Extractions: OLYMPIC HISTORY Tennis formed part of the inaugural modern Olympic Games in 1896 and lasted until the 1924 Games in Paris. The trend for players to turn professional, a clash of dates with Wimbledon and arguments about the rulebook saw the sport drop out of the Games until 1984, when demonstration matches were played in Los Angeles. Tennis returned to the Olympic fold as an official sport in 1988, when professional players were allowed to take part. As such, the likes of Billie Jean King, Bjorn Borg and Rod Laver never had a chance to become Olympic champions, while the likes of Martina Navratilova were ruled ineligible by her own US federation because she did not wish to compete in the Federation Cup. Between 1896 and 1924, British players won 16 gold, 13 silver and 16 bronze medals and, as such, will remain at the top of the historic tennis medal table for at least a couple more Games to come despite Britain's lowly rating in world tennis.

Swimming Table Tennis Taekwondo Tennis Triathlon Volleyball Waterpolo Weightlifting Wrestling Home Tennis About this sport About Tennis Tennis events Given that the first lawn tennis club was only formed in 1872, it is testimony to its popularity that it featured at Athens just 38 years later. But the sport's roots can be traced much further back than that. Real, or royal, tennis was popular in France around the 10th century. Those early versions of the sport didn't even feature rackets and had more in common with the schoolyard game of handball than modern tennis. It wasn't until the 1500s that a racket made from wood and strung with animal gut was developed, but the game didn't really resemble modern tennis until the second half of the 19th century. By that time it was becoming popular in Britain. By 1877 a variant closely related to the modern game had been developed. In this year the All-England Croquet Club hit on a novel idea: they would hold a lawn tennis tournament to raise money for the club.

In 1908 and 1912, there was competition both indoors and outdoors. The sport was dropped from the Olympics after 1924. It returned as a demonstration sport in 1968 and 1984 and became a medal sport again in 1988. A single-elimination tournament determines medal placings. The top 16 players are seeded in singles, the top eight teams in doubles. In 1896, 1900, 1904, 1988, and 1992, semfinal losers shared bronze medals. In all other years, they've had a playoff match for the medal. Top of page Year Gold Final Silver Bronze John Pius Boland, GBR/IRL Dionysios Kasdaglis, EGY Konstantinos Paspatis, GRE

Extractions: The Olympic Games as we know them have been around for over 100 years. But did you know that the Games go back to a tradition that began in the eighth century B.C.? This article picks up where Part I left off. Read on to find out about the end of the original Olympic Games, and how they came back, better than ever, after 1,500 years! After Rome conquered Greece in 146 B.C., the Olympics diminished in importance and religious significance. Many athletes became interested only in winning money. In A.D. 393, the Emperor Theodosius I banned the Games because they had declined in quality. Over time, people forgot about the Olympics, and no Games were held for more than 1,500 years. Then, in 1875, a group of German archaeologists came upon the ruins of the Stadium of Olympia. Seeing the ruins inspired Baron Pierre de Coubertin, a French educator, to organize a modern international Olympics. He believed that individuals needed to test their athletic skills against others.

The game of tennis dates back to the Stone Age, when man first used clubs to hit rocks, but the French gave the sport isn't modern look and name. Derived from the French word "tenez," meaning "take it" or "play," the country's influence goes back as far as the 10th century. The game originally was played with mounds of dirt separating both sides of the court and a rope chord served as the net or out of bounds. The tennis racket started its evolution in the 1500s, going from all-wood to a newer version with a wooden handle and sheep gut serving as a head. The sport became the national pastime in France as Paris already had over 1,000 courts. The next major landmark for the sport wouldn't come until the 1850s, when a court was mapped for the outdoors on grass. Major Walter Wingfield developed new rules for the sport fifteen years later, where only the server could score and a seven-foot net divided the court.

Mosaics and drawings from Middle Eastern civilizations and Pompeii show man swimming in a dog stroke. Greeks held swimming in a high regard as well, so much so that men of the ancient times often considered others less worthy if they could not run or swim. A man was considered uneducated by Plato if he could not swim. But it was an 1844 race in London, England that displayed swimming close to what we know today. Thanks to England's Swimming Society, several American Indians were brought over for the race and dominated the competition using windmill strokes resembling today's freestyle. Despite the Indians' advanced style, the English still relied on the breaststroke - the stroke mainly used by Captain Matthew Webb when he became the first to swim across the English Channel in 1875.
