Gotthis book for a class.It's easy to use, includes different variations of signs that might be used.As with any sign book though, you have to try to figure out what the sign will look like in action from a drawing.

comprehensive start to ASL
I have taken ASL classes and was using this book as a review.It's pretty comprehensive and contains substantive amounts of nouns (both concrete and abstract), verbs, adjectives, etc.The pictures and the descriptions are very helpful too.

I've gotten several sign books, flash cards and videos.This is a great book.It's informative yet simple.The illustrations are darling.I only wish this illustrator would make some ASL Baby Signs flashcards!!

If you want to learn more about baby signing, benefits and signs to teach (and how) this book is for you.This book doesn't go into tons of signs so don't get it thinking you'll gain a huge vocabulary from it but it does cover very important daily signs that I think most parents using signs will/would/do use!

Love this book
I love this book - it is exactly what I wanted.For me it has the perfect amount of detail on how to work with your baby and it has the perfect amount of signs.I was not looking to become a sign language expert, I found other books much too detailed for what I wanted.The sign descriptions are very clear and concise and I think it it the perfect book to get started in signing.

Wonderful Book with Great Illustrations
I bought this book to use for my ten-month-old son, and I really love it! I also purchased Baby Einstein - My First Signs to go along with it.

It begins with basic information and research about signing with babies and is very easy to understand.

I think it includes the perfect amount of signs - it has the basic need-based signs that I would want to use with my baby, plus some extras that would be fun. It also includes the alphabet and information on where to learn more signs.

My favorite part of this book is the illustrations. They are so cute, and so easy to follow - along with each illustration is a written explanation on how to make the sign.

This book is very helpful and is adorable. I would definitely recommend it!

bad graphics with a focus on Signed English
I admire the other reviewers who were able to learn from this book and who found it useful for their purposes. As for myself, I found the graphic design very confusing: the point of view shifts with every word, from hands alone, to face, to head and above, to chest, as well as from the side to the front.

Furthermore, the book is most useful to learn Signed English (or as this book calls it, Pidgin Sign English). I am more interested in learning American Sign Language, because I have an interest in the grammatical structure of other languages and because it's a more dominant form of communication between deaf persons.

The information content is dense and presented in complete sentences, so if you can get past the graphic presentation and if learning ASL isn't important to you, this could be a good book for your purposes.

Simple Made Easy
I own many Sign Language books (textbooks, dictionaries, etc.) and I found this book a wonderful resource to help beginners to sign sentences right away instead of looking up each word in an sign language dictionary.

Format for PSE is Excellent
I teach ASL at a college level.I would still recommend this book to everyone who is interested in learning sign language, but who does not have constant contact with Deaf people, or limited occassions at a work place.The format of learning elementary to more complex sentences (and the vocabulary along the way) puts the didactic and practical together in one easy to use resource.It comes with a comparatively inexpensive DVD with all of the chapters in visual format.I think it's one of the best for non-ASL users.

Sign Language Made Simple
This book is great. We were able to communicate with a deaf person (limited of course) with just the first two lessons. Rather than learning each word individually, like you would with a dictionary, you learn in sentences. We really enjoy our sign language class using this book. It makes learning SL fun.

Good place to start with ESL
This book is very helpful for starting to learn sign language, but truth of the matter is, all deaf people sign somewhat differently.No matter how much you try to learn, unless you actually communicate with a deaf person who will correct your signing, it's useless.It is a good place to start learning English Sign (uses alot of initialization).I do recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn, but I even more recommend immersing yourself in the deaf culture. ... Listen up ITP trainers! "Reading Between the Signs" is a true gem and should be required reading for all students in Interpreter Training Programs nationwide.

Mindess and her publisher's copy editors possess the requisite skills to render a typographically error-free book with pleasing margins and fonts, unlike Alcorn and Humphrey's "So You Want to Be an Interpreter," a required text of many ITPs.

Unlike Alcorn and Humphrey, who dutifully introduce and briefly discuss cross-cultural differences and how they influence sign language interpreting, Mindess thoughtfully and thoroughly takes the reader on an extended journey with deep, eye-opening analysis and a plethora of real-world examples that interpreters encounter every day. It's easy to understand the content with so many supporting examples of it throughout the text.

Like an engaging movie, play, or book that requires the moviegoer, theatergoer, or reader to use his/hercritical thinking skills and comparisons to one's own experiences to what s/he experiences in that particular media, Mindess' book goes by quickly, because the content is so well-developed and on-point.

