1-0 out of 5 stars Shark in the Park
Do not purchase from this seller. They claimed book was mailed and it was never received.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
My wife teaches the 3 to 5 year old children at a Montessori school. They love the book. We purchased it for our 4 year old grandchild who likes to read it or have it read to her over and over again. She uses a used paper towel roll as her telescope and looks to the left, etc. just like the boy in the book. The book was sent quickly and arrived in perfect condition. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Little ones think this is hilarious
We stumbled across Shark in the Park at the library and had to buy it because my kids love it so much they would look for it at the library and get upset that it was always checked out. They are 4 & 5 years old and think it is just hilarious that the pictures looks like a shark is coming up in the next page, only to find out when you turn the page that the "shark fin" is really part of another picture that has nothing to do with a shark.Like the other reviewer, they love shouting out various parts to the story and even though they can't read yet, know the idea so well that they kind of paraphrase "read" it out loud to each other.

5-0 out of 5 stars love this book
My daughter (2 1/2yrs) loves this book.We read it over and over.I wish there was a board book version because my daughter likes to turn the page by using the peep holes in the pages and they get ripped. It is a good book to interact with your child, we have created games (tickle shark) and she likes to yell "THERES A SHARK IN THE PARK". As another reviewer, we also found this book at the Library - but my daughter didn't want to return it so we bought one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastically Fun!
From the colorful front cover to the delightful ending, this is a wonderfully repetitive book that finishes with a delicious surprise. I've read this book innumerable times to patrons and guests of the Children's Museum of Denver and to Head Start classes throughout the Mile High City and it has never failed to charm my audiences. The book is artfully designed with full-color illustrations throughout and ingenious cut-out overlays that enhance the story. I enjoy any book that can be acted as much as read, and this book lends itself to over-the-top gestures. The clever refrain also encourages listeners to join in the narration and will leave them smiling at the end. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Pics Difficult Reading
Another tremendous Eyewitness Book.Pictures are outstanding.Written portions are difficult for young children to enjoy.I end up restating virtually every line.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mysterious icons of our oceans that can only inspire fascination, through knowledge of information!
When ever I look for a particular fascinating book that has knowledge in detailed theory and facts I always go straight to the DK eyewitness series these books are full of bright colors that show you what otherscan tell you about the subject matter. They are beautifully designed books, and are,an insipiration to delve deep into the subject matter of interest.Shark is just one of these books it provides in depth and comprehensive information about the different types of shark species, their anatomy, habitat, diet and their endangerment to our humane society! The coverage spans right, across through the whole shark spectrum from Great Whites to Horn sharks.Packed full of detailed photography and explanation captions that not only teach you a great deal of reference, in detail.Sharks have been with us for millions of years they are an icon of our oceans we need to learn more about them to respect them and do our best to make absolutely certain that they will survive for many, more millions of years to come. Any DK eyewitness book is a must read for it,s comprehensive in-depth information, but shark would, definitely be a horrible, crime to miss simply because in the end it,s teaching us to leave it alone as fish in the ocean and respect it for being the top apex predator of the food chain.

4-0 out of 5 stars Publisher reviewed it's own book four times!
I have not yet read this book, but just find it kind of strange that the books publisher gave it a total of four 5-star reviews (to pad the review statistics most likely).Hmmm!?!As an avid shark enthusiast, I'll wait until there are enough 5-star reviews from those other than the ones who stand to profit directly from the sale of this book before I decide to add it to my collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating examination of the shark for young readers
Eyewitness Books has an imposing series of volumes that provide accessible introductions to a wide range of subjects for the young reader. This one focuses on sharks. Like almost all works in this series, the book begins by defining the subject matter. In short, sharks belong to one class of fish, differing from many others, which have skeletons made of "gristlelike cartilage." Sharks are predators (as most of us know), but they differ greatly.About half the species are less than about 3 1/4 feet in length.I found it interesting that relatives of sharks include manta rays, skates, and sawfish.

Sharks swim differently from their more bony relatives with their style of swimming, graceful but with different mechanics from most fish. Subjects considered in this work include the senses of this group of fish. Of course, they have the senses that humans have--sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. Especially interesting, though, is that a handful of other species, they can detect weak electrical signals generated by prey. Another section explores the interactions between sharks and other species, from remoras (who eat shellfish that can cause health problems for sharks) to pilot fish and various parasites.

The very final passage looks at "Save the shark." Some shark species are endangered by encroachments on their environment.

