Someone can do better
This book is frustrating to read full of outdated references and has a terrible index.I cannot believe I had to waste money on this book for my class.Someone please make a better textbook.Trying to read this book is like putting a puzzle together.Each paragraph jumps from one area to the another.Right when you think your about to find the information you need to support your essay the books jumps into an unrelated tangent.This is the worst textbook I have ever had and I could not figure out why until I read the authors' biography.Both authors are from the school right across town.Surprise, Surprise.If you need to take a special education course and it is requiring this textbook find another text book to use.You will be glad you did.

Teaching Special Students in the General Education Classes
The book is pretty detailed and talks about many different laws that back up special students in education.It also talks about all the different types of special students that one ca n have in the general education classrooms.Overall I recommend this book if you have little or no knowledge of what is classified under Special students and how to go about helping them in their Education.

Great but Incomplete
I've been a faithful user of the Lewis & Doorlag book since its first edition. Each subsequent revision has added substance and useful information that makes buying it worthwhile. Of all the introductory texts on special education, this one is the most concise, reader-friendly, practical and up-to-date. It has invaluable teaching strategies and resources to inform the practice of special educators and diagnosticians. The only downside that is consistent across all editions is the unevenness of its content. In virtually every chapter about a given exceptionality, say mental retardation, more emphasis is placed on nature of the disability and teaching strategies than on its causes. Therefore, when using this book as a teaching tool in college, it has to be supplemented with other resources that do more justice to the etiology of each special need. ... Read more

Easy read, interesting and informative
This book was needed for a special education course, but there is a new edition/version of this book out that I was required to purchase for the course. I made the mistake and bought this version. The newer edition has chapters in a slightly different order and more example lessons, but there is supplemental information on this book online by the publisher including questions to make sure that you are understanding to assist anyone.
I would recommend this edition or the newer edition of the book.

This product came exactly as described. My only concern was how long it took to arrive. I was into my second week of class when my book finally arrived.

Very displeasing!!
I was very unhappy with this product. I ordered this book on January 7, 2010 the current date it February 11, 2010 and I have not got my book in the mail!!!! I do not plan on buying products from Amazon any more when they lose the products that I have purchased, it is not right for them to make a profit off of me when I do not receive what I paid for!!!!

A good book for every teacher, young or old, experienced or not, because even though we know or should know the basics of this topic; it helps to be educated, re-educated and reminded of these special students.

This book came in good condition, it had been highlighted in some areas, but these areas were ones I needed to study, so they were helpful.I saved half the price of buying the book new, so it was definitely worth it.I highly recommend buying textbooks this way over the school bookstore which charged $84.00 for a used copy when Amazon charged me $55.00 for the same thing.If I had waited to buy the book at the college bookstore as a friend of mine did, all the used copies would have been gone and I would have had to pay $112.00 for a new copy.Thank you Amazon.com! ... A Material Science Companion
The authors have done a fantastic job of presenting general chemistry with a material science flavor.Each chapter clearly presents materials and their effects on our lives as well as demonstrations to help the educator present the material to their classes.We have the students use the text as a reference for a 'materials lab' in our general chemistry course and the students loved it.The text, if adopted for a class, has lab experiments containing clear lists of all parts and equipment needed as well as suggested sources.The experiments range for simple tests to complete property studies or synthetic processes.We found the text compliments experiments from other sources very well.

How two teachers let their students work independently
This is an interesting resource for secondary school science teachers and a very quick read. I appreciate the inquiry-based activities that the authors share with the reader, but be aware that this is just a compilation of their experiences. The concepts might be transferable to other secondary-level science courses but they are certainly not suitable for post-secondary science courses.

Great for Chem teachers wanting to go inquiry
This book is a great primer for any chem teacher that is thinking about going with more inquiry in their classroom.It provides a look into the classroom of the authors who have been doing inquiry based instruction for many years.

I would have liked more detail on how and when they include traditional instruction however.

Very interesting book
Very interesting book for chemistry teachers. As a chemstry teacher I recommend to put in practice the strategies proposed in this book. You will get very good results with your students at high school or college.

