5-0 out of 5 stars "A book for every school professional"
Review written by Lilian Zelaya.

As a graduate student in the Masters program of Social Work I was very pleased to know that a colleague of mine recommended me the book Involving Latino Families in Schools: Raising Student Achievement Through Home-School Partnershipswhich has been a very helpful resource for me in writing my thesis.

Because my thesis is on "The relationship between Latino parental involvement and their middle school student's academic performance" I was delighted to know that there was literature like this book that provided a thorough background on topics such as life in Latino families, the importance for schools to become active partners with Latino parents in order to achieve student success, parents participating in the schools and getting Latinos to College through home-school partnerships just to name a few.

I enjoyed the author's strength based approach when working with Latino parents and acknowledging that all families have strengths, through their history, language, cultural values and expectations for their children's success. This book also provided inspiring case examples, personal vignettes, as well as suggestions when working in the elementary and secondary levels (or both levels).

The author did a great job at providing information on how essential it is for schools to share information with Latino parents by using both formal and informal verbal and written communication in the language that parent's best understand. I also enjoyed reading how essential it is to incorporate the community and family culture in the school curriculum to create an ongoing partnership.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who works in schools starting from the secretary to the Superintendent. In order for Latino students to truly have all the support they need from their school, the entire school needs to make it their responsibility to support, communicate and be culturally competent when working with students and their parents. In order for parental involvement to increase in schools there needs to be an effort to gain the trust of parents and inform them of how they can participate and remain involved in their children's education. This book is a great contribution for our communities, schools, and families.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Contribution to the Education Community
I find this book to be timely due to the increasing number of Latino families in the education system. This book helps the reader understand the possibilities of intergrating Latino families by using real life examples from her work in the community. My collegues and I have found it to be a contribution to the education community

3-0 out of 5 stars Content is good - Writing is BAD
I'm amazed that a book can be so important and yet be written so poorly. The content is almost overshadowed by the pedantic, fragmented, toe-curlingly dull writing.Read it.Take away the message.Hold your nose.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't wait... run to get this great book!
I am on the editorial review board for the National Association of Elementary School Principals and was happily assigned to read and review this book. With over two thirds of my students English Language Learners (Latino), I hoped I would find some "gems" that would make our school more inviting to parents who would in turn help us by becoming more involved.

Within the first pages of this book, I was advised by Gaitan that this will not be a set recipe for involving your Latino parents. But even better... this book gives you the understandings and tools you need to develop a parental involvement program that meets "your" populations' needs.

This wonderful book, that highlights the points made in each chapter in boxes, distinguishes between elementary and secondary (or both) concepts, and uses case studies to demonstrate points, is a quick read that you will look forward to picking back up each day.

I will definitelybe implementing ideas that I gleaned from this book.In fact, I have ordered the book for my entire faculty. It's simply superb. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The name says it all!!!
Thom Hartmann has written a series of books related to ADD/ADHD.

They all are wonderful easy to understand and useful books.

They introduce a powerful perspective to those labeled ADD/ADHD. ADD/ADHD, being based on labeling behaviors is challenged in many ways by these books of Hartmaan's.

Thom Hartmann's books provide a useful tool to help people recognize the psychological coping mechanism that are associated with ADD patterns of behavior. This was very helpful to me since I am not ADD/ADHD and had no idea how to relate or what I was relating to!!!

The Complete Guide to ADHD is just that, as complete a work of information about ADD/ADHD that I have found to date.

It says handy around the house!

Bottom-line these books helped several people I know and love.

So this review is one of a personal point of "been there done that!"I learned much as did my family and friends.

These books of his help!!!

Yours in good health

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this Hartmann ADD book - it is his BEST
.
There are lots of reviews detailing the major points and I think they do a pretty fair job. So I won't repeat them.

