Little Book of Beaded Crusts etc.
This is a nice little chap book but probably not quite what I expected.Little short on the how to's but an attractive little book.

Nice book
The book is approximately 6" x 6" but has some nice projects.Most of the tassels are made entirely of beads and some are beads combined with silk thread hanging down.All the tassels are very nice.The "crusted" items are sewn on beads.Some crusted projects are wooden beads wrapped in ribbon and "crusted" and some crusted projects are tops of boxes.I am not sorry I ordered this book.I think the projects are very nice. ... This is an excellent book;however, I would not consider it for the inexperienced!If you already own The Encyclopedia of Curtains I would not suggest this book as it repeats almost everything.You will be basicallypaying for the patterns!The print is very large-helpful! ... Read more

Excellent Reference
On Kindle version...If you are downloading from Kindle there are several editions. The reviews are the same for all editions. I recommend downloading samples before purchase. Some are definitely better than others.

I float between many crafts and I often am looking for a technique to do what I envision rather than envision the piece from the technique. This is great for that because there have been so many changes in the needlework and today's techniques tend to be more casual and eclectic at the same time. This book shows how to do many types of needlework that are no longer common today. I find having this book invaluable in my reference library.

I bought this book because I was looking for a book that covers smocking and and other older hand stitching techniques. This was one of the few that I could look inside before buying which in retrospect was not too helpful but did make for a more comfortable buying experience at the time.

This is a complete book of needle work but just like the other reviews have warned, the images are sometimes dark. Also, it's not a quick read/reference. It's an exact reissue of an earlier book and I think it would have been helpful to update the instruction style. It's a thick book and some of the stitching I will never use but the small section on smocking was helpful. So despite my negativity, if you are looking for a complete book of antique needlework, this may the one for you.

Worth having in your library...
This is an awesome book & a great reference companion to Beeton's Needlework, altho the reproductions for the Kindle edition are slightly less than perfect...

Disappointing
The book in entirely in black and white. Many of the diagrams are so dark and of such poor contrast that no detail can be discerned. The book has a wealth of detail but the illustrations are very disappointing.

It's like a cyberpunk genre mashup
If you took the Reader's Digest Guide to Sewing, mixed it with a Radio Shack parts catalog, and tossed in the early works of William Gibson, you might end up with something like Fashioning Technology by Syuzi Pakhchyan.

Like the Reader's Digest Guide, Fashioning Technology starts out discussing materials, but instead of discussing weaves and knits, warp and weft, the author writes about electroluminescent wire, heat-shrink tubing, and light-emitting diodes. Leaving topics about sewing machines and sergers to other books, Fashioning Technology has tutorials on basic circuits in series and parallel. Were this a different book, the chapter titled "The Art of Soldering" might have been a chapter about embroidery.

The tutorials and materials discussion make up the bulk of the book, but the final third details projects that use the materials and techniques the author described earlier. The projects, which range from clothing, to interior decorations, to toys, are interesting because they show what can be done. Rather than trying to copy the projects, I'm letting them serve as a seed of inspiration for future projects of my own.

This book probably can probably be useful to different types of readers. Stitchers or crafters who are looking for something more than regular sewing might find new possibilities with this book. Likewise, hardware hackers who are looking for other options, might consider some of the info here.

Part of me wants to see more books like this, because I think the book has some shortcomings. The LilyPad Arduino seems like it would have been a natural fit for this book, but it was nowhere to be found. On the other hand, if this book is a bit like dangling your feet in the water of electronics, then a discussion about Arduino would require scuba gear. It's a bit beyond the other topics in the book.

smart crafting
Very detailed instuctions, but not enough ilustrations. Fun project even though I wish for more projects and ideas.

Fun, clear, and useful
I'm very happy I bought this book. I came to it as somebody who is interested in multi-media art and crafting, but with little experience of home made electronics. If you're as clueless as I was don't worry, the author starts at the beginning by providing pictures and descriptions of all the parts you will need, she gives a great introduction to electronics, and her directions are very clear. The projects in the book are varied and fun, but I was more interested in learning how they were made than actually making them. I was able to use what I learned from reading about her projects to make my own designs. At the end of the book there's a very useful list of suppliers of materials, without it I would have found it hard to track some of them down.

Tech you can use and understand
I picked this up at the library to check it out and was immediately impressed with it's accessible and easily understood explanation of how to read and use electronic components like resistors, capacitors, transistors and LEDs. Just about the best I've ever seen. I had to add this to my personal collection for that attribute alone. However, there's a lot of basic and easy to grasp instruction and information on materials and production techniques, too.

There are plenty of projects in this book to get you started and if you're half-way creative and imaginative you should be able to springboard off them to come up with your own ideas.

I wish more instructional manuals and books were written as clear and understandable as this one.

This book is a wealth of information for those looking to start delving into the world of 'soft circuits' and smart materials.It is for the beginner, and includes detailed information on circuits and parts, as well as explanations of the latest smart materials and their usages.In the last section of the book, there are easy-to-follow instructions on making a variety of projects that will inspire anyone on the possibilities for these materials.
