Product Description
Taking the soap opera as a case study, this book explores the "parasocial interaction" people engage in with television programs. It looks at the nature of the "active viewer" and the role of the text in social psychology. It also investigates the existing theoretical models offered by social psychology and other discourses. This second edition takes into account recent research work and theoretical developments in fields such as narrative psychology, social representation theory and ethnographic work on audiences, and looks at the developing role of audience research. ... Product Description

This is the first oral history of early television by those who made it happen. Reminiscences of the stars, the writers, the producers create a feeling of being there when television first came into America's homes.

Ed McMahon has known most of the entertainment icons of the last 50 years. He started his television career in Philadelphia and moved to New York in 1958 to appear on Who Do You Trust with Johnny Carson. Ed has interviewed writers, producers, cameramen and stars such as Annette Funicello, Dick Clark, Andy Griffith, Art Linkletter, Gale Storm, Barbara Billingsley, Walter Cronkite, Jerry Mathers, Soupy Sales, Ron Howard, Merv Griffin and more to provide not just a history of early television, but a history told by those who made it happen.

5-0 out of 5 stars He-e-e-e-e-ere's Ed!
As anyone who's ever watched "The Tonight Show" knows, you couldn't find a better MC than Ed McMahon. At first glance, this appears to be his memoirs, something every TV personality writes. But it's so much more. At just over 300 pages, drenched in black and white photos, with memorable pull quotes and cut lines on every page, it's merely the liveliest, most informative and entertaining history of the early days of television out there. Much of that credit must go to co-author David Fisher, who also co-authored George Burns' lilting tribute to his wife and partner, Gracie Allen, Gracie. a Love Story.

Everyone is in here, from Lucille Ball to Milton Berle; Steve Allen to "The Goldbergs"; "Sgt. Bilko" to Fulton Sheen. And, of course, Johnny Carson. Ed not only captures the heady days when TV was newborn, confined to New York, Philadelphia, and Chicago; broadcast to a few hundred, and then a few thousand homes from the basement of a department store or an unused theatre; when the test pattern gave way to a few hours a day of black and white programs. He also alludes to the early discoveries and continuing advances in TV technology in equally entertaining anecdotes with the "you are there" perspective of an early pioneer who was born with, and grew up with the medium.

Many will remember these shows and performers in this trip down memory lane. But you could have no prior knowledge of anything in this book, and still learn a great deal in this enjoyable read. While Ed gives a long and intriguing rundown of TV talk shows, the sort of show he knows best, he also hits all the other bases, from kids' TV to cop shows, to news and sports, game shows, sitcoms and soap operas. Being very interested in TV history, I've read dozens of books on the topic, but still found myself learning new facts and stories on nearly every page.

Now that television is old, it's lost a lot of its early spontaneity, and certainly its innocence. Reading how it came about, what it once was, and what people once put into making it the best it could be, makes one hope that television can once again be rescued, and its lost innocence restored. If it can, it will be in no small part to Ed McMahon and David Fisher, who here recall the daring and passion, the verve and vigor when television was young.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent history of television
In writing this review, I need to share a bit about myself. I was born in 1947 in Austria, then raised in Germany, and came to the United States in 1965 with my parents and my brother. My mother and my brother did not speak English very well, so a friend of ours brought us a TV set so that they could learn it. I did not watch too much TV until 1967 when I started to watch the CBS Evening News every day upon return home. My mother enjoyed CONCENTRATION and TO TELL THE TRUTH. My father's favorites were GUNSMOKE and PERRY MASON. I myself enjoyed ANDY GRIFFITH and GOMER PYLE, U. S. M. C.; I still fondly remember these. Ed McMahon's description of TV starts with it during and after World War II, and for me, that was a learning experience. He accurately describes the functions of Walter Cronkite as CBS anchorman and Chet Huntley and David Brinkley as NBC anchors; I still remember these shows. He does not, however, mention news shows such as MEET THE PRESS (NBC), FACE THE NATION (CBS), and ISSUES AND ANSWERS (ABC), and this is a major omission in his otherwise excellent book. He mentions several other shows, but makes no mention of ANDY GRIFFITH or GOMER PYLE, U. S. M. C., either. But this is his way of doing things, and I realize that he had a volume of shows to cover, such as I LOVE LUCY, THE PRICE IS RIGHT, HAWAII-FIVE-O (which I enjoyed, too), and others. Of course, he mentions his role in THE TONIGHT SHOW, in which he aided Johnny Carson. From time to time, he hosted CONCENTRATION; he does not mention that in his book, but I remember him doing so. Another thing he mentions is the long-time role of Bob Barker as host of THE PRICE IS RIGHT; Bob Barker only recently retired from that show, and was replaced by Drew Carey, whom McMahon also mentions. But in summary, this is an excellent recap of television in its youth, and I enjoyed reading it. And I realize that McMahon had his way of selecting the shows to mention, and do not criticize him for not mentioning my favorites. I am sure there are many other readers who also have favorite TV shows from the past.

