Product Description

Because the attrition rate for new teachers in high-poverty schools averages between 40% and 50% over the first five years of teaching, this investigation offers practical solutions to more than 100 of the daily challenges they face. With an emphasis on pragmatic approaches that can be accomplished in the classroom, the book argues that many of the skills necessary for teaching in urban schools are not properly taught in university programs and that most white teachers simply have to learn by experience. Written from a black perspective and supported by real-life examples and details rather than theory, this helpful compendium of advice and expertise tackles issues of race and class while outlining the many ways in which the American school system is designed to contribute to a teacher's struggle.

2-0 out of 5 stars Educational Slander
I was quite disappointed in this book and it's overall idea that children of color are at some disadvantage if they are taught by white female teachers. His point is understood if we were talking about african-american children. In the 20+ years I've been teaching I have only had 12 children from Africa in my classrooms. It's interesting that he throws Hispanic students into the mix. What about the Asian or Indian or the various other cultures that make up the schools in America? Why does it always have to be about race. The entire first chapter of the book should be handed out to each black couple thinking about having a baby. Learning about your culture begins in the home. Building a better home environment, and taking responsibility for raising that child would be better strategies to focus all his energy on in this book. Each year I have one-two black students whose parents inform me that the child may be nervous because this is the first time they've been around "real" white people!! Am I to assume "they don't see color" either. These are the parents who refuse to get a library card yet they have the Jet and Ebony magazines on the coffee table, and the TV on BET. Black neighborhoods, homes, churches, retail shops, grocery stores tell me all I need to know about what their teaching their childrenwhen it comes to diversity, tolerance, and making sense of the world they live in. I choose to believe that one day these children will move out of the neighborhood and into society. I do agree with the author about denial. I hear so much of it from black parents. It's so much easier to come into the school and gripe about what the child is not learning or how they are being taught. Enough with the excuses.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's Amazing
I am not an advid reader but when this book came in the mail to our school, I flipped through it and was totally captivated by what Dr. Kunjufu was saying. It is straightforward and very easy reading.A child could understand and implement these simple strategies. While I don't agree 100% with all the strategies in this book, I do believe if educators would consider the important truths written here, light bulbs will begin to go off in their brain and they will see that "problem student" in a different light and be able to effectively reach and teach that student. This book should be in the hands of every educator of ethnic children.

4-0 out of 5 stars clear and simple
very straight forward, true to title and author style.several references to other publications (by kunjufu himself) for details.but good primer to get your wheels turning in other directions to help children (and yourself) in the classroom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kunjunfu does it again!
This is a wonderful little book.I really enjoy reading all of Dr. Kunjufu books because he does not try to pack too much material into his books. He does a great job of writing in simple language and making the information easy to read and digest.I have read many of his other books and I have been reading them for many years.I will review some of the older classics later. The favorite part of this offering for me is the first part of the book where he lays the framework. The reason why I say this is the best part of the book because it presents the foundation as to why children of color are struggling in the school system.Children of color are different.Their culture is different.Their learning styles are different. This has to be acknowledged.Once you understand this premise developing strategies for teaching them is easy.Kunjufu does a great job in making this case.He then goes on to give strategies for teaching children of color in the areas of bonding, décor, motivation, history, language arts, math and science, discipline, males hip hop, and pedagogy.Make no mistake there is much valuable information that can and should be utilized by any teacher who is attempting to teach children of color. What is annoying is this has to actually be said.If you set up your curriculum to be effective for children of color and your objective was to educate European-American children would you be surprised if they struggled? This book can serve as an excellent handbook for teaching children of color and I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A guide to dealing with students of color and their special needs versus other students
Different upbringing brings different educational needs. "100+ Educational Strategies To Teach Children of Color" is a guide to dealing with students of color and their special needs versus other students. With guides on understanding cultural differences and using it to motivate students as well as countless other tips and advice for teachers on dealing with problems that would arise with students of color that would not typically arise otherwise. The Big Picture gives voice to a larger point of view: that a grand and remarkable unity underlies all of our major religious traditions. Here is the "forgotten truth" about the sacred teachings, principles, and themes that have unified perennial philosophies through the ages, brought to life by our greatest living scholar of comparative religions, Huston Smith. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful and Compelling Presentation from an Eminent Scholar and Teacher
It's not often that someone as learned and eminent as Huston Smith sums up, in an audio presentation, his understanding of the "big picture" gained from many decades of scholarly study, reflection, and personal experience. We're therefore incredibly fortunate to have to this two-hour presentation, and I think that listening to it is an opportunity not to be missed by anyone who takes philosophical/spiritual matters seriously.

