Description:
The double-edged sword of Jomtien (1990), which emphasized access to education, and of Dakar (2000), which placed additional emphasis on the quality of education, the Holy Grail, provides the context for the expansion of education in developing countries. One of the most frequently espoused ingredients for success is good governance. The cornerstone of the discussion raised in this article is a small-scale qualitative case study, which investigates the impact of local governance, i.e. community organizations, on community schools in rural Punjab, Pakistan. The research asks: What are the factors which community organizations contribute to teachers' motivation? What is the impact on teachers' performance and what are the implications for the quality of teaching? The resulting discussion explores the extent to which community organizations may support teachers better than the more centralized government system, whilst also reflecting on their limitations. Evidence is presented to support the view that local governance may enhance monitoring and accountability systems, and the ethos of schools, but that without the resources to deliver adequate levels of training and follow up, it can deliver very little significant improvement to the quality of teaching. ... Product Description
''Breaks new ground....Lieberman and Miller tell us how teacher learning community develops inside and outside schools, using evidence from research, theory, and reflections on practice. A must-read for anyone committed to improving teaching quality teacher leaders, teacher educators, principals and district administrators, school reformers, and professional developers.'' --Joan Talbert, co-director of the Stanford University Center for Research on the Context of Teaching

''Lieberman and Miller give teaching back to teachers and demonstrate the power of what can be done when teachers improve their work together. This is not a text about numbers and targets, but a book about people working to improve their practice in the real and messy worlds of children and classrooms that all teachers know so well.'' --Andy Hargreaves, Brennan Chair in Education, Boston College

''This book provides a rich and rewarding collection of perspectives on teachers' professional communities. Contributing practitioners draw on their experience to show how both teachers and students benefit from the new expectations and practices created in the professional communities. The editors' research-based framework pulls together this experience and existing literature to deepen our understanding of professional communities both practically and theoretically--an important contribution to the field.'' -- Milbrey McLaughlin, David Jacks Professor of Education and Public Policy, Stanford University

''Support for the notion of professional learning communities has become widespread but deep understanding of how to start and sustain such groups of teacher learners is much more scarce. This book brings the practice of professional learning communities alive, with vivid examples drawn from real schools in a wide range of settings. It is a must-read for those who want to support teacher learning that enables student learning.''--Linda Darling-Hammond, Charles E. Ducommun Professor of Education, Stanford University

Based on research and many years of lived experience in schools, the authors have become convinced that teachers learn best within their own work communities. In this volume, they explore what research and practice have to tell us about how such communities grow and develop, and how to negotiate the inherent tension between improving competence and building community. Using five themes that emerged from their studies of practice (context, capacity, content, commitment, and challenge), the authors examine selected research studies, personal reflections, and five cases that were especially commissioned for this volume in order to uncover new insights and understandings. The text begins with essays on research and long-term development projects and concludes with vignettes that address the following questions: What is the context of your program? How does your program deal with facilitating both competence and the building of community? What are the challenges and how has your program dealt with them? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Organize your physical and instructional environments
I checked this book out from the library as one of several books I am reviewing for assistance in getting ready to return to teaching. I was a VERY new teacher when I took time off, so I am still looking for a lot of organizational help, but I also have some classroom experience.

For a compulsively organized person, the first half of the book provides dozens of excellent organizational tips. Most of them are not earth-shattering, but that is part of its usefulness--basic, often overlooked, tips and tools are covered in a very succinct way.

The second part of the book covers organizing instruction, de Bono's Thinking Hats (which was entirely new to me), working with special needs students and working with parents.