Product Description
A pioneering study at the intersection of religion and media, Small Screen, Big Picture treats television as a virtual meeting place where Americans across racial, ethnic, economic and religious lines find instructive and inspirational narratives. An interdisciplinary tour de force, this book describes how television converts social concerns, cultural conundrums and metaphysical questions into stories that explore and even shape who we are and would like to be--the building blocks of religious speculation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book Guaranteed to Spark Spiritual (and Spirited!) Discussions about TV
Diane Winston's new book, "Small Screen BIG PICTURE," was produced by a group of scholars as a challenging "reader" for college students. Over the years, Baylor University Press has produced a number of great choices like this that explore spirituality and popular culture--and this is a truly BIG book, weighing in at more than 500 pages.

I'm writing this review not for college students or teachers who already are hearing about this book if they are interested in these issues. (Diane managed to pull together a number of leading lights in this field of research to write the book's various sections.)

I'm writing for the hundreds of thousands of readers out there who coordinate small discussion groups, preach to congregations or teach in secular small-group settings. This is a challenging, provocative look at the spiritual themes in a remarkable set of TV dramas--the blossoming of major dramas in the first decade of the Third Millennium (and the decade shaped by 9/11). In this book, you'll read a lot about "Battlestar Galactica," "Deadwood," "The Wire," "The West Wing," "Everwood," "The O.C.," "Sleeper Cell," "Heroes," "Lost," "Prison Break," "Saving Grace" and "Sopranos."

To use this book in a small group, leaders should get copies and pick out series they want to explore--then consider the cutting-edge reflections shared by these authors. That's potent fuel to spark a discussion.

Diane herself in an interview about the book, says this: "To me, the most basic spiritual questions are: What am I doing here? How can I make a difference? And, what happens when I die? Those three questions are a great starting point for getting a discussion going in your small group about Battlestar Galactica or Sopranos or many of these other series."

I agree entirely. ... Read more

Product Description
Talk on Television examines the value and significance of televised public debate, at a time when everyday conversation is increasingly dependent on television. At the same time, more people are are making appearances on these shows to discuss their personal lives and social issues.

Analyzing a wide range of programs including Donohue and Oprah Winfrey, the authors draw on interviews with both studio participants and home viewers. Their work, the first audience study of this type of programming, addresses not only a growing genre of media previously ignored, but also points towards contemporary debates in social theory. Livingstone and Lunt ask how the media manages these discussion programs, and whether they are truly providing new "spaces" for the participants. They learn how audiences interpret seeing themselves on the shows, analyze the contribution made by "experts", and unravel the conventions--debate, romance and therapy--that make up the genres. Through this, they consider television's function as a medium of education and information, finally discussing the dangers and opportunities the genre holds for both audience participation and public debate in the future.