I've just listened to this presentation for the second time, and I got a lot more out of it than the first time, so I'll surely be listening to it again, probably many times.

I can't really do justice to Smith's view of the big picture in a summary, and you shouldn't need a summary anyway, since the presentation is only two hours. However, for those not familiar with Smith's thought, let me just note that Smith contrasts the modern scientific worldview with the "traditional" worldview comprised of what is shared in common among the world's religions. He argues that the scientific worldview is impressive but limited, whereas the traditional worldview is compelling for several reasons, though not provable, and (importantly) isn't contradicted by science.

In unfolding this presentation, Smith demonstrates a command of philosophy, science, religion, and spirituality which is worthy of his reputation.Because of his age, Smith speaks quite slowly and his voice sometimes quivers, but I'm patient enough that I didn't mind his pace, plus the slower pace helps you absorb the lucidly organized content of his presentation.

Warmly and strongly recommended without hesitation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Comments from Distinguished Educators
An engaging, timely, and important historical account.Evans's book is perceptive and compelling, and should be essential reading for anyone interested in the history of social education.

~Wilson J. Warren, Western Michigan University,

Evans' delineation of approaches is vastly more complex and richer than those proposed by other scholars ...

~Donald Schneider, University of Georgia

Largely because it is a space for articulating competing visions of the "good society," there is no area of the school curriculum that is more contested than social studies. In his detailed and well-researched examination of a century of curricular and pedagogical reform efforts, Evans argues that the history of the field is largely a story of civil war over the purposes, content, methods, and ideology of the social studies curriculum. Evans's thesis that what began as a struggle of various interest groups has evolved into a cultural war against progressive social studies is convincing, and he points to the current, narrow disciplinary focus on history and the social sciences in today's schools as evidence. Evans concludes that the turf struggles in the field have contributed to continuing failure of curricular reform ... .Until now, social studies education lacked a satisfying, comprehensive curricular history; that this history has been written by one of the strongest critics of history-centered social studies education adds to the irony. Summing up: Highly recommended.

~E. W. Ross, University of British Columbia

Evans' work gives an historical review of the current struggle over the content and process of social studies instruction in the curriculum. It offers insight into the evolution of the current disengagement in social studies education in public school by identifying key events and people from his insider's perspective. The power of money, influence, and privilege fragment efforts for a common social studies position, both philosophically and pragmatically. Evans tries to bridge some of these differences by a shift in focus. His thesis is that social studies itself is not the target but rather the pedagogy of critical inquiry that is central to learning about historical events, political systems, social institutions, and global interactions that frame the content. With that stance, he is creating space for groups to find common ground for dialogue around issues of pedagogy. He offers multiple examples and descriptions of materials created for social studies education to make this a valuable professional resource.

~Reese H. Todd, Texas Tech University

Ronald W. Evans is Professor in the School of Teacher Education at San Diego State University. He is the author of "This Happened in America: Harold Rugg and the Censure of Social Studies" (2007, Information Age) and editor of the "Handbook on Teaching Social Issues" (1996, NCSS). ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
As a Catholic seeking a more complete understanding of the "tough issues" for which critics bash our Church, this book is disappointing. Weighing in at only 83 pages, this book leaves much to be desired. Most "chapters" consist of only a review of an issue's history followed by a series of questions about it, in a food-for-thought manner.

To be fair, the book seems like it is intended for religious education classes or other discussion groups. For the individual reader, however, I would look into George Weigel's book, "The Truth of Catholicism," Peter Kreeft's "Catholic Christianity," or Alan Schreck's "Catholic and Christian."

I give the Most Reverend Pilarczyk credit for doing what many Archbishops should be doing--which is seeking to better educate the laity about Church teachings--but this book, unfortunately, just isn't substantive.

5-0 out of 5 stars No Theology Degree Needed
I teach Confirmation class to tenth graders. At this age, they are struggling to form their own opinions on tough issues, but still want to be informed on what the "authorities" think. This book is tailor-made for the "sound-bite generation."Each of the 12 tough issues is covered in about 4-7 pages of easy-to-read text.I passed the book around and offered to buy a copy for each of them - they all wanted one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Source for the Straight Story
Ever wonder why the Catholic Church teaches what it does, especially on controversial issues like abortion and capital punishment? If so, this book is for you.

Archbishop Pilarczyk writes in an accessible, easy-to-understand manner. No theology degree required. He also writes in a compassionate manner, acknowledging that these are, after all, tough issues. At the same time, he puts forth the Church's position in a clear, concise manner.

