A Useful, Well Written Book
This useful and well written book is a staple among students of the history of cartography (HoC) in Texas.It was written as a companion piece to the first major HoC exhibit on Texas maps, put on by the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth.The exhibit then went on the road, showing at libraries and other venues throughout the state.The book was greeted with critical acclaim by scholars and lay readers alike, and the first edition quickly sold out.Its resale value shot up due to demand, until the Texas State Historical Society took it under wing and produced this reprint edition.Clearly then, in the view of many readers from diverse backgrounds, this is a very useful and worthwhile book.

When it was first published (1984), there was not much written about the HoC of Texas.The book quickly became the standard reference for HoC scholars and map collectors interested in Texas, a role its authors never foresaw.Indeed, they wrote in their Preface that "...our first goal has been to stimulate further inquiry and to add to the appreciation of the value of historic maps as tools in learning about any place, at any time."The book did just that.It has been one of several catalysts in the intervening years for a tremendous growth in appreciation, study, and publications dealing with Texas antiquarian maps.Unfortunately this has not yet led to a definitive catalogue of Texas maps, so Martin & Martin (as it is commonly known) continues play this role to which it never aspired.

The work is divided into three parts.The first is a series of brief introductory pieces, about 40 total pages.These trace, in terms accessible to the average reader, the evolution of maps and their role in Texas from the earliest period of exploration through the 20th century.While of interest to most readers, for those unfamiliar with the history of either Texas or cartography, they are especially helpful.The second section contains 16 color plates with no commentary.Following that there are 50 black and white plates.Each is a full page, faced by a page of well researched, easy to read commentary.The 16 color plates are repeated here so that commentary can be inserted.This may be puzzling at first, but was undoubtedly done to reduce costs.It was cheaper to place all the color in one "signature" for binding than to intersperse color printing throughout, even at the cost of repeating some pages.This is why this book retails on Amazon for under $30 instead of twice the price.

I hope this helps the prospective buyer appreciate the book and decide more easily whether this is the book you're looking for.

Expected something better
I paid over $45.00 I couldn't afford to spend on this book because I love maps and thought this book was going to be a bonanza of information and would serve as a great reference forever. Well, there are a lot of maps in this book, but not at all useful in the way I'd hoped. The most interesting (to me) thing that I learned from this book was a one-pager about the U.S. Coast Survey and its history. I keep thinking that one day, I will value this book more than I do now. Small Area
I agree with the other reviews that the area covered is a pretty small part of austin.

Great for navigating
This map is not for you if you want detailed street information about every nook and cranny of Austin proper. It is, however, a great "big picture" map that shows all the major roadways (and many, but not all, of the smaller streets). Due to its compact size, it obviously cannot include surrounding areas like Pflugerville, Round Rock, etc.This is a great tool for folks who aren't intimately familiar with the main city area and need to navigate to, say, the Capitol Building or UT. The lamination makes it nice and durable too. I can even use a wax pencil on it to mark places of interest, and then wipe off the marks afterward.

Absolutely, positively the worst Austin map ever
I've lived in Austin for 33 years, and I thought that a small, plastic map would be good if I heard an unfamiliar street name.My idea may be good, but this map is terrible.At best, it shows Central Austin, but calling it an Austin map is wrong.If you know anything about Austin, consider this: It shows nothing north of 45th street and Camp Mabry.On the east side it stops around Pleasant Valley and Berkman.Going south, it stops at Zilker Park.(Almost nothing south of the river is shown.)Going west, it does show Rollingwood and Westlake Hills.The downtown detail map on the back is o.k., but it's already out of date.The "Area Map" on the back only goes to Pflugerville (north), Decker Lake but not Manor (east), the airport (south), and Sunset Valley (west).Don't buy this map!It's worse than the freebies from the hotel or a car rental agency or inside the phone book.

A lifesaver
I moved to the Austin area nearly three years ago and this is the map I came back to over and over again, and I bought a lot of them when we first moved here.It's not detailed enough to help you pinpoint a specific, minor street, but it's great in understanding the overall layout of Austin and the surrounding towns.It can get you downtown from anywhere, it can help you figure ou how to get out of downtown and how to figure out other options when there's a slow-down on the road you're on.I love that it's laminated -- it still looks new after nearly three years. My husband and I fight over which car it gets to live in.Now that we've lived here awhile, it doesn't get used quite as much, but it was INVALUABLE in helping me figure out Austin!I highly recommend it.

