4-0 out of 5 stars Could be improved, but well worth it!
The premise etc behind this book is excellent. However, the many black and white photos tell the likely reader of book very little. This should not take away though from the solid advice, work-out plans, bits and pieces of commonsense training, diet etc, and the seasonal/periodicity themes that make this book very worthwhile.Although I have not the experience nor credentials that Mr. Smith and many of you have, I recommend taking the themes of this book and expanding in more detail, and ditching the numerous b&w still photos that really tell an exerciser little about the movements. If anything, provide photos of important do's and don'ts of the exercises, but don't half-change the movement with a photo to fill the pages.Other than this opinion, I found the book an excellent addition to my fitness literature and plan on incorporating its ideas into my own routines.

2-0 out of 5 stars book
The routines in this book are soo random and lengthy a simpler more effective approach could be used.his navy seal book was better

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Workout!
I wanted to find a workout that I could stick with all year that is challenging and takes my body to new heights in terms of physical strength, endurance, and agility.Though I've only been on the program for a few weeks, I can already see these three aspects changing.

The workout starts normally enough, but gets tough fast.Fortunately Stew has made it flexible enough so that anyone can do it: from the hardcore wanna-be Navy SEAL to the dedicated guy who wants to get in shape.Complete with a full explanation of exercises, the full year-round routine, and even nutritional advice, Stew's book is a great find for those who want to find one good exercise program to stick with for a long time!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Must have for 35yr olds with prior exercise experience who want to get back in shape.

5-0 out of 5 stars Effective and Flexible
I've had this book since it came out and I am still recommending it to people. The work-outs can be adjusted for different fitness levels but they will take you as far as you want to go. You can't really outgrow this book.
I like the way it is broken up into phases- strength, cardio- this is better than doing the same mix throughout the year. Stretching and flexibility are not forgotten either.
My beginner friends liked the introduction to pyramiding reps (a good trick to increase puul-up/push-up reps)and the fact that you don't need to be in a gym every day. Quite a lot can be done outdoors or at home.

I run across very few other work out schedules that can be used for such a range of fitness levels. It isn't gimicky or sport specific, it's for all around fitness. ... Read more

A nutritionist and an educator explain what to feed growing kids ages one to eighteen, including those with diabetes, food allergies, and AD/HD, to develop their maximum physical and mental potential. Meal plans and recipes showcase specific brain stimulating foods along with practical suggestions for preparing and serving brain foods (including snacks) that kids will actually eat. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Had high hopes but...
I was really hoping this book would meet my expectations.Through the years, I have always tried to gather any information I can about getting the most nutritional bang for my buck when it comes to feeding my often picky eaters.Because my kids don't always eat as much healthy food as I would like them to, I try to maximize by focusing on whole "superfoods" (wild salmon, blueberries, sweet potatoes, eggs, spinach, etc.) when I can.

The book opens up with a story about a family who is skipping breakfast and always eating fast food because they are so busy. The authors may think this represents most of America, but I (and probably others who are buying this book) don't eat this way.My kids always eat breakfast, and fast food, while not taboo in our house, certainly isn't a way of life!

I was really hoping this book would build on the knowledge that I have already have.Instead, I found much of the information to be confusing and conflicting. In chapter 1, the authors list the best and worst foods by category. For proteins, porterhouse steak and QUAIL of all things are listed in the "Best" category, but salmon is not even mentioned!Under the list of "worsts" are baking soda and baking powder, but many recipes in the back use these!"Diet" drinks and sweeteners are naturally listed as "worst" but again, there is a recipe that calls for sugar free jello! Moreover, there are a couple of actually very healthy foods that the authors say to avoid, such as coconut oil and AVOCADOS!!!Virgin coconut oil is excellent brain food (all baby formulas contain it--although I breastfed) and avocados, with their healthy fats and over 19 nutrients are as good for the brain as blueberries!

I was hoping at least the recipe section would have some new recipes that incorporated healthy foods in different ways.I hardly call Ants on a Log an exciting, let alone original recipe.Barbeque Sloppy Joes contain liquid smoke (can't be good for you!) and is a very basic recipe. And probably most surprising of all, more than a couple recipes call for either refrigerated biscuit dough, crescent rolls, or cookie dough. All of these contain partially-hydrogenated oils and artifical flavors, colors, and preservatives. One recipe even calls for Trix cereal (after the authors have said sugary cereals are bad for brain function!)Another recipe calls for 4 cups miniature marshmallows.I am not one of those parents who never give their kids sweets and never let them eat sugar cereals, but I do try to be sensible about them.My kids do eat more junk than I'd like. However, when I buy a book about "Brain Foods" I expect it to be genuine and contain information and recipes where the focus really is on nutrition--not on fun.Anyone can take a bag of marshmallows and make something taste good. What kid isn't going to eat Trix if you give it to him?