I found this book quite by accident. It was on a reading list of an online course I took to prepare for the NIC Knowledge Exam. I found it to be extraordinarily helpful in filling in the gaps I had regarding cross-cultural communication between the hearing and Deaf communities. It answered a lot of questions I had and I felt much better having read it before taking the NIC Knowledge Exam (which I successfully passed).

Reading between the signs
I really enjoyed Anna Mindess's book Reading between the signs. I thought it was very informative and had read it once before when I first started taking ASL and didn't really understand it all that much but as of now I've been taking ASL for almost two years and have a better understanding and appreciatition for the Deaf and it's culture and the difference between the Deaf and the hearing world. What a great book for people who are just starting to take ASL and want to be come active in the Deaf communityand one day maybe persue a career with it

The Cultural Depth of this book is its True Gem!
This book entitled "Reading Between the Signs: Intercultural Communication for Sign Language Interpreters (2nd edition)" is the most indepth study of cultural mediation that I have ever seen.Anna Mindness does a wonderjul job of helping an interpreter to see where communication barriers exist, and then explain how to bridge those gaps.Why are cultures different? What is cultural mediation? every parent should sign with their babies!
This is a great intro book if you are interested in signing with your baby.I did this with both my kids and honestly don't understand why EVERYBODY doesn't do it.You get to "see" what your child is thinking months before your child can talk.The book gives some good ideas on when to do signs (when you see baby look at something they are interested, and then look at you, etc.)For the signs I chose, if they weren't in the book, sometimes I would just look them up online, and/or after baby gets the idea, they often make up their own signs of things they like.Even after your toddler is talking, signs help support their communication because sometimes it is hard to understand a toddler's speech!

This book is great.I bought the book when I was pregnant and immediately started using the signs when my son was born.He started signing to me when he was 9 months old.He is now 2 years old and still signs when he says the word.It cut down on so much frustration that would have been had he not been able to communicate with me.

Get this!!!
I love this kit, it really has everything you need to get started signing, and it's really easy for caretakers to learn. You will not be disappointed!

Maybe my kit was missing something.
I liked what was in the kit but I had the strange sensation of having bought an advertisement for further purchases.It was by no means a complete kit but merely an expensive "get starter" box that was HUGE for the very tiny amount contained in side.

Great authors; Kit is not so great.
The good things about this product: 3 board books for babies with signs and the 2 DVDs teaching baby and parent signs
Things I did not like: The book that came with it was not the Baby Signs book I expected. DVD did not differentiate ASL and baby-friendly signs.
I would recommend to people buying this product to buy the book "Baby Signs: How to Talk with Your Baby Before Your Baby Can Talk"by the same authors, in addition to or instead of this product and get the free DVD.

Not all ASL signing
I'm actually having a difficult time knowing how to rate this.This product's success rate is really dependent upon your purposes.If your purpose is just to be able to communicate with your baby, it is a great product.I registered for this as a baby shower gift.We started signing with our daughter when she was 8 months old (she is now 13 months).She started picking up the signs very quickly.At her 1 year check-up, we were able to tell the doctor that she was signing about 2 dozen signs.She absolutely loves the 4 tiny board books that come with this starter kit.The starter kit comes with two DVDs: 1 is for parents and the other is for the baby; 4 board books; a flip magnet that contains all of the signs so you can easily reference it from your refrigerator; and a paperback book that explains the research and purpose behind teaching your baby to sign.The DVD for baby is called "Favorites."Everytime we put the baby DVD in, she was completely enthralled and watched it all the way through.The animation is great and it was fun for her to watch.The disappointing thing for me is that there are only 6 or 7 signs on the video.I got on their website to see if they sold any other DVDs and it seems that all of their DVDs are formatted in this way - about 6-7 signs.

The one thing that Baby Signs says is that most of the signs they teach are based on ASL, but some of them have been adapted to make it easier for the baby to sign.Some of the signs taught in Baby Signs ARE ASL.However, there are a lot that aren't, nor do they remotely resemble the ASL sign: bug, frog, and others.So, if your goal is teach your baby ASL, I would recommend the Signing Time DVD series.We ordered this instead of ordering another Baby Signs DVD.There are several series: Baby Signing Time, Series 1 Signing Time and Series 2.We ordered the 1st DVD in Series 1.The Signing Time DVDs have a lot more signs on one DVD.Series 1 and 2 are set up for 1-8 year olds, but I really think that they are for a child older than 1.I've not seen the Baby Signing Time, but we may be ordering that product next.She has learned a lot from the Series 1 and 2 DVDs that we have, but they are about 25-30 minutes in length and she gets tired of watching them after about 17-18 minutes.

