Praise for the Third Edition:

Writing up Qualitative Research has CHIME – compassion, humor, intelligence, mindfulness of humanity, and empirical evidence. Wolcott’s empathic compassion is a major strength. The content of every chapter shows that Wolcott has fel and grappled with all the same anxieties and fears of writers at every level.”
-Sonja Peterson-Lewis, Temple University

“His style is good, down to earth, and easy to understand for both undergraduate and graduate.”
-Joseph Wronka, Springfield College

“The Wolcott text is much more reader-friendly and writer-friendly. It offer remarkable support for the writing process, compared to traditional texts.”
-Judy K. C. Bentley, SUNY at Cortland

“The conversational style makes the book inviting and accessible. It is comprehensive, addressing the various aspects of writing ranging from setting up to where to write to get published. It teaches and motivates with being didactic or arrogant.”

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent source of adavice, but not entirely on target
This book does a great job of offering a review of the process by which qualitative research is turned into a product. For example, it does a great job of stressing some of the key difficulties in this process, and how to overcome them. The book, however, then offers some advice that is beyond just writing qualitative research, but is applicable to any type of writing. This causes the book to ramble just a bit. So for all that advice, you are treat to some waste of space. Any way, this book is a so-so reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great read!
I ordered this book for my master's research and I loved the fact that the author can be funny about a topic that is not easy to write about.Rather than reading like a textbook, this book offered insightful and fun ideas for writing a professional paper. At first, I was not happy about the price for a small paperback book, but it was well worth it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Get something else
I am writing a dissertation and this was not very helpful. It basically said get started, get going, keep going a nd told me all the reasons that I did not need to justify using qualitative research. It was a waste of money unless you needed a pep talk. Was of no use from a technical standpoint.

5-0 out of 5 stars Got me through my dissertation...
I found this book more helpful than any dissertation-writing manual, and will rely on it for future projects beyond the PhD.Wolcott's honest and funny writing style makes you feel like a friend, and his advice is truly useful. The book is a great motivator as well, particularly during those frustrating stages of writing/revising.I highly recommend this book to anyone sitting on a mound of qualitative data who needs a bit of companionship along the way.

This book has been very helpful in determining where to start and steps to make for completing a qualitative research project. It offers suggestions of "how to" and provides application tips that make a sometimes seemingly overwhelming project manageable. ... Read more

Product Description
The subject of mathematical writing has been infused with life once again by Nick Higham as he follows up his successful HWMS volume with this much-anticipated second edition. As is Higham's style, the material is enlivened by anecdotes, unusual paper titles, and humorous quotations. This handy new volume provides even more information on the issues you will face when writing a technical paper or talk, from choosing the right journal in which to publish to handling your references. Its overview of the entire publication process is invaluable for anyone hoping to publish in a technical journal.

The original book has been completely revised, making use of feedback from readers as well as Higham's own large file of ideas based on his experiences in reading, writing, editing, examining, and supervising theses.

The most obvious changes to this second edition are the new chapters: "Writing and Defending a Thesis," "Giving a Talk" (which adds to the existing material on preparing slides for a talk), "Preparing a Poster," and "TeX and LaTeX" (including tips on their use for typesetting mathematics and detailed discussions of BibTeX and indexing). Numerous mathematical symbols in the AMS fonts have been added to Appendix B.

Among the new material in existing chapters, the section "How to Referee" in the chapter "Publishing a Paper" offers advice on this important aspect of the publication process. The chapter "Writing a Paper" suggests formats for referencing items on the World Wide Web.

The renamed chapter "Aids and Resources for Writing and Research" contains a new section, "Library Classification Schemes," which will help readers find their way around libraries. This chapter's material on the Internet was completely rewritten in light of the World Wide Web.

Separate author and subject indexes are now provided; the bibliography has been updated to include many new editions of books, and more than 70 new references have been added. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Writing Mathematics

The Handbook of Writing for the Mathematical Sciences offers a comprehensive, precise presentation of the significant areas a mathemetician or technical editor of mathematical papers must deal with from the use of dictionaries and thesaursus, through what makes for excellent mathematical writing, style, making presentations, publishing, and much more. 4-0 out of 5 stars A practical, accessible guide to a vital career skill: effective business writing
Some people believe good writing involves big words, long sentences and complicated concepts. Nothing could be further from the truth, explain Natalie Canavor and Claire Meirowitz, co-owners of a business writing consultancy and co-authors of this handy guide. That's why they spell out the tenets of effective business writing in 52 simple "truths," covering virtually every type of business communication, from emails, letters and reports to websites and blogs. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good advice that is too often violated
The author provides what some would call very basic advice on good writing.Truth is that many people ignore this advice (and are less persuasive/effective as a result), or don't know it in the first place.A good basic guide for anyone who is seeking to improve their writing skills or coach others.