Talk on Television asks questions and presents evidence regarding the active audience, public participation, the significance of public discourse, and the role of the mass-media in the public sphere. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Textbook
One of the things that stood out for me in this book is that Stuart Hyde continues to remind students of broadcasting of the ethical responsibilities they possess. This book presents a holistic picture of the industry. It is up to date on the latest technological innovations, while retaining pertinent advice that is valid for any time or place. Being a practical book, it contains a wide variety of vocal exercises in various contexts. The sidebars featuring working professionals extends the scope of the discussion. Professor Hyde is straightforward in telling students they should be prepared to pay their dues by working their way up from the bottom of the profession. The first two chapters discuss announcing in general terms. Chapters 3-5 address voice development and improvement. In chapter 6 video performance is covered. Other sections of the book deal with commercial and PSA announcing, interviewing, news, music annoucning, and sports. The concluding chapter is particularly helpful to students in that it tells them how to prepare a resume and market themselves for their initial job in broadcasting. This is a great textbook for students interested in entering a very competitive field. It gives them the facts and helps them prepare themselves in a realistic manner for what they will face. ... International Satellite Broadcasting in South Asia focuses on the increase in the popularity of television in India beginning with the entrance of Hong Kong Based STAR-TV in 1991. This television system, which initially carried mostly Western programs, radically changed the nature of entertainment communications in countries where communications were generally state-controlled. These essays address the political, economic, and cultural significance and impact of transnational satellite networks in India, questioning the cultural effects of Western media programs on the recipient non-Western countries. They contain a survey of STAR-TV and the state-controlled Doordarshan as well as explore issues such as media and identity, pro-social entertainment television and culture as a market force. ... This book offers an interpretation of the myths that shape television images and reinforce this culture's dominant ideology. It provides histories of all television genres and connects developments within each genre to political, social, and cultural shifts in the larger society. This new Second Edition updates the previous edition's close textual analysis of representative series and serials to mid-1993, reflecting the significant changes that have occurred in both the business of television in the United States and in the larger society's dominant ideology. The Second Edition also reflects significant advances in critical theory related to the study of television that have occurred over the past decade, and it incorporates both the structuralist critical position (dominant in the first edition) and a post-structuralist position which moves away from a determinist textual analysis of ideology to a consideration of possible multiple decodings. ... I have read this and other books by Mr. himmelstein and they ahve enforced my belief that the college textbook industry produces

Product Description
This volume examines the analysis that was designed to map the development of the television family and assess its current state and, at the same time, to provide insight into the tangled relationships between fictional and real family life. In order to do this, the investigation examines the evolution of the American family, paying special attention to the postwar family, which is not only used recurrently as a benchmark for assessing the performance of modern families but also constituted television's first generation of families. The investigation also traces the evolution of the popular family in vaudeville, comics, and radio. However, the primary focus of the examination is the development of the television family, from families, such as the Nelsons, Andersons, and Cleavers, to more contemporary families, such as the Huxtables, Conners, and Taylors.

The unit of analysis for the investigation is the relationship rather than the individual. Hence, the book deals with the portrayal of spousal, parent-child, and sibling relationships and how those portrayals differ across time and across groups defined by ethnicity, gender, and age. Moreover, the relational analysis is expansive so that television family relationships are examined in regard to power and affect, performance, and satisfaction and stability.

Television Families provides a thorough summary and critical review of extant research, designed to promote informed classroom discussion. At the same time, it advances a number of hypotheses and recommendations and, as such, is intended to influence subsequent theory and research in the area. The book is intended for senior undergraduate students, graduate students, and television and family researchers.

