UNITS - Grades 6 - 8 OVERVIEW Mathematics is a language we use to identify, describe and investigate the patterns and challenges of everyday living. It helps us to understand the events that have occurred and to predict and prepare for events to come so that we can more fully understand our world and more successfully live in it. Mathematics encompasses arithmetic, measurement, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics, probability and other fields. It deals with numbers, quantities, shapes and data, as well as numerical relationships and operations. Confronting, understanding and solving problems is at the heart of mathematics. Mathematics is much more than a collection of concepts and skills; it is a way of approaching new challenges through investigating, reasoning, visualizing and problem solving with the goal of communicating to others the relationships observed and problems solved. Extractions: Guaranteed to stimulate even the most jaded of Math students! These CDs are designed to satisfy the requirements of the British National Curriculum for Mathematics Attainment Target 4, which states that students should be able to "use a computer to generate and transform 2D and 3D objects ". Both discs are supplied with a Student's workbook and a Teacher's guide. Shape and Space 1 investigates the angles of polygons, and stellated polygons, and looks at regular and semi-regular tessallations. It also covers Archimedes' method for estimating Pi. Shape and Space 2 provides a simple introduction to the properties of polyhedra, including pyramids, prisms, and regular and stellated polyhedra. It also looks at Pythagoras' Theorum, and at Hamilton's Voyage Around the World. These CDs are designed to give an exciting introduction to geometry, and are both supplied with printed booklets for the Student, and with Teachers' Guides. Polytopia 1 describes the history and scientific applications of tessalations and polyhedra, from Plato's Geometrical Alchemy to Buckminsterfullerine.

Extractions: Pattern and form surround us from the branching angles of our blood vessels and the complexity of computer algorithms to inventory scheduling and the four-dimensional geometry of our universe. As the pure expression of pattern and form, mathematics is the language of all science. In the past 50 years, many disciplines computer science, statistics, ecology, and management science, among others have been virtually transformed by the infusion of mathematics. Alongside the traditional field of mathematical physics, one now finds new fields such as mathematical biology, mathematical economics, mathematical linguistics, and mathematical psychology. A mathematics degree could lead to graduate study in any of these fields, as well as in areas in pure and applied mathematics. Moreover, students have found a major in mathematics, with its training in logic, analysis, and precise expression, to be excellent preparation for careers in law business , or medicine Curriculum

Geometry And Computer The computer may actually facilitate the use of language in geometry. Doing TessalationsThis site is great for showing how to do tessellations on the computer http://www.whitworth.edu/Academic/Department/Education/Classes/ED421_Michaelis/g
Extractions: Is the computer a sound tool for thinking? Manipualtives are simply tools for children to think with; the computer provides a different set of tools, but can benefit even young children as a way of seeing how objects relate spatially. The children will be able to keep copies of their explorations and compare earlier work with later work. This is not easy in a manipulatives-only environment. We truly don't "know" something unless it becomes part of our language system. The computer may actually facilitate the use of language in geometry. With manipulatives the student might simply reach over and rotate an object to make it fit with another piece; in the computer environment the student must decide on such commands as Rotate Left or Flip Horizonal, and thereby learn important geometric language concepts in an embedded context.
