    Extractions: All turtles have shells and scaly skin, but each species has special characteristics to live in its environment, such as webbed feet for swimming, long claws for digging, or a flattened shell to hide from predators in rock crevices. No matter where turtles live, they lay their eggs on land. Many turtles lay only a few eggs each year, and some lay only one egg every other year. In addition, many turtles reach sexual maturity at ten or more years. Together, these factors mean that the birth rate of wild turtle populations is very low. For many reasons, the collection of wild turtles places tremendous pressure on populations and has caused the endangerment of many species, especially when species face other human-caused threats like habitat destruction, water pollution, and unnatural predators.

Since then they have added a breeding colonies of leopard tortoises and Gulf Coast box turtles. North County Reptile Rescue was formally organized several years ago when Liz and Paul began taking in turtles, tortoises and then a variety of other reptiles that could no longer remain in their homes; or that had been turned loose by their former owners. Reptiles taken in are first evaluated as to their state of health, treated when necessary, fed, and quarantined. People wishing to adopt a turtle, tortoise or reptile may place their name on a waiting list. You may call at 760-630-4824 or email Liz . Be prepared to state what you wish to adopt. If you say you want to "adopt a tortoise" your name will not be added to a waiting list. You should do more research ­ there are many different types of turtles and tortoises and each needs specific care ­ and when you can say that you can care for a CA desert tortoise, or a sulcata, or a star tortoise, then your name will be added to a waiting list for that particular type of tortoise. You must come to Oceanside, CA to pick up the reptile when one is available; reptiles are not shipped. Just Released!

    Extractions: The upper shell of the turtle is called the carapace. The capapace of tortoises is high and domelike. The lower part of the shell is know as the plastron. It is characteristically flat or concave. The upper and lower shields are equipped with a hinge, which permits complete closure. The two parts of the shell is connected to the vertebrae and ribs. Due to their thick shells and heavily scaled limbs, tortoises have an effective protection again predators. Many thousands of these majestic giant tortoises were slaughtered by whalers and pirates in order to supply their ships with fresh meat. The few remaining specimens are now seriously endangered due to goats stripping their habitats of vegetation.