Designed to increase the understanding of Catholics and anyone interested in these issues, this book is a plus to have on your bookshelf. ... Read more

"Media Messages" is one of the few books to confront issues of race, class, and gender in the media. Holtzman's work will be useful to media literacy educators seeking ideas for how to address issues of multiculturalism and the media in the classroom. Holtzman provides media activities that help readers and students reflect on their own racial, sexual, and class backgrounds and perceptions, and how the latter is informed by film, television, and popular music.
Her analysis is not just theoretical, but is supported with numerious examples of television shows, movies, and songs to explore issues of racism, poverty, and sexism. I recommend this book along Carlos Cortes's The Children Are Watching, and Zook's Color by Fox. ... Read more

Product Description
When four New York City police officers killed Amadou Diallo in 1999, the forty-one shots they fired echoed loudly across the nation. In death, Diallo joined a long list of young men of color killed by police fire in cities and towns all across America. Through innuendos of criminality, many of these victims could be discredited and, by implication, held responsible for their own deaths. But Diallo was an innocent, a young West African immigrant doing nothing more suspicious than returning home to his Bronx apartment after working hard all day in the city. Protesters took to the streets, successfully demanding that the four white officers be brought to trial. When the officers were acquitted, however, horrified onlookers of all races and ethnicities despaired of justice.

In 41 Shots . . . and Counting, Beth Roy offers an oral history of Diallo's death. Through interviews with members of the community, with police officers and lawyers, with government officials and mothers of young men in jeopardy, the book traces the political and racial dynamics that placed the officers outside Diallo's house that night, their fingers on symbolic as well as actual triggers. With lucid analysis, Roy explores events in the courtroom, in city hall, in the streets, and in the police precinct, revealing the interlacing conflict dynamics. 41 Shots . . . and Counting allows the reader to consider the implications of the Diallo case for our national discourses on politics, race, class, crime, and social justice. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An impressive recounting and analysis of the incident
One of the critically important issues of contemporary American culture is the intersection of race relations and law enforcement. As an experienced mediator in the San Francisco Bay Area and founder of the Practitioners Research and Scholarship Institute, author Beth Roy brings a special expertise to the subject in "41 Shots...and Counting: What Amadou Diallo's Story Teaches Us about Policing, Race, and Justice". The title refers to an incident in which New York police officers shot 41 times killing a young West African immigrant in 1999 as he was returning to his home from his place of work. His dramatic death incited intense interest in the African-American community. When the police officers were acquitted of any criminal conduct in the affair, the judicial system was looked upon by many minority groups as a seriously flawed instrument of enforcing social justice, proper police procedure, and inflaming racial tension. Strongly recommended for community and academic library contemporary social issues collections and reading lists, "41 Shots...and Counting" is an impressive recounting and analysis of the incident and its aftermath for the courts, the community, and the police. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
I stumbled on this in local library.Went straight home and ordered one while I used the library copy for a month.I am a tertiary educated scientist but this really spelt out how to approach science for young children. If you have ever told your enquiring child that "thats just the way it is" orput it down to a divine inspiration - then this is for you. There is no surer way of ruining your child's future enquiring scientific mind than these sorts of pseudo explanations for things that you are uneducated about! And there is plenty that I feel uneducated about despite having the most expensive and classical education that the UK could offer!

So many great moments. One is the author's memory of his father reading to him about dinosaurs and stopping to draw a picture in his mind of how big the stats really are (imagine his head coming into the top floor window of the house except his head is too big to get into the window).Another is that a vast no. of Harvard grads have wrong concept of seasonal climate cause.Fantastic 3D demos of earth/moon/sun experiments. My 4 year old was very taken with Gallileo which I would never have thought of discussing with her until I read this book.

This book single handedly changed the way I deal with questions from young children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and useful
"Teach Your Child Science" is a useful and well written book.

Children are naturally curious about the world. With this book, you will help your child discover and understand aspects of astronomy, biology, chemistry, earth science, physics, and phychology.

And there is much more here than many good, simple experiments. Science is more than an area of interest; a basic understanding of science and the scientific method helps us in all sorts of ways. Shermer helps you get your child on the path to rational thinking.

Shermer, like James Randi and Carl Sagan, is a strong voice against pseudoscience and the occult. He has written a book that is a building block to make your child a clear-thinking adult. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding Media
Cortes holds that media is an educational force that imprints, reinforces, and perpetuates social constructs. In his words, they "contribute to the construction of beliefs and attitudes about diversity" (p. 23).He provides suggestions and frameworks for educators to enhance media literacy, such as conducting a self-assessment of one's own exposure and reactions to media, evaluating what students have already been taught by the media about cultural groups, incorporating mass media as a curricular resource, encouraging analytical thinking, working with parents, and working with the media.

