Mr. Michael Semore (1999), Mrs. Cathy Donaldson (2001), and Mrs. Patti Sanders (2002) were recognized for their expertise in the classroom as well as general professional involvement. The Don Jenkins Award, presented annually by TCTE, is designed to focus attention on teaching excellence and best practices in education. Candidates must submit detailed essays about their philosophy of teaching, extracurricular activities, professional development, and educational issues. Additionally, colleagues and supervisors must submit letters of recommendations. "Recipients of the Don Jenkins Award represent the rich diversity of education in Tennessee," says Mrs. Carolyn Phipps, executive director of TCTE. "They teach children from different backgrounds and needs, but they have one thing in common: a passion for helping their students learn. By honoring teachers, we focus our attention on the importance of teaching and on the talented and dedicated teachers throughout Tennessee." Mrs. Donaldson, division leader for Letters and Languages, teaches eleventh grade English and Advanced Placement English Language and Composition. Mrs. Sanders, the adviser for Harding's yearbook, The Shield, teaches tenth grade English (Honors), twelfth grade English, and journalism. Mr. Semore, past president of the Memphis-Shelby County Teachers of English, teaches twelfth grade English and Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition; he is in his twenty-seventh year in the classroom. Both Mrs. Donaldson and Mr. Semore serve as readers for the College Board's Advanced Placement readings. Mrs. Sanders serves on the Walsworth Publishing Company's Yearbook Advisory Council.
