Product Description
A wide variety of skin signs have been associated with internal malignancy. Cutaneous manifestations may develop before an internal neoplasm is recognized, and the skin findings can aid in diagnosis. In some cases the skin is infiltrated by malignant cells that represent metastatic or local spread from an internal malignancy. In other cases, the skin lesions are related to the underlying presence of malignancy, but they do not contain malignant cells. This issue of Dermatologic Clinics contains information on topics such as malignancy and cancer treatment-related hair and nail changes, tumor invasion of the skin, radiation therapy toxicity to the skin, and epidermal manifestations of internal malignancy. ... Product Description

Organ transplantation has been performed for almost 40 years with steadily increasing success regarding long-time survival of the graft, as well as quality of life for the patient. However, graft tolerance only can be achieved via induction and maintenance of an impaired immunological surveillance. An increase of skin cancers as a consequence of the lowered cellular immunoresponse seems to parallel the overall increased long-time survival rate of organ transplant recipients. Against the background of chronic immunosuppression known risk factors like the amount of sun exposure prior and post transplantation, oncogenic viruses as well as the genetic background, and place of residence (latitude) are strongly related with the increased skin cancer incidence.

The increasing incidence of non-melanoma skin cancer, paralleling a prolonged survival of patients after organ transplantation, represents a significant reason for morbidity and long-term morbidity in organ transplant recipients worldwide. The incidence of non-melanoma skin cancer in liver-, kidney- and heart transplant recipients varies from 1.5 to 22 %, 2 to 24 % and 6 to 34 % after < 5 years post transplant. Ultraviolet radiation as well as immunosuppressive therapy are crucial risk-factors regarding the induction and progression of skin cancer. Ultraviolet radiation is related to the induction of DNA damage, as well as interference with Langerhans cell antigen presentation and a Th1 – Th2 shift induced via a release of IL-10. Whereas the overall duration of immunosuppression and the cumulative dosage applied are relevant parameters in the evaluation of an increased tumor risk, individual differences between specific immunosuppressive agents remain unclear. The workup of genetic as well as other unclear phenomenon like the reverse BCC/SCC ratio might shed some further light into the genesis and immunology of the non-melanoma skin cancer in general.

4-0 out of 5 stars OXYGEN HEALING THERAPIES
Veryinformative and for me it has helped much with my healing from triplebrain surgery. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

4-0 out of 5 stars The healing properties of oxygen
This is a well-written consumer guide to bio-oxidative therapies that highlights the therapeutic benefits of hydrogen peroxide and ozone and the methods in which they are used. The good news is that these therapies promise to bring relief to millions because the substances are inexpensive and affordable. What's more, they have very few adverse effects when correctly administered.

The difference between oxidation (free radical activity) and oxygenation (increase in oxygen molecules) is made clear at the start. The clinical use of ozone and hydrogen peroxide has been amply documented in medical literature, yet ignored by the medical mainstream. At last its value is being discovered by a growing number of health-wise consumers. These two substances hold great promise for the treatment of some of the major diseases confronting humanity and they form part of a new healing paradigm involving safe, effective, inexpensive and natural forms of therapy.

In the first part the author explains what these therapies are and takes a closer look at first ozone and then hydrogen peroxide. Part Two discusses bio-oxidative therapies in cardiovascular and other diseases and conditions (from Allergies to Wound Healing) as well as cancer and HIV/AIDS. A holistic protocol is provided in Part Three, which includes body cleansing, an oxygenation diet, nutritional supplements & healing herbs, aerobic exercise & breathing, emotions, mind & spirit, plus a discussion of oxygen products, services and applications.

Ozone generators, air purifiers, ozonated drinking water, oxygenated bottled waters, oxygenation products and the use of hydrogen peroxide in the kitchen and garden are detailed here. The Resources section includes Internet addresses, organizations in North America and Europe, publications, manufacturers and distributors of products, videos and books. The bibliography covers books on bio-oxidative therapies, on natural and complementary therapies, plus general books on holistic health.

