Product Description

Author, essayist, playwright, and screenwriter, David Mamet is often referred to as the quintessential American writer. His works are known for their clever and terse dialogue and have earned him a Pulitzer Prize for Glengarry Glen Ross and Oscar nominations for House of Games as well as The Spanish Prisoner, Wag the Dog, and The Verdict. This comprehensive biography uses extensive theater and film archives to reveal in detail his ideas on writing--including the genesis for many of his plays--acting, and directing. Beginning with his Chicago origins, the work goes on to cover his relationship to Judaism, his reputation for machismo, as well as discussions of and excerpts from early plays and stories that have never before been referenced in print. Also included are interviews with key actors and directors such as William H. Macy, Mike Nussbaum, Robert Brustein, and Neil Pepe.

1-0 out of 5 stars Textual Verbosity in Chicago
I was a David Mamet fanatic in high school. I had every play, essay, and acting text he wrote and would often read scenes with my friends from his most obscure works, like The Shawl (how did I not get beat up in high school?).

Later in life, a monologue from his play, Squirrels, was at the forefront of my auditioning repertoire.

As an actor, I was fascinated with the amount of information his scripts didn't give me, forcing me to fill in the blanks. As a reviewer of Squirrels once noted of Mamet's unique style, "The words of the script are read to establish the idea of what is happening. Then, they go to work on the sub-text that lies below the written word."

I've recently been wading my way through Ira Nadels just-released biography of Mamet called David Mamet: A Life in the Theatre, and find that even I am not enough of a Mamet-phile to appreciate the minutia of biographical facts which fill its covers--down to the street addresses of Mamet's various dwellings.

The writing has a very academic feel to it, as though I am reading someone's doctoral thesis on the playwright. Were I directing a Mamet play, or doing research on him for some other reason, the book would be invaluable. A page turner, it is not.

The book begins, as most biographies do, detailing Mamet's childhood in East Hyde Park, Chicago, tracing the origins of his strong work ethic, love of language and no-nonsense personality to the upwardly mobile aspirations of his parents, specifically his father, Bernie, a labor lawyer who drilled into Mamet at a young age that he'd better "be good at something," and who trained him daily to improve his awareness of language.

We follow Mamet through the various phases of his theatre-centered life--ushering at Off-Broadway's The Fantasticks, dabbling unsuccessfully in acting, and discovering his true talent as a writer, director, acting teacher and eventually moving into screen writing.

What stands out to me as his most important roles, which will likely leave the largest footprint on the theatre landscape is his role as teacher--of acting, writing, directing--and his essays about what a life in the theatre should be. He earned the nickname "Teach" amongst his poker-playing buddies in the early 70s, which eventually became a character in his Pulitzer-Prize-winning play, American Buffalo.

Among the most fascinating journeys the book lays out is the organic development of Mamet's style of writing and acting--sparse and at its extreme almost zombie-like--the rhythm of which is instantly recognizable as his. He began his studies in Sanford Meisner's Neighborhood Theatre Playhouse, and continued to mold the ideas originated by Stanislavsky and revised by Stella Adler until he had created his own unique style, in which action reins supreme, and the text of the play is merely a framework to express what the characters want.

`"Good drama,' he writes, `has no stage directions.' We increase our enjoyment and involvement by the absence of the descriptive. The best productions occur in the mind of the audience; consequently, the best acting is straight up, emotionless, and clipped."

From his Bambi vs. Godzilla, On the Nature, Purpose and Practice of the Movie Business, Mamet says the three "magic questions" in writing any scene are Who wants what from whom? What happens if they don't get it? and Why now?

Nadel's style of writing, like his subject's, is very down-to-business. There is a wealth of information contained in these nearly three hundred pages. Unlike his subject, however, there is very little humor along the way. I was delighted to find this little anecdote about a third of the way in, which at least made me chuckle on the shuttle from JFK into the City.

"One evening, [David] Mamet left the theatre unhappy with his work.... A woman came up to him and said `God Bless you: You are the Savior of the American Theatre. I have been to see your play six times.' I cheered up and thanked her,' Mamet writes, and told her 'she had given me hope and that, yes, I, was going to go home and write. I thanked her again.' `Not at all, Mr. Durang,' she replied."

Nadel places two Mamet quotes on the page between the dedication and the introduction to the book. One of them, from Mamet's A Life in the Theatre sums up what the reader is about to get him/herself into:

Robert: How do you want it?
John: Give it to me straight.

That's exactly what you get in Nadel's book: just the facts. If you want more than that, pick up a copy of American Buffalo, or Glengary Glenn Ross, or The Duck Variations. Mamet's life is in there too, and it's probably a more interesting read.