Another very successful volume in the Eyewitness Books series.Highly recommended for young readers (8-12 years old).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent kids book on sharks
The graphics and images are compelling, and it's loaded with facts.I used this book to enhance a science exhibit for K-8, and all ages learned interesting things from it.For younger or less confident readers, each 2-page spread has a different topic, so it is easy to read a bit and then put it down until the next time.I thought it would be watered down for the older children, but was pleasantly surprised that it had plenty of depth for the older ones. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Quite good
This is a book that is good on so many levels --

+ goal setting
+ team work
+ tallying
+ subtraction

There is merit in the story itself -- a group works together to meet a goal. And there is real math value -- the double-digit subtraction is clear to understand and presented in several formats -- verbal (as you say the subtraction aloud), visual (as you see the subtraction problem solved) and as part of the text.

This book is a keeper.

3-0 out of 5 stars A story of subtraction
The Sharks of Ocean City are trying to go to the state swim camp. Their coach tells them the city newspaper will sponsor the team if they can swim 75 laps in one day before the end of the week. The humorous story's plot hangs on subtracting double digits. The cutesy illustrations of fish in swimwear may be amusing to younger children, they did not appeal to me. This is another book in the MathStart series. It has suggested activities and names of some other skill-related books at the end. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars There's no other Book on Sharks Like This One
I've never seen any book close to this one on sharks. It is a really good field guide. It lists probably all the sharks in the world-even very ancient looking ones! It even shows what kind of tooth comes from each shark which I think is great for shark tooth collectors like my son. That way you know which shark had which tooth. That's cool. There are no real photographs of the sharks listed though. Only Illustrations or paintings of each in a plate section at the start of the book. Then the rest of the book has each shark shown in a line drawing with many details describing each one. There is a drawing for each shark and most of them include the drawings of the teeth that go with each shark. Before the picture section or plate section in the very beginning the book describes the whole anatomy-everything you'd need or want to know about sharks. They also show diagrams or illustrations on the insides of sharks. It is a cooooooooooooool book. I'd highly recommend it to all shark lovers or anyone who just wants to know about them and one who goes shark watching-since it only a field guide. Actually, my 14 year old son is a shark lover and wants to know more about them. I got this book for him and he loves it. I'm a marine life artist so this book works great for me too. Now I can paint each and every shark there is in the ocean, while I learn about them at the same time. Also I can try to put some science about sharks into my paintings!

5-0 out of 5 stars the incredible diversity of sharks
A lovely book. I got interested in sharks after watching some nature programs of the deep sea. I wanted to know what other weird, bizarre, beautiful and little known shark species there are and this book introduces them all with very good drawings and color plates. Each shark species, even those that have been seen only a single time, is represented by a color painting and then again in the text by a line drawing. In addition, there is a very nice introductory section on general shark anatomy and biology, also with some superb b&w drawings. The text is sparse, but will tell you basic information (if known) about each species. BTW, the book's cover looked different than the one shown on this page, but that doesn't matter to me.

There are no photos, as one reviewer pointed out, but then, these field-guide style books usually don't have those anyways. Most folks will never get to the deep sea, so it's not like you'd need a book like this to take along on your next beach vacation so you can key out whatever washes up on the beach. Then again, if you're a diver or snorkler, it will help key out the occasional shark or dogfish you see. What this book is best for is to simply open your mind about the incredible diversity and beauty of sharks. Who woulda thunk there were THAT many of them! So sit down and marvel :)

3-0 out of 5 stars Lacks photographs
I am a shark expert and I have reviewed over 80 shark books.

Although this describes every shark known to science, it would have been enhanced had it contained pictures of the aforementioned sharks instead drawings that lack the realism of photos.

I have also written a book about shark attacks.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE Field Guide to own
If you're going to have only one book on sharks this one is it. It's not just exhaustive but it is exhaustively illustrated as well. Each shark is shown in black and white line drawing as well as color illustrated.

This is also a well-made book. It's a paperback but the binding is sewn rather than glued. It's made to last.

5-0 out of 5 stars this is the one!!
my husband is extremely well read and has a special interest in sharks.he has looked for a long time for a book on sharks that would show detailed plates and drawings for identification as well as informative text - not fluff.this is it - at least it's the best we've found.i highly recommend this book - for the money, i guarantee you'll be satisfied with the amount of information it provides. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Adrift in the Red Sea...
Belgian artist Herge wrote many adventures for his cartoon hero Tintin, a young journalist, of which "The Red Sea Sharks" may be one of the most thrilling. This story, originally published in 1958, includes Tintin's faithful dog Snowy, his seafaring friend Captain Haddock, and a variety of recurring characters from earlier adventures.