The subject of competition between religion and television has, if only indirectly, received considerable attention, particularly from religionists disturbed by the threat posed by television programming to traditional religious beliefs, values, and attitudes. This detailed study considers the competing cultural forces of television and religion from a wider and more theoretical perspective. Newman examines the major forms of competition and the various motives and strategies of the people and groups involved. His philosophical approach allows us to see that the most important aspect of competition between television and religion is their rivalry as cultural forces. In this rivalry, religion continues to have a profound influence on the shaping of television, just as it has always had on all newly developing forms of culture. ... Read more

Product Description
Democracy in the twentieth century is intimately linked to the mass media. Understanding the functioning and health of contemporary political systems requires an appreciation of the role of the media in general, and of the most influential of the mass media in particular: television.

In this broad-ranging text, Peter Dahlgren both clarifies the underlying theoretical concepts of civil society and the public sphere, and relates these to a critical analysis of the practice of television as journalism, as information and as entertainment. He demonstrates the limits and the possibilities of the television medium and the formats of popular journalism. These questions are linked to the potential of the audience to interpret or resist messages, and to construct its own meanings. What does a realistic understanding of the working capabilities of television imply for citizenship and democracy in a mediated age?

Relating the social and cultural theory of mediated societies to the actual realities of televised communication, this book will be essential reading for scholars and students of media and communication studies, sociology and politics of the media.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book - great service from distributor
Michael Shamberg's book made a big impression on me 35 years ago when I first read it. Although there has been a dramatic change in video technology, the message of this book is just as valid. "Don't worry if you're doing it according to the high priests rules. Just get out there and shoot some video!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Ahead Of His Time
In 1973 I purchased a thin softcover copy of Michael Shamberg's "Guerrilla Television", a _different and exciting_ book. One half of the book is a serious technology assessment of early 1970's Portapak technology (a portable video camera combined with a separate portable video tape recorder). The other half of the book discusses how Portapaks can be used in guerrilla (informal street) theatre. The book's theme is 'Portapak technology is a powerful, enabling and fun technology with a future'.Subsequent Portapak development and miniaturization have proven Michael Shamberg correct.

The guerrilla theatre discussion is unique for 1973.Video frames, photographs and line drawings are sprinkled throughout the text -- common in today's multimedia presentations.IMO the discussion's tone resembles the writings of Abbie Hoffman.

A copy of Michael Shamberg's University transcript is included within "Guerrilla Television".Michael Shamberg attended the same University that I attended before my arrival (presumably at the same time that Harold Ramis attended my University).I have heard that Michael Shamberg later became a Hollywood producer. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating subject receives a debilitating treatment
Simply put, Mr. Smith's writing gets in the way of the subject about which he writes. This is a great 400-page book.Unfortunately, it's 623 pages long.Mr. Smith never takes one word if he can say it in ten. Were he one of the broadcasters about whom he writes, he would be described as "being in love with the sound of his own voice."

And it's such a shame, because this is a worthwhile topic.I climbed into the book hoping for a great deal, but what I got was a great deal less than that.Wordiness killed this book.