The major point I would like to make is that Thom Hartmann has written several books - I think it's confusing trying to figure out which one(s) to read. His "A Different Perspective" was fantastic. But his "Complete Guid" is the best. If you are into NLP, his "Healing" book is useful. [My take on NLP is: Neuro Linguistic Programming - learn how people's eyes literally look in a particular direction when they are thinking certain types of thoughts {and succeed in poker) - control your involuntary physiological responses to transform your behavior - e.g., train your mind to be tranzuil (instead of fearful) when you see a black cat.]

Thom Hartmann's approach is effective [in my opinion and in direct contrast to the newest review I saw] because it helps me get get a handle on the various problems AND it offers effective advice on how to leverage ADD strengths.

I hope this proves useful.

3-0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Perspecitve, But Little Help
I found Hartmann's Hunter/Farmer take on ADD an interesting way of recasting ADD as something other than a disorder, to help people with ADD create a positive stories for and about themselves and their ADD.If it helps even a few people improve their self-esteem, then it's worth considering.

However, as an adult with ADD who was diagnosed just a year and a half ago, I hoped to to find some helpful hints to improve my performance at work and in my every day life.Hartmann is a bit long on new paradigms but a bit short on "This is what you should do" type advice.Still, I'm glad I took the time to read the book and get to know his ideas and perspective on ADD.

5-0 out of 5 stars He understands ADD...
Thom Hartmann is somebody who seems to really understand what ADD is all about. This is a great book that brings up some very interesting points. The section about education and learning is outstanding.

I think all people who have ADD themselves or care about a person with ADD should read this book. This is a great book somebody who us just begining to learn about ADD. It's also a great book for somebody who is looking for a different view of ADD than doctors and other my be giving.

I think anybody who has an interest in ADD should read at least one of Thom Hartmann's books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book For Beginning to Understand
I have struggled with ADD my whole life, was diagnosed 7 years ago, and only today am I beginning to really begin to gain a grip on my disability. This book has been a real help to me as I begin to do this. It has provided a series of interesting and import ways to look at ADD rather than bashing my head against a wall as if I understood. Rather, I needed a combination of clinical and personal perspectives that this book is great for. I would only say that I wish that there could have been a greater discussion of how, I as an adult can begin to structure my life in a better way as to minimize the effects of ADD. Instead, I think too often in the book the author resorts to more broad summations and issues rather than getting on his hands and knees in the dirt with me. I think that criticism should not overshadow though the great insights this book holds for all of us who are beginning to make that change with our lives or those parents figuring out how to deal with their children's diagnosis. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great help for parent or teacher of ADD child
I refer to this book often. It provides very helpful information about diagnosing and dealing with children with ADD/ADHD.When my child was first diagnosed as ADD, this book helped me realize that it was a fair diagnosis.Every time I get frustrated with the way teachers deal with him, or need to be reminded about all the implications of his being ADD, this is the book I read.I understand that there is a revised edition coming out soon.I plan to get it as soon as it is out.Dr. Umansky provides professional information with personal stories as examples, which make the book accessible to parents and professionals.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE FOR EVERY PARENT OF AN ADD CHILD!
THIS WAS THE FIRST BOOK ON ADD THAT I PURCHASED AFTER MY SON WAS DIAGNOSED. IT HELPED ME AND MY HUSBAND TO UNDERSTAND OUR SON'S CONDITION AND GAVE US TOOLS TO HELP HIM. I ALSO GAVE THIS BOOK TO HIS TEACHERS AND ITGAVE THEM ALOT OF INSIGHT AS WELL. UNLESS THERE IS MANDATORY TRAINING FORTEACHERS IT'S UP TO US TO MAKE SCHOOL AN AS POSITIVE EXPEREANCE AS POSIBLEFOR OUR CHILDREN AND THIS BOOK IS ONE WAY.