As the story opens, Captain Haddock and Tintin have a chance encounter with General Alcazar, once dictator of San Theodoros. The General leaves behind his wallet; in attempting to return it, Tintin becomes aware of a gun-running operation. At the same time, Captain Haddock's Marlinspike Mansion becomes a place of refuge for Abdullah, the impish son of Emir Ezab, deposed by a coup in the Arabian Emirate of Khemed. The threats of two mysteries seem to come together in Khemed, so Tintin and the Captain hit the road.

"The Red Sea Sharks" features one thrilling sequence after another, as Tintin and Captain Haddock face an aircraft fire, pursuit by rebel forces across the desert, and an aborted escape by dhow across the Red Sea.Along the way, the two will fall afoul of perpetual series villain Rastapopoulos. In a thrilling climax, Tintin and Captain Haddock end up in charge of an unarmed freighter filled with human cargo, facing a rogue submarine out to sink them all.

"The Red Sea Sharks" features Herge's simple but powerful artwork and a well-constructed storyline that seems remarkably fresh despite a considerable passage of time. This adventure is very highly recommended to Tintin fans of all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Last book needed for a Tin Tin collection!
My two grandson's, ages 7 & 9, simply adore Tin Tin.It's rewarding to know that they have books they can read over and over and never tire of them. This was the last book they needed to finish their collection, and they were extremely pleased that "Santa" brought it this year.

5-0 out of 5 stars Freeing slaves and fighting shady arms dealers
Tintin is one of the most famous comic book characters in the world. Unfortunately he is not as well known in the U.S. Hopefully I can help change that. The Tintin albums were created by the Belgian comics writer and artist Georges Prosper Remi under the pen name Hergé. His first Tintin album "Tintin in the Land of the Soviets" appeared in the pages of Le Petit Vingtième on January 10, 1929 and his last completed album was "Tintin and the Picaros" in 1975/1976. The Tintin albums are primarily for children but they are written so that adults also greatly enjoy them.

Tintin is a Belgian investigative journalist who gets drawn into all kinds of dangerous and eventful adventures around the world. Already in the very first album "Tintin in the Soviets" he is aided by his talking dog, a fox terrier called Snowy. In Swedish and in French Snowy is called Milou. In "The Crab with the Golden Claws" he meets the grumpy but hilarious Captain Haddock. A lot of the best comic situations arise from Captain Haddock's bad temper in combination with his bad luck and above all his creative use of words. As a sailor Captain Haddock is expected to swear a lot but all swear words have been replaced by expressions like "billions of blue blistering barnacles", "you Mameluke", "Macrocepahlic Baboon", "odd-toed ungulate", "and troglodyte "," Pithecantrophus", but never real swear words. Another source of many comic situations is the genial but hearing-impaired Professor Cuthbert Calculus (Kalkyl in Swedish, Tournesol in French). Other prominent supporting characters are the incompetent twin detectives Thomson and Thompson (Dupond and Dupont), and the constantly joking and laughing but irritating insurance salesman Jolyon Wagg.

In this album from 1958 Tintin and Captain Haddock unexpectedly meets an old friend of Tintin, the former dictator from South America, General Alcazar. It turns out that General Alcazar is trying to purchase weapons from a shady arms dealer who is also illegally selling arms to two fighting parties in the Middle East. The son of the emir Ben Khalish Ezab (one of the fighting parties) the rambunctious Abdullah is staying with Captain Haddock (and Tintin) and is playing all kinds of tricks on everyone. To get away from this Arab Dennis the Menace and all his pranks they go see the emir himself and end up getting deeply involved in an incredible adventure. They also stumble upon an organization that is selling African slaves (slavery still existed in the Middle East and Africa in 1958). A lot of old crooks and friends from other books show up here, including Captain Allan, Rastapopolous, and the lovely but highly irritating Prima Donna and opera singer Bianca Castafiore.

This album is fast paced, action packed and very exciting and quiet interesting. It is difficult to put the book down even for an adult. The humor is superb and there are laugh out loud moments on almost every page.

It is my experience that American kids will love the Tintin albums once they have been acquainted with them (an album is a hardback comic book with the pictures in series). My kids love them and their friends love them as well. As a child, I read all of the Tintin books in Swedish, and as an adult living in the U.S., I am reading them again to my children, but this time in English. This book is intensely exciting and full of action and therefore it is one of my favorites, and one of my children's favorite. I highly recommend this Tintin album to young and old.