Good for teachers familiar with constructivist technique
This is a good but way too short book about constructivist teaching in the science classroom.For teachers who are not familair with constructivist teaching methods, or don't really understand them, I recommend you read some of the literature or take a course on it first.There is not enough information in this book, I think, for the newbie to constructivist teaching.I would like to see more detail about how the instructors got from September to May, and more detail on how they scheduled time, especially journal time.
There are some great tips in here if you do know some things about constructivist teaching.The whole concept of teaching science and inquiry is well explained, and I will gratefully use many of their ideas. The book does a good job of helping teachers link chemistry with everyday life, and takes some of the "academic only" focus away from the laboratory.

Doesn't help
I just starting teaching introductory Chemistry at a university.Many students do not participate during lecture and do not complete the course with a satisfactory grade.I thought this book would help me foster independent learning in my course.If this is what is taught in high school, then this is one of the problems (lack of preparation for college).The examples are more pertinent for a junior-high basic science class.I do see the importance of learning social skills, but the book lacks content for teaching chemistry.What were once called laboratory exercises are now called inquiry-based scientific communities.Beware of books with too many exclamation points in the text!!! ... This book is a great introduction into what a student with autism will mean in your general education class. If you are unfamiliar with the needs of students with high functioning autism, this will be a great fit.

This book is a great tool for beginning teachers.I do not recommend the "myeducationlab" if anyone thinks it is worth buying the book new.I never used it more than an initial look.

I found this book after being disgusted with the required text for my methods class. This is a great text! Praxis PLT & INTASC concepts are covered in every chapter. A lot of detail on classroom management, direct & indirect strategies, discipline, assessment, grading, working with parent and colleagues, differentiating instruction and planning. It also goes into a little history of educational reform, Goals 2000, and "A Nation at Risk" which were actually topics during an interview for a job.
This text should be a required reading for all methods classes. In fact, my peers are now reading it to prepare for the PLT. ... Read more

Great Teaching Tool
It is obvious Dr. Monnin has a huge love for the comics format.The lessons she provides in TEACHING GRAPHIC NOVELS are invaluable tools for classroom learning.She makes the traditional lessons in plot, character, crisis action, etc., more intuitive and lively for students because she provides a visual guideline.For the educator, the lessons Dr. Monnin has created and compiled will save countless hours of trying to reinvent the wheel.

Not useful
I am a first year English teacher. Throughout my methodology classes we talked endlessly about what a great tool graphic novels are for teaching, and I couldn't agree more! However this book falls flat. Any English teacher could make a flow chart of plot elements in their sleep...This may be helpful for someone who doesnt know anything about graphic novels or comics, but it just is not worth the money for those who have a basic knowledge of the genre. I am writing a unit on American Born Chinese for my 9th graders and will not be using any material from this book. I suggest you go with Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art

Good book, heavy on the practical
This book certainly lives up to its title "practical strategies for the secondary ELA classroom."It's chuck full of activities, some of which can easily be photocopied and used "as is".I had one problem, though.For some reason I couldn't take in more than two or three pages per sitting.It was like the words and exercises were screaming at me.There was something about the layout and type setting that gave me a sensory overload.What I wanted was a guideline, a demonstration of how graphic novels can be used so that I could create my own activities.This book provides a detailed step by step format.I suppose that's perfect for some, but it was very distracting for me.

Buy it, read it, use it!
The subtitle of Dr. Monnin's book is, "practical strategies for the secondary ELA classroom" and I am happy to say that she has definitely placed her emphasis on "practical."Ready-to-use materials are the best for the weary classroom teacher looking to liven things up.What's great, though, is the accessible theoretical basis for how using graphic novels can and should be a seamless experience in an ELA context.Bottom line: if you are looking for a few back-pocket activities to spice things up, they are here.However, a systematic use of the activities and theories described herein will engage your students in ways you, your administrators, and their parents want them to be.

There is nothing technologically amazing here.There are no links to SMART activities.There are no gadgets.What you get here are soundly-designed instructional activities meant to scaffold students of all literacy levels into a critical engagement with visual and print based texts.

What I love: The direct approach and accessible language.Dr. Monnin may have fancy credentials, but she is a reader at heart and wants to help other people love reading.This fact is evident in how simply she has designed the activities and the handouts that support them.I am happy to see that many of the novels and artists that Dr. Monnin recommends are already in use in my classroom - in fact, this external support has encouraged me in the knowledge that I am on the right track with building parallel visual and textual literacies.

