5-0 out of 5 stars BOOK OF SHARKS STILL A CLASSIC 30 YEARS LATER
I was so excited when i found this book on Amazon that i rush ordered it right away! You see, this book has been a personal favorite of mine for 25 years. As a boy growing up i would borrow this book from the library over and over. Since then, my interest and knowledge in sharks has grown but this is one of the books that started it all. A great book for experts, amateurs or the merely curious, The Book Of Sharks is a great addition to anyone's library who has an interest in sharks. Packed with lots of information, photos & Richard Ellis's beautiful illustrations, this book is a classic that stands the test of time!

5-0 out of 5 stars It's not just an endtable book...
This book can serve as a great endtable book with itslarge-page (12.5" x 9") format and accurate paintings of avariety of sharks by R. Ellis, but this book is more than that.

The book has excellent illustrations, paintings, and photographs, and biographies of several prominent shark researchers, conservationists, and shark-hunters.But more importantly, this book does a good job of summarizing aspects of the biology, ecology, and evolution of this amazing and intruiging group of animals.

Is this "the" definitive shark book?I would say that's a safe statement for the non-technical crowd. The only thing it needs to keep the technical crowd happy is a comprehensive list of references to scientific literature that was used to provide the information detailed in the book.

If you are interested in marine life, and in the lives and times of this group of top predators, then this book is for you.

Top marks, even though some of the information is becoming somewhat dated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Detailed Shark Book Ever Written
Mr Ellis has written the most informative, detailed book on every species of shark there is. Anything you want to know about sharks is in this book.I have read many shark books and myself and my husband are shark lovers andwe believe this book is superb.Definitely recommendable.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book of Sharks
When i was a kid growing up, sharks were (and still are) the greatest thing on earth. This book was the first book i ever read about sharks, although back then all i did was look at the pictures. I own the bookstill, and now that i am older, i know that is is one of the most thorough, and thought prevoking books dealing with this subject. It is a worthy entryin any shark lovers collection

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive text with accurate, beautiful illustrations
Richard Ellis portrays sharks in their many-varied splendor - from the peaceful, inoffensive species to the predatory varieties. His paintings compliment the text and photos perfectly, and convey the beauty and wonderof these extraordinary creatures. ... Read more

Product Description
Jim Toomey is "a breath of fresh water." --Washington Post

Lauded for sparking dialogue on topics relating to marine life, Sherman's Lagoon appears in 250 newspapers in 30 countries in 6 languages.

Collecting more than 42 weeks of Jim Toomey's Sherman's Lagoon, this collection transports readers to an imaginary lagoon near the South Pacific island of Kapupu, where a cast of coral reef critters live a charmed aquatic lifestyle.

Commenting on such timely issues as rising sea levels, degrading water quality, and environmental pollution, inhabitants of Toomey's nautical neighborhood include Sherman, an always-hungry, but otherwise typical kind of great white shark, and his witty pearl-wearing wife Megan, along with friendly Fillmore the turtle, geeky fish Ernest, macho hermit crab Hawthorne, and salty old Captain Quigley, who remains vengeful after loosing his leg to Sherman.

This is the 13th Sherman's Lagoon cartoon collection, in addition to two treasuries. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Comic Strip Being Published Today
Jim Toomey is still a genius. He is the last great comic strip artist that we have today. Truly an original concept of seeing a shark and his underwater friends get into the zany situations with the kind of sarcastic, snappy humor that we don't get to see anymore. It's always a blast to see Hawthorn's latest business scheme or Sherman's next crazy adventure. This book is a must read to anyone looking for a good laugh.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious
Sherman's Lagoon is one of my favorite strips and this book continues the fun.Even if you read the strip everyday you will enjoy this book by one of the funniest artist/authors around.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the funniest comics ever drawn
The 13th Sherman's Lagoon collection by Jim Toomey, SHARKS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN is an outstanding winner, joining others in the syndicated strip's growing library and providing especially winning and valuable to any area devoid of regular Sherman comics. A year in the life of a great white shark and his lagoon friends receives black and white and a few color embellishments in one of the funniest comics ever drawn: a top pick for any collection serious about representing syndicated comics and top-notch productions.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great book
Tomas Torres is a Mexican teenager who is forced to make the decision of whether or not to stay in school or go on to be a fisherman like his father and grandfather before him. Tomas wants to keep his fathers business alive, while his teacher is pushing him to stay in school and study marine biology. Opinions are split, things go wrong, read the book and find out what happens. A Shark Beneath The Reef is a wonderful book about a boy who is faced with the decision of school or fishing. His father was killed by a shark, and he has always wanted to continue his legacy. Tomas gains many different opinions on the topic before he decides. The marine police around his town are trying to shut down his fathers fishing business, and Tomas is caught up in the business of trying to save it, all while trying to make his decision. This was a very well written, well-researched book. The author uses great nature descriptions in the book, which really add to the book in many ways. I would recommend this to anyone looking for simply a good book.