4-0 out of 5 stars The race issue comes to light once more.
Herge, The Red Sea Sharks (Methuen, 1958)

The Red Sea Sharks began the last stretch of Tintin adventures, an increase in quality that quickly became a new plateau that lasted until Herge's death. This is, perhaps not coincidentally, also the first of the entries in the series to become really self-referential-- instead of introducing new characters, Herge preferred to keep his universe almost hermetically sealed. (New characters do pop up from time to time, of course, but the major characters, and almost all of the minor characters, were now firmly in place.) Herge turns his attention from the continuing unrest between Syldavia and Borduria to Tintin's world's other major zone of unrest, Khemed, where the upstart Bab El Ehr has finally overthrown Tintin's old ally Mohammed ben Kalish Ezab. Tintin and Haddock have recently run into their old pal General Alcazar, as well, and are trying to return his wallet to him; meanwhile, Mohammed, fearing for the life of his incorrigible son Abdullah, has sent him to Marlinspike. This, combined with the revelation that Alcazar seems to have had something to do with the coup, send Tintin and Haddock off to Khemed to see what's going on for themselves. They find a lot more than they bargained for...

While Herge redrew a number of the older strips to revise out things that he considered on the mark in the charges of racism often levelled against the strip, the treatment of Africans here rings exceptionally odd-- they are portrayed in almost exactly the same fashion they are in Tintin au Congo here-- dumber than the whites (and Arabs) in the strip, if fundamentally good and kind-hearted folk. I'd be lying if I said I didn't have some serious questions after rereading this (especially in light of Tintin au Congo, which I read in the same week for the first time) about Herge's defense that in the early days, he was swayed by the prejudices of the bourgeois who surrounded him. It's quite obvious in the same scenes that Herge is virulently anti-slavery (and Haddock's attempt to keep shouting insults after slavers long after they're out of earshot is one of the book's most amusing scenes), but being anti-slavery does not necessarily also mean one doesn't still harbor prejudices.

Still, from the point of view of the plot, characters, and pacing, Herge had never before been on a solid a footing as he was in The Red Sea Sharks. *** ½

4-0 out of 5 stars Red Sea
"The Red Sea Sharks" was first done by Herge in 1958, and is the nineteenth Tintin comic, set around Jordan and the Red Sea. There's a few old characters, and a few old gags too. "Land of Black Gold", is a little better, I think. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
My 2 year old loves this book. We got it for him when he was 18 months old, and he is still obsessed with it. Our bookshelf is loaded down with books, but this is the one he grabs for all the time. There's just something about Smiley Shark that he loves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I think I like this more than my child does!
I absolutely love this book.It has become my favorite to read to my sea-life obsessed [...] out of the many books we have. The story is adorable, the illustrations are wonderful and overall it is definitely 5 stars in our book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for calming fears
I bought this book for my 4 year old son. He used to loves sharks, but a few months ago developed a strong fear of them. For a month straight, he was afraid to go to bed because he said he got "bad nightmares" about sharks. He would toss and turn and cry out in his sleep, so I know that he wasn't just trying to stay up later. As soon as I read the description for Smiley Shark, I thought it sounded perfect.

I am happy to report that he loves the book and was willing to believe that the shark was just smiling and not scary. The illustrations are bright and cheerful; he loves the expressions on the various sea creature's faces.

4-0 out of 5 stars "It Was An Unforgettable Moment in My Life..."
As a child, Eugenie Clark was fascinated by fish at the aquarium, spending every Saturday there while her mother worked. These afternoons led directly to her future career as one of the leading experts in her field, as well as the title "Shark Lady."

This children's biography by Ann McGovern covers Clark's childhood, her trials and tribulations as a student, and then the many adventures that she embarked on during her adult career, including her first time walking on the bottom of the sea in a diving helmet, meeting the king of a small island in the Pacific, founding a research centre in Florida, and presenting a trained shark as a gift to the Crown Prince of Japan.

Likewise, the book recounts the various methods of research performed by Clark and her team, including the mystery of the "sleeping sharks" and the discovery of poisonous secretion of the fish known as the Moses sole.

Told in straightforward prose, the book captures the excitement and wonder of ichthyology and marine biology, making the subjects accessible for young readers; particularly those that may already have an interest in these fields. The portrayal of Clark herself is full of spark and life: precocious as a child, and full of enthusiasm as an adult, the narrative is strewn with her own words, quoted from various National Geographic articles. Ruth Chew provides simple but evocative pencil illustrations.

Ultimately, whether one is interested in sharks or not, this is a short but inspiring story that tells of a dream fulfilled and a life well-lived.

5-0 out of 5 stars 4th Grade! Mrs. Kirby!
Unforgettable. I'd recommend it for children and adults alike. Reading of this woman's adventures had a great impact on how I look at the world. From the story of her childhood to some of her most exciting adventures with the sharks, the book is as masterfully written as any I've known. I can't believe this stuff actually happened.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book inspired my lifelong fascination with sharks.
I am an educator at the Oregon Coast Aquarium. I teach about sharks and the marine environment because I think education is the best conservation tactic we have. My lifelong fascination with sharks and the ocean all beganwith this book. Eugenie Clark was an inspiration. This book did a marvelousjob of conveying Dr. Clark's enthusiam and awe for not just sharks but forscience. This book changed my life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Shark Book
This is an excellent reference book on sharks.Good story-telling and I definitely recommend it for any shark-lover!