What I'd love to see made better: A purely nerdy part of me wished for easier signposting for the different activities.Sometimes, I wasn't sure if I was in a new section or in another part of the previous section.I figured it out, but I had to think about it (this, I think, is not a fault of Dr. Monnin as much as it is a design issue to be discussed with the book's publisher.

All in all, I intend to put this book into the hands of my ELA and literacy specialists at the school as soon as possible.There are a lot of possibilities for our population in graphic novel study.Buy it, read it, use it!

A must for teachers
Too often many teachers take one look at a graphic novel and think that it's just a comic book. But Dr. Monnin shows us in her book that graphic novels are a great teaching tool, that can stand side by side with any great piece of literature. After reading this I've been able to incorporate new literacies to the next generation of students, who are not just text learners but also very visual in their learning. Not only does Dr. Monnin provide lesson strategies for the mainstream classroom, but also provides excellent strategies on how graphic novels can help with ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) students in our classrooms. Randy Knight has taught introductory physics for more than 20 years at Ohio State University and California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo, where he is currently Professor of Physics. Professor Knight received a bachelor's degree in physics from Washington University in St. Louis and a Ph.D. in physics from the University of California, Berkeley. Excellent Guide to Teaching Physics
I have been teaching phyiscs for about 20 years and was unaware of the research done in education in this area. This book will help me to breathe new vigor into my courses.

I don't know if I would call these lessons easy, but they certainly are successful.

Once it gets into the nitty gritty of the topics, it goes through every topic pointing out common misconceptions students have, ways to gently convince them that they are wrong (conventional physics education may teach them how to use equations, but it doesn't change anything about how they think the world works) and nudge them towards the correct intuition.

I just finished going through yet another day of electric field and potential with my physics students, and the activities he suggests really helped them grasp these intangible concepts and how they interact.

I would have never thought of the things in this book on my own, but once I got it I immediately tossed "talking-head" lectures out the window and now my students do physics WITH me and solve problems together and get instant feedback on problems to keep them on the path I want them to be on. If you teach physics at any level, this book is helpful for combating incorrect "knowns" about the universe, but it is utterly invaluable if you teach at the honors or college level.

Physics meets Active Learning
Physics is hard.This makes it easier.

Thankfully, another professor lent me his copy of this book when I first started teaching Introductory Physics otherwise I would have been sunk.After three years, I still read the corresponding chapter from this book before preparing a chapter for the class.There are so many useful tidbits which have helped my students.

Knight has combined physics education research with active learning methods to help students to learn both concepts and problem-solving. And he has done so in a concise, relevant text for teachers.

As frustrated as I am with many of my student's inability to grasp physics, they are far, far better off than if I had not been given this book.Every physics teacher should have a well-worn copy on their desk!!!

Good insights
It was very valuable to read, in some detail, how another teacher approaches the craft of teaching Physics. Knight is very accurate in his descriptions of student misconceptions. Before I began to teach each unit of study, I consulted this book to gain some fresh ideas and insights. I was never disappointed.He also provides specific examples of problems that he uses in the classroom, and exam questions.

A must for successful physics instruction
I found this book invaluable for teaching my AP Physics class. It lays out inquiry based instruction for all levels of physics and backs its claims with physics education research. A Great Introduction
I recently had to use this for one of my classes at National University.As a student, you get those books where reading 10 pages takes about an hour, and the book drones on... this book isn't like that.It had a style that flowed, as it was asked in a Question and Answer format.It is easily referenced because you can pretty much use the table of contents as an index as it shows all the topics.It's a great introductory text on teaching, and one of those books you keep later for reference.I highly recommend it.

Questions I never thought to ask are answered
I used Ask the Teacher for classes in my teaching credential coursework. I was most impressed that the author asked, and answered, questions that I never would have thought of. He provides strong opinions and backed them up with evidence. I would say this book really helped formulate my philosophy of education. Best of all this text is actually interesting and readable!