I hope this helps in determining which series to go with in order to be able to better communicate with your baby.

My 2 1/2 year old loves the dvd in this kit... he also loves the books... I wish they were a little bigger (they're tiny) and that the dvd had more signs (it's pretty short) but like I said, my son loves the set!Some say that the signs aren't true signs, well, whatever they are, they've helped my son and I a great deal, so I don't care!Dominic is delayed in speech due to medical problems, but with this dvd he's learned to sign and sound out the words he signing, which is a big help when he wants something.The "baby signing time" dvd's are also pretty good, my son learned all of his fruit and veggie signs from them! This book is great for a child learning to sign.I would not recommend it for a child who is learning simple sign language to communicate until he or she can talk.

This book is awesome! My two year old is hearing impaired and I ordered most of the books in this series. I am impressed with the the way the author and illustrators have put this book together. It is the easiest book I have found to teach not only myself and my daughter sign, but also for my other school aged children to learn as well. This was a gift I received when my daughter was born and didn't think much about it. But as she became more interested in books this was wonderful and opened the word of baby signs and communicating to us.She enjoyed looking at the other babies in the pictures and imitating their signs.She got it!Even though she wasn't able to say the words, you saw that connection was being made between the object or action and communicating it to her parents.We proceeded to do so many more signs: milk, more, rain, etc.It was wonderful to be able to communicate with our daughter and I also think it helped alleviate/avoid the "terrible 2s" because she was able to convey her wants and needs.

My First Baby Signs
My grandchild loves this book.It is very simple and shows a picture and the sign for it. Very good book for a 1 to 3 year old.

Great book for learning first signs
We read this books from about 6 months, but it was not until now, at 12 months, that my daughter realy got into it.For example, this morning she brought me the book opend to the page for "baby" and did the sign.It was very cute!

I have always focused on teaching her animal signs because it seemed easier to me to associate signs with non-abstract things, and she was able to do the signs with her mouth (e.g. panting for dog) before she could do the ones with her hands.I can see why someone might be disappointed that the book doesn't show signs for things like "more" or "all gone,"but the authors state that in there experience these (dog, cat, hat, etc) are the signs that are likely to be a baby's first signs based on their experience -- and my experience with my daughter is the same.Now I'm shopping for another one of the authors' books so we can continue learning!

Great book
This book is pretty short which means we read it so many times over.
The photos of baby's doing the signs are more captivating than illustrations. It seems my now 14 mo old enjoys the real children and images of the signs rather than drawings.

He likes to sit and "read" this book practicing his signs by himself. It is also great that it is a board book because otherwise it would be shredded.

Takes away frustration!
My older children never really got the hang of signing, but my 14month old daughter is a pro.And it saves my sanity regularly!Just one sign, "More" is all we need to get along really.With older kids demanding my attention all at the same time, the last thing I need is her shrieking at me for whatever it is she wants.She walks to the fridge, and signs "More", gets what she wants and moves on.She signs "Milk" and moves on...awesome!We are reading books, she signs "more" and we keep reading (if time permits).What more could any parent want than to understand what their baby is thinking!Then, my daughter loves to flip through them and read all by herself.Talk about a budding relationship with reading!Very charming to watch.Love these books, all of them! ... Do not waste your money
A waste of money , only a few words and all are the most common and in use if a child signs at all.

not what I was hoping for
this book is good if you are trying implement a few basic signs into your child's communication.However, if you are teaching sign as a primary form of communication, this may not be the right book for you.There are 28 signs, most are for daily use and most I already use in my pre-k exceptional ed classroom.I am still on the search for the right book for my needs.

For starters
The children in my classroom are learning ASL from me. I have many books and books/cds or videos about it. This book is great because children can look at and get the infomation without the sign, it can be read and use as a normal picture book. There are pictures of each item and next to it the sign for it. So they can learn about it on there own without a teacher always having to say "this is the sign for dog". Also they are signs for every day things which I think helped bring interest to the students in my young preschool classroom. There are better books out there for teaching ASL but this book is a great one to have that can be use as a non ASL book and ASL alike. I liked it so much I have gotten it for family members to use with their children.

great simple book
My 2 1/2 year old son hasn't mastered the English language yet so we're teaching him sign language, which he has picked up on wonderfully. This book is great with wonderful pictures and how to diagrams. He loves this book and it's easy to understand.