5-0 out of 5 stars Moves both the unbiased and the ones with opinions.
This book, I was happy to find, was more than a simple biography of Peter Benchly and his adventures and actually gave a few facts laced into moving firsthand experiances. One portion of the book contains a story that accurately depicts the position of sharks as the key to ocean food chains.

4-0 out of 5 stars Shark Trouble, without the pictures
If you're a Peter Benchley fan, and haven't read Shark Trouble, then it's for you.Very interesting and informative information and stories. The references are also a good to read. However, it is essentially Shark Trouble without the pictures, and with one extra story.

4-0 out of 5 stars peters autobiography
anyone who gives this book a rating of less than three stars is off their rocker. this book is fastpaced and exciting.@it tells of the author of jaws and his incredible experience with ocean wildlife. who doesnt want to read about shark attacks and riding giant rays.

1-0 out of 5 stars Blah blah blah
You know those books that done on and on and on after having a beginning that showed some potential, but not much? This is a classic example of that. I read a review that called this book riveting, so I was tricked into going out and buying it. The review was right . It was riveting if you consider riveting to be that you need rivets to hold you down to keep you from getting up and never picking up this atrocious display of a book ever again. After the first chapter, I took a nap. Midway through the second chapter, if my eyeballs could throw up, I knew they would have after reading a mockery of all books ever written. Howeve it got past the publisher, I'll never know. This book doesn't deserve one star, it deserves negative 57. Ultimately, this bad excuse for a piece of literature is good for anyone who is looking for a book to make fun of. My summary of the book is, "Don't bother reading this book. IT SUCKS" ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
I love this book, on one level because of the lovely, evocative writing about Fuchsia's journey through China and Chinese food, on another because I am Chinese and felt she really captured the "Chineseness" of food and life.Just wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lovely, lovely book!
Okay ... after reading Land of Plenty: A Treasury of Authentic Sichuan Cooking and Revolutionary Chinese Cookbook: Recipes from Hunan Province by Fuschia Dunlop (and reviewing them at Amazon), I decided that I was going to marry here without further delay.... Sadly, my wife stepped in and said I wasn't allowed to. To assuage my disappointment, I had to console myself with merely reading her latest work ...

Well, it is excellent.... that's about all I can say.

In truth the book won't appeal to an audience much beyond fairly hard-core 'foodies' but that seems to be an increasing segment of the population these days so I hope Ms Dunlop reaps the financial benefits she deserves from this book. She, herself, only describes this book as a memoir of 'eating in China' but it is a lot more than that... It is a thoroughly informative and entertaining look at one chef's experiences interspersed with some insightful observations about the food culture in the east and west, and the interplay between them....

A great read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Native Chinese says YES!
I came across this book in my local library and was immediately impressed by Dunlop's beautiful and accurate description of the "Thousand Year Eggs". It is indeed a very difficult flavor to write about. As a native Cantonese and an enthusiastic cook, I probably will never be interested in a Chinese recipe book written by an English woman but this book is no recipe book. Dunlop takes us through a journey of cutural discovery, as well as her self discovery. She blends culture critique and food appreciation together so seamlessly. I especially appreicate her observations that even I never noticed. She is bold, both in terms of her taste and her writing. There is no need to discuss "authenticity", because she already mentioned that every place has its OWN authentic cooking. She immersed herself in a very different country and witnessed the drastic changes of China in the past 20 years. Thanks Fuchsia, I will introduce your book to my Chinese blog readers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Such a pleasure to share: I've ordered seconds and thirds
Since reading Fuchsia's articles in the Financial Times over the years, I've been fascinated by her nonchalance about her achievements: speaking fluent Mandarin, Han and Szechuan is a huge testament to her intellect and sensitivity to aural nuance. Of course that it's mixed with oral nuance, makes this journey explaining the totally foreign 'icky' bits of Chinese cuisine -- attempting to get to the bottom of why they eat what they eat and where the pleasure is derived -- entrancing and well-balanced.

