I ordered this book 2 weeks prior to a 5 week summer class. Going into the last week of class I still hadn't received the book, so I emailed the seller. He responded that he had totally forgot to mail it out. I asked for a refund instead, and he never responded. He just sent the book and hoped I'd forget about the refund. Fields has written an important book that tackles the question of why girls and women remain excluded from many popular sports.Field argues that women's response to their exclusion from contact sports is a good barometer for how they are responding to their exclusion from other aspects of American society.She provides a super chronology and detailed analysis of numerous lawsuits brought by girls and women demanding the right to participate in contact sports.She also describes the evolution of Title IX and its impact (or lack of impact) on the issue.Fields concludes that the primary barrier to girls and women playing contact sports is cultural, not legal.For decades Americans have seen contact sports as a means for men to demonstrate their ability to protect women and to wield power.Fields writes:"The exclusion of female from contact sports was symbolic of the exclusion of females from power." As women challenged their exclusion from other male-dominated social, political and economic positions, it was natural for them to demand access to contact sports.Legal barriers have fallen, but cultural barriers remain.This book will particularly appeal to scholars and female athletes of all ages.

Prompts far too many questions
Female Gladiators, part legal and social history, documents the beginnings of Title IX. Moreover she examines the schoolgirls who filed lawsuits using Title IX in order to compete in contact sports and the various communities that attempted to resisit female involvement in contact sports. .Although not fully indicative of the atmosphere surrounding Title IX and gender inequality and prompting far more questions than it actually answers, the result remains a decent contribution to gender and sports studies that historians may want to examine.
She ignores the monster Title IX has created and the detrimental effects its implementation has had on male athletics. Also some of her contentions seem quite speculative, particularly in regards to boxing. She ignores the fact that many may view female boxers as a spectacle rather than a true sporting event. She attempts to address this issue but also seems equally determined to discount its importance.
Just as problematic is the apparent naiveté Fields holds for the changes in the American sporting landscape due to Title IX.She seems to believe that cultural change should occur far swifter than it has.Fields asserts, especially concerning football, that opposition to female participation remains very high.For the author, this appears a travesty.Cultural changes transpire slowly, especially in sporting practices.Fields, however, ignores this concept and despite the massive progress Title IX has made seemingly believes that football, America's true sporting passion, should be far more open to female participation than it is.
Fields could have but chose not to ascertain the motivations of those that challenged discriminatory sporting practices.Why did girls want to play these sports?Did they want to play with the boys because they had grown up playing with the boys?Were they pushed into playing or attempting to participate in certain sports by overzealous fathers?Did they wish to garner attention?While these questions may not be entirely pertinent to her foremost focus, they would offer a better understanding of the individuals challenging unfair sporting practices and thus furthering Title IX's enforcement.Moreover, Fields ignores the (arguable) harm Title IX has brought to male athletics.Forced to provide equitable scholarships across the athletic board, many universities choose to drop certain male sports rather than begin new female sports.Again, this is not the primary point of her work, but it certainly cannot be ignored in any Title IX discussion.Despite its flaws and weaknesses, the text does a good job documenting the beginnings of Title IX.Moreover, the work illustrates how Title IX eventually enforced equal sporting access for females and manifested into the nightmare that many male athletic directors continue to fear and resent at present. ... This is an excellent text for a comprehensive look at sports law. Professor Wong has made some excllent changes to his already successful Essentials text. The addition of five new chapters (including Antitrust, Labor, IP, Business: Structures, Tax and Employment, and Disabilities) from the second edition demonstrate that Wong is on the cutting edge of the intersection of law and sports. Very information book. It basically details numerous sports law cases, and provides the reader a look into how cases in sports have shaped the landscape of current major sports in usa. authoritative, thorough and engagingly written
I certainly can't claim to bave read every word in this *very big* casebook but I have been through it enough to know that it is very, very good.

I have been an active practitioner in this area for almost 20 years. I work among other practitioners who are also very experienced. This book is constantly being "borrowed" because we all find it so useful.

(In the interest of full disclosure I should mention that I am a friend of one author and an acquaintance of the other, and that my name appears in the acknowledgements. But truly, it's a terrific book.)