2-0 out of 5 stars Writing for reduced attention spans....
The new rules for business writing can be summed up as "write at a 5th grade level".That is my summary, not the summary of this book.

It seems that in this fast paced world, no one takes the time to really READ any more.Writing in business is necessarily short and to the point. This book gives guidelines for this sort of writing. What I was looking for was something with more substance to it.Sometimes writing short sentences using simple words just doesn't get the point across adequately.

This book delivers what it promises, which are the rules for writing memos and web pages that get a point across quickly before the reader is off onto something else.sorry, but I just object to this sort of writing.

I was hoping for something that would help with writing clearly, but this is just a collection of quick ideas that would be useful for short attention spans. What other reviewers liked about this book is exactly what I did not like.

5-0 out of 5 stars If everyone read this book, it would make the workplace so much better!
If everyone followed the business writing tips from this book, the workplace would be a much more efficient place. I cannot tell you how many times a day I have to deal with extremely verbose emails or documents. This book shows you examples and also the thought process for making your writing more concise and to the point. One of the biggest tips that is pretty much common sense but no one does is taking the time to read over their writing just once before sending. This book covers not only business writing for emails and summary reports but also writing for webpages and blogs. I found the writing tips for webpages to be extremely helpful and will be revamping my homepage to incorporate some of their ideas. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that communicates with others in a written form. ... Read more

Product Description
This detailed, example-driven guide illustrates how much you can do to make written texts more suitable for a global audience. Accompanied by an abundance of clearly explained examples, the Global English guidelines show you how to write documentation that is optimized for non-native speakers of English, translators, and even machine-translation software, as well as for native speakers of English. You'll find dozens of guidelines that you won't find in any other source, along with thorough explanations of why each guideline is useful. The author also includes revision strategies, as well as caveats that will help you avoid applying guidelines incorrectly.

Focusing primarily on sentence-level stylistic issues, problematic grammatical constructions, and terminology issues, this book addresses the following topics: ways to simplify your writing style and make it consistent; ambiguities that most writers and editors are not aware of, and how to eliminate those ambiguities; how to make your sentence structure more explicit so that your sentences are easier for native and non-native speakers to read and understand; punctuation and capitalization guidelines that improve readability and make translation more efficient; and howlanguage technologies such as controlled-authoring software can facilitate the adoption of Global English as a corporate standard.

This text is intended for anyone who uses written English to communicate technical information to a global audience. Technical writers, technical editors, science writers, and training instructors are just a few of the professions for which this book is essential reading. Even if producing technical information is not your primary job function, the Global English guidelines can help you communicate more effectively with colleagues around the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great tips for writing for a global market
I taught English in Japan before becoming a medical translator and now a consultant for Japanese Pharma companies. This book is truly useful in helping my clients prepare regulatory documents for international submission. The principles help them write with confidence in English (and to write English that requires less 'fixing"!)

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not get Kindle version for iPad
I bought the Kindle version of this excellent book to read on my iPad. Unfortunately, the formatting is really messed up and it is almost unreadable. Even worse, there is no linked index, no linked table of contents, and no search, all of which would make the book a useful reference. Without being able to quickly find the information one needs, this book has absolutely no value as a reference.
Profoundly disappointed...

4-0 out of 5 stars The Global English Style Guide
I have been a technical writer for more than 40 years. Over that time I have developed a style of effective communication that is understood by technical English users at all levels. This book comes closest to documenting that style. Although tuned to writers who prepare material to be translated, it is effective when communicating technical concepts, processes, and procedures.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Global English Style Guide: a review
Many people who do not speak English as a first language struggle to understand English texts. Human translation is expensive. Machine translation frequently does not work. Global English offers a solution to these three related problems.