Comprehensive dictionary
I bought this to help expand my conversations with my infant when I was teaching her baby sign language. The whole venture was a success. I combined baby signing dvd's designed for hearing children with this dictionary and we communicated exceptionally well before she learned to talk.It was worth the investment and now I am proficient enough to get along with a signing person.My baby was not hearing impaired, but sign language helped her learn the benefits of communicating and her speaking vocabulary is extensive at age 3.She speaks as well as an average 7 or 8 year old.

Very Outdated
I bought this dictionary recently as a reference for an ASL class I'm taking.Unfortunately, many signs are missing or have changed in the past decade or two since this was created.Technically, however, this is a fine resource.The illustrations are well done and cross referencing is simple.Just know that you'll want to seek out a newer and or more exhaustive edition.

Compact, tons of signs...
Good dictionary overall. If you are not familiar with ASL the signs may be a bit difficult to understand how to do. (Of course reading the explanatory notes will help out with that.) The first two signs I needed were napkin & grapes & neither are in there but other than it, it's a good book for learning sign.

Though this book is lacking in some signs, for the most part, it has every sign I could use.My daughter has a speech disorder, and I love that this book is so easy to use.The pictures explain what the sign is and how to use it.I'd definitely recommend this book to others.

Great tool for the hearing world.
There are so many people among us that are either hard of hearing or deaf, that its almost a shame that the hearing world doesn't and can't communicate with them. If the hearing world finds out how easy it is to learn sign language, and how much the hearing world can profit from this skill, every hearing person would learn how to sign. There are so many tools available to make sign language easy and fun to learn, that any excuse not to learn is invalid. This is a great tool for parents to yell at their kids in church to be quiet and pay attention, and no-one can hear you. Or tell your loved one some sweet nothings accorss a room and no one can hear nor understand you, but him / her. This also boosts the self esteem of a deaf person, knowing that someone cares enough to communicate with them. How would a hearing person feel if he / she or God forbid one of their kids suddenly loses their hearing? As a parent of a deaf child, with no other family member with deafness, ever, it is very frustrating when no one in the world around you can communicate with your child. Sign language is a lot easier than learning Spanish, German or any other spoken language. This particular book is a fantastic tool for ANYONE to pick up sign language in a hurry. A wonderful book, thank you
I'm writing this review as a response to the previous one, who found it disappointing and difficult to follow.

As a healer with minimal understanding of the Kabbalah, I found the book to be both clear and inspirational. Thank you Dr Schusterman for sharing this work with us

A Uselss Disappointment
I purchased this tiresome text after reading the customer reviews.While touted as a healing modality, it really is a mishmash of philosophies with an emphasis on the Qabbalah and channelled mudras.The explanations are tiresome, repititous and monotonous. While there is a pronunciation chart for the hebrew words, it is inconveniently placed in the back, which requires either flipping back and forth or photocpying it.The method relies heavily on muscle testing, a concededly inaccurate method. The "healing" method is never particuarly explained.While the reader is advised to have the patient thinkof or visualizea troubling situation and then perform a "balancing", these instructions are woefully insufficient.No doubt these deficiencies are addressed in the author's seminars.

The mudras are beautifully illustrated but all in all this book was a phenomenal waste of time and money.

Excellent dictionary but limited in scope
This is a beautifully done dictionary with fantastic photographic images of the signs. Multiple photographs are used to illustrate the movement of each sign. I gave it four instead of five stars because (1) it does not have as many signs as other dictionaries and (2) the spiral binding doesn't allow the pages to turn easily.

If you are looking for crystal clear photographic demonstrations of each sign, this is the dictionary for you. I recommend it for those who are not taking a class because you can get more signs in an illustrated dictionary and would probably be more able to interpret the drawings or ask you teacher for help.

ASL dictionary
Very handy, bought 12 more recently for my friends who are learning ASL. Very happy with purchase, and delivery.

Purse-sized and ever so cool!
No dictionary is a substitute for a decent course in ASL.No print dictionary can teach you grammar or the actual movements and relationships of signs.

That said, this is a way-cool reference to have, if only because unlike many so-called "pocket" reference books, it actually does fit in a pocket - a feat I wouldn't have believed possible with the many bulky ASL dictionaries out there.