He discusses a point of concern that I share: studies of media treatment are frequently unigroup and do not compare treatment across groups. He states, "while a unigroup analysis can suggest such treatment patterns, only a comparative analysis can confirm it" (p. 54).More comparative analyses leading to cross-group dialogue are certainly needed to gain diverse perspectives.

This text is an excellent resource for multicultural education.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting read
I read this book in context of a college course, and I found that Cortes makes a clear statement about how media can affect our perceptions on race, culture, gender, etc. Cortes was good at keeping his personal beliefs out of the book, while still using personal stories about his grandchildren to make examples. This was a clear, concise, easy read.

5-0 out of 5 stars experience counts
During the fall of 2001 I had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Cortes by telephone about his 30 years of experience in working with the issue of diversity. This book is a reflection of Dr. Cortes' commitment to proactive approaches to the inevitable conflict that results between groups that see/perceive the world differently.

He is an uncommon voice in the all-too-common world of media. His assessment is that diversity is 'informally' taught through popular media in an uncoordinated manner to the detriment of our children is accurate.

His advocacy is hardly limited to his own ethnic background, and his insistence that there must be limits to tolerance is refreshing in current times of political correctness.

This book should be read by educators, parents and media professionals.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very lucid and revealing...
Even though as a media literacy teacher of African descent I disagree with some of the conclusions Carlos Cortes makes in his book, I appreciate that he has written it. In a very lucid writing style, especially for anacademic, Cortes demonstrates how multicultural issues do indeed exist inmainstream media. He provides in one chapter his example of amediajournal he kept in which he records and comments on the multiculturalcontent found in his day-by-day (for a month in this case) encounters withmostly mainstream media. He reads stories about immigration andnaturalization, Dr. Laura Schlesinger's observance of Rosh Hashannah, aLatino columnist discussing "the importance of multiethnic rolemodels," the Promise Keepers, Louis Farrahkhan and his call for anational day of atonement, the antibilingual initiative in California, theMillion Woman March, Sports Illustrated stories on racism, etc. This is auseful strategy for helping students make conscious use of the media. Sooften students are led to believe there's nothing there except crime andpolitics.

Basically, Cortes contends that diversity issues are raised inthe media. That media is a source of non-school multicultural learning. Butwhat is needed is an analysis of how young people respond to such mediacontent. He shares some of his grand daughter's responses to movies likeThe Lion King and Pocahontas. Despite the valid criticism these mediapresentations received, he sees them as occassions for multiculturalawareness. For him, the media and the public school system play similiarroles in providing multicultural education, but they each do it slightlydifferent ways.

He also argues that students need to be taught how toexamine media texts in a critical way--not in terms of bashing media, butin making a critical analysis of its presentations. This means thatteachers need to bring media into the classroom and not allow it to be themain teacher of diversity issues. For in many ways, he argues, studentslearn more about diversity issues from the media and society than they dofrom the classroom.

While I think it's important that he brings thissomewhat positive view of mainstream media, I think he should have providedan analysis of what ethnically focused and genered-focused media are doing. In publications like Ms.Magazine, Emerge, Hispanic, ColorLines, and the newAsian American magazines diversity issues and representations are very muchpresent and often provide a very different analysis than mainstreammedia.

Lastly, I was disappointed that he didn't address the role ofcorporate media and mergers and how it marginalizes and makes difficult fora true diversity of voices to get heard. While yes diversity issues areaddressed, they are often presented in sterotypical ways or from verylimited viewpoints. While mainstream media, for example, has covered issueson immigration or bilinqual education, it is usually from a Whitemainstream point of view. Progressive writers, reporters, and actors inthese issues don't get their own shows and columns in mainstream media toexpress their views.

I'm sure Cortes has read the such critics as RobertW. McChesney (__Rich Media, Poor Democracy__) who show how corporate mediaand its commercial driven interests help to essentially erode democracy anddiversity in this country. I can't understand why he doesn't address thisproblem in his otherwise useful book.

I nevertheless recommend this book. It's very useful for media literacy teachers K-College. Not too many workson this subject exist and this one is sure to help lead to future researchand analysis.

P.S. I also would recommend another work similiar to thisone: The Black Image in the White Mind: Media and Race in America, byRobert Entman and Andrew and Rojecki. ... Read more