Many good style guides exist. Why do technical writers need another style guide? Unlike other style guides, this book covers grammatical structures, not only particular terms. The author writes clearly, and he explains the reasons for the guidelines. The book is not an academic paper. The guidelines are based on practical work at SAS Institute, where the author works.

Most technical writers know some of the guidelines already. For example, restrict the use of the passive voice, use language literally, and simplify the writing style. However, many guidelines may be new to some technical writers.

Both of the following sentences are grammatically correct:
* Set up the system.
* Set the system up.

Now, as far as possible, I always use the first structure, and keep the parts of a phrasal verb together. Keeping the parts of the verb together increases consistency, improves machine translation, and helps non-native speakers who do not know the particular verb.

The subtitle of the book refers to writing documentation. However, most of the guidelines apply to copywriting as much as to technical writing. All writers who want to reach a global audience, to decrease translation costs, or to make their texts as clear as possible will benefit highly from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful guide to writing English for a global audience.
John R. Kohl's Global English Style Guide is a very useful resource for understanding the importance and practice of writing English for a global audience. In fact, it provides an exciting and passionate case for the value of language in technical documentation. The first chapter outlines the impact of Global English on costs, quality, and usability. It also examines the growing impact of machine translation. The rest of the book consists of a rich set of guidelines to follow. The most valuable part of the book, though, is the focus on before and after examples of sentences followed by discussions of why one solution is better than another. My only frustration with the book is that it does not serve well as a quick reference, which is what I would normally expect from a style guide. However, if I have to chose, I would much prefer to engage in the logic of the author's recommendations rather than just a prescriptive list of do's and don'ts. ... Read more

Product Description
This collection of essays focuses on both how and why assessment serves as a key element in the teaching and practice of technical and professional communication. The collection is organized to form a dual approach: on the one hand, it offers a landscape view of the activities involved in assessment - examining how it works at institutional, program, and classroom levels; on the other, it surveys the implications of using assessment for formulating, maintaining, and extending the teaching and practice of technical communication. The book offers teachers, students, scholars, and practitioners alike evidence of the increasingly valuable role of assessment in the field, as it supports and enriches our thinking and practice. No other volume has addressed the demands of and the expectations for assessment in technical communication. Consequently, the book has two key goals. The first is to be as inclusive as is feasible for its size, demonstrating the global operation of assessment in the field. For this reason, descriptions of assessment practice lead to examinations of some key feature of the landscape captured by the term 'technical communication'. The second goal is to retain the public and cooperative approach that has characterized technical communication from the beginning. To achieve this, the book represents a 'conversation', with contributors chosen from among practicing, highly active technical communication teachers and scholars; and the chapters set up pairs of opening statement and following response. The overriding purpose of the volume, therefore, is to invite the whole community into the conversation about assessment in technical communication. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Guidebook to Better Medical Writing
Simple explanations on tips to improve writing. At first glance I thought it was almost too juvenile; but the book did get the message across in simple terms, which actaully did help in the application of those tips. Very inexpensive for it's value.

4-0 out of 5 stars For Those Who Have Never Written for Publication
I purchased this book as required reading for a doctoral program. Iles takes you from the simple to the complex in a very easy to read format. The book is simple; Iles practice what he teaches. He provides plenty of examples and step-by-step instructions as the subtitle states.

The book in not just about the basics of medical writing; Iles shares his insights into selecting journals and how to work with the editors. The "Guidebook To Better Medical Writing" provides lots of how-tos, but more importantly it provides a lot of valuable what not to dos. Iles' advice is combined with the encouragement that every novice medical writer needs.

This is a perfect 'starter' book because of its simple and concise nature. I suspect it will be my constant companion as I venture into the medical writing world.

Product Description
Scientific Writing and Communication: Papers, Proposals, and Presentations covers all the areas of scientific communication that a scientist needs to know and to master to successfully promote his or her research and career. This unique "all-in-one" handbook begins with a discussion of the basics of scientific writing style and composition and then applies these principles to writing research papers, review articles, grant proposals, research statements, and resumés as well as to preparing academic presentations and posters.

FEATURES:

A practical presentation carefully introduces such basic writing mechanics as word choice and word location, sentence structure, and paragraph organization before moving into manuscript planning and organizational strategies. Extensive hands-on guidance for composing scientific documents and presentations then follows.