The first thing I liked about this book is the different settings and how well they are described. For example heres how the author chose to describe a morning on the beach: "The mountains stretched north and south from horizon to horizon , and in the low light they looked like a gargantuan cutout of a jaw of sharks teeth. Above them stars shone as bright as fire. The sun would not be up for another hour." Its sentences like these that bring life to this book.

Another thing I liked about this book is the use of Mexican culture throughout the book. At the begging of the book it talks about the Mexican God Quetzalcoatl and the lady of Guadalupe. There is also a scene later in the book that describes a Mexican fiesta in which there is parades and dancing. This is a very neat and educational aspect to this book.

The final thing that I liked about the book is that while it is a very detailed book, the plot is very simple and it is an easy to read book. The plot of this book doesn't shift around too much, its beasically all about Tomas and his decision. The author provides characters and detail to add volume and description to the story, but the plot is simple throughout.

Overall, A Shark Beneath The Reef is a wonderful book with many delighting aspects that should be read and enjoyed by people of all ages.

1-0 out of 5 stars one of the worst books ever written
This is by far one of THE worst books I have ever read IN MY LIFE. The lead character, Tomas, is played out as a normal Mexican child, yet the author makes it sound like he is an adult. It is set in Baja, Mexico, i'm sure this place is rural and doesnt have a lot of people, but I'm sure they have better things to do then stalk sharks and pretend there are boats on top of mountains. About 85% of this book is about Tomas talking about fishing. Okay, if you are contemplating being a fisherman, GET this book, I'm sure it can help you. For the rest of you, if you buy this book you are just wasting your money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Shark Beneath th Reef

5-0 out of 5 stars Shark Beneath the Reef
Shark Beneath the Reef is an excellent book about a Mexican boy who lives near the Sea of Cortez. His family catches and sells sharks for a living. He heard about an enormous shark who lives under the coral shelf. He dreams of catching the shark and holding it above his head in the plaza as a hero. He is also making his mind on whether he is going to school or becoming a shark fisherman. Meanwhile, his family is suffering because the sharks have gone out of the area and they have very little to sell. The government officials also wants to begin taxing the fishermen because they are making the beach a tourist site. The family camp is on that beach, so they try to avoid the the officials as much as they can. I liked this book was because of the plot. It was action sometimes and drama at another. The positions of the plot sections were completely mixed up, but exactly in order. The moral was also astounding. I am still amazed at how the story ended out. I thought it would be a simple decision, but it turned out to be completely different. Absoluteley excellent literature. You have got to read it!