I Prefer the Hotel Map

DALLAS
These guides are highly functional, but they are limited to certain area's of the city.In the case of dallas, the map focuses heavily on north dallas, which of course is where most everything is, but if you are looking for something in east dallas or south dallas, or even far north dallas then you won't find it on this map.If however you are looking for something in downtown, or highland park or preston hollow then ur in luck, personally i love these maps and since the part of dallas i travel in is covered on this map, i use it all the time..use your judgement on what you need a map of dallas for, before making a purchase.FYI, these maps are very well constructed and the font is easy to read.

EASY BUT LIMITED
These 3 panel laminated maps by Streetwise are very handy for your vehicle for those times when you want to take a quick glance at a map and either cannot or do not want to fumble with the traditional unfolding maps or thumb through a map book looking for your desired location.However, due to it's compact size, this map is only detailed in the immediate downtown area.The remainder of the map shows major highways in the metropolitan area.So it's great to use to map out highway to highway but not good for use on your pizza delivery job. ... When are the Interstates considered Backroads in Texas?
This book was VERY dissapointing.When I began noticing that the Interstates are included in many of the routes, I quit looking at it.All of the photos are small and in black and white -- many appear old.The route maps are a joke.I wish I could send it back and get my money refunded.The title is VERY misleading.Jon Black

Nothing Backroads or Unique
A wate of money. This is list main highway routes. A lot less information than what one can find in a AAA Book. No restaurants and no places to stay even listed. Looks like the authoir never visited any of these places. He certainly brings nothning unique to this book.

Quick, Easy and Reliable
As stated in the description, the book was in very good condition, looked unused except a couple of pen marks. Delivery was quick. Would definitely used this vendor again.

The Map As Cultural Icon
While this is not a book for everyone, those interested in either maps or popular iconography will find few if any its equal.It will appeal primarily to three groups of readers.The first is persons interested inmaps and cartography, especially the role of the map in present day popularculture. The second group consists of Texans andothers interested inTexana. The third are persons interested in the visual arts.(I belong tothe first two of these.)

Richard Francaviglia is an associate professorof history and the director of the Center for Greater Southwestern Studiesand the History of Cartography at the University of Texas at Arlington.Heis a talented writer, skilled at presenting abstract subjects so that theyare accessible to both his intellectual colleagues and to the intelligencelay reader.This book is evidence of that skill.

As a northernertransplanted to Texas, Francaviglia has been struck by the overwhelmingpresence of the outline map of the state of Texas in advertising, companylogos, road signs, and other manifestations.As he notes in hisintroduction, "if Texas were a tribe located in an exotic part of theworld, anthropologists probably would have seriously studied their peculiaruse of the map by now.But as of this writing, no one else has describedthe phenomenon in this book."

This is not an understatement.Ifthe reader doubts it when opening the book, he/she will not doubt it by theend.Francaviglia traces the rise of the use of the outline map in the20th century and its supplanting of the Lone Star as the most common Texasicon.He catalogues the use of the outline map in ways which span thegamut from the mundane to the bizarre.He does not, however, treat this asa source of humor (though many things are very funny), but rather assomething deeply revealing about Texas regional culture andcharacter.

The book is well illustrated with 27 color plates and over 100black and white photos and drawings.It is a tribute to Dr. Francaviglia'sinterests in the topic that he obtained financing from the SummerleeFoundation of Dallas to enable the inclusion of the color plates whichwould not normally be possible in a book of this price and specializedinterest.

If you have an academic interest in any of the topics I haveaddressed, this book is a must.If you are a Texan, this book is a hoot. If you are both, read and enjoy.You are guaranteed to both learn andlaugh out loud. ... Read more

Not as good and I hoped
This map was not easy to read, and not as clear to give me good directions.It is laminated, so it is not easily soiled or torn, but that is about the best part of it.

