Extractions: Thursday, January 18, 2001 Printer friendly version Thanks to grants from the Tennessee Higher Education Commission, UT researchers will have a chance to share their expertise with educators and students in Tennessee public schools. THEC awarded three separate research teams the Eisenhower Professional Development Grant to improve K-12 learning in mathematics, science and reading. The federal grants are disbursed through a competitive state-run selection process and will provide the much-needed funding for teacher information sessions and in-classroom projects to be given throughout the state. One such program is Jerome Grant and Paris Lambdin's Insects in the Classroom workshop, which shows rural elementary and junior high science teachers how to use insects in teaching agriculture and interactive biology. Lambdin says the $29,959 given to the program will go towards providing travel and take-home materials for visiting instructors. The overall goal is to transfer information to rural counties that wouldn't otherwise have it at their disposal. That would be impossible without the Eisenhower Grant, Lambdin says.

Tennesseans pay the least in state and local taxes - and spend less than all but two states A new report from NEA Research shows once more that Tennesseans are not overburdened with taxes. In fact, says TEA Manager of Research Graham Greeson, What we have is an investment problem. The amazing thing," Greeson noted, is that despite our miserable level of spending on our schools, our students consistently rank at or near the national average on all the standardized tests. Our teachers and schools are giving us far more than were paying for in results. To read the full report click here

For example, transferring students must obtain permission from the receiving district's school board to ensure that the transfer does not harm state desegregation efforts. A provision in state law allows the local boards of education to conduct choice programs as part of the state's Basic Education funding reform package passed in 1992.