1-0 out of 5 stars As Mamet might put it...
...What a f***in' waste of time. Whether you're a fan of Mamet's or---like me---find Big Dave an increasingly sententious, contentious, and pretentious self-parody, there's one thing I hope we'll agree on:Nadel's biography is to be avoided. How did a book this badly written, this badly edited, this badly designed make its way into print? Factual errors abound and typos hover like flies over carrion. Combine these mechanical flaws with a steadfastly uncritical attitude to the book's subject and the dreariest sort of academic prose and you've got something that's only taking up space on the shelves. The contents are poorly organized, chronologically confusing and sometimes downright unintelligible. Mamet's worth a biography, all right, but this ain't the one. ... Read more

Product Description
This is Theodore Mann's account of his own and the Circle's remarkable history. At times it's difficult to tell where the two diverge, so integral to the company has he been. From Thornton Wilder to Al Pacino, it seems as if every great actor and playwright of the past fifty years has had his or her best work at Circle. As befits a story about theatre, it is at times comic and at times tragic. If you ever wondered how Off-Broadway ever came to be (and how it ever managed to survive), this is the tale to read. DVD BONUS: As a special bonus, An American Theatre Revolution includes a DVD of the 1977 CBS-TV Camera Three program "Twenty Five Years of Circle in the Square." It features Dustin Hoffman, George C. Scott, Vanessa Redgrave, Colleen Dewhurst, James Earl Jones, and Mann himself talking about their experiences at the theatre and includes excerpts of such noted Circle in the Square productions as Death of a Salesman, Mourning Becomes Electra, and The Lady from the Sea. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars interesting book about an interesting "mann"
This is a book for theatre fans,,especially if your interested in the history of the modern off-broadway scene, and how it began

5-0 out of 5 stars So far no one has mentioned the DVD included!
I only had the opportunity to see one play at the original Circle In The Square Theater in the Village but we were charter subscribers when they moved uptown. I remember seeing Irene Pappas in "Medea" and James Earl Jones in "The Iceman Cometh" to name just a few. Four times a year we'd take the train into Manhattan to be engaged by some of the best talent in the theater world performing classics we knew and others we didn't.

Like the prior reviewer, I found this book fascination but - to me - the real bonus was the DVD that is included in the back of the book. Taken from a series produced for use in schools in 1975 - for the 25th Anniversary of the CITS - the 90 minute presentation consists of five segments of both interviews with Ted Mann and some celebrated actors (Dustin Hoffman, George C. Scott, Colleen Dewhurst, Paul Rudd, James Earl Jones, and Vanessa Redgrave) as well as brief scenes from plays these artists performed on the CITS stage. The interviews ask about how each actor started and more specifically about their years on the stage. The print is acceptable and - during the interview with Mann there is an annoying red "bleed" beside his face.

Long before James Lipton started his "In Side The Actor's Studio" show this document was recorded. It is as fascinating as anything Lipton ever did (without the fawning over his guests). If you need further encouragement to get this book, let the DVD convince you.

4-0 out of 5 stars The O'Neill Connection
I haven't worked out yet exactly how old Theodore Mann must be, but he must be one of the oldest people I have ever read an autobiography by.

Nearly everyone he knows from the glory days of the Circle in the Square is dead, so he must feel pretty much free to give his own version of the events that changed American theater and the reputation of Eugene O'Neill.Teddy Mann (or as George C Scott habitually called him, "Teedy,") was there and laid the groundwork, right at a time when O'Neill was a drug on the market and his last Broadway play, THE ICEMAN COMETH, had been a notable flop.Mann and his friend Jose Quintero stepped up, met Carlotta Monterey, fielded all the flak from naysayers, and put on triumphant productions of ICEMAN (with Jason Robards) and other O'Neill plays.Eventually they talked Carlotta (the widow O'Neill) into giving them the rights to stage US premieres for several of O'Neill's then unpublished plays, including LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT, HUGHIE, and MORE STATELY MANSIONS.

Theodore Mann saved the day when Florence Eldridge, creating the important role of Mary Tyrone, fell sick on the eve of the opening. He enlisted the famous Dr. Feelgood, Max Jacobson, to step in with an enormous suitcase filled with syringes and soon brought her up to fighting speed. He's filled with great stories like that about half-forgotten people. Why, there was even another Paul Rudd, not the actor of today, but another one back in the 1970s, whom Mann discovered. What's up with that? The two Paul Rudds look crazy different from another, and I have to say, the present day one is far better looking. He also describes the love affair between Amy Irving and Rex Harrison in piquant terms, I'd like to see a whole docudrama about the interaction between ingenue and old man.