Streetwise San Antonio Map review
This map is very helpful for navigating the streets in the heart of downtown San Antonio-- especially for walkers. But if you're driving downtown and you're not familiar with the layout of the streets, then good luck, because there's not much sense to how all those little one-way streets are laid out, and even a detailed map won't help enough. However, the downtown area should really be explored on foot rather than by car. Just find an inexpensive parking lot to leave the car, and take your Streetwise map with you.

If you are driving beyond the downtown area, this map does not provide enough detail, so I'd recommend that you bring another map for that purpose. We brought a map from AAA, and we did fine using both the Streetwise map and the AAA map.

San Antonio
Found this map to very helpful and indestructible.A very nice resource to have on hand, easy to use and accurate for walking and driving.

Too Isolated
I loved the plastic and the clear, colored markings tha show up real good, but was deeply disappointed that it did NOT show the entire city of San Antonio, as billed. It centered rght on the central part of SA and the Alamo, but when you want to use i to get to OTHER places aside downtown---forget it, it becomes a topography map not a road map and is very disappointing.

A great way to see a city!
Bottom line, this series of maps is the best way to see a city. Because they are coated in plastic and fold, they stand up well to being stuffed in a backpack or handbag, and they are clear and easy to use. I've used the San Francisco, Manhattan, London, and Florence maps, and they are really marvelous. And now I'm going to San Antonio!

One of the things I like best about them is that they clearly highlight museums, parks, and other tourist spots so that they are easy to find. The only drawback is that some of the text is mighty small, which can be a problem in low light if your eyes are over 40 like mine are. They are smaller than big fold-out paper maps, which is an advantage if, for safety reasons, you don't want to make it obvious that you are studying a map, advertising that you are a visitor. ... This Texas map is a reproduction of the superb 1860 S. A. Mitchell County Map of Texas from an original in the Electric Books collection. It is thought to be one of the best Texas and Southwestern maps ever published for the period just prior to the Civil War . In this period Texas was in rapid development, trying to get railroad lines to the major cities and shipping points. The slavery issue and secession was in the background but getting new settlers into the states and creating an economy were on the minds of most. The large cattle drives to the north had not started at this point. The hand applied colors on the original in our collection, from which this reproduction was made, are subtle but effective and avoid the checkerboard look of so many other Texas maps of this period. Still shows and lists Astroworld, closed half a decade ago
So I was new to Houston and bought this map (2008 edition) to get around. I saw this place called Astroworld and Water World, so I drove with my kids to that place. Lo and behold, there was no theme park, just a big lot of grass! This is an unforgivable error -- and the park, closed in 2005 according to wikipedia, is also listed as a point of interest on this map.

Houston Map
This is a very useful map.It is pocket size so you can put it in your pocket or in your purse for easy access.I think this map is so easy to read and shows all the roads and the popular buildings for tourist to visit.I am glad I bought this map.Streetwise maps do an excellent job with getting you around the city.

HOUSTON..WELL CENTRAL HOUSTON ANYWAY
I really like these simple easy to use maps.They are well put together and highly functional.I am very familiar with Houston, but i still carry this map, because sometimes frankly you just what to be sure where something is located.The only draw back to these streetwise maps is that they only highly light the central city, which is fine if that's the only place you'll be driving, but if you need a map of the entire city then this may not be your best bet, but they are great for the most traveled areas of town.Overall, I am a huge fan of these maps. ... This is one of the few Texas maps that shows Wigefarth County in the lower Panhandle next to Indian Territory. This Texas county was in existence for only a short time. I have never seen it on any other major Texas County Map.All The Early Post Civil War Frontier Forts, Trails & Places in Texas & Indian TerritoryWarner & Beers maps are known for their great beauty and their accuracy. The national Atlas of the United States that this map was published for was copyrighted in 1872 and this edition was published in 1876. In this transitional period, the railroads had only reached as far west as Dallas & Austin. There are a number of projected but never built fantasy railroads also shown. In addition this map has very good detail as to the existing roads and trails. Shown are the major Indian war trails, the military roads still connecting all the frontier forts and many now-forgotten place names.. This is one of the few major post-Civil War maps that shows the entire state of Texas without chopping off either the Panhandle or the western sections which adds greatly to the visual appeal. In addition, a very large part of Indian Territory and New Mexico is shown in full color and detail. The map features and intricate border coupled with effective but subtle hand wash coloring.