Sorry to say, I am not impressed. What I was looking for was solid information on what foods really are the BEST for brain function, not recipes that make healthy foods unhealthy.I am sending the book back for a refund.I have found more useful information surfing the internet. There are many other books out there that do a much better job at overall nutrition.Food for Tots and Superfoods for Super Kids are a few I can think of off-hand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, especially in today's age of rampant child obesity and media glorification of unhealthy foods.
Brain Food: Recipes for Success in School, Sports, and Life is more than a cookbook - it's a guide for parents to helping kids eat balanced diets of good nutrition. A blend of solid parenting advice and the latest nutritional science, Brain Food offers guidelines for preparing food for children of all ages, what attitudes to expect children to have toward food and how to instill healthy eating habits, recommended recipes for all three meals and sample meal plans, and much more. The suggested recipes include delicacies ranging from "Cereal Trail Mix" to "Cheese Spinach Noodles", "Barbecue Turkey Sloppy Joes", and "Peanut Ginger Pasta Salad." Each recipe also lists its prep time, and basic nutrition information concerning calories, fat calories, and percentages of fat, protein, and carbohydrates per serving. Highly recommended, especially in today's age of rampant child obesity and media glorification of unhealthy foods. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The use of the foot as a weapon revealed
Spectacular kicks are the mainstay of many action movies, yet in reality they like throwing seem to be mysterious to most people. The Foot-Fighting Manual for Self-Defense and Sport Karate answers what you want to know about kicking in one clear easy to understand book.It provides everything you need to get started learning to do kicks.Provided are conditioning exercises, fighting stances, answers to common questions about foot fighting, safety considerations, foot positions for kicking, beginning kicks, intermediate kicks and advanced kicks. The book helps build the reader's skill progressively through its lessons that are very easy to understand. Each kick first has a general explanation followed by learning steps with matching pictures. The Foot-Fighting Manual by Fred Neff is a well done work and I strongly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Footfighting Manual Impressive
Fred Neff's Footfighting Manual presents with specificity a great variety of foot maneuvers that can be used in fighting. The book sets a proper foundation with basic stretching exercises for conditioning and then goes on to breakdown the kicks in progressive order of their difficulty. Each kick is taught through a series of learning steps with accompanying pictures.Having studied karate now for over three years, I was very impressed with the way the author organized and presented the vital area of kicking. It has helped me not only learn some new foot maneuvers, but improve the kicks that I earlier learned. The manual is simple enough for a beginner to learn foot maneuvers, yet has enough depth to continue to be useful as a person continues his or her study. It is an excellent book to use as a resource to improve kicking techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars Running Is For Me send all the right messages
While looking for the book Mysterious Persons In History by Minnesota lawyer Fred Neff at a bookstore, I happened upon Running Is For Me.This is another book by Fred Neff, who is a lawyer from Edina, Minnesota which I thought my niece might enjoy. This book on running sends all the right messages to the reader. It tells the story of a young boy and girl who are friends and practice running together.Their mentors are a grown man and woman. The four share their running adventures together. The theme and composition of this story by author Fred Neff is excellent. Here we see both genders getting along well as equals and sharing experiences as they grow in skill and friendship. It also shows how children and adults from different genders can share fun activities like running together.I really like the interplay between the characters of the story. This same wholesomeness is reminescent of what I have read in other books by attorney Fred Neff of Minnesota. This Minnesota lawyer Fred Neff adds a human touch to his books that shows great sensitivity.Reading many of author Fred Neff's books led me to want to find out more about him.Fred Neff, who is an attorney in Edina, Minnesota has written books that at times have a unique mix of humanism, logic, justice orientation, law, physical culture, philosopy and martial arts. It is true that sometimes an author reveals much about his own background in his writing; author Fred Neff has been a secondary teacher in a public school system in the twin cities of Minnesota and an instructor at a number of colleges such as the University of Minnesota, University of Wisconsin, Hamline University and Inver Hills College. Later Fred Neff attorney acted as a prosecutor and then a criminal defense counsel. Fred Neff lawyer of Edina, Minnesota has handled discrimination and fraud cases. In addition, Fred Neff was on the board of directors of an insurance company. Edina Minnesota lawyer Fred Neff has experience in criminal and civil litigation. What I read about Fred Neff showed me that the breadth of his experience comes through in the humanism and desire for justice and fair play reflected in his writings.Gender equality and respect for others shines through in Running Is For Me and makes it a book that can be enjoyed by male and female readers. This book by Fred Neff is so good that I plan on buying another copy to give as a gift to my nephew.

5-0 out of 5 stars Platinum Rating for Running Book
In high school and in college I participated in running events.I have continued to run almost daily since graduating from college.Up until recently, neither my boy nor girl showed any interest in sports and refused to take a run with me.While rummaging through some books that were for sale, I happened upon two storybooks for children by Fred Neff. One was the story of a mother and daughter who shared an interest in running and the other is about a girl who takes Karate lessons. The storybook entitled Running Is For Me was intriguing.I bought that book for my children to see if it would make one or both of them willing to try running. They thoroughly enjoyed reading the book.I was delighted when at dinner they discussed taking a run with me.Since then, we take short runs as a family. My children liked the running book so much that I bought a copy of the other storybook called Karate Is For Me by the same writer.Again, they loved the book.I went on to get them other books by Fred Neff such as his Basic Karate Handbook and Lessons From the Japanese Masters. Both my children are now taking karate lessons and are active in other sports.Their involvment in karate has really built their self-confidence.I was able to locate another copy of Karate Is For Me and sent it to my niece as a present. The book similarly led to her involvment in karate as well.I love the story in Running Is For Me and the book's ability to spark children's interest in sports. It gets a platinum rating from me. ...