Despite continual rumors, Teedy and Quintero were never lovers, just friends from Woodstock.Indeed Theodore Mann's theater is pretty much a straight theater, with plenty of couples and lots of children. He discovered both Rip Torn and Geraldine Page and gave early work to trailblazers like Dustin Hoffman and Vanessa Redgrave. The Circle in the Square had a long history of reviving forgotten plays and renewing interest in dormant careers, like George C. Scott's 1983 production of Noel Coward's PRESENT LAUGHTER, which showed the world that the man who played General Patton could also play Garry Essendine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Journeys in the Night: Creating a New American Theatre with Circle in the Square: A Memoir
This book was well written and includes many significant and intimate stories about the start of the American theatre and Eugene O'Neill. There are many short and interesting stories about the acting giants in American theatre.Did you know that Director Jose Quintero met Ted Mann in Woodstock, and that is where the revival of O'Neill plays began?

5-0 out of 5 stars The greats
This is such a wonderful book in the way it reviews a spectacular time in history. Some legendary actors got their start at the Circle in the Square such as Dustin Hoffman, George C. Scott, Al Pacino and many more. This theatre has been the behind the American theatre as we know it and this book tells the stories of the Circle in the Square and Theodore Mann, a driving force. ... Product Description
Providing thorough coverage of the methods and tools required in studying historical and contemporary theatre, this introduction examines the complexities of a rapidly changing and dynamic discipline. Following a cross-cultural perspective, the book surveys the ways theatre and performance are studied by looking initially at key elements such as performers, spectators and space. The central focus is on methodology, which is divided into sections covering theatre theory, historiography and textual and performance analysis. The book covers all the main theatrical genres - drama, opera and dance - providing students with a comparative, integrated perspective. Designed to guide students through the academic dimension of the discipline, the volume emphasizes questions of methodology, research techniques and approaches, and will therefore be relevant for a wide variety of theatre studies courses. Informative textboxes provide background on key topics, and suggestions for further reading are included at the end of each chapter. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what you've been looking for...
I've read many books on this subject in the vain hope that they will give me advice on how to actually CREATE theatre on a PRACTICAL level: not to be patronised in the process or made to feel that because I don't have enough experience I shouldn't even bother. Well, PRAISE BE TO THE THEATRE GODS, I've found a book that not only shows me how to practically create and produce non-text based theatre but to actually enjoy it too!
The writers' enthusiasm leaps off of the page and soon injects that same enthusiasm into the reader...whether they are a student, keen theatregoer, professional or amateur.
The presentation is wonderful: the photographs, illustrations, checklists, 'prompt points' and the excellent clearly and expertly written text etc. all add to the overall feeling of being 'shown' how to make theatre through the benefit of the contributors' collective and extensive experience, not being 'taught' or being bombarded with unhelpful theories by teachers whom have never produced a theatre event.
It is obvious to all those who read this book that the author is an excellent teacher. The book is written in such a way as to give immensely helpful advice to the reader but essentially demonstrates that theatre is a process of discovery and the reader needs to discover their own working methodologies, so they can create theatre that is socially applicable to their world - think of the information in this book as the foundations for your own theatre creating process...
In all, an excellent book and source of advice. Go on! Make use their expertise, experience and talent to create and have fun with your own productions! Worth every penny!

Theatre is presented as a global and multicultural form that reflects both traditional and evolving world views. While the American commercial theatre and European forms are central to the text, alternative theatres are placed side by side for comparison and contrast in each chapter, thus avoiding the sense of “otherness”created by devoting separate chapters to diversity and departures from the western tradition.

Product Description
In the Company of Actors is a wonderful ensemble of entertaining and illuminating discussions with sixteen of the most celebrated and prestigious actors in contemporary theatre, film and television. The book provides lively dialogue among the very different personalities of the participants. The actors are vital characters--by turns witty, analytical and intuitive, and all offer frank and telling anecdotes about their life and work.
Carole Zucker covers a wide range of topics including the actors' main childhood influences, their actor training, early acting experience, preparation for roles and sound advice for coping with actors' problems such as creative differences with other actors or directors. Each actor also talks about the current state of the theater and film as well as their funny (and sometimes appalling) experiences in Hollywood. With 48 black and white photographs, In the Company of Actors offers invaluable insight into the art of acting.
Includes interviews with: Eileen Atkins, Alan Bates, Simon Callow, Judi Dench, Brenda Fricker, Nigel Hawthorne, Jane Lapotaire, Janet McTeer, Stephen Rea, Ian Richardson, Miranda Richardson, Fiona Shaw, Anthony Sher, David Suchet, Janet Suzman, Penelope Wilton. ... Read more

Don't let the "reflections" of the title throw you:this is no drowsy academic tome. This is a fascinating read for anyone interested in actors and acting. Many of the subjects are relatively unknown on thisside of the Atlantic, but if you care about the process of real acting, this book will take you in, chapter by chapter.Critic Kenneth Tynansaid "The study of actors should be a full-time task, worthy of thesame passionate scholarship which lepidopterists devote tobutterflies."What we have here is that passion's result, and CaroleZucker has given voice to the butterflies.