The trade-off, of course, is that this dictionary is not very comprehensive, and perhaps two times in ten I find it doesn't have the word I'm looking for.It really only contains the very most common words.It also doesn't take into account regional dialects, so it may have a sign but not the version you need locally.

However, for beginner signers, including those who wish to learn and teach sign with babies and young children (or in a classroom setting), this is an incredible quick and handy reference.

I especially like the fact that illustrations feature full torsos of the signers as well as facial expression.Those features are both limited by the tiny size of the book, but again, the dictionary should not be used to replace a proper introduction to ASL, preferably with a deaf instructor.This dictionary is invaluable to keep at home or in my purse as a reminder of signs I've already learned.

signing is great when you are two
i bought this for my grandson who is two he loves learning new words and every night he grabs his cards and we learn sign together. and through out the evening we play a game of signing. one starts it off and we sign to see if the other one still knows the words. he really enjoys the art of signing even though he has no idea that it is a special way of talking.

It's ok.
Wasn't what I had expected.It is good for teaching children.I am an adult and I didn't enjoy learning this way.

Very good
I use the flashcards with my baby who is 11 months old. We both like them: they are a good baby-book size with nice, simple, colorful pictures. The cards can be wiped off but are a bit thin for baby's hands - he likes to fold and bend them. On the back side one can see how the hand sign is done, which helps me, and my baby also likes to study this. What I don't like so much is how the cards are grouped by topics in each box and that one cannot tell when ordering online which exact words are inside. I found, for example, that in none of the three boxes I bought, there were verbs such as "eat" or "drink" which are words usually taught early to hearing babies. There is only a small number of flash cards in each box that we actually use. I would have prefered to buy one box with cards geared towards hearing babies that includes the most commonly used signs, instead of purchasing three boxes and only use 5 words from each one. For me it was worth spending the money, though, because those few cards we use every day and enjoy it. ... Read more

Signs, Signs, Everywhere a Sign
I had the most amazing breakthrough while reading Denise Linn's book The Secret Language of Signs. I didn't realize how much and how often Spirit was trying to communicate with me before I started reading this book. Now I watch for signs in my body, my surroundings, music, conversations, nature, and other people.In fact, there is hardly a time when the Universe is not speaking!

I got a message in a dream and when I looked up the key words from the dream in the Sign Dictionary contained in Ms. Linn's book, the dream made perfect sense to me. I knew exactly what the symbols and words meant and it gave me peace to know that something from my past was coming up for healing. After dealing with it, the pain in my body ceased! My body had been trying to give me a message for about six weeks, but I just didn't get it. I didn't even know my body could speak to me about emotional issues.

Here's another example: I was reminded of the same name six times in a 24-hour period. Once, I saw it printed on a napkin; then, I heard it on the radio. Next, I saw a popular person by that name in a photograph hanging on the wall in a restaurant where I was eating; I saw it again on a billboard, then in an email, and finally on a note someone scribbled on a scrap piece of paper that was on my desk! That very same day, I found out that a person I knew by that name is expecting a baby!Plus, when I looked up the name in the Sign Dictionary, I found an even deeper meaning for me personally. I get it now.

How helpful are signs? I heard a radio announcer talking about an auction of rock `n' roll memorabilia. One contract signed by a popular band in the 1960s went for over $100,000! At the time, I was having difficulty with someone, whom I felt was trying to take advantage of me.I remembered that I had signed a contract with the person, so I pulled out the contract and reminded the client of the terms we had agreed upon. My problem was resolved!

There are signs all around us. Now, I know what to watch for and how to listen for them, I'm going to be looking for signs from now on. Thank you, Denise, for sharing.

Great reference
I am a beginner and this book works like a dictionary. I selected this book because with each word there was a picture and a descriptionof proper hand movement. I purchased this book as well as a few other books, and have been successful in learning ASL.

I would recommend the seller, as the transaction was prompt and I got what I expected.

Deceiving Cover
I bought the book off the shelf in a book store based on the cover.The cover shows photos of hand signs leading people to believe that is how all the signs are presented.They are not! The book on the shelf was sealed in plastic, so it wasn't until I got it home that I discovered the all signs are presented in cartoon form. The material itself is easy to understand and use. But if you're buying this book based on the presumption it uses photos to present the signs then this is not the book you want. ... Read more
