Extractions: Tasmanian Devils These young Tasmanian devils are showing their aggressive nature. It is believed that introduced red foxes never became established on Tasmania, as they have on Australia's mainland, because of Tasmanian devils and the now extinct Tasmanian tiger. Although 'devils' cannot kill an adult fox, fox pups are likely quite vulnerable. Return to The Australian and Tasmanian Animal Photo Quiz Return to the Main Homepage

Extractions: food The world's largest surviving carnivorous marsupial, the devil has a thick-set, squat build, with a relatively large, broad head and short, thick tail. The fur is mostly or wholly black, but white markings often occur on the rump and chest. Body size also varies greatly, depending on the diet and habitat. Adult males are usually larger than adult females. Large males weigh up to 12 kg, and stand about 30 cm high at the shoulder. Distribution Devils once occurred on mainland Australia, with fossils having been found widely. Today, however the devil is only found in Tasmania. It is believed the devil became extinct on the mainland some 600 years ago - before European settlement of the continent. The dingo, which was brought into Australia by Aboriginal people, is believed to have ousted the devil from the mainland. Today, devils are particularly common in some north, east and central districts where some farming practices (e.g. rangeland sheep grazing) provide much carrion. Tasmanian devils can be seen in many rural and wilderness areas by slowly driving at night along secondary roads. Devils are readily seen at the Narawntapu (formerly Asbestos Range) National Park, Mt. William National Park, Cradle Mt. National Park, the Arthur River and highland lakes area. Look for them a few hours after sunset. Habitat Devils are widespread in Tasmania from the coast to the mountains. They live in coastal heath, open dry sclerophyll forest, and mixed sclerophyll-rainforest - in fact, almost anywhere they can hide and find shelter by day, and find food at night. Extractions: Carnivorous and scavenging marsupial now restricted to Tasmania. The animal was formerly widely distributed in Australia as well but, because farmers believed that it killed large numbers of livestock and poultry, it was exterminated there. The Tasmanian devil is actually a very inefficient killer, and eats mostly carrion. It is 52 to 80 cm (20 to 31 in) in head and body length, with a tail 23 to 30 cm (9 to 12 in) long, and weighs 4.1 to 11.8 kg (9 to 26 lb). Its pelt is blackish or brownish, except for white patches commonly present on the throat or other parts. It stays in burrows or in dense brush during the day and, at night, preys on rodents, lizards, wallabies, and other small animals, but are also known to scavenge on dead animals of all kinds and devour anything which attacks them, including other Devils. Tasmanian Devils have some of the strongest jaws out of any animal, and generally eat the entirety of their prey. One time a family of Devils were found to have eaten a horse and left only the skull and tail.

Extractions: TASMANIAN DEVIL History Farmers used to believe that Tasmanian Devils killed large numbers of their livestock and poultry; so they started killing them until there were none left on the mainland. Now Tasmanian Devils are found only in Tasmania. Location and Habitat Tasmanian Devils live in forests or coastal scrublands. They will find shelter in hollow logs or dens lined with twigs and leaves. Feeding Habits Tasmanian Devils are carnivorous animals. They mostly scavenge for food, but they hunt as well. The mother will nurse her young while they are still small enough for her pouch. Then they will feed themselves. Breeding A female visits a male's den for two weeks at a time. The gestation period is thirty-one days. A female has two to four babies at a time. Mothers care for their young. They carry them when they're young in her backwards opening pouch. If she lets her guard down for one second, another adult may eat them. The mother stops caring for them when they are too big for her pouch. Unusual Behavior Tasmanian Devils scream if anything threatens them. Let's just say they don't get along with their neighbors.

Tasmanian Devil tasmanian Devil Despite its ferocious reputation, the little devils have provento be easily tamed and, indeed, have become affectionate and playful http://www.nature.ca/notebooks/english/tasdevil.htm
Extractions: This tough little carnivore resembles, in some respects, a small bear. Found today only on the island of Tasmania, south of Australia, it is still fairly common there and protected by the government. Weighing between 6 and 10 kg, it received its name from the early white settlers on whose poultry and other small stock it often preyed. In the wild, its main food supply consists of small wallabies and kangaroos, birds, lizards and probably frogs and crayfish. Equipped with powerful jaws, it is not hesitant to attack animals much larger than itself. When excited, the pale ears gradually turn red. Despite its ferocious reputation, the little devils have proven to be easily tamed and, indeed, have become affectionate and playful companions. They are very clean, fond of water, and love to bask in the sun.

Extractions: For use: Sunday, August 10, 2000 and thereafter Business Bestiary "Tasmanian Devils" by Michael Finley In 1994, Michael Treacy became the hottest business author of the decade with The Discipline of Market Leaders . In that book, he and co-author Fred Weirsema described three "value disciplines" that all businesses must somehow incorporate into their strategies. The book shot to the top of the best-sellers list, as businesses scrambled to incorporate his ideas. But this story is about a remark Michael Treacy made in passing at a Masters Forum session in Minneapolis not long ago, about the age of change we live in. "I began my career as a proponent of technology-driven strategy, back in the 1980s," he said. "I believed computers would change everything. When they didn't change nearly enough, at least right away, I soured on the so-called technology revolution, and re-focused on the marketing-driven strategic notions outlined in The Discipline of Market Leaders. "But now it dawns on me that the revolution I gave up on has occurred without me.
