Extractions: Air Force News Service Features ATLANTA - The Olympic spectacle of opening ceremonies was another showcase for the skill and professionalism of Air Force people who do their jobs in the air and on the ground. As appropriate for the 100th birthday of the modern Olympics, the opening night was an exciting extravaganza with people shouting "U-S-A, U-S-A," as the Thunderbirds streaked overhead. An estimated crowd of 83,000 watched the six F-16 's flash their colors. International Olympic officials said as many as 3.5 billion watched the opening ceremony on TV. With a record 197 countries participating, the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games is the largest peacetime event of this century. Don Cloud, an Atlanta native and Air Force retiree, boasted, "It's great to see the Thunderbirds again. The spirit of this place just feels great ... it's thrilling." Standing next to many of the gate keepers around the Olympic stadium were Air Force and Air Guard security people. Olympic security officials said the military presence at the games is to "boost" an already standing security team of 30,000. Security for the opening ceremony was very tight, with Air Force security police helping with the processing of people through X-ray machines and metal detectors. The ceremony went off without any credible threats, but the SP's said there were a lot of butterflies in their stomachs.

Extractions: October 05, 2000 Some like to think of the Olympic Games as the non-political antidote to geopolitical strife. Not so. On the official, bureaucratic level, ideology and the Olympics are becoming increasingly, and ever more ridiculously, intertwined. Take the distribution of 51 condoms to each competitor in Sydney. "The contraceptives," reported the London newspaper the Mirror, "were issued in a variety of styles, fruit flavors, and textures including one called rough rider." Why 51 and not 49, or 52? Because, silly, the Games spanned 17 days and the athletes needed a daily regimen of three. This politically correct stunt became fodder for jokes, and deservingly so. Jay Leno quipped that "the last time anyone was given 51 condoms [was] when Clinton visited the Miss America pageant. Remember, Puerto Rico was there." But handing out contraception under such circumstances presumably, most residents of the Olympic Village didnt know one another before they moved in makes a statement about condoned sexual behavior which would make Hugh Hefner very proud indeed. Then there was the joint appearance at the opening ceremonies of the South Korean and North Korean teams, marching behind the flag a blue outline of the Korean peninsula on a field of white of neither country. The crowd of 110,000 at Stadium Australia cheered and applauded heartily, and Olympic boss Juan Antonio Samaranch declared that the march-in symbolized "friendship" and "peace."
Extractions: By The Headbunny Back to the Essays I want to like the Olympics, I really do. I try to care when one of the ugliest men in the world in a sport no one cares about takes the front page while there are rumors that people are taking recalled Firestone tires and reselling them. I try to care when the US men's basketball team beats another third world country by 50 points. I try to care when a huge store tells me that they support our Olympic athletes and that should make me want to buy my next two-by-four from them. I try to care when the opening ceremonies are full of sound and fury, but like the games, signify nothing. It's time to admit that the spirit of the games is dead and buried, allowing a shinier, sexier, richer version to rise. Whatever honor there was in winning a medal for your country has now been obliterated by the fact that a gold medal now ensures a multi-million dollar endorsement deal and a 'profile in courage' biopic. Of course, there are still some athletes who train the old-fashioned way and fight incredible odds to get to the games but there are just as many athletes churned out of factories and groomed for competition. Instead of pride, there is a sense of resentment. Instead of hard work and clean living we learn a country might be using every form of steroid they can to make that lifter who can break the world record, then discard him or her, not caring that they'll be sterile, prone to injury and their DNA will resemble something from an MC Escher drawing years later. But of course, they'll have that medal to sleep with and feel better about.

Extractions: Text Taken from Funk and Wagnalls Encylopedia TEAM HANDBALL , a court or field game with characteristics similar to both basketball and soccer. Today, the game is played mostly as an indoor court game by two teams of 7 players each. In its early development, it was sometimes played as a field game by two teams of 11 players each. Team handball should not be confused with Handball, a different indoor court game in which players alternate in hitting a small rubber ball against a wall with their hands. Court and Equipment Team handball is played on a court that is 40 m (131.2 ft) long and 20 m (65.6 ft) wide. The court is larger than a basketball court, but is sometimes shortened when space is limited. There is a goal at each end of the court that measures 3 m (9.8 ft) wide by 2 m (6.6 ft) high. The net attached to the goalposts and crossbar is 1 m (3.3 ft) deep at the goal base. There is a goal area, semicircular in shape, that is about 15 m (about 49.2 ft) wide along the baseline and extends to a flattened arc 6 m (19.7 ft) from the goal. The ball is an inflated, 32-panel leather ball. The men's ball is 58 to 60 cm (22.8 to 23.6 in) in circumference with a weight of 425 to 480 g (15.0 to 16.9 oz). For women, the ball is 54 to 56 cm (21.3 to 22.1 in) in circumference and weighs from 325 to 400 g (11.5 to 14.1 oz). Uniform shirts and shorts are the same color, but the goalkeepers must wear different colors from both their teammates and opponents. No jewelry is allowed.

How it works Team handball will appear in the Olympics for the 18th time as a men's competition and seventh for the women. Matches will take place at the Binnie Pavilion and The Dome. Handball combines elements of soccer (the layout, but not the size, of the playing surface), lacrosse (players must continuously move with the ball and shoot only from behind a designated line) and basketball (there is dribbling, quick passing and picks). There are two 30-minute halves.

Extractions: A history of Handball Early History Handball is one of the worlds oldest sports. The sport was in a variety of guises until its present form today. A ball game was described by Home in 'The Odyssey" in the following way: "And Alcinous commanded the courageous Halius to dance alone with Laodamus, since no one ventured to dance with them. They immediately took hold of the beautiful ball which Polybus had skillfully made out of of purple wool. One of them bending right back, hurled the ball high up into the shadowy clouds; then the other leapt high from the ground and deftly caught it before his feet touched the ground again. And after trying to throw the ball upwards, they danced floatingly to and fro on the bountiful earth, frequently moving from one position to another." A relief on a gravestone dated to be 600BC was found at the city wall of Athens, depicting the above event. According to the writings of the Roman doctor, Claudius Galenus (130-200AD), the Romans had a handball game called 'Harpaston". In the Middle Ages, maids of honour and knights were keen ball game players. The rules of the game were to pass the ball, which was often adorned with ribbons and bells, from one place to another. The minnesingers called the Summer ball the first game. This was sung by Walther von der Vogelwide (1170-1230), who called them "Cath Ball Games", forerunner to the present day game of handball.
