Excerpt: University of Tennessee -On September 10, 1794, two years before Tennessee became a state and at a meeting of the legislature of the Southwest Territory at Knoxville, the University of Tennessee was chartered as Blount College. The new, all-male, non-sectarian institution struggled for 13 years with a small student body and faculty, and in 1807, the school was renamed East Tennessee College. When its first president and only faculty member died in 1809, the school was temporarily closed until 1820, and in 1840 was elevated to East Tennessee University. The school's status as a religiously non-affiliated institution of higher learning was unusual for the period of time in which it was chartered, and the school is generally recognized as the oldest such establishment of its kind west of the Appalachian Divide. Admitted to the Union on June 1, 1796, as the 16th state, Tennessee was the last to secede. In answer to Lincoln's call for two regiments for immediate service, Governor Isham Greene Harris had responded that the state wouldn't furnish a single man for purposes of coercion, "but 50,000, if necessary, for the defense of our rights and those of our Southern brothers." Although Eastern Tennessee had many Unionists, a special session of the legislature drew up a declaration of independence which was approved in an election on June 8, 1861, thereby making the state a part of the Confederacy although the word secession wasn't used. Many of the major engagements of the war in the West were fought within the state, among them Fort Donelson, Shiloh or Pittsburgh Landing, Chattanooga, Stones River, Franklin, and Nashville. Tennessee sent 186,652 men to the Confederacy while 31,092 went to the Union. Forrest's cavalry corps, surrendered as part of General Richard Taylor's command on May 9, 1865. It was the last Confederate unit to surrender east of the Mississippi. After Union successes had established military control in the western part of the state, Andrew Johnson served as a military governor. He was inaugurated as President of the United States on April 15, 1865. In June, 1865, he declared the rebellion in Tennessee ended, but a congressional group opposed efforts to readmit the state. After stormy debate, on 24 July 1866, Tennessee, last to secede, was the first to be re-admitted to the Union. Tennessee contains approximately 2,900 recorded sites from The War Between the States. One thousand of these locations are locations of military actions of varying sizes. Today, commercial and residential development threatens the conservation of these sites. In 1864, the Confederate States of America was in a precarious situation. It had been split down the middle when the Union forces gained control of the Mississippi River. To add to the problems of the Confederate government, the individual states, especially those that were threatened within vasion by the northern forces, were determined to maintain a rather large home militia to be used only in the event their states were invaded. The Army of Tennessee had operated under a defensive strategy for some time since the Battle of Perryville, falling back to the next most strategic position, hoping to draw the Union forces into an unfavorable situation. Politicking in and out of the army, John B. It may be fairly claimed that the success of General Sherman's famous March to the Sea hung on the issue of a minor battle fought at Spring Hill, in Middle Tennessee, the evening of November 29th, 1864, when Sherman and his army were hundreds of miles away in the heart of Georgia. It will be remembered that when Sherman started from Atlanta for Savannah his old antagonist, General Hood, was at Florence, Alabama, refitting his army to the limit of the waning resources of the Confederacy, for an aggressive campaign into Tennessee. If Hood's campaign had proved successful Sherman's unopposed march through Georgia would have been derided as a crazy freak, and, no doubt, the old charge of insanity would have been revived against him. By how narrow a margin Hood missed a brilliant success, a truthful account of the Spring Hill affair will disclose. Much has been written by interested generals of both sides, and by their partisan friends, to mislead as to the real situation. With no personal friendships or enmities to subserve, it is the intention of this paper to tell the truth without any regard to its effect on the reputation of any general, Federal or Confederate.