I liked reading about her life-on-the-road trials, resulting in the sharp edges of panic being eroded, and techniques for immersion and decompression from one intensely insular culture to another, and the real battles with her journey-mates about honourable behaviour in various contexts. As she was often suspected of being a 'spy' on her quests to experience originality, I would liken this book's more-ish-ness to a good spy novel, a palatable page turner, easy on the digestion, and driven by an awareness of inscrutable workings elsewhere. As I said, I've bought this book for dear friends as gifts. Very highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of color, little conflict
I was so excited to read this book, especially after reading such wonderful reviews. But I have to admit that it dragged in many parts and I kept waiting for something exciting to happen. While I thought the chapters on Hong Kong and Hunan were strong, the author didn't show us much about her personal life in China. She was there, after all, before the internet came onto the scene, and it would have been interesting to hear how she dealt with her personal struggles when she was so far from home. It also seemed like she adapted to Chinese life better than any foreigner I've known (except for some revelations in the Hong Kong and Hunan chapters), but then suddenly at the end of the book, she feels so burned out by China that she ponders leaving that life behind forever. I'm thinking, when did that happen? It reminds me of when everyone was reading "Memoirs of a Geisha" and highly recommended it to me. While it was very descriptive and colorful, as is Shark's Fin, I kept waiting for something to happen. I would like for her to write a book about her struggles and relationships there. She mentioned once that the mainland Chinese think all western women are loose, but we never hear about her personal experiences with this cultural difference. If she ever decides to write about her struggles with China, I would read that book. ... Read more

I got this book for my son when he was four and he loved it. He loves it still at the age of six. This book gave him a great understanding of how everything works together inside the body. He knows more about sharks than any adult I know because of this book. Would recommend!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love these for learning and fun
I have purchased several of this series and they are fun and educational. My son loves them and shows them to his friends.

I havne't personally seen this book since I had it shipped to my granddaughter who is 7 years old.She LOVES it, she has especially enjoyed the different layers of the body that the book shows, she is learning from the book.Parent's were happy with the quality of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascination galore!!
My son received this book as a gift and it has provided many hours of study and fascination with sharks. He took it to share one day in his kindergarten class and it was a hit!!All the parents wanted to know where I got it so they could buy similar items for their kids.I refered them to amazon or ebay. The body pieces are fragile though. We've lost the muscles and his skeleton is loose, but it's only because it's been used to death. We can still read about the sharks. You could glue the pieces back in.Either way, it's a great book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great model!
Although it says that this book is appropriate for kids aged 9-12, our five year old loves it! Each page shows a layer of the sharks body and explains how it works. There is also information about other sharks in general. The 3-D model captures our son's imagination. He particularly thinks it's funny that the shark has tires in its tummy. We highly recommend any of the books in this series. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly Written, Redundant, and Full of Contradictions
The only thing worse than a boring book is a boring book that is poorly written. The writing lacks any sort of style and is extremely flat... I have read math text books that were more stimulating.

Furthermore, Rosenhaus constantly contradicts himself, a tendency which grows more and more frustrating and discredits many of his points.. example: "I have no friends in the business. It is nothing personal - just business"... at another point..."It was neat hving your top recruit also as you best friend." "I hoped [my recruit] would treat me like the friend he was"

He refers to women as "skirts" and sings his praises like a child.

TERRIBLE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow: I have much greater respect for Drew Rosenhaus now
Say what you want about Drew Rosenhaus, but his story about he became the NFL's most elite agent is nothing less than inspiring. He outworked and outhustled the rest of the agents out there, and that is the main reason the agents all despise him.

Sure he's contrived, arrogant, and greedy: but that's EXACTLY the characteristics I would want in my agent. The stories he shares from his college days to the present day of representing NFL superstars are both entertaining and hilarious. Not many personal stories inspire me, but this is the exception.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful and surprising
Now, I'd never heard of Rosenhaus until this summer because of the T.O. situation. I picked up this book expecting it to be a typical self-absorbed, egotistical piece of junk. However, I had no idea about the depth of Drew. He came to terms with his sexuality early in his life and he didn't let small minds stop him from becoming successful -- including his own. Did you know he auditioned for Cirque de Soleil? His talent was throwing enormous styrofoam triangles into the air and then catching them behind his back. He didn't make the cut, but he vowed that he would drink a gallon of Dr Pepper everyday from that day forward. That may sound incongrous, but I think it shows the level of commitment he's willing to make. So, Mr. Rosenhaus please take a bow, this is a book that may seem overpriced at 10 cents, but feels really right to me.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Worst Sports Has To Offer
The name of this book should be re-titled 'A Shark Never Sleeps: Wheeling and Dealing with the NFL's Most CLASSLESS Agent.' This guy is so disgusting I won't bother to give my litany of negative aspects of this book. The only interesting part of this book is that it exposes the ugly side of professional sports.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wow!He's Some Kinda Symptom . . . Er, Guy!
October 6, 2002

Hoping for a peek into the arena of sports agency, I
picked this up one lazy afternoon.Wow!I suppose if
you're the right sort of person with the right sense of
humor, you could have a lot of fun wallowing inside this
fellow Drew Rosenhaus's own fascinated vision of himself
and his life--replete with numerous descriptions of how
crafty and tough he is, as well as an insert bikini photo
of his model girlfriend (with whom he's formed a deep,
lasting pair-bond, I'm sure).