Relevant and multi-disciplinary examples taken from real research papers and grant proposals by writers ranging from students to Nobel Laureates illustrate clear technical writing as well as common mistakes that one should avoid. Examples are drawn from a broad range of scientific disciplines including medicine, molecular biology, biochemistry, ecology, geology, chemistry, engineering, and physics.

Extensive end-of-chapter exercise sets provide the opportunity to review style and composition principles and encourage readers to apply them to their own writing.

Writing guidelines and revision checklists warn scientists against common pitfalls and equip them with the most successful techniques to revise a scientific paper, review article, or grant proposal.

Annotated text passages bring the writing principles and guidelines to life by applying them to real-world, relevant, and multidisciplinary examples.

Clear, easy-to-follow writing style is understandable to both native and non-native English speakers; special ESL features address problems faced by non-native English speakers.

Eight chapters on grant writing demonstrate how to write successful grant applications and how to avoid the most common application mistakes.

Covering all the facets of communication that scientists need to master, Scientific Writing and Communication: Papers, Proposals, and Presentations is ideal for a wide range of readers--from upper-level undergraduates and graduate students to postdoctoral fellows, faculty, and professional researchers--in the life sciences, medicine, psychology, chemistry, and engineering. ... I donot receive the order!!I also cannot find a phone or email to report this problem ????

4-0 out of 5 stars Successful Scientific Writing
This book is very helpful and very informative. The authors present the information that is needed so that it is easy to digest.

2-0 out of 5 stars Useful but disappointing
This book provides a useful description of the entire process of writing manuscripts, from information acquisition and literature searches to a very lengthy description of the editing process. There is very little information on the actual contents of the manuscript.I was looking for an in-depth description of each section of the manuscript and possibly some suggestions or helpful hints.Writing of the manuscript and the contents of each section is limited to a few sentences on each section.I was looking for a book that guides someone early in their scientific career through the process of writing the actual manuscript, rather than focusing so heavily on the editing process, as this book does.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scientific Writing - A difficult task made easier
"Successful Scientific Writing" is a well written, user friendly and sometimes humorous guide to effective scientific writing. Even the wire, lay open binding is user friendly. The text is up to date, well organized and provides guidance on effective use of computers and software in the entire scientific endeavor.Of course the primary strength is in helping the reader through the writing and publication of the scientist's efforts. This concise work would be especially appropriate as a text in scientific writing classes. The exercises provided would be great student assignments. Additionally the exercises are fun and enhance points made in the text.Matthews, et al have given us a guide that is appropriate for advanced writers as well.Virtually every page has gems of wisdom or insights that will enhance the end result of scientific communication. This book may be especially helpful for those that are "stuck" in trying to get started writing or have complete "writers block".After reading and using this book, readers will likely be thankful that the authors have so adeptly conveyed their wisdom and vast experience in helping others to write with greater clarity and brevity.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but could be better
Our lab used this book for a study group on effective scientific writing. We are located in Korea, so with the exception of the instructor and I, all participants were not native speakers of English. As a result, this review is from the viewpoint of foreign students. It is based on chapter reviews written by the members of our lab after finishing the book.

The book is just what it claims to be, a step-by-step approach to writing a scientific manuscript intended for publication. The first chapter helpfully furnishes a checklist (Table 1.3) for preparing a research paper. The chapter is actually a summary of the rest of the book so a reader already in the process of writing can easily find which chapter they wish to skip to via Table 1.3.

In the subsequent chapters, the authors provide good advice accompanied by helpful tables, examples and exercises, although the figure chapter could have used more tips on actually preparing the figures.Examples of poorly prepared and corrected figures would be a useful study aid.One student suggested that the second chapter on computer use was not particularly informative for graduate-level students. Regarding the chapter on grammar (chapter 6), another student pointed out that in some scientific articles, ungrammatical sentences are not corrected in order to effectively deliver the point.

The overall use of informal expressions and phrases seemed intended to make the text livelier for English-speaking students, but was confusing for several participants with English as a second language. We would like to suggest that the authors take their own advice and refrain from using slang and jargon. Several of us liked Appendix 2 and thought it was a good read for those unfamiliar with the practice of journal editors.

Apparently the authors had intended to attract those who had not already submitted a manuscript to read their book, but Successful Scientific Writing contains many helpful pointers for published scientists and journal editors, as well. ... Read more