4-0 out of 5 stars One of George's best
From Jean Craighead George, best-loved author of more than eighty nature books for young readers, comes another marvelous story about a complex culture, family importance, and the vast relationship between humans and the natural world. This is one of her best, along the same line as the provocative WATER SKY--the story of a young man who learns about the whales of Arctic Alaska--and THE TALKING EARTH, about a girl who rows through the Everglades, befriending animals along the way. Although Ms. George is best-known for her classics, MY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN and the Newbery Medal-winning JULIE OF THE WOLVES, her other novels are great adventures, too. SHARK BENEATH THE REEF is the story of Tomas Torres, who, at fourteen, is learning about his changing home and trying to cope with the new decisions he must face, the most important being his choice to become a fisherman or a marine biologist. A great shark only complicates this decision, as Tomas's dream is to kill the shark and carry it into his small Mexican town above his head, with the bells of the mission tower ringing in praise. However, it is when Tomas comes face-to-face with the shark that he realizes how vital it is to his family's well-being, and he forgets his dream and thinks, more sensibly, like a man. The ending is one of the best parts about the story, when Tomas and his teacher discuss the varying faces of nature and how it cannot be controlled, although humans may think they'd like to and can. The entire story sparkles with details about the teeming life of the seaside environment, interesting, well-described characters, and the importance of legends and heroes to many cultures. Nature and animal lovers will enjoy reading about the different creatures and birds found in this part of the world, although not much is given to the shark to allay fears about its legendary ferocity. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty informative, too much so in some places....
This book does a good job in explaining shark life to children. It is interesting to learn that they also have teeth all over their bodies.Golly!Did you know that the great white has 50, 2.5" teeth in its mouth? They show them to you too in this book.I have to argue with the age on this book - it says 4-8.However, I don't recomend it to you children at all.It goes into great detail on the reproduction side of the shark, WAY too much so to be reading it to a four-year-old or even an 8-year-old.I didn't find it necessary at all to be included in this book for this age group. Maybe about 6th grade or so, but not at this age group. Why we have to trash the innocence of our children these days is beyond me.Plus, Simon uses some pretty large words that you have to stop and explain prior to going on in order to understand what is being said.It is intersting to read, but please keep in mind that there are about 3 pages you'll have to skip if you prefer not to teach young children about reproduction.Recommend with the above reservations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sharks by Seymour Simon- 4 stars
The book 'Sharks' by Seymour Simon was an informative and entertaining read. Many shark books have a tendency to retell commonly known information. This book offered many tid bits of infomation that kept my interest such as the gestation of most shark eggs being six to fifteen months. One line in the back of the book was questionable. It says, "The jaws of a great white shark are filled with fifty two-and-one-half-inch pointed teeth- the largest teeth of any shark." I was confused about what it was referring... the amount of teeth or the size of the teeth. I have to believe that it was the amount of teeth, as a fifty two-and-one-half-inch tooth is one gigantic tooth! Overall~ good book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Two boys' review: Little boys love sharks...and shark guts...ewww
As you know from my other reviews, I'm the chief rib tickler and bedtime book reader for two boys, a 5-year old and a 4-year old.

Boys like books with scary things that aren't *too* scary.

Boys like gross things, like a shark's liver (page 10), a shark's ear (page 17), and a shark's lower intestines (page 27).

This is a great learning book. Yes, it is gross, but the pictures are nothing more graphic than what you'd find in natural science magazines.

5-0 out of 5 stars Take the title literally
This book focuses on the anatomy of sharks, the inside and the outside, hence the title. The book does not go into detail about the various kinds of sharks or where in the world they live, but we have a brief glimpse at the various kinds of sharks and we get a gist for the variety: from the gentle and slow-moving whale shark to the predator great white shark to the very strange, camouflage-capable wobblegong. Clear explanations of the anatomy of the sharks are given, fully understandable to my 6 year old. An example of what is thoroughly explained is how they get oxygen from the water, how the gills operate, and how the plankton eaters filter the plankton from the ocean. There are also interesting comparisons between fish and sharks, highlighting how they are different from one another.

The text is detailed and the writing style not dumbed-down or patronizing, which I appreciate. There are many full color photographs, some of which are downright gruesome! The cross-section of the heart and the cut-open stomach showing partially chewed-up contents was a bit much.