There are also extensive Notes to the chapters and an index. Tables and figures, including a model of how a virus is inactivated by ozone and a photograph of a portable ozone generator, illustrate the text. The chapter on herbs and supplements includes interesting information on inter alia Beta Carotene, the vitamins, Coenzyme Q10, trace elements, minerals, Echinacea, garlic, Gingko Biloba and green tea. Under Mind-Body Healing the author discusses psycho-neuro-immunology, how to nurture the emotions, mind and spirit and the use of creative visualization.

This excellent book certainly makes a point: that the proven safety, effectiveness and medical applications of hp and oxygen warrant far more attention than they have been receiving from the press and the medical and scientific communities. Fortunately these therapies are in use in clinics and hospitals in certain countries like Germany and this knowledge is spreading.

In an age of increasing medical costs and complex medical procedures, many health-care consumers are looking for safe and effective therapies that will naturally enhance their innate healing powers. The author has done an excellent job of stimulating discussion by presenting the facts of these therapies, thereby giving consumers the necessary information to make informed and intelligent decisions regarding health-care options. I strongly recommend this book to all who have decided to take responsibility for their own health. ... Read more

Product Description
Sunburn is more serious than stinging skin and a scratchy shirt collar. Solar exposure is the primary cause of premature aging symptoms like wrinkles, brown spots, and broken blood vessels in the skin. It causes cataracts and vision damage, too. Not to mention that skin cancer mortality is on the rise, and melanoma is now so common that one American dies from it every hour. But that doesn't mean we should stay indoors with the shades pulled down. What we need is a definitive source for the latest and most accurate information on sun protection.

This book, written by the founders of Coolibar, the only provider of solar-protective clothing endorsed by the Skin Cancer Foundation, tells readers everything they need to know to protect themselves from the sun, prevent life-threatening skin cancer, and preserve their skin's natural youth and beauty. It features expert advice from doctors at the Mayo Clinic, the Skin Cancer Foundation, The American Academy of Dermatology, and the Environmental Protection Agency.

The book prescribes a lifestyle that allows readers to enjoy the sun, while protecting themselves from its harmful rays. It explains the important things to look for in sunscreens, protective clothing, and sunglasses. It explains to readers how and when to go into the sun, and what regular medical check-ups they should schedule to help prevent undetected skin cancer. For parents, the book offers many tips on protecting kids from the sun. In addition to discussions about the changing environmental factors that influence solar exposure, the book includes information about sun protection education programs and recently enacted solar protection policies.Amazon.com Review
Sunny days are meant to be spent outdoors--but the sun is decidedly a mixed blessing. With an explosion in skin cancer and an unending array of anti-wrinkle creams, proper care is confusing--and the facts heard through the media are often misleading. Sun Protection for Life explains in simple terms the dangers of improper skin exposure--the introductory chapter alone will have you reaching for the sunblock and hat, even if you're sitting indoors.

The book has a slightly doomed tone, but perhaps that's as it should be; malignant melanoma is deadly, and statistics chart a steady rise in incidence, particularly as tan-loving baby boomers continue ageing. As the authors are founders of Coolibar sun-protective clothing, one would normally expect some degree of product placement, but that's not the case in this book. There is a lengthy chapter on what degree of protection clothing provides, as well as what to look for when purchasing summer wear--but there are equally detailed descriptions of types of sunscreen, suggestions for different age brackets, and information on identifying potentially cancerous growths. The book ends with a resource guide, covering everything from international skin care sources to, yes, sun-protective clothing companies.

What's most impressive is the way in-depth detail is presented with such a matter-of-fact manner; it's easily understandable for anyone past the ninth grade. It also offers steady encouragement for turning the dangerous desire for a tan into a healthy respect for the sun, with regular examples from Australia's skin cancer awareness program that has made incredibly positive changes in that country's cancer rates. While you might not feel the need to join a nation crusade on the topic, at the very least you'll be grabbing a cap and a tube of zinc oxide before leaving home. Jill Lightner ... Read more
