Everyday more and more people forego getting more traditional pets like cats and dogs to purchase lovable tasmanian devils. Although Tasmanian Devils (known as devils from this point on) have gotten a bad rap from the cute but destructive Loony Toons character Taz, they are really some of the best and most lovable pets anyone can have. Let's find out a little more about our new, furry, friends shall we? Devils are the size of small dogs and they are noted for several physical traits. They have such incredibly powerful jaws that they're known as the "rotweiller of Tasmania." Tasmanian Devils are capable of biting through plastic, bone, and even steel if startled. They also have a luxurious, oily coat. Although their coat is gorgeous, you may want to be prepared for what Tasmanian natives call "ooklaboocha." It's a dark, slimy, dank smelling, grease like trail that devils on everything they touch. Furthermore, devils also can't stand water. Devils have been known to go into day long "psychotic rages" when forced to take baths. This is understandable because any devils that come into contact with water almost immediately break out with huge, green, festering , rashes that takes months to heal. During this time, devils grow very confused and anxious and are known to endlessly run in circles and smash into walls at full speed.

The four enjoy wading in their waterfall ponds and basking on rocky escarpments inside their matching enclosures. Tasmanian devils are the largest carnivorous marsupials alive today. They assumed the title when the last thylacine, or Tasmanian tiger, died in captivity in 1936. Today they are only found in Tasmania, but fossil evidence shows that devils once lived on mainland Australia. Scientists suspect that dingoes, which are an introduced species, drove both devils and thylacines to extinction on the mainland. Although Tasmanian devils have been depicted as brutish killing machines in cartoons, real Tasmanian devils are scavengers, not hunters. They use their sharp teeth, heavy molars and powerful jaws to rip through hide and crush bone and gristle of dead animals that they find while foraging. Tasmanian devils have an excellent sense of smell, which they use to locate carrion at night. Though solitary by nature, many individuals will converge on a single carcass to feed. A group of feeding devils will growl, snarl and screech at one another to establish dominance, creating quite the spectacle!

They usually have a patch of white fur on the throat and on the lower back near the beginning of the tail. The Tasmanian Devil's body is from 20 to 31 inches long and its tail is from 9 to 12 inches long. Females weigh from 9 to15 pounds. Males weigh from 15 to 26 pounds. Tasmanian Devils usually eat carrion, because they don't move very fast. This is good for the environment because they clean up the dead animals that are lying around. Sometimes though, the Tasmanian Devil does kill small animals. Tasmanian Devils are one of the rare kinds of animals that are cannibals. Tasmanian Devils are very loud. They scream a lot. When something comes near them they sometimes will turn from a side view to a front view so quickly that they appear to be turning in circles when they are really not.

Being nocturnal the devil is rarely seen of a day, it roams freely at night and can be heard more often than seen, the blood curdling screams are usually associated with a number of devils feeding at the same site, and one could be excused for expecting to see a creature of monolithic proportions. It was these blood curdling screams that were first heard by the European settlers, who named the animal "the devil" accordingly. The cartoon character of the same name is shown as an uncontrollable and unstoppable, destructive spinning mass, with attitude!. The question is, "does it really spin? " All reports to date, of spinning Tasmanian Devils, indicate that a common factor exists with witnesses, all registered an increased blood alcohol level. Sightings early in the evening reveal controlled pirouettes; late evening sightings refer to numerous devils spinning completely out of control. It is unreported if spinning occurs during a zero blood alcohol period, therefor it is recommended that all with an interest in the Tasmanian Devil congregate at a predetermined location with me and form their own opinion.!!

Extractions: The powerful jaws of the animal are capable of totally devouring its prey, bones and all. The Tasmanian devil is the world's largest carnivorous marsupial, the devil has a thick-set, squat build, with a relatively large, broad head and short, thick tail. The fur is mostly or wholly black, but white markings often occur on the rump and chest. Body size also varies greatly, depending on the diet and habitat. Adult males are usually larger than adult females. Large males weigh up to 12 kg, and stand about 30 cm high at the shoulder. The devil used to populate the Australian mainland but was probably wiped out by the dingo. Fossils of the devil are still found on the mainland but the animal now only survives in Tasmania. The Tasmanian devils are common in many regions of Tasmania and are often seen feeding on road kills and other carrion. Tasmanian devils mate in March with the young born approximately 20 days later. Two to four young are born with usually only 2 or three surviving. The backward facing pouch has four teats with the female nursing the young in the pouch for up to 4 months. The young are weaned at about 5 months and kept in a simple den when not in the pouch. They live up to 8 years. The Tasmanian devils do hunt and kill animals however mainly scavenge. Their diet can include sheep and cattle carcasses and road killed wallabies. Other animals eaten include reptiles, birds, insects and rodents.