Carole Zucker has just given us the finest book ever written on British actors.'In the Company of Actors...' is an entertaining, informative and thorough investigation into the lives and craft of some of Britain andIreland's most popular and accomplished thespians. This particular book isso far away from the standard "actor's biography" that it wouldbe futile to compare it to any other publication around today. It simplystands apart on all level. It is most certainly destined to become aclassic. Meeting with such famous figures as Eileen Atkins, Alan Bates,Nigel Hawthorne, Stephen Rea and Miranda Richardson (among others), theauthor is cleverly dissolving herself into the background of theinterviewing process, thus allowing the actors to really open up and tofreely speak about what constitutes acting for theatre, film andtelevision. Zucker succeeds in creating a climate of intimacy never beforereached (in any given interview), and her book will make you feel like aprivileged reader with a direct access into the minds of these extremelytalented people. There are even moments of self-revelation which makes 'Inthe Company of Actors..' a brillant excercise in deep social interaction. It is an impressive display of professional savoir-faire on the part ofMrs. Zucker and a major contribution to acting studies as a whole. For theaspiring actor, the book also offers a lot of insights into the business.Whether it be Stephen Rea explaining the differences between the Irish,British and American film industries, or Academy Award nominee Janet McTeerdiscussing the difficulty of being a woman actor (in a male-dominatedworld), the book covers all bases from all angles, and no stones are leftunturned. 5-0 out of 5 stars Theatre World Volume 60 2003-2004
Love the book. I'm very happy that Amazon had the book for sale. I used
to be able to purchase the book at the in NYC but the book store closed.
I'm looking forward to Volume 61. The book lists all shows that opened in NYC for the season, with all casts, directors, awards. Also lists off broadway, off off broadway, regional productions. So if theatre is your love this series is for you. Thanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars The At Least Semi-Official Record of the Year in Theatre
One of the delights each year is to get the new copy of this book. It covers a year that's always a year or two back. This gives an opportunity to remember and reflect on the season that was.

2003-2004:

Some great new shows opened: Wicked, Avenue Q

Some others opened, and closed: Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks, which didn't even last six weeks.

Some shows opened to great critical aclaim: Anna in the Tropics (a couple of Tony's and a Pulitzer) -- I found it pretty boring and it lasted from November 16 to February 22.

There were some revivals: Fiddler on the Roof, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (Was this the roof year?).

There was some Shakespeare: Henry IV and King Lear.

Some really good shows closed: Cabaret, Man of La Mancha.

Some shows continued that may just go on forever: Beauty and the Beast, The Phantom of the Opera.

Not the best year ever, certainly not the worst. This book is the at least semi-official record of the year. It is basically the statistics and record of the year. It's a delight to read and remember. It's a permanent record of what happened.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive!
After some lovely color photos, John Willis and Ben Hodges delve into Theatre year 2003/2004.Photos, cast lists, and running dates for hundreds of shows.Shows are also grouped according to theatre company. At the end are more photos of Theatre World award recipients, past and present, as well as the longest running shows on Broadway (CATS comes in first, with 7, 485 performances.yikes.)

A must for any theater fan!

Product Description
Musicals! is an illustrated sourcebook for total theatre training, emphasizing the director's role in the three main building blocks for mounting a performance: preparation, production, and performance. Boland and Argentini provide a comprehensive, step-by-step theatre primer which will prove invaluable to musical directors, teachers, administrators, students, and actors. After the initial decisions are made, specific guidelines in preparing the stage picture, holding auditions and casting, and running the gamut of rehearsals are provided. Lighting, costumes, creating sets and scenery, and safety precautions are also discussed. The musical number and choreography are analyzed and defined, and advice on how to use color and solve multiple scene problems is given. With opening night approaching, a checklist of what must be done is enumerated and explained. The authors provide tips on publicity, running the box office, as well as the do's and don'ts of mounting the show and its final strike . Includes a glossary of theatrical terms, a selected bibliography, and recommended sources for scenic drops, costumes, and lighting equipment. ... Read more
