5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for little ones with an interest in spiders!
My niece absolutely LOVES spiders, and I purchased this book for her 4th birthday.I wanted something that provided real photos of spiders but presented them in a story-like format appropriate for younger children. This book turned out to be the perfect choice:each page features a different type of spider and 2-3 lines of text describing habits of spiders and/or asking simple, interactive questions (e.g. "What kind of animal is a spider?").The only thing missing from this book was the actual NAMES of the spiders--my niece is old enough that she was curious about the different types of spiders and kept asking for their names.Otherwise, this is an excellent book for older pre-school aged children, and I rate it 4 1/2 stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great stuff for 6 year old boys (and non-squeamish moms)
My 6 year old is just beginning to read & chose this from his school library because he's fascinated with all things bug-like.He enjoyed reading this (with help from me on the big words) and was pulled in by the vibrant photography and grossed out by some of the facts (the egg sacs in particular). I asked him the questions presented in the story but he was too worn out to answer them.Still, we both learned lots of interesting new things about spiders.Did you know that some spiders have 8 eyes?I've seen the picture to prove it! Another highlight was seeing a close-up of an intricate zig-zag spider web & another very messy web.Wow, it'll almost make me think twice before shooing the critters out of my house & destroying their webs.I'd recommend this for a 6 year old boy or girl interested in bugs. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The King of Scotland.
This short book tells about an unconfirmed legend of history. Robert the Bruce has united the Scotts against the English but has been beaten six different times. The armies scatter and The Bruce takes shelter in a cave. Bone-weary and left with little hope, Robert the Bruce considers surrendering. However, a little spider catches his eye.The spider is attempting to weave its web, but is struggling. Six times the spider attempts to swing from one end of the cave to the other and fails. Robert the Bruce tells the spider to give up, but then the spider tries a seventh time and succeeds. This brings hope to the weary king that he, too will be successful. He leaves the cave and gathers the clans again. Sometime later, the Scotts meet the English on the field of Bannockburn and though they are severely outnumbered, the Scottish beat the English and Scotland is free.
This is a great little story and the illustrations that accompany it have an impressionist feel to them. Great book to read to children familiar with William Wallace and also is a good book introducing them to Scottish history. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ideal for new Floridians & visitors unnerved by 12 ft. spider webs
So, it's your first visit to Florida? You take your drink (with or without the tiny umbrella) out to the veranda and, while admiring the palm trees and tropical breezes you look up, and notice... hey, what is that?A spider web 15 feet across?! And, what's that huge leggy thing in the center?!Shades of Bilbo Baggins; it must be one of Shelob's off-spring! Or, if you're of that younger generation and into Harry Potter, it may be an agramantula!Welcome to the tropics, where the some spiders actually do catch and eat the birds. You've probably just met your first golden orb weaver (a.k.a. the banana spider, although they aren't "quite" that large).

This book's team of authors and editors have assembled a book full of large and gorgeous color photographs, detailed life histories, and helpful identification tips about some of Florida's most under-appreciated wildlife. If you are new to Florida, your first encounter with the three-inch long golden orb weaver hanging in a web that might be more than twelve-feet across can be quiet a shock.Or, how about when a huge black scorpion marched across the carpet between you and the TV, apparently looking for your cat.

Well, help is at hand. This inexpensive book is colorful and entertaining enough to hold almost anyone's interest, and the authors make a sincere effort to dispel the unwarranted fears that many people have about spiders and their relatives.

If you are a long-time Florida resident, but with a new interest in spiders, this book's superb photography simplifies identification of the truly dangerous, and tells you where to find them, how to get the less desireable species to look elsewhere for a homestead, and introduces you to the multitude of beneficial spider species.

The authors also throw in some news about 8-legged immigrants. Just as Florida is now home to pythons from Burma, starlings from Europe, and pepper trees from Brazil; Florida's busy ports have been bringing spiders from other continents to our state. We now have thriving populations of tarantulas from Mexico and South America. And, lucky us, the brown recluse has moved south with migrating retirees and is now established in Florida as well.

"Florida's Fabulous Spiders" contains answers to all the questions the average resident or visitor is likely to ask about spiders. The authors provide some relief for those with arachnophobic tendencies (the vast majority of Florida spiders are very reluctant to bite humans, and of those that might, fewer than a half-dozen especially secretive species have bites that are dangerous to most people. This (or almost any book from the Florida's Fabulous series) is an ideal housewarming gift for new neighbors, or to stimulate any naturalist's (kids or grown-ups) with an interest in spiders and their kin.True, it is written for those at "entry level" but very few of the more advanced books have photographs as stunning or as abundant as these.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's Worth the Price
I should have known this little book was not a field guide when I saw the (low) price. Still, it's a nice coffee table book and does have pictures and a brief write-up on many Florida Spiders. It left me wanting to know more, maybe three times as much, about each species.
My guess is that the author intended the book for children, not aging naturalists such as myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding introduction to Florida spiders
One of the authors, Dr. G. B. Edwards is curator of Arachnids and Myriapods at the Florida Division of Plant Industry. He is a well-known expert on the Salticidae (jumping spiders). This book also includes many outstanding macro photos of spiders by Pete Carmichael. The text is carefully written and edited by people who really know spiders well (unlike many popular books!).This is an excellent introduction to the major groups of spiders for people of all ages. ...