If not a must have, this book is at least a must read for all instructors who don't feel like organizational experts already!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Teasure for Teachers
I read this book as part of a teacher-research project for the Graduate School of Education at George Mason University. The titleof the project was "The Classroom Setting."I found this short, easy-to-read book very helpful.Hundreds of practical ideas are described; many make you wonder why you didn't think of them years ago.Good diagrams and pictures make the text even more relevant.More ideas could have been added, though.Again, it is quite short.Yet, for a teacher concerned with classroom arrangement and design, it is excellent. ... Product Description
A community college role in teacher education is not new. But there is a new--or, more accurately, renewed--interest in this role. A national conversation about how community colleges can help us alleviate the teacher shortage has truly begun, with many believe that an expanded community college role is critical to meet the nation's need for well prepared teachers. This volume illustrates the extent to which community colleges have become major players in teacher education, not only in the traditional way of providing the first two years of an undergraduate degree in teacher education but in such more controversial ways as offering associate and baccalaureate degrees in teacher education and providing alternative certification programs.

This is the 121st issue of the Jossey-Bass higher education series New Directions for Community Colleges. ... Read more

Product Description
Pressures for reform in teacher education have begun to take on the same sense of urgency as school reform. Those faculties of education who have been strong advocates for change in the schools now find themselves the subject of similar pressures from governmental policy makers. Attempts at change have taken place in many different countries and jurisdictions around the world.; This book details, through a series of international vignettes, how teachers are responding to the changing times and social contexts in which they do their work. The authors hold the view that changes are inevitable in teacher education but what is not clear is who will control the changes and whether the end result will actually improve the preparation of teachers. The theme of the book is that the reform of teacher education should be informed by intelligent debate and that any attempt to restructure teacher preparation should result from a careful reconceptualisation of it purposes and processes. ... Product Description

In the current climate of restructuring and teacher empowerment, teachers are assuming leadership roles in ever-widening circles. And what could be more appropriate? All teachers shape relationships and make a measurable difference in their students’ lives.

Authors Lee Bolman and Terry Deal use a lively conversation between a new and a veteran teacher—Joan Hillard and Margaret Juhl—to show that good teaching and good leadership have much in common. As a new teacher, Joan faces many challenges, as she becomes involved in school issues. Their conversation highlights the tension between personal and professional lives, especially when teachers assume new roles.

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat Simplistic
No school situation will ever be as easy and neat as the story presented in this somewhat annoying book.I didn't care for the style, although ultimately that didn't get in the way of my taking away a few kernels of goodness from this book. The authors present four "frames" and urge teachers, in particular, to notice what frame they most naturally align with.At the same time, they point out how the political and the personal are an overlay on so many parts of school life.Stepping back and defining what is going on can never really hurt. The main teacher in this fable is a likeable sort...and it was with amazement that at the end of the book I was wiping away tears.....so I guess if the premise was a bit hokey it didn't matter a whole lot, because they sure got me involved.I would have prefered a little less manipulation of the reader, but all in all, it was worth the two hours it took to read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars McKeachie's Teaching Tips: Strategies, Research, and Theory for College and University Teachers
Very informative. I found the book to be very helpful for the course that I was taking and everyday teaching.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nurse educator
Recommended by my professor as a 'recommended resource'; I have found it very useful as I prepare to become a nurse educator; it is a resource that she frequently uses....

5-0 out of 5 stars More than tips...
In this small book, McKeachie does provide a plethora of good teaching tips for the college-level TA or new instructor. But he also shares the results of research into teaching in a way that is clear and persuasive.Considering the "tiger-in-the-living-room" fact that most PhD students will find themselves in front of a classroom full of undergraduates, they could do a lot worse than find themselves in a seminar with this book as the central tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful collection of practical tips and scholarly 'lore'
If you are looking for great ideas based on sound theory and practice, McKeachie's book is the way to go. His book is organized into sections that will guide you from a few months before the first day of class right up to the final exam. His collection of suggestions help with class discussions, grading papers, dealing with difficult student situations, incorporating new media into the classroom, and many other pertinent topics.

A remarkably useful book. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars It is useful

The biggest problem we have are time, resources and effort required to step out of our comfort zone. ... Read more
