Product Description
This concise account of Taiwan's history makes a cogent, compelling argument for the right of the Taiwanese people to declare their nation independent, if they so choose. Davison's bold stand--unprecedented from a Western author--challenges the "one China" notion advanced in the Shanghai Communique of 1972 and states unequivocally that, should independence be proclaimed, it could only be taken away by force if the international community sides with contemporary might over historical right. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Go for Copper's Taiwan first
I'm still new to the small field of English historical writing to Taiwan: so far I've only read this book and _Taiwan: Nation-state or Province?_ by John Copper. I have to say, Copper is clearly the more mature researcher and the superior writer. Copper's work, similar in length, scope, and purpose to Davison's (not to mention cheaper!), is based on a much more complete bibliography, a longer experience among Taiwan researchers in Washington, and despite the title, a clearer argument for Taiwan's historical and cultural independence from China.

Much of Davison's book is a summary of history texts used in Taiwan - authors Qi Jialin, Zhou Mingfeng, and Huang Dashou are mentioned particularly often. Thus, if you wish to start investigating history books about Taiwan written in Taiwan, Davison's book offers a kind of introduction. But for a purely general introduction, I can't really say there is anything in Davison I could not have gotten from Copper if I had read that one first. ... Read more

From the author: According to reports on international competitiveness prepared by the Swiss-based International Institute for Management Development (IMD), since the year 2000, Taiwan has posted a less-than-ideal government efficiency ranking. While Taiwan was ranked 14 in 2000, that dropped to 24 in 2002 and had only improved to 18 by the end of 2004. As a country subject to intense competitive pressure, Taiwan is now fully committed to the processes of governmental reform that are sweeping the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book moved me so much I put it on the internet
I was so moved when I read this book about my homeland that I contacted the current edition publishers (Taiwan Publishing Company in Irvine) and asked permission to create an online edition. So, I bought a scanner and OCR software and the book was online on 11 November 1997.A simple Google search of Formosa Betrayed book will get you to online editions of this book. If more people actually understood the history and true international status of Taiwan, then we would live in a much safer world.Memories of what really happened in crucial moments of Taiwanese history have faded. In particulary, the San Francisco Peace Treaty of 1951 has all but been forgotten.Taiwan does not belong to the People's Republic of China.

5-0 out of 5 stars The truth may take forever, but it always comes out.
Forty years ago, as a young serviceman serving in the military, I lived on the island of Formosa. There was a whispered rumor that a forbidden book existed that told the true story about the Chinese occupation of the island. No Chinese, American or Taiwanese would be allowed to read its title, its cover or speak of its author, who could only be referred to as a disgruntled former American Embassy employee.

For forty years it bothered me that I had been denied access to this book.

Finally, after I searched the Internet until I learned enough to know the name of its author and its title was I empowered to actually find a copy, buy it, hold it in my hands and peel back the lies I had been told all those years ago.

Finally I understand some of the reasons why the Taiwanese people seemed so fearful of the police.Their silent faces speak to me across the years and I am liberated by the truth I now own.It was an unexplainable horror to live in a country where free access to the written word was withheld by force and by threats of violence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Formosa (Taiwan) Betrayed (United States Foreign Policy)
This book is outstanding. It is well written and contains much information not usually known about the relations between the U.S. and Taiwan. It is a hard book to locate for a cheap price and usually is in high demand. This book is so well written that I keep several copies on hand so I can re-read and refer to its content.

5-0 out of 5 stars True and sad history of Taiwan
This book tells the truth and what really happened in Taiwan when KMT occupied Taiwan. It helps not only all Taiwanese but also people around the world to realize how Taiwanese have been suffering from KMT's dictatorship. Unfortunately, KMT still exists in this country. I very much hope that this book will be printed again so that it can be available to everyone who wants to understand the true history of Taiwan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Is it true that the copy right of this book is owned by KMT?
I saw the content on the WEB. Is it true that KMT owned the copy right of this book after it was published and it is never printed since the first edition? My parents would not get me in trouble by talking about the "228" incident.

KMT has a lot of ways to suppress people's political functions. I remember that I need to submit a Letter of Assurance from the third party prior to get into the university admittance. The letter stated he or she guarantee my loyal to the "Country" and I do not participate the Chinese Communist. Otherwise he or she will be punished the same degree as me. Can you believe it? It was in 1968.

I remember my classmates disappeared before a city mayor election. The anti-KMT candidate was elected. These pro-anti-KMT candidate classmates never come back. Ten years later this anti-KMT candidate joined KMT and be nominated as the mayor of Kaohsiung. At that time KMT change the rule so that they can appointed the mayor without election.

I hope Mr. Kerr's book can be printed again one day.

Description:
This paper investigates whether banks exercise forbearance lending to troubled firms by presenting a stylized model and then testing the hypotheses implied by this model, using firm-level data of Taiwan. During 1991-1996 when the economy started to show signs of weakening, banks are found to have exercised forbearance lending across all types of firms, hoping that the economy would soon recover to salvage those ailing firms. During 1997-2001 when the recession went even deeper, banks were found no longer to forbear loans. This period saw a more rapid decline in property prices, which coincided with a wave of asset liquidation during this period. ... Read more