This was a great part of our homeschooling unit on sharks. It is very thorough regarding the anatomy of sharks. To get a broader overview of sharks, additional reading is required. ... Read more

This raw, brawling novel, first published in 1957, is a fiercely realistic account of naval combat during World War II--in particular, the hell that was Nazi submarine warfare. "A German counterpart to The Caine Mutiny" (Frederic Morton), SHARKS AND LITTLE FISH is based on the author's own experiences as a young submariner. "It is as uncompromising, vivid, and unfalsified an account of war-time naval life as has appeared." (Times Literary Supplement)

5-0 out of 5 stars Riveting account.......
This is a really well written book. I couldnt put it down. Although only the last third of the book deals with his service on submarines, it was a real page turner. This is a must read for anyone interested in WWII.

5-0 out of 5 stars Engrossing war novel of the first calibre
If you're interested in a good World War II-era story from the perspective of the German sailor, then this is the book for you. It won't disappoint. Except when you've come to the end and realize that there's no more...

5-0 out of 5 stars sharks and little fish
One of the most entertaining books I have ever read,it displays a sense of humor and brutal realism seldom seen in today's historical novels. The characters are believable, and their simple honesty is refreshing in contrast to todays perfect characters that are a dime a dozen and very forgettable. Pick this one up if you are sick of the predictable and tiresome novels in which todays authors are mass producing with mind numbing regularity obviously using the same formula whichenables them to mass produce the same stories under different titles.

4-0 out of 5 stars Graphic and compelling account of German Navy WWII
Wonderfully and skillfully written account of a German sailor in WWII thatalso weaves parallels with Greek mythology to American classics. Sometimeslighhearted, sometimes bewildering imagery, but always an adventure thattakes the hero to hell and back - several times. When one wonders ifTeidemann ever makes it back, one realizes that the entire book is writtenin the first person and this somehow adds to the value of the story. Awonderful examination of the very worst in human nature and nature itself. You will never see seagulls quite the same after this. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Dusted, But Still Great
I read the German edition of 2004. Having bought it in 2006 I thought it to be a new book. It didn't mention anywhere that it is much older. Actually reading this coffee table book recently, I found out from the context that it must have been written in 1986 or 1987. This German edition also printed the name of the publishing house in a way and instead of the author(s)'s name, so that even German amazon mistook "Karl Müller" for the author. In fact, most of the real authors aren't mentioned anywhere, just the editor. Ok, but that may be of less interest to non-German bilinguists, as much as the many typos of the respective edition. It remains inconclusive, wether the peculiar geography (Tsingtao in China supposedly being located in the eastern Pacific) is the result of a faulty or uncorrected translation...

No question, this is a great book. You learn anything from bulimia to womb cannibalism in sharks. However, more than two decades old, it isn't really up to date. The criticism about protective shark nets at beaches is still a bit tame. There's a double page about shark fin soup without the dire consequences in the ecology of the overfished oceans, not to mention the endangerment of shark species because of that. The nuclear test induced hyper aggressiveness of one formerly not particularly hostile shark species in the Pacific wasn't probably known back then. If I recall correctly, there's also no explicit mention of the sensory organ in the shark's palate, which is responsible for many shark bites, which are intended as something like: "Hello, who or what are you?"

Even though the book goes at great length to convince the reader that the bad reputation of sharks far exceeds their real life danger. Curiously, the largest section in this book - 66 of 240 pages, i.e. far more than one fourth - is devoted entirely to shark attacks, arranged according to geography. I find that a little bit a case of defeating the cause. As I did know about the worse reputation issue before, I am not entirely sure, wether the book really succeeded in taking away further or re-adding some shark phobia in me...

The bottom line is: Despite some criticism, get this book in addition to a more recent one, if the recent ones aren't as elaborate and/or as well-pictured as this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST OF ITS KIND!
This is the most informative, detailed shark book that I have had the pleasure of reading and believe me I have read a lot of them. The book covers many different aspects of the shark, including its evolution, ecology, various species, shark attacks and the behaviour of the shark.Italso distinguishes between what is myth and what is reality behind thesharks history.Overall this is a very interesting and educational readwhich should be a necessity to any shark enthusiasts.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great introductory book to those interested in sharks.
An excellent book written by some of the leaders in thier fields of expertise. The text is easily understood by those outside of scientific research and is complemented with numerous pictures and diagrams. ... Read more
