definitely be an excellent book for younger readers interested in the story of the Titanic.

oh em gee its saweeeet!
i found the title of this book while looking in the index of another great Titanic book (882.5 Amazing Answers to Your Questions About the Titanic) and it said 'Harold Bride', who i am very obsessed with. i figured "what the heck, i'll read it if harold bride is in it" and checked out of my local library. i read it cover to cover in about 30 minutes and when i finished i wanted there to be more! this book is very educational and is not one of those boring Titanic books that you only skim through and look at the pretty pictures, since it actually has some sort of a story line. i reccommend it for kids going into 3rd through 7th grades, even though im in 8th. enjoy the book!

Great book for kids
When my five-year old son became obsessed with the Titanic I was a bit worried, because of the morbidity of the subject mainly -we tend to forget that about 1500 people died in this historic incident.So I was very pleased to see that there are actually books on the subject written with children in mind - and this one is very good.It's written from the view points of two young men who were actually on the Titanic and survived - a young man from First Class named Jack Thayer, and Harold Bride, one of the ship's wireless operators and a true hero.Not too scary, full of fascinating details about the ship and an enjoyable read for grown-ups, too!Highly recommended.

Irish editor boasts about her author's book!
I am the original editor who commissioned Titanic in its first, Irish, edition. I thought it would be interesting to share its origins with you.

As a children's book editor I had always wanted to publish a book on theTitanic as it was a story which fascinated me as a child. When the author,Arthur McKeown, ran some ideas past me for his next project, Titanic wasamongst them and I lept at it! Arthur wrote a very good text, telling thestory of Titanic, which was built in Belfast, in simple language.

Thewell-known Irish artist, Peter Hogan, was chosen because he is an avidsailor, one of the first Irishmen to sail around the world,single-handedly, in a Tahiti Ketch he built himself. He was, in fact, aboutto set sail on another world voyage when he completed the lastillustrations for Titanic which are based on original photographs anddrawings of the great ship.

Peter Hogan subsequently ship-wrecked in theMediterranean. He was saved but his beloved boat, the Molly B, was lost.His much publicised shipwreck was surely one of the most dramatic PR stuntsever to sell a book!

Titanic sold very well in Ireland and in the Uk. Itwas on the bestseller list for months both before and after the filmopened.

Excellent!
This has to be one of my favorites from the "Dear America" series! No girl should pass up this lovely book. It is the fictional story of Margaret Ann Brady as she sets sail on the Titanic's first voyage. Amidst all the excitement, no one realizes the devastating fate of that ship. It will be a horrible shock to all.

I immensely loved "Voyage on the Great Titanic". It's worthy of being read a second time.

A Must for Titanic Buffs as well!
I don't remember where I got this book but it was secondhand. The original owner had left the receipt when the owner bought it at the Titanic exhibition in Atlantic City. It's a nice little surprise. Anyway, the story of Margaret Ann Brady, an orphan girl, who is hired by Mrs. Carstairs to travel with her aboard the doomed Titanic is quite interesting and it's pretty accurate story-telling.

I liked it the best of the Dear America series so far. Since I am interested in all things Titanic, I enjoyed this book very much especially since it captures the era, the class system, and catastrophe at sea on April 14,1915.

The older you are, the less likely you will enjoy the book
I read the book when I was 13, back then I thought it was a really great book. Not so much for educational purposes as it provides no information about the ship beyond what everyone already know from the movie, but rather it's a Cinderella story for a teen who loves Edwardian history. However when I read it again as a 21 year old recently, the book just fell flat. The plot is implausible, the dialogues are uninteresting, and the entire book just screams "stuffy". I still would thank the author for writing it though as I really did enjoy it back then.

The book "A Voyage on the Great Titanic" is a very spectacular book because it tells about a girl who lived through the crash of the Titanic. This book is about a young girl whose name was Marget. She lived a horrid life when the Titanic crashed. She wanted to study in New York but her dream did not come true. The Titanic crashed in 1912. They did everything they could to save people. Ships and boats called to say that where they were going there was a big iceburg, but the Titanic did not listen to them. So that's when......

Wry and Tragic
Voyage on the Great Titanic / 0-590-96273-6

Voyage on the Great Titanic is unusual for a Dear America installation for several reasons. The narrator is not an American, nor does the story originate there - instead, Margaret is a native of the British isles and is traveling to America as a companion to a wealthy patron, with the intent to settle in America permanently on arrival. The novel is shorter than most, and deals very linearly with the Titanic disaster. Although these books are enjoyable for parents and children alike, I usually try to review these with parents in mind, so here we go.

Once again, high standards are met here for historical accuracy and realism. Margaret's tale of the Titanic's destruction and her fear and numbing sense of loss is portrayed perfectly. Details are carefully preserved here, both in the fictional diary and in the fantastic timeline presented in the epilogue. Prior to the disaster, the narrator is wry and witty and, in fact, is easily my favorite Dear America heroine. The British perspective on American customs is also very interesting and an unexpected bonus from a Dear America book.

Be aware that the book accurately portrays that many (indeed, most) of the passengers and crew on the Titanic went down with the ship and died. Movingly, the crew is shown as being fully aware of their fate and quietly accepting the inevitable. Frighteningly, Margaret is made very aware that the poorer passengers on the ship (passengers which she could easily have joined, in other circumstances, due to her own poverty) have no access to the lifeboats and drown tragically. While none of this is surprising when considering a novel on the Titanic, it should be noted that the scene is portrayed very poignantly and may not be acceptable for all children.
