Excerpt: Mihaela Dasclu (born February 12, 1970) is a retired Romanian speed skater, and the most successful speed skater from that country. Dasclu was born in the city of Braov, and first trained as a figure skater before changing to speed skating. She debuted at the 1987 World Junior Championships, where she finished seventh. The following year she finished ninth, but was later disqualified along with her team mate Cerasela Hordobetiu, making it impossible for her to make the 1988 Winter Olympics at Calgary. She returned to the international scene in 1991, and finished sixth in the 1000 meter during the 1992 Winter Olympics, the best Romanian Olympic speed skating finish of all time. In the 1994 World Allround Speed Skating Championships in Butte, Montana she won a bronze medal. In the 1994 Winter Olympics she finished eighth in two events, the 1500 meter and the 3000 meter. She continued to compete through the 1990s, with numerous top ten finishes, such as a seventh place finish in the Women's European Championships in 1996, and sixth the following year in the same competition. She finished third in 3000 meter at the 6th World Cup 1995-1996 and the World Cup Final 1995-1996, with her also finishing third in the latter in the 1500 meter. She had second place finishes in the 3000 meter during the 9th World Cup 1995-1996 and the World Cup Final 1996-1997. She also finished second in 1000 meter during the 7th World Cup 1995-1996, as well as second in the 1500 meter during the 7th World Cup 1996-1997. At the 4th World Cup 1996-1997 she finished third in the 5000 meter, followed by a first place finish the following year in that same event during the 7th World Cup 1996-1997. She retired after the 1998 season, on the heels of her worst finish during the... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=15734396 ... Read more

Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Oleg Georgievich Goncharenko (Russian: ) (18 August 1931 16 December 1986), Distinguished Master of Sports of the USSR, was the first male Soviet speed skater to become World Allround Champion. Born in Kharkiv, Ukraine, Oleg Goncharenko made his international debut in 1953 and promptly became World Allround Champion. He would win two more World Allround Championships after that, as well as two European Allround Championships. In 1958, he actually managed to win the "triple", becoming World, European, and Soviet Allround Champion. At the 1956 Winter Olympics of Cortina d'Ampezzo, Goncharenko won bronze on the 5,000 m and on the 10,000 m. He also participated in the 5,000 m at the 1960 Winter Olympics of Squaw Valley, but finished only sixth. Both at home at abroad, Goncharenko was unusually popular for many years, even long after he had retired from speed skating. After winning his first World Championship in 1953 in Helsinki, he received dozens of telegrams in his hotel room there from all over the Soviet Union and from abroad. One of those telegrams he kept until the end of his life because it was particularly dear to him. It was a short message from the legendary Norwegian speed skater Oscar Mathisen, reading "Congratulations. Oscar Mathisen." written just one year before Mathisen's death. Goncharenko's achievements also prompted two cities, Denver and Oslo, to name him an honorary citizen. He also was awarded the Order of Lenin. Goncharenko retired from speed skating in 1962. He died in 1986, at the age of 55, after a painful illness. An overview of medals won by Goncharenko at important championships he...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=12939416 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great accomplishmentin the realm ofpersonal narrative.
Full Circle was a powerful work of signifigance.Deeply emotional, the book transcends Jansen's extraordinary battle as a parable of every athlete's struggle for personal developement.McCallum weaves an enduringtale that athlete, sports nut, or soccer mom can internalize to betterunderstand the common struggle manifested by sports.More eloquent eventhan Shaq Attaq, Full circle is an accomplishment of aesthetics and moralcomprehension. ...
