Excerpt: There is a dispute over using the name "Sea of Japan" to refer to the sea bordered by Russia, Japan, North Korea, and South Korea. Although Sea of Japan, or equivalent translations, are commonly used in international productions, North and South Korea are proposing different names. North Korea proposes the "East Sea of Korea" and South Korea proposes the "East Sea", instead of, or as a name concurrent with, "Sea of Japan". South Korean groups argue that "East Sea" should be implemented as a historically and geographically appropriate name, claiming that the sea was known as "Sea of Korea/Corea/Joseon" or "East/Oriental Sea" until Japan's military expansion in the region. They insist the title "Sea of Japan" was unfairly standardized during Japanese rule of Korea, and thus remains a symbol of Japan's imperialistic past. Korea argues that during the critical period for asserting the name East Sea in the international arena, Korea was militarily occupied by Japan and Korea's sovereignty was less influential and therefore had no diplomatic representation on the global stage. Koreans were forced to surrender the use of their native language under the Japanese rule (1938~), and adopted Japanese names (1940~), while Korean geographical names including the East Sea (Donghae - /) were dropped in favour of Japanese ones. In this paper, I seek to examine the ways in which the sovereign territoriality of the state has been contested and (re)constructed in relation to globalization and economic liberalization, especially in the context of the East Asian developmental state. In particular, by building on Aiwa Ong's concept of ''graduated sovereignty'', I will address how the forms of state regulation and sovereignty can be spatially differentiated or graduated within a national territory, with a focus on the spatial processes of economic liberalization in South Korea. In focusing on a recent globalization project of the Korean government, which aims to develop global hubs of international movement of capital and skilled labor in several localities by designating these ''economic free zones'', my analytical focus in this paper is on answering this question: Why and under what political and economic circumstance has the Korean government decided to use this spatial strategy? More specifically, I argue in this paper that the strategy of building ''special economic zones'' in South Korea is partly a spatial outcome of East Asian ''neo-liberalization'', stemming from politically contested interactions between inherited institutional forms and policy frameworks of the developmental state, and the emergent forces of economic liberalization. In other words, the Korean government's project to build ''economic free zones'' can be considered a strategy of ''spatially selective liberalization''; it demonstrates strong properties of path dependency, in which established institutional arrangements constrain the scope and trajectory of neo-liberal reform in South Korea. ... This is a comprehensive overview of South Korea that will nicely introduce the student to the country, its culture and people!
It's always interesting to learn about other countries, especially if you know someone who has relatives who live there or is of that particular national descent.South Korea is a country in Asia on the Korean peninsula, a land mass that holds North Korea as well.The surrounding waters include the Yellow Sea, the Sea of Japan and the Korean Strait.If you look on the map in this book you can easily spot where Seoul, its capital city is, where the mountains and plains are and in the inset map you can see where South Korea is in relation to other Asian countries.There are "more than one thousand islands [that] lie off the peninsula.You will learn a bit about the islands of Ulleungdo and Jeju as well as South Korea's mountain ranges.