3-0 out of 5 stars Overall, a useful contribution to parent literature on ADD
The book was interesting and reasonably complete. It was well-written for a target audience of parents and teachers of ADD kids and offered a broader perspective on what ADD is than many books. The book's principal weaknesspertains to its discussion of the legal issues surrounding ADD andeducational accommodations. While the discussion of IDEA was exceptionallythorough and complete, there was no mention whatsoever of Section 504 lawsor accommodation plans. With many parents and school districts reluctant toimplement special ed services for ADD, Section 504 plans have proven to bea godsend for parents in getting schools to flex to the needs of their ADDchildren without having to implement special services or IEPs. I wouldrecommend the book with this one caveat. ... Read more

Very useful resource, great for the price! 189 pages covering home, discipline, school issues and advocacy. This contains a beginning section describing gifted traits in case you are not sure of where your child falls, through school and advocacy for gifted legislation. There is a detailed discussion on perfectionism in gifted children. Also in the back of the book and throughout are further resources and a glossary of terms. This is a used 2001 version, there may be a better updated version available re:legislative issues. The age of the version is the only reason it got 4 stars instead of 5.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Had No Idea
I had seen this book in my teacher's library and wanted to see what it was about, and a few days ago I got around to doing it. I had no idea it would be about a mentally challenged girl named Gerri who comes to live with her family after living in an institution all her life. This story is gripping and a little ways into the book, Gerri really touches you in the heart, and it seems like you just want to hug her (that's what she does to everybody). Sure, this story isn't some magical fantasy with adventure in every corner, but I love it anyway. I told some of my friends what it was about, and they were like,"Huh, sounds great." This story is great, told in the view of the little brother, you'll love the story, characters, and everything else about this book. Some humor, a serious tone, and Gerri will make you want to Welcome Home, Jellybean.

5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!
I STRONGLY RECOMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE! IT SO SAD SO FUNNY AND SO TOUCHING THAT I'LL READ IT LIKE TWICE A MONTH AND STILL NOT GET TIRD OF IT. THE STORY IS ABOUT A 13 YEAR OLD BOY NAMED NEIL WHO'SSISTER 14 YEAR OLD GERRI IS MENTALY CHALLENGED AND HAS STAYED AT AN INTITUION ALL HER LIFE AND IS FINALLY COMING HOME. BUT JUST GETTING HER FROM HER HOME, TO THE CAR, AND UP THE ELEVATOR WAS BIG TROUBLE AND THERE IS PLENTY MORE COMING. BUT GERRI IS SLOWLY LEARNING, AND SOMETIMES LEARNING FOR GERRI CAN BE A BIT TROUBLE. AND ALL OF IT IS MAKING NEIL STRUGGLE IN SCHOOL. SINCE GERRI HAS COME THE OXLEY FAMILY HAS CHANGED A WHOLE LOT! SOME GOOD...AND SOME BAD. MARLINE FANTA SHYER HAS DONE AN EXELLENT JOB THAT I'M SUPRISED THIS BOOK HASN'T GOT AN AWARD!! I LOVE HOW THE AUTHOR LEAVES CLUES AND AND HINTS AT THE END OF THE CHAPTERS MAKING YOU WANT TO READ MORE. THIS BOOK IS GREAT! I JUST WISH IT WAS A LONGER, THICKER BOOK, (LIKE THE HARRY POTTER SERISE)

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT book!
I thought that Welcome Home, Jellybean was an excellent book. I couldn't stop reading it! I really like how at the end of each chapter the author made it so you wanted to keep reading and reading. It is about a girl who is mentally challenged and she comes home. The family, especially Neil, has to adapt to Geraldine's(the mentally challenged girl) special needs. I would tell everyone to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Passed Down From Generation to Generation.
I am 33 years old and read this book when I was in grade school. It was one of my favorite books ever since. My daughter who is now 9 is in the process of reading it and I've noticed that she hasn't been able to put it down YET!
This book gives insight on what it is really like to have a mentally challenged person in your life. It shows how to gain patience, understanding and, most of all, how to truly LOVE someone through the eyes of a child.