However, it's more likely you might be left gaping at a
printed ego that approaches the sociopathic, pondering
about what publisher and editor were possibly thinking,
and wondering how many Drew Rosenhauses are out
there, tolerated, even rewarded, in this, the tackiest,
but best dressed, of all possible worlds.

Tolerated and rewarded not just in professional sports,
which would be bad enough, but in civil law, corporate
finance, government . . . ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME BOOK!!!!
MY SON AND I LOVE THIS BOOK AND ALL THE MAGIC TREE HOUSE BOOKS ~ A MUST BUY FOR KIDS!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Leave out the evolution
I love this book except the one thing that made me hate it.And, that was the evolution.Non-fiction books like to present evolution as fact instead of theory. The truth is that no one really knows what happened 50 million years ago.To suggest that dolphins were once land creatures that walked upright and had hands and legs is a bit too much for me.The book makes it seem like anyone who is anyone knows that it is truth.Really??I don't know that. You don't know that. It would have been a great book if they had offered any other opinion than that one.Of course, that would not be politically correct.I won't be ordering this book for our school system, and I will review all other Magic Tree House non-fiction research guides as well.It is a shame because we were going to purchase them all.

And, scientists give me a hard time for believing in a man who died and rose again for the forgiveness of my sins.Please.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great White Sharks
This book was recommended or referenced in just about every book I've read on sharks, so I had to get it.Excellent all around -- informative, educational and great pictures.A must-have book for any shark lover. You will NOT be disappointed!

4-0 out of 5 stars Detailed study of a complex creature.
Stereotypically, the Shark is portrayed as the very epitome of evil in a manner never applied to terrestrial hunter-killers. None of the big cats or even-bigger bears (and the Polar Bear will actively hunt man!) are as feared as the Shark and none more so than the Great White. Part of the myth may be attributed to their being underwater and, therefore, largely unseen. Nevertheless, people do not go in search of Lions and Bears with raw meat and blood smeared over their clothes in order to attract them to the camera. So why people should react with horror and revulsion when the marine environment's apex predator responds - just as any other hungry creature would respond!, to such freely distributed blood and guts is beyond my understanding.

This book is just about as complete a study of a single species of fish as one might hope to find. Comparisons with other Sharks are included but only serve to complete the work. Before considering the content, however, I do have two criticisms. Richard Ellis is clearly a talented artist but the head-to-body dimensions of his painting of a Great White which appears on the cover are at odds with the dimensions shown in the many of the photographs used throughout the book. Not quite the equivalent of a ponies head on the body of a Shire horse but close.

My other criticism is that Ron and Valerie Taylor are mentioned on 22 pages of this book which would have been much improved had they been absent altogether. In one photograph, Valerie Taylor seeks to portray herself as the female equivalent of medallion man by leaning forward to show maximum cleavage and deliberately reveal the fact that she wears the tooth of a Great White around her neck. Wow! How hard is that! Her questionable antics of attracting sharks to her arm - over which is fitted a chain mail suit covered in bits of fish, blood and gore has done more to demonise the Shark than anything else apart from, perhaps, the film Jaws. As I have commented before, pity she never graduated to using a tin hat! For me, these antics place a large question mark over the Taylor's overall objectivity and one gets the feeling they would do just about anything to promote themselves and the Shark is simply a means to this end.

But, don't let this "below par" contribution spoil an otherwise good product. Simply ignore those pages on which the Taylors arementioned and move on. It does not detract from an overall appreciation of the product.

The historic detail was particularly refreshing with material I had not previously seen. The section on close relatives and a comparison with the Megalodon were first rate and very instructive. The biology and morphology of the creature also combine to provide the reader with equal measures of educational and technical detail whilst retaining the book's overall readable quality. Shark attacks then takes up a whole 50 pages and, although those well-known and over-used, photos of Henri Bource and Rodney Fox make an obligatory reappearance, the remainder is both fascinating and informative. There then follows items about fishing, the Great White in captivity and comment about the film Jaws.

In a contradictory ending, we find the heading "Can we save the Great White Shark?" On that subject, I would have expected to find a Taylor-free zone but instead, this well-past-their-sell-by-date, shark-fighting, less-than-dynamic, diving duo from down under are there with the female half looking like Barbie Doll at eighty. A photograph on page 246 shows a young boy wearing a T-shirt. The caption reads "Andrew Guest wearing a "Save the Shark" t-shirt; a gift from Valerie Taylor." Bit late don't you think?