Parent and soon to be educator
Mark Ryan's "Ask the Teacher" was a required text in one my teaching credential classes.It was a breath of fresh air.It doesn't read like a textbook in that it's very conversational in the way it was written.I actually enjoyed reading this book.It has a lot of useful, practical information.I will most definitely refer back to this book throughout my teaching career.

Very resourceful book!!
This book remains on my classroom's bookshelf as a quick resource for questions I may have about specific classroom issues. A new teacher to my school borrowed it and liked it so much due to its usefulness that she purchased her own copy. We agreed that it is extremely helpful on addressing specific concerns that come up through our daily class teachings. Also, the 'Question and Answer' format is so appreciated as it seems whatever question I have has been located in this book and answered!

teaching book
I got this book with a huge sticky stain over most of the back pages, but otherwise normal wear and tear. You get what you pay for, and I only paid $7, so that was definitely the case here.

Good case histories
This book has a relevancy for teachers in orienting to some of the controversial aspects of teaching methodology and philosophy. It plays these out with a wealth of case histories which document the effects of these upon individual teachers and students. A very useful book for any teacher.

Intro To Teaching
Great textbook at a great price. It arrived in a timely fashion and was in great condition for a used book-like new almost.

Required, but a poor book.
This text may have been required by the course I took, but it is a low quality test written in the obscure, academic way that gives textbooksbad name. It takes an interesting subject and makes it boring.

so far, it's weak
I'm through chapter 3 and so far, this volume is weak compared to the other Intro to Teaching textbooks in print.It seems to me to be especially weak on defining and explaining the idea of teaching as a *profession* & since that's ostensibly this book's entire purpose, I feel that you'd be better off with just about anything else for your intro class. ... Great book for teaching
There is an old saying, when confused with all the "stuff" out there about learning something, or developing skill, get back to the fundamentals. This book details the 7 laws of learning.Get back to basics,and be a better teacher in whatever arena of teaching you have an interest in.I coach basketball and have found this a great aid to make sure I'm getting information across to my players.

The Seven Laws of Teaching
This is not the book that I thought it was, I needed for a class that I was teaching, but there are a lot of misspellings and it is inconsistent with the original "Seven Laws of Teaching"I am shipping this order back.

A very left brain approach to teaching
I hate to be the one giving the lowest (so far) review for a book, but I just can't give this book more than three stars.I am a pastor now, but was a teacher in a classical school for three years.I read every book I could find on teaching and the Seven Laws of Teaching was one of them.

I do not want to come across as condescending to the other reviewers, but I found this book to be so obvious and basic that it taught me nothing new.For example, one of the laws is for the teacher to know their subject matter.Really?I thought that I could fake it and my teenagers would never notice.Not that this "law" isn't true or even important, but this wasn't news to me.I can't imagine trying to teach pre-schoolers without knowing my material backward and forward.

The second law is that we should capture the attention of our students.Think about that for just a second.Can you think of a scenario where a thinking human being would be teaching without the attention of their students and they would think that is normal?Yes, I realize there are teachers out there who will drone on and on while the students text each other, eat their lunches and do about anything except listen.But are you one of those teachers?If not, then this law is not going to make you a better teacher.

A third example of one of the laws is that the teacher should use language familiar to the student.Again, not trying to sound condescending, but is this news to you?I believe in using language that is sprinkled with challenging words so that they hear them in context and begin to build a stronger vocabulary.But obviously if they can't understand your vocabulary, you aren't going to reach them.

After the first three laws, they actually get much more enriching.Building on what students already know, arousing their desire to learn, learning being thinking ideas on your own and finally reviewing what has been learned to make it truly apprehended.These four laws are much more valuable, but there are other books that express them more powerfully than Mr. Gregory.

In my weekly podcast, Christian With A Brain, I discuss the role of education in the lives of believers and used The Seven Laws for reference.But, if you are like me and you believe that learning/teaching is more a product of relationship than the practice of principles, you will do better to purchase another book.I recommend: Teacher by Mark Edmundson - though he has a humanistic worldview, he taps into the art of teaching rather than the laws of teaching.Be warned though, Edmundson's book is a memoir, not a manual.

Seven Laws of Teaching
The author has excellent suggestions for becoming a good teacher but the book starts slow.At times the material seems to be in the most complicated form and could be better understood in plain, every day terms.