Smith might say that "One man's wordiness is another man's poetry," but I would say the man for whom wordiness is "poetry" is not yet fit to write.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic.
Simply put, this is THE definitive history of baseball announcing, with biographies of the individual broadcasters themselves interspersed with more big-picture observations concerning baseball and broadcasting ingeneral. The book was clearly a labor of love for its author, a fact whichshould make his occasional forays into self-indulgence forgivable. Smithhas a decided bias toward the late '50s and early '60s, the era of his ownchildhood; as the reviewer from Ohio noted, he makes too many criticalcomparisons between the different "Voices" (although THISreviewer misses Harry Caray tremendously and considers Jon Miller one ofthe all-time greats); and he peppers the text with comments derived fromhis conservative political leanings. Nonetheless, the anecdotes arefascinating and the sheer scope of the work is most impressive. All that'sneeded now is a third edition to touch on the entry of Fox into the networklandscape and other developments of the last decade.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview Of A Fascinating Topic
Curt Smith's history of baseball broadcasting on both radio and television from 1921 to 1991 is a must-have for any baseball library and a fun overview of an oft-neglected topic. Many wonderful insights are revealedfor the first time about local and network broadcasters, their comings andgoings and their impact on the game itself.About the only drawback ofthis book and which keeps it from five stars is Smith's annoying habit ofdigressing into his personal opinions about various broadcasters, past andpresent. While this isn't too intrusive for announcers he praises, I forone was offended by his rude treatment of an announcer I grew up with as aYankees fan in the late 1970s and who was my "Voice Of Summer" assurely as Mel Allen was to an earlier generation, in my case Frank Messerof the wonderful Yankees broadcast team of Phil Rizzuto, Messer and BillWhite.Ditto his obnoxious diss at Gary Thorne of the New York Mets andESPN who only happens to be one of the top all-around play-by-play men inthe business today.Such comments are better suited to a media critic inthe newspapers and not to a historical overview and in my opinion keep thebook from being a flawless gem.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Reference Source
Curt Smith's history of baseball broadcasting, from the early days ofradio in the 1920s to the present is a must read for those who have alwaysbeen fascinated by the men who have broadcast the games over the years andwant to know just why baseball has sadly declined in importance on thenetworks over the decades. It is shocking to see how in the 1950s, therewere more than 100 regular season baseball games each year on all threenetworks, while today we barely see a quarter of that amount.

The onlything wrong with Smith's book that keeps it from five stars are hisannoying digressions into his personal opinions of certain broadcasters. As a Yankee fan who grew up in the late 1970s, I particularly take offenseto his rude dismissal of Frank Messer, who broadcast more Yankee games thananyone other than Mel Allen or Phil Rizzuto as well as his total glossingover of Bill White, also a Yankee broadcaster at the time and the firstblack to broadcast regularly for a team.Jon Miller and Harry Caray, twoannouncers I dislike are overhyped as though they were gods while GaryThorne, a solid professional for more than a decade on ESPN and the NewYork Mets is also treated rudely.Smith would have been well-advised tostick to the history and keep his opinions on announcers he doesn't carefor to himself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written, informative and fun
Curt Smith is one of the most eloquent writers around today. This chronicle of the great voices who have brought the game of baseball into our homes is an absolute treasure. From Graham McNamee to Ty Tyson up to Mel Allen and Jack Buck, all of the great baseball voices are brought back to life.Curt Smith does a masterful job bringing to life these men who had the rare talent of entertaining us with descriptions of a baseball game. ... Product Description
After decades of distorted stereotyping by the media, Canada's First Peoples began to take control of their own image by creating a broadcast industry to transmit their own representations and perspectives. "Something New in the Air" charts the development of indigenous television broadcasting within the wider context of Canadian contemporary, multicultural society from the 1960s to the present. Lorna Roth focuses on the regional, national, and global implications of Television Northern Canada and the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN), the only dedicated aboriginal television service in the world available to every household in Canada with cable and satellite. She shows that by making their programming an integral part of the Canadian broadcasting infrastructure, First Peoples have succeeded in mediating their own historically-ruptured pasts and creating a provocative model for media resistance. Concentrating on policy development, Roth explains how First Peoples in Canada have refashioned television broadcasting, indigenizing, and transforming it into a tool for inter-community and national development."Something New in the Air" valorises the struggle of First Peoples to attain legislated recognition of their collective communications and cultural rights, and shows how this struggle explains, in part, why they are now acknowledged as having the most advanced aboriginal broadcasting network in the world. ... Product Description
This econometric study covers the latent demand outlook for television broadcasting across the prefectures and cities of Japan. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,000 cities in Japan. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it's prefecture and of Japan is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-a-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each prefecture and city, latent demand estimates are created for television broadcasting. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the cities in Japan). This study gives, however, my estimates for the latent demand, or the P.I.E., for television broadcasting in Japan. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided and concentrated across the cities and regional markets of Japan. For each prefecture, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time. In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on strategic planning at graduate schools of business. ... Read more