Overall, I was tempted to remove a second star for contradiction, but the fact remains this is a pretty good offering. All the technical, background information is here and for that I am grateful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A acrobatically, detailed spectacle guide to these formidable powerful, predators that swimmers or divers, should, respect most!
This is a detailed enriching spectacle guide to these sleek chubby acrobatic, predators of the diverese open water.Whose life span is very long extensively long as the bigger brothers of the blue shark in the foodchain, they are easily able to camouflage themselves with their, gray and white markings, on the top side and underside of their body in the sea.If you were to name one species of shark, the odds are it would be the great white. This is the shark that we all know and is the one that,we fear most. The great white is a formidable predator in it,s powerful acrobatic, feats which is to be respected not feared. All big carnivorous hunters have especially powerful jaws some even like the white pointer have detachable powerful jaws that are perfectly useful inattacking large prey the great white is no exception scientists have estimated that a great white can exert a bite pressure of 140kg per sq.cm! The lion is the king of the land the great white is the king of the ocean for, keeping populations in check of other organisms or lifeforms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Advice for Aspiring Attorneys of All Types
"Swimming Lessons" is a great guide for new and aspiring lawyers. In it, Cleveland lays out the realities of professional practice in a clear and candid manner. The book is mainly geared towards those who are interested in "Big Law" -style private practice, and provides many key insights for how to thrive in that setting. This leads to much discussion of the Big Law business model, firm structure, and how a new lawyer can succeed in this highly specialized environment.Hence, there are useful tips such as the importance of always billing one's time (it is better to seem inefficient rather than lazy), and how to be strategic in the selection of non-billable work.
While the focus is on Big Law, much of Cleveland's advice also translates well into other types of practice settings - such as non-profits and government. For example, his advice on building successful relationships with more senior attorneys applies to almost any type of practice (your superiors are more likely to invest valuable resources in you if you can show that you'll make their lives easier).Likewise, his thoughts on utilizing support staff, improving the quality of one's work, and successful organization transfer equally well. Some of the details may differ in implementation, but the core principles are valid in almost any professional setting. As such, "Swimming Lessons" is an excellent resource for anyone pursuing a legal career.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wise, witty guide for new lawyers and the people who love them
Long recognized as one of the finest attorneys in the Pacific Northwest, Grover Cleveland now shares his wisdom and wit on how to succeed in the law in Swimming Lessons for Baby Sharks, the essential guide for new lawyers and the people who love them.Mr. Cleveland leads his reader through a series of lessons that address the everyday problems facing the young lawyer. Designed primarily for attorneys entering the competitive underworld of corporate law, Swimming's lessons work equally well for a much broader range of readers: attorneys pursuing government, nonprofit or public interest work, those studying, aspiring to, or merely considering the law, and folks who want to get ahead in business, gain a better understanding of the legal profession, or just enjoy a good read. Not afraid to provoke or unsettle, Cleveland, who turned to county government after a decade in corporate law, lays it on the line in this unflinching look at a challenging and controversial profession. What's more, his advice is sound and often insightful. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Newbies
Excellent guide for a new "shark tooth" hunter.I spent many a day looking for shark's teeth in the Calvert Cliffs portion of Maryland.I came away with hundreds of teeth and no way to identify them. This book will not only help you to identify the teeth, it will also give you the time period and history of that shark.A very comprehensive guide to anyone that loves sharks and wants to identify their finds.

1-0 out of 5 stars Needs Color And More Information
With the pages in black and white it's very difficult to determine what tooth you actually have. There are no pictures of what the sharks look like or where the teeth are typically found. I was very unhappy with this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overall- a little vague in areas
I know it's hard to specifically ID some teeth - and this book is a great start - and it's a great overall resource. But there are few photos - and the language can be a little more scientific than I was looking for.

Good overall listing of most of the teeth you will ever encounter. I was collecting in Venice, FL for a while and this book helped me ID or at least classify many of the teeth I found.

It could use some further specifics and I was able to find a small almost pamphlet - type book locally that was a little better with photos and easier to understand explanations.

I recommend it for the new shark tooth fossil-hunter.

4-0 out of 5 stars An ok overall summary of shark tooth varieties
I have collected fossil shark teeth for 30 years and have purchased many different books. This is a nice basic summary of the various types of teeth that you are likely to encounter. For any extensive identification or details I usually look at palentology data at universities. So I would recommend this as a base, knowing that for details you will always have to dig out more details from professional references.

4-0 out of 5 stars a good book
a good book,
very useful for shark teeth identification, unfortunately there is not much more information but general information and classification is easy to carry out with this book in your hand. ... Read more
